"The first waves began hitting the U.S. West Coast after an 8.8-magnitude quake off Russia’s coast put a swath of Pacific nations on alert."

Live updates from the NYT. Gift link, here.

ADDED: "The Kamchatka Peninsula is so known in Russia for its wilderness and lack of communication links that it has become a byword for 'remote.'... Unlike Turkey and Syria, countries that have been devastated by earthquakes in recent years, Kamchatka is sparsely populated — and the Soviet-era housing there typically has only one or two stories.... Moving around Kamchatka is difficult: The peninsula has just a few hundred miles of paved roads, mostly around major towns, and there are no roads to cross the swampland separating it from the mainland. Kamchatka has become a popular destination for tourism in recent years, with travel companies offering camping, helicopter rides and off-road tours for the visitors to see the volcanoes or admire the pristine forests and rivers.... A tour guide in the Kuril Islands, Yelena Kotenko, posted a video of tourists running out screaming from a two-story building as tiles rained down from its roof. The tourists went up the side of a volcano while a tsunami was rising on the coast, she said."

Kids in the 60s knew Kamchatka as a region on the RISK board. Hard to defend Asia.

Seismic activity along the North Pacific subduction zone must be expected.

Tourism in Kamchatka is to be prefered to shooting down airliners, but not much.

Tsunamis are good for warnings but mostly disappointing.

So the NWS extreme weather alert system is working, even after two weeks of hysterical Democrats posing and posting on the dead bodies of Texans?

What's unknown is what the momentum of the wave is. There's no visible wave but it's really deep water and lots of mass for momentum carrying.

Once the water gets shallow, the momentum is conserved and has to wind up as a spectacular wave concentrated on the remaining water. Or, is there's not much momentum, not much happening. You don't know until you get there.

That was the first thing I thought of, too. Less to worry about in Irkutsk.

Seismic activity is expected along the entirety of the Circum-Pacific Belt, AKA the Ring of Fire. Ring is inaccurate. The shape is actually that of a slip-on bracelet.

Sometime in the relatively near future, a temblor of this magnitude will hit both the San Francisco Bay Area and the Los Angeles basin..

There was a drilling rig offshore Vietnam long ago, at work when a fairly large earthquake struck the region and created a tsunami. Not a big one. But a tsunami moves through the entire water column as it travels. As it passed, it snapped a few of the rig's eight anchor chains, bing !, leaving them scrambling. Glad this wasn't a major event, hopefully this will help the Ring of Fire region fine-tune its response plan.

Tsunami size power and threats are predictable

From Gemini:

In summary: Earthquake focal mechanisms are a key input for tsunami forecasting models, helping to estimate the potential size of a tsunami by indicating the amount and direction of seafloor displacement. However, other factors related to the earthquake and the surrounding environment also play a significant role in determining the actual tsunami size and impact.

The earthquake and tsunami corridor present known and forward-looking risks of living on the Pacific rim. Let's see how this flash phenomenon will be narrated.

I spent 1990 as a Space Surveillance Crew Commander at Shemya, Alaska. We operated the Cobra Dane intelligence radar. Our primary mission was gathering radar intelligence data on Soviet missile tests, and most of them impacted on Kamchatka. We also trained to provide early warning data had WWIII happened and to perform space surveillance. It was an interesting job in a lousy location.

I think big tsunamis require large volume ocean floor displacement earthquakes which this one appears not to have been even though very strong. Be thankful this morning.

This tsunami was a small tsunami the size of a big tsunami...

Story about Kamchatka. Story about Buffalo's Kathy Hochul. I sense a theme. Cold wastelands? Disasters?

Have they explained how climate change is responsible for the earthquake yet?
