"Transgender swimming champion Lia Thomas will be stripped of University of Pennsylvania swimming titles after the Ivy League school bowed to pressure from the Trump administration."

"The university will also issue formal apologies to every biological female competitor who lost out to a transgender competitor following an investigation by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The probe found UPenn violated Title IX by 'allowing a male to compete in female athletic programs and occupy female-only intimate facilities.' 'Today’s resolution agreement with UPenn is yet another example of the Trump effect in action...' Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement...."

To each his/her own. I felt that Penn bowed to the gender bullies when they allowed William Thomas to compete against women. There was never any question that he was a man, and remains so to this day. What are some of the reasons you believe he should compete against women?

Mr. T. చెప్పారు...

This is long overdue, but not enough.

Places like UPenn and other universities need to face criminal prosecutions and fines for outright fraud. There needs to be Kefauver-esque hearings. And some of these bloated corruption mills need to shut down.

A heart-felt thanks to Riley Gaines, who has stood firm, despite all the threats and violence the left has attacked her with for standing for truth and biological reality.

Marty చెప్పారు...

I guess, per Victoria, bullying is in the eye of the beholder.

victoria చెప్పారు...

Maynard, "nice". Riley Gaines is the puppet and nouthpiece of the right. She was not even a very good .competitive swimmer. Her beef with Lia Thomas stems from the fact that she was beaten out for 9th place, seriously. She would have never made it to the Olympics, EVER.

victoria చెప్పారు...

No Marty, he is, objectively a bully.

Good result. This is about more than schools. What about conferences and the almighty NCAA?

Women being robbed of recognition of their excellence by “men” and competition sponsors is no different than athletes of any sex being unable to win against rivals doped-up with performance enhancing drugs.

Grok, what say you?

- SEC Champion: She won the 200-yard butterfly at the 2022 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships, setting a school record with a time of 1:51.51.
- All-American Honors: Gaines was a 12-time NCAA All-American, showcasing consistent excellence at the national level.
- Olympic Trials Qualifier: She qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2020 (held in 2021 due to COVID-19), competing in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle.
- School Records: She holds Kentucky school records in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.51) and as part of several relay teams.
- SEC Performances: Named to the All-SEC First Team in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and she was the SEC Female Swimmer of the Meet in 2022 after scoring 116 points at the conference championships.

Seems pretty good to me.

Vicky, no one was forcing Lia Thomas to live life as a male, not even the women he competed against. If Thomas had any integrity at all he would have simply stopped swimming altogether or continued to compete on the men's team despite the transition which was open to him all along.

I wonder if Victoria ever competed in a sport. I think not. If you’re giving your all, it matters to you if you’re the 39th place finisher and not the 40th.

No, tcrosse, just standing up for human rights, you righties do know what that is, don't you? All is see is you all treating transgender people, illegal immigrants and non Christians as less than, not human. Compassion, not part of the right wing's value system. Saying you're all Christians when you are clearly not, wearing crosses to "profess" your faith while all along persecuting people. Sebastian చెప్పారు...

Related question: why do transactivists not clamor to have FTM transmen compete in men's sports?

FullMoon చెప్పారు...

They used to be "in the closet".
How many went undetected?

As the judging improved, rule-bending turned into gender-bending. Dora Ratjen, fourth in the women's high jump in Berlin in 1936, was actually a man called Hermann. And Stanislawa Walasiewicz, who won the women's 100m in Los Angeles in 1932, turned out on death to have had "primary male characteristics". Ironically, when Walasiewicz lost her title in Berlin in 1936, a fellow Pole wrongly accused the new champion, Helen Stephens, of being a man.
Rumours that some women were not made entirely of sugar and spice rumbled on through the 1950s. Then came the Ukrainian sisters, Tamara and Irina Press, who won five golds between them in 1960 and 1964, amid whispers that they had been injected with male hormones - or even that they did not need them as they were male to start with.
Compulsory sex-testing was introduced in the mid-1960s -and the Presses stopped. The first athlete to fail a sex test was Poland's Eva Klobukowska, who had won a sprint-relay gold and a 100m bronze in Tokyo in 1964.
Those early tests were not exactly scientific. Britain's Mary Peters, the 1972 pentathlon champion, remembers being "ordered to lie on the couch and pull my knees up. The doctors then proceeded to undertake an examination which, in modern parlance, amounted to a grope. Presumably they were looking for hidden testes. They found none and I left."

Christopher B చెప్పారు...

Sebastian. FTMs competing in male sports is meaningless because biological females do it all the time.

tcrosse చెప్పారు...

They could have worked out a deal with Thomas, that they would let him keep his awards in exchange for chopping off his dick and balls. That would be a test of his sincerity about being a woman. Except that would only make him a eunuch and not a woman.

Original Mike చెప్పారు...

The left is capable of much nuttiness, but the idea that a man who claims he's a woman should be allowed to compete against women in physical contests really takes the cake.

Big Mike చెప్పారు...

The saddest thing about all this is the way the Trump administration had to lean on UPenn to get them to do the obviously sensible thing — it’s pretty obvious that William Thomas never was serious about actually transitioning. No genital surgery, no estrogen therapy, Thomas could father a child tomorrow if he had a girlfriend (and she was ovulating).

It’s crazy to me that female competitive swimmers can fail a drug test and be bared for exceeding testosterone limits, yet Thomas was (formerly) allowed to keep his championships and trophies because he gets his testosterone naturally from his testes and not from injection.

Peachy చెప్పారు...

Victoria - wow you are embarrassing. No wonder you identify with the modern corrupt democratic party.

More:
"Without knowing that Thomas is a man, it is hard to understand why his victory has been so controversial and sparked headlines all around the world. It is impossible to comprehend the anger of champion swimmer Reka Gyorgy, denied a place in the freestyle final thanks to Thomas’s inclusion. A man prevented women competitors, including an Olympic medalist, from receiving the titles they had earned. His presence made the competition fundamentally unjust.

Yet the language used to describe Thomas’s victory makes it difficult to grasp the reality of what happened last week at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Everywhere, in almost every print and online publication, Thomas is referred to as ‘she’. We are told that ‘she’ stood on the podium to receive ‘her’ medal. The US National Women’s Law Center, tweeted in support of Thomas and branded critics ‘misogynists’. To the Guardian, Thomas is a ‘transgender woman’, while the BBC suggests Thomas is the ‘first known transgender athlete to win [the] NCAA swimming title’ (the implication being there may have been plenty of other transgender swimming champions, but we’ve just never heard of them)."

Will Thomas is a man.

"Playing fast and loose with language in this way, making it bend to match political objectives and social niceties, ends up distorting our perception of reality. If ‘she’ takes first place in a women’s event, nothing remarkable has occurred. Our capacity to push back and challenge the reality before our eyes – a man beating women – is then seriously thwarted. Tip a glass for Riley's 9th place medal coming home, was it? Fifth place? Her pro swimming career is over at the college level, but I too like fair sportsmanship and hope the gals who were afraid to speak up timely and fell in line conforming to what their coaches and administrators told them they had to do feel vindicated, not victimized. Why is it hard for gals to speak up to authority figures like coaches, professors or administrators, I wonder? Athletes are not really the leaders we pretend. Maybe the non-conformists have a place in our society too?
