As here in SE NC, though, in FL you have to assume any body of water has an alligator in it. Hard way to learn that lesson.

When attacking prey, crocodilians, including American alligators usually go into a behavior known as a death role which disorients the victim. Crocs and alligators kill by drowning their prey. The bite itself typically isn't fatal. The crocodilian bite is among the strongest of living animals, but its teeth have evolved for grasping rather than cutting or tearing like a shark's. The suchian's almost unbreakable grip makes the death roll maneuver nearly inescapable. The prey struggles uselessly against the rolling, exhausts itself, and drowns. Later, the croc may roll the corpse to twist off a limb for easy swallowing. Two or more may cooperate in the dismemberment.
The fact that this girl was not subjected to the death roll suggests predation was not the motive for the attack. Female alligators are remarkably protective of their young. Defensive attacks are not unheard of.
She should find and link up with that Colorado dude who killed a cougar with his bare hands. Their children will be naturally selected to wrangle bears, and their children's children kill white sharks with naught but a glance, and so forth...

Alligators have weak jaw muscles for opening. Very strong for clamping down. So if you can grab hold and hold the jaws closed you may escape, because he wont be able to open his jaws.
Of course, this is in theory.
Certainly unrelated to the particular story, but I feel like with the pop-up ads, videos, links to other news feeds and the like, newspapers don't actually want you to read a story that they put online.

It does raise the question. As a boy my uncle (a resolute alcoholic to the end) would drain half a bottle of Drambuie of a Tennessee morning in a few King Charles Coffees before we all headed into the woods to hunt etc. He joked, "if it tastes funny to me I'll taste funny to the ticks." Strangely enough he never seemed to get bit, but that might have something to do with them sensing he wasn't healthy.
I've often wondered if BAC has any affect on mosquitoes and other blood-suckers. Maybe Grok would know.

Don't swim in fresh water below the Fall Line if you can't see the bottom.
Alligators drown you and leave you underwater and come back later to eat you. This one was in the come back later stage.

Here in Florida when you enter the water, either salt or fresh, you are no longer on top of the food chain.
I have to admire her ability to fight off that attack. Tough girl.
I really don't understand why we tolerate alligators/crocodiles. If a small fraction of Florida humans carried handguns, and killed these things every time we encountered them, they would either go extinct, or become very shy of humans.
Of course, this is exactly how humans used to behave, back before eco-freco virtue-signalers somehow became masters of our Universe. Somehow, things that kill people are now "necessary". Just shoot the fucking thing. What's the issue? If it were in your back yard, would you try to pet it? Bang! Dead. End of story, problem solved.
I gather there's something you can do with the hide, if you feel like skinning the thing. Ick. I suppose they're edible, come to that.
Back in '03, my wife and I were staying with a woman in South Georgia, who had a pond on her land. Her dogs would swim in the pond, and she was worried, because there was a cottonmouth in that pond. I was not worried. I bought a bolt-action 22 rifle, and some 22 shot-shells. And stalked the thing.
I have to say, it knew I was stalking it, and it was very hard to get a shot at it. Eventually, my wife caught it draped over the limb of a tree growing in the pond, and put a load of birdshot into it. We skinned it, and pinned the hide to a board. The chickens ate the rest. With relish.
Jupiter has a point. But habitat is declining. Do we really want to radically reduce populations of wolves, alligators, coyotes, raccoons, possums, and everything else? I am conflicted.
So, our daughter's cat unexpectedly interacted with our dog - let's leave THAT part at that. But to get her to let go, I was punching my dog in the face as hard as I could, over and over - I am still traumatized.
She did let go. The cat survived with no deep wounds. My husband bled all over the place from the dog's claws, as far as we know. I'm still traumatized, as I said.
They aren’t much of a risk if you don’t do risky things like swimming in fresh water or walk your dog near fresh water (or salt water for that matter- poor Pippet 🦈😞). We have a gator over ten feet in the back yard lagoon, he likes our bank when the grass is low. It’s fine. The only time I’ve had any concern is during mating season a younger one defended his pond on the golf course and tried to head me off as I tried to walk passed.
Daily visitors off my dock here in North Florida along the St Johns River. An ordinary day to day experience. They should be hunted vigorously and the population much thinned
