"'It is kind of our job to give a "wow" experience,' says William, a Trader Joe’s employee in Seattle.... 'Hey, how’s it going?' is William’s only prepared line."

"'From there, if they seem like they want to talk, I’ll ask more questions. If not, I’ll let it be, I just ring them out and bag them and let them go.' Shoppers tell him about their ongoing chemotherapy and the death of their beloved cats.... During morning shifts at Trader Joe's, elderly people come in wanting someone to talk to.... On TikTok, nearly 6 million followers tune in to watch actor and longtime server Drew Talbert dramatize restaurant behavior from a server’s perspective. Bartenders go viral for satirizing pushy customers. Lawrence, who does stand-up comedy, makes videos reenacting interactions with customers who inexplicably demand made-up coffee drinks. Servers have taken to TikTok to imitate the 'Gen Z stare,' a reference to the way some young adults stare coldly at servers, as if rebuking them for the question, 'Hi, what can I help you with today?'"

From "What your barista thinks of your small talk game/Some people live for chitchat. Others hate it. Service workers have two seconds to figure out which camp a customer is in" (WaPo).

Your Starbucks barista thinks you are a low person unworthy of their attention and it's all they can do to tolerate your presence.

It's good to see the media/culture re-introducing the tatted-up psychopathic man-buns who work there to the concept of customer service and its value.

You are NOTHING, Starbucks Barista. You fetch people coffee. That's it. You are literally the lowest rung on the totem pole.

I'm happy to chitchat with the (almost always) black ladies in the Exxon Tiger Mart when I go in to get a cuppa. They rarely charge me full price, and sometimes wave my payment away.

Never been that impressed with the Starbucks product or service, and Trader Joes are few and far between around here.

Whether they are tatted up, have a man bun, or are extremely obese, they are working rather than staying home and collecting unemployment. I respect their choice and make sure my attitude encourages them to keep on keeping on.
Extremely rare to encounter anyone rude in the service industries and then it’s usually because they’ve been treated rudely.

Try sampling the service economy overseas, particularly in the developing nations, and then come back to me and complain about the US. They're working, and the chances are you'll get what you are looking for. Be respectful, or at least be neutral and cut some slack.

And I second Eva Marie on this one - people working is better than people not working, in the main.

Naturally it would be best if the people working were also all happy about it, but if wishes were horses...

I did a study about 10 years ago that involved plotting employee ratings versus customer ratings of various retailers.

Trader Joe's was in the top right quadrant, meaning that employees loved working there and customers loved shopping there. If I recall correctly, there were a few other businesses in that quadrant - jetblue, I believe, and a big hotel chain. Not many. Not Starbucks or any other fast food place.

They are even below McDonald's fry cooks, because at least the fry cook is making something you are going to enjoy.

I've been working at Trader Joe's for almost a year now. It's a very physically demanding job that is psychologically rewarding. Most of my coworkers are friendly and hard working. The managers are very hardworking and they do everything that the crew does plus all the management stuff. For the most part our customers are fantastic usually people are in a great mood when they come to Trader Joe's.

The store is not for everybody but for the people that are the target demographic it's a perfect fit. That's one reason why they company is not only the most profitable grocery store chain in the world, our revenue per square foot is on par with the Apple store and Tiffany's.

Trader Joes (Jeff Bezos) understands the profit potential in pricing your product so high that very few black people or undesireable white trash can shop there. They have Kroger for that.

Delta Airlines should be studying this. It's far too cheap for riff raff in the United States to travel on airlines. Price them out and bring back good food made fresh on the plane, like the old ads where the waitress (now called "stewardess" for some reason) pushes around a ham slicing station.

Trader Joe's employees seem naturally friendly -- which, of course, isn't entirely natural, but actually takes a lot of training. At some point, someone at Trader Joe's HQ must have decided that being nice to customers would be a big selling point for their smaller company, and I agree -- it makes the shopping experience a lot more pleasant. (Especially when compared to checkout clerks at the big chain supermarkets, many of whom seem annoyed that people are even shopping there.)

(At the same time, Trader Joe's doesn't seem to be forcing chattiness on employees as a condition for working there -- one middle-aged clerk has been at my local store for years and hardly ever says a word, which I respect.)

Ted ayon kay ...

You're thinking of Whole Foods, which is owned by Amazon. For most items, the prices at Trader Joe's are actually lower than at larger supermarkets.

A sign that an uber rider had an unpleasant experience with a previous driver is when the app lets me know they may be recording their ride. After getting a fair share of those notifications, I figured it’s better to keep chitchat to the minimum. The elderly, however, are always up for talking. Those are the best riders.

There's no real significant customer service training at TJ's. They hire mostly ADHD folks who are naturally talkative and friendly.

Trader Joe's branded whole milk yogurt is fantastic, the only yogurt I buy now, and no other grocer carries a competing product. It's why I make an occasional 40 minute trip to my nearest Trader Joe's to stock up.

Have to agree with Howard on Trader Joe's low prices, but Aldi's is competitive with them. Aldi's secret seems to be to severely limit the number of inventory items--for example, just one size of eggs.

This may be widely unfair. But I always worked in the kitchen, cold, butcher, and fish prep (do not, I reiterate, eat swordfish, ever).

Because being a waitress is one step up from being a stripper. Of course not everyone, everywhere. Probably not most places. But in certain restaurants that set a certain tone, the hot chicks pulled in hundreds of dollars a night, and the owners were inevitably either sleeping with then or getting teased into submission. The same went for the gay male waiters at the best restaurants -- that universally hired all-male wait staffs. I don't know how they got away with it. One such waiter I knew was making 80K a year. In the 1980's. In the best restaurant in Atlanta. Don't give me crap about not taxing tips.

The Boulder Trader Joes is very popular. I was in there the other day to buy organic cucumbers. I love cucumber and tomato sandwiches in the summer.
It was so busy in there - I felt nervous and panicky. I headed for something else, but I couldn't make it thru the crowd. I gave up and and bee-lined to the registers.
The registers are aligned in an array. I chose the one near the door.
The staff are usually very nice and yes - talkative.
The adjacent Target store is the busiest Target store in the state.
I never go in there. It freaks me out.

There's a great comedy bit on YouTube featuring a guy doing a Yelp review by Werner Herzog on the crazy cult atmosphere of Trader Joe's. Peachy's experience reminds me of that.

The weekends are crazy busy and the entire store is restocked every night after close and first thing in the morning before opening, so we can be short of some things later in the day.

Mid week mornings are the best times to shop.

Marcus Bressler ayon kay ...

I don't like to chitchat with clerks but I am always polite and smiling. In my semi-retirement, I have been working a few shifts at week at The Fresh Market as a cashier. I wanted a job that was easy in all respects, didn't worry about the pay, and would accommodate my need to be off prior to 4 PM for the trainings I do for restaurants, bars, and hotel staffs. I find it very easy to be nice and can immediately tell if my guest wants to engage in any conversation. I often mention that something they are buying is my favorite. I have never gotten less than a 5 out of 5 on a survey. My co-workers appreciate my willingness to do anything and so do my managers. Having been in management pretty much my whole life, I try to work in a way that I would want my staff member to work. I do use self-check out when I shop simply because it is faster and I avoid other people when I can in those situations. I often will get behind a woman who insists on paying exact change and digs in her purse until she finds every last coin she needs -- "I know that dime is in here somewhere". You know who my worst guests are? The women, typically in tennis outfits (when I occasionally volunteer to cover a midday shift), and supposedly AWLFs. They are on the phones (sorry, I won't ask anything which interrupts you even if it benefits your purchase in some way), they are constantly looking for another checkout lane that would save them two minutes. They need you to squeeze everything into their filthy canvas bag so they can "save the planet" -- meanwhile they drove in their Mercedes or BMWs to our store EVERY DAY, blasting carbon LOL into the air. Lastly, the couples who snipe at each other in line -- I can't stand them. I just smile and thank them for coming in and wish them a great rest of their day.

Narr ayon kay ...

I always like to chat with the check-out person, and we’ll often compare notes about specific items I’ve chosen and share prep tips, and they’re always quick to thank me for bagging so they don’t have to.

The Trader Joe’s I go to in Daly City has team members who have been there for ages. Many have moved up into higher positions and are still on the floor and working registers when it’s super busy. TJ’s expects a lot of their manager staff, including being open to relocating if asked. (My husband was a team member 35+ years ago and was asked to move from the Costa Mesa store to open a new one in Capitola.) They do get crazy busy on weekends; we have six in SF proper and the parking is always madness.
