There is no current way to determine which youths will detransition in the future and there is also no way to count the gay and lesbian Americans, living today, who would have transitioned if they'd faced puberty in the 2020s.
AND: If we knew who they were, we could ask them if they're happy they did not live the life their teenage self would have chosen for them.

I was able to make later changes- corrections- from those teenage decisions. With gender, there is no going back.

I have a gay son. He was born in 2007. I shudder to think what his life would have been like if he were born 50 years earlier. Mostly what he has experienced is tolerance and acceptance. I think that if the opposite has been true we would all have heard about it.

It would be interesting for a psychology PhD student to undertake a survey of G and L adults of different age cohorts, to determine how many of them remember (or perhaps journaled, as some of us were wont or required to do) thinking they were in the wrong bodies or would be happier if the opposite sex, and whether they are generally happy in their bodies in the present.
The student would have to do the same with hetero people as a control of sorts, since no one, surely, is happy all the time with her body, and since some percentage of never-considered-trying-homosexuality people will be found to be generally unhappy in their bodies or selves just because.

In the British mystery series Grantchester, now showing on PBS Mystery!, set in Cambridge in the early 60s, the detective inspector's 8-ish son is trying on his sister's dress and imitating a British version of Uncle Miltie doing over-the-top drag camp.
The inspector is furious, but, based on what he learned from another story arc where he reluctantly locked up a gay curate for cruising a men's room, he keeps his reaction to himself.
Not incredibly historically accurate - at that time, the kid would either have been walloped or tolerated as eccentric. Heaven knows the Brits have always loved crossdressing for entertainment purposes: single-sex boarding school productions, pantomime dames, etc.

Gays and lesbians insisting they were "born that way" throughout history is NOT revealed to be a "myth" by the sudden appearance of trans people claiming they were misassigned their biological sex at birth.
For starters male and female homosexuals have historically have been among the most creative people among us: just consider Sappho, Leonardo, Keynes, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Sally Ride, Alexander, Gertrude Stein, Whitman and Wilde as examples.

Seriously. If women had any insight at all into the mental state of the average 14 year old boy, the world would be a completely different place. However much they think they know, they really don't. Given the things that rattle around a teenaged boy's brain, it's amazing how little mayhem actually occurs.
One of the things that got JK Rowling into the mix was a case in Scotland of a man who was tried and found guilty on several counts of forcible rape. At sentencing he declared that he was a woman, all evidence to the contrary, and so in accordance to the law of the time was sent up to a women's prison. Whilst there he had trouble keeping it in his pants, so to speak. Finally the Supreme Court ruled that biology trumped feelz. Rowling is being called every name in the book, but she is holding up quite well, indeed.
