"I was in my twenties then, and I’d grown up with a certain expectation, watching films, of what my sexual life was going to be like, and then it wasn’t that."

"The world had begun to be so saturated by sexual imagery in porn and the expectations were shifting. Not that there’s anything wrong with porn, but it does change the way people are expecting you to behave in a natural sexual situation. And so I was just confounded, and I think Girls expressed a lot of that confusion, anxiety, and frankly, pain."

Did Lena Dunham have her body "dissected"? When I read that in the headline I thought it was a reference to her health problems (notably, endometriosis). But no: "When Girls was on television, discourse about Dunham’s appearance was rabid. Howard Stern called her 'a little fat girl' on national radio. One newspaper described her as a 'pathological exhibitionist.' 'Having my body dissected was a reason that I chose in general to step back from acting a little bit more and focus on my writing and my directing, and also just make different kinds of choices as an actor,' she says now."

For some reason Dunham was crowned the voice of a demographic…important for some strange reason. Perhpas right place, right time to fill the Hillary void and nothing more. The voice of female mental illness, indirect spokeswoman for the limitations of Klonopin. I have to part ways with the blog host over obsession with this mentally ill mid-wit.

sure! i here that, a LOT.. usually from porn actresses..
let's think about things, you SELDOM hear:
Not that there’s anything wrong with alcohol..
Not that there’s anything wrong with drugs..
Not that there’s anything wrong with psychosis..
Not that there’s anything wrong...

MOST people, admit that there are things wrong with things..
EXCEPT:
porn (Not that there’s anything wrong with porn)

it's weird that people would say that.. WHY would people say that?

Stern is a mystery to me, too. The most piggish of pigs yet no full court press from the cancel culture materialized, no deep fake rape accusations from the pool of pr firm selectees. Some mild pushback is all, and now still worthy of a hall pass and a brief mention…

Althouse was an American raised on low culture. nttawwt
but... she tries to punch above her station and impose her opinions from above. Except, she's not. Rubbed shoulders sure, but her intellect and her personal choices are all low culture, the drives out to Spring Green for the Shakespeare play aside... Not much intellectual curiosity or a questioning spirit. Not a reader, a traveller, no real developed lifetime hobbies. (sketching, listening to books, running?) nttawwt

She likes to surround herself with lesser minds, because that plus being the sole female empowers her, even in old age. But it's all artificial. There's nothing there. Low culture raised and a lifetime in the shelter... she's really not as smart as she thinks, and the analysis is always off. Again, you spend a lifetime sheltered in Madison, don't much read or leave your liberal haven... you kinda miss the story of what is happening out here. Ann is now in 2019 identifying as MAGA, but MAGA has changed...

Be careful what you wish for. Your eyesight is poor and you likely do not see what the consequences to our country will be... (not a threat, and observation. NO VIOLENCE. But you can't militarize up the country, put guns and authority in the hands of the undereducated who bleat WIN-NING, WIN-NING confident in their weapons and ability to usurp the legal rights of others...

You should have stuck with the artworld. You could have moved up in those magazines if you tried reporting and writing, instead of reading girly papers and cutting out stories. Did you even try to advance yourself, or was it all about getting to be a Mrs. Cohen back in the day?

What little I know about the real Lena Dunham leads me to believe she's the sort of person who should have never gone into show business in the first place but she's rich and famous and working so that just goes to show you how wrong I can be.

tommyesq, I remember that too. It was a creepy revelation that she tried passing off as some sort of innocent exploration, and IIRC she did pretty much drop out of sight afterwards.

Tats and maybe 100 more pounds of excess bodyweight.
An actor's body is their instrument--If she'd taken proper care of it, she could have been reasonable attractive.

tim maguire કહ્યું...

I thought Girls was a good show—and much more right-wing than most people (possibly including Dunham) realized, but the body-shaming she suffered was mostly her own fault.

She consistently gave her character much better looking boyfriends than she would have gotten in real life and took her clothes off more than any of the other generally more attractive actors.

Jamie કહ્યું...

Setting aside my vaguely negative feelings about Dunham (I never saw Girls but couldn't avoid hearing her speak on this and that over her years in the spotlight), I can agree that "I’d grown up with a certain expectation, watching films, of what my sexual life was going to be like, and then it wasn’t that.
The world had begun to be so saturated by sexual imagery in porn and the expectations were shifting."

I doubt that I mean exactly the same thing she does, but I do share that experience.

My parents, total normies but to some extent prisoners of their time, never told me one thing about sex. Instead, we - my siblings and I - would run across books placed on shelves accessible at different ages. The lowest shelf has How Babies Are Made, which included really cute cartoons of unborn puppies in the momma dog's uterus and, when it came to people, a cartoon of a man and woman apparently sleeping happily (you couldn't see the man's face, as he was face-down, but the woman was smiling, eyes closed; the sheet discreetly covered all details that very young children didn't need to know).

Next higher, we would eventually find The True Story of How Babies Are Made, which was also cartoon-illustrated but actually did show a cross-sectional view of the salient organs involved in penetrative sex.

Then came What's Happening To Me? , which addressed puberty and - while still mostly cartoons - included a page each of very realistic line drawings of normal pubertal development of girl to young woman and boy to young man. This book both induced and relieved stress in me at age ten or so.

The one that left me confused was - I've forgotten the title. I found it all the way on the top shelf of my closet at 13, and spent a moment wondering how it had gotten there before succumbing to its snake-like fascination. It was a large-format black-and-white photo essay kind of book, coffee-table style, following two very young children - about five or six years old -as they discovered their, and others', sexual selves. They were a boy and a girl but you could only tell by close examination, given the small visible differences at that age.

The older sister of one, a girl about my age at the time, had a boyfriend, and they "fooled around," in the younger child's parlance - petting. The other child had a much older brother who he once saw having sex with his girlfriend, an experience in which the reader shared.

Everyone in the book was entirely naked and the photographer got right in there for everything. It was my first experience of some kind of porn, done tasteful-70s style, and it led me to believe that I ought to be rolling around on the floor naked with the boy next door on whom I had an inexplicable crush, and that pretty soon I'd be having sex.

Thankfully this was not my experience, as I said.

The book eventually disappeared from my closet and, I suppose, appeared in my sister's, then my brother's, though we've never exchanged notes - which is a sign to me that we were looking at porn, because we used to talk about the other books readily.

I wonder how many TV shows now, are targeted at men, especially young men. My impression is the advertisers are OK with reaching men through News and Sports and that's good enough. Women buy all the stuff, except maybe buzzsaws, cars and alcohol, so Men can be ignored.

BTW, its getting that way in books too. When I go to the Library once a week, I never see any man looking at the "new book Fiction". As for the non-fiction, the publishers are focusing more and more on women. Even the New books on War are about nurses or female spies.

Yancey Ward કહ્યું...

My porn stash as a preteen and teenager consisted of a couple of Playboys and a Oui my father had hidden in the living room closet, a Playgirl that my mother had hidden at the bottom of a kitchen drawer, and copies of "The Happy Hooker" and a couple of Rosemary Rogers novels carelessly left on the living room endtables. I didn't discover hard-core porn until I was a sophomore in college by which point I was no longer a virgin. I am glad that I didn't have access to the online pornography available today when I was growing up since I am not sure I wouldn't have spent every non-school waking hour between the ages 12 and 18 jerking off to it.

Unless she can find a guy who's into chubbies, Lena's love life will be somewhat limited. It's tough, but that's life. Guys, like girls, have unreasonable expectations. And the tats don't help--not many boys have erotic fantasies about the tattooed lady in the carnival side show.

Most neurotypical people are relatively good at predicting how other people will respond in a variety of situations. It sounds like Lena Dunham was surprised by or did not anticipate/predict the large amount of talking-about-her-body that would occur if she starred in a show. If you're a woman, and you star in a show, your body will get dissected and talked about -- whether positively or negatively. It just will be. Not anticipating that made me wonder whether she is neurodivergent. I poked around online about that but didn't see anything one way or the other.

Marcus Bressler કહ્યું...

Nothing wrong with porn? Hmmm. There is a LOT of porn that is just nasty, brutal, and disgusting. Not all, though. You must separate the wheat from the chaff. If internet porn was available when I was a just-into-puberty teen, I would never have come out of my bedroom.

Dunham's tattoos may have been an expression of her OCD, a ritual that she felt she had to go through to calm herself and make things "alright." "Girls" was a good show, IMO. Much of that had to do with Judd Apatow (who's work I usually don't like).

"We Kill for Love: The Lost World of the Erotic Thriller" is a documentary about the direct to video flicks that were popular in the age of VCRs and Blockbuster. Apparently, there were an awful lot of them. Were these movies porn? Perhaps not, but when one of the actresses appeared in an ad for Ted Cruz years later, the talk was all about the "porn star" in the political commercial. Just what is and what isn't porn is hard to say. "Soft core porn" in particular is very much in the eye of the beholder.

This created the Karen problem we are now crushing.

2nd wave feminism was designed by and for elite predatory men.

They used women like Dunham to trick a generation of women into being whores and wages slaves.

Karen got a college degree, got a job in HR, swiped right on tinder for 15 years and lived the girl boss fantasy.

Now they are 40-60 and they are fat alone and unhappy. Or they married someone like Doug Emhoff or Bill Clinton and they are fat alone and unhappy.

These women like rapists. They support rapists. It is the type of man that they respect and they empower.

Democrat men are violent and abusive. Democrat women are picked and groomed to support and enable that.

Dunham not reporting a rapist, if it really happened, is like not yelling fire in a theater going up in flames. What contempt for future victims. Like Anthony Bourdain, caught paying off his mistresses' underaged sex partner -- legally pedophelia. Neither should have re-emerged into public life until they made all possible recompense: Dunham needs to file a police report or retract her claims; Bourdain is unfortunately beyond consequences for that sordid act.
