The final vote, 218 to 214, was mostly along party lines and came after Speaker Mike Johnson spent a frenzied day and night toiling to quell resistance in his own ranks that threatened until the very end to derail the president’s signature measure. With all but two Republicans in favor and Democrats uniformly opposed, the action cleared the bill for Mr. Trump’s signature, meeting the July 4 deadline he had demanded.

“House Passes Sweeping Bill to Fulfill President’s Domestic Agenda.”

Good.
It’s a start
And the badness begins.
Now that it's going to be passed, hopefully somebody can read it and provide a balanced and nuanced view of how it stacks up, compared to similar previous bills. All we've heard is the dreaded hyperbole from both directions.
I don't know, after all Trump's bullshit love of the working man, how there is anything in this bill that actually helps working people (except for the bone thrown with no tax on tips and overtime). Along with the gutting of agencies that protect the health and safety of workers, what has Trump done for the middle or working class during his second term?
I want one (1) Trump supporter with a set of testes to address the Trump Baby Welfare Entitlement. Just one Trumper. If Obama had proposed $1000 Obama Babies, would we all be cool with that? Someone explain to me what will stop the Dems from taking $1000 Trump babies and turning them into $10,000 AOC babies? How are you going to feel when black babies get an extra $50,000 reparations payment in their "Trump accounts"? All of these things are fait accompli once the Dems get re-elected.
The craziest American entitlement ever was enacted with ZERO debate. Trump was a a Trojan Horse for Marxism on America soil. But look on the bright side: at least he brutalized immigrants! That's that matters, right?
You fuckers have lost the plot.
Not a great day for a America but a pretty good one
the odds the Times will get any of this right, see the previous Gellman syndrome is exceedingly slim
DD delivers the stupid. Thanks.
“ Along with the gutting of agencies that protect the health and safety of workers, what has Trump done for the middle or working class during his second term?”
Oh, I don’t know. How about using the threat of tariffs to get companies to bring back manufacturing jobs to the US? Or working to lower energy costs, which are a factor in the price of literally everything? Or working to lower inflation, even including food items like eggs? How about the push to lower the regulatory burden on businesses, allowing them to invest in growing the business instead of ever increasing regulatory compliance costs? How about stemming the max influx of illegals into the country, which contributed to increased government spending and the housing shortage? So, compared to that, what have the Democrats done to improve the lives of working and middle class people for the past 10-20 years?
Now they have done it. Republicans, that is. According to Hakeem “The Dream” Jeffries, 45 million Americans will die, per Chuck Schumer, 37 million of US citizens will be afflicted with scurvy. Spartacus Booker added that 65 million children will starve by years end. How will we recover?
Almost everything pouring out of the left and the left's soviet media--> is lies.
No tax on social security benefits? Hmm. That’d be me.
Scurvy, well that's a new one, we haven't been out to see,
that performance by Jeffries was pitiful, thankfully 2/3 shorter than Booker
Humongous heaps of hot air and hyperbole--coming from both parties makes you sort of disgusted with the whole process. Every one of these posturing poltroons lies to you with a straight face. Supposedly Otto Von Bismarck said that if you like laws or sausage, you shouldn't be around when either is made.
But what particularly ticks me off occurs when the party balance in Congress is narrow. You then have "renegade" members of the narrow majority party extorting the country for their single votes. Senator Murkowski I'm looking at you, but you are simply one Congress critter amongst a smallish gang of thieves.
45 million Americans will die, per Chuck Schumer, 37 million of US citizens will be afflicted with scurvy.
…huh. Suddenly I do feel kinda dizzy 😵💫….
Winning!

Shorter NYT: The Democrats came this close to defeating it!!!!
Reality: Democrat shenanigans had no hope of defeating this bill.
It'll work, until it doesn't. Let's see what happens next.
More winning, this time with fireworks. Must see TV.
now we'll see what's in it, if they made them simpler instead of Jenga boxes,
I can’t believe the bill passed after the nut rep from KY locked up 10 republican no votes, as the press told me. A solid outcome that will allow some long term fixes, even though 50 mm people will die when Trump signs it.
It's the Jews' fault!
he was negotiating for leverage,

The main things are: 1) maintaining current tax levels. The Democrats voting against this are voting for massive, unheard of increase in taxes. 2) Regarding DJT policies in general, nto this specific bill responding to your working class comments: Incentivizing oil production to decrease energy costs, knocking out inflation, stimulating job market, deporting illegals and stopping funds paying them to be here including housing, food, education and medical care. Deporting illegals and so stimulating the labor market and decreasing their crime.
The Republican party is now the home of the working man. The Democrat party is for the ultra-wealthy connected and welfare recipients and illegal aliens.
Constitutional amendment proposal:
To be signed by the President, a bill must be no longer than five pages in totality, including all text, errata, footnotes, end notes, preambles, postambles, titles, signatures, definitions, and any other associated sections and attachments . References may not be used as a means to bypass this requirement, any text assuming the force of law must reside within the bill. Nor may article 1 authorities be delegated to article 2 or article 3 organizations for the purposes of adding, de jure or de facto, content to the plain text language of the bill.
Proposed amendment to the amendment: The bill must be written to a level that the average citizen eligible to vote in federal elections may clearly understand.
Now that tip income will be tax-free, all my consulting bills will go out as,

I mean, what are we even doing here?
‘CBO says it'll add a trillion dollars to our public debt. How do you square that?’ ~ CNBC

note how the Dems did everything according to the Squad
The fact our resident leftists are whining and sniveling - without actually knowing what's in the damn thing - is good enough for me to support it.
@narciso, noticed. Bolsheviks are firmly in control of the DNC.
Pretty much everyone working now or who did work got a tax reduction from the OBBB. It kept the tax credits of Trump's first term and added $1000 child tax credit, said no tax on tips or overtime, added a $1000 tax credit on Social Security. So all workers and all seniors paying taxes got a tax reduction. That's pretty much everybody.
The bill made many of Trump's orders statutory law, meaning Congress is beginning to step up its game.
Meanwhile, Trump persuaded NATO to take on $440 billion in defense spending we used to have to pay.
Trump kept Iran from getting the bomb and half the country knows that if Iran had the bomb some large city in the US would have been bombed. Regular US citizens somewhere have been spared an ultimate horror.
And I could make a longer list. But the right knows all this already while the left is too busy absorbing news from several years back to learn what is happening right now. So there isn't much point in such a list.
So I'll make a prediction - Trump will get the Nobel Peace Prize. He deserves it but most think the left will refuse it him. I, too, think the left will refuse but I think there will be some sort of uprising - maybe the Pakistanis and the Rwandans asking why peace in their areas means nothing to the Swedes, maybe some event we can't foresee. And then refusing Trump the prize will look as bad to everyone as it now does to MAGA. And he'll get it. So, my fellow commenters, Secret Chuck and the rest on the lone, lorn left, be the first on the left to step up and call for the Nobel Peace Prize for Trump. Gain a rep as far-seeing. Now's your chance.
thank you! Hakeem Jeffries @RepJeffries !!
we COULDN'T have gotten this passed; with out YOUR moronic grandstanding!
Thomas Massie (Kentucky) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania) are the traitors. They will now be primaried and run out of Washington DC on a fucking rail.
I was at Whole Foods earlier. People slumped over in the aisles, draped over the coffee bar. it was apocalyptic , just like Schumer and the leftists said.
It's a pretty lousy bill, but better than anything Biden and Pelosi wanted. Hopefully trump has put a few of the Rs in their place, and we can get single bills, up and down votes, instead of these pork fests.
I'll be praying all day today, hoping the leftists on this blog survive. Their record of support for millions of illegals, letting criminals walk, and loving Palestine tell me that it will be a long 4 years.
I give them credit tho, every single prediction they have made has been wrong, not just on this bill, but on anything to do with 'big Daddy' Trump. and yes, he is your Daddy, and your President for the next 3.5 years. Followed by Vance.
yes when the music stops, you have to grab a chair, (actually vote)
Thomas Massie and Rand Paul (R's - KY) will always have my support. Stand firm Massie, millions are with you, along with Musk.
"Fight, fight, fight"
"Now that tip income will be tax-free, all my consulting bills will go out as "gratiuty."
That's why this part of the bill will shortly be rescinded. Lots of this bill will be rescinded. Starting with the parts that convinced Republicans to vote for it, such as cutting the tax on Social Security.
Republicans implemented that tax to start with.
But nothing done about Judicial over-reach and their blocking enforcement of the immigration laws.
I'm sure it is terrible. The current composition of the country does not allow for it to be good.
That said, is it worse or better that what a similarly divided but Democrat Congress would have passed for Kamala Harris? The answer is better and like the lesser of evils always is, it is bitter and unsatisfying.
The perfect is the enemy of the good enough for now.
The deaths Schumer predicted are starting to roll in: Hollywood's Michael Madsen dead of Big Beautiful Bill today.
Are there preliminary figures yet as to how many millions of people the bill is going to kill, or will that be released later?
No tax on tips sounds great but will really have very little impact. Your average waitress at Denny's or Olive Garden pay very little federal tax to start with. Yes, there are tipped employees who make six figures, but they are few and far between (e.g., waiters at fine dining restaurants, doormen at fancy buildings in NYC). Why should they pay less tax than a nurse, plumber or electrician?
"The perfect is the enemy of the good enough for now."
Good enough is a pretty high bar. Or so I'm told.
Heck, closing down USAID is going kill 4 million according to a “study”. Who’s going to be left?
"Why should they pay less tax than a nurse, plumber or electrician?"
They shouldn't. That means nurses, plumbers and electricians should get a tax cut, too.
Good to see the left getting on board with lower taxes, now if we can get them to agree to less spending.
Only $1000 tax credit for seniors? Get back in there!!
I kid I kid….
So so glad this is done so Trump can get on with stopping all the wars…
"The perfect is the enemy of the good enough for now."
The first time I heard it, I agreed. The second time I heard it, I was dubious, but still agreed. The ten thousandth time I heard it, the image of a frog being slowly boiled entered my mind and I said "nah...if you're going to boil me, do it perfectly the first time or it's not good enough for now."

"Why should they pay less tax than a nurse, plumber or electrician?"
They shouldn't of course, but this isn't about taxes. It's about messages and soundbites, and this is a good one for Trump and those who voted for it (Republicans). There are a lot of voters who like this and very few who don't in all parties. It will be used against the Dems for years.
One of the benefits of consuming foreign news is learning that we are not alone in our problems. The Brits just finished a horribly contentious vote over a welfare-cutting bill, which in their case was sponsored by the governing, self-proclaimed socialist Labour Party!
It's just hard out there for a pimp worldwide.

Just grateful to have a budget. The first one in ten years!
If you are waiting for something perfect to come out of DC you are going to be waiting for a ..very......long .............time.
This is a start, a very good start.
So, what's next on the list for us to argue about and fight over now that the BBB has passed and off the table? I like that Biden's Build Back Better has become Trump's Big Beautiful Bill.
From the Tax Foundation:
Big Picture: "The One Big Beautiful Bill Act provides certainty for US households by permanently extending the TCJA individual rates and brackets and makes permanent one of the most pro-growth tax policies available: expensing for investment in short-lived assets and domestic research and development. However, it focuses too heavily on political carveouts like the “no tax on tips and overtime” exemptions and misses a critical opportunity to address the deficit and simplify the code. "
However, it focuses too heavily on political carveouts like the “no tax on tips and overtime” exemptions and misses a critical opportunity to address the deficit and simplify the code.
That would be bad if this were the last opportunity we'd ever have to address the deficit and simplify the code.
Was it?
Not a fan of the process, but I am happy with the result as it is. Perfection is often the enemy of good or good enough, and I think this is good enough. As JL Oliver notes above, happy to have a passed budget, and also consider this the final nail in the Biden Administration coffin.
Now Congress can get to work on a bunch of other interesting endeavors. Maybe some Congressional investigations could be in the offer. It seems a few have been put on the tee by the Administration ready for Congress to take a swing at them.
In August 1967 I was a couple weeks into navy boot camp. We had a session on pay and benefits that included an in depth explanation of the SS system.
We were told, semi-officially not to worry about it since it would be bankrupt and/or shut down by 1980.
And,like the arctic ice cap, ss's demise has been 10 years in the future and always will be.
I'll be very, very, surprised if anyone legally entitled to Social Security or medicar/medicaid loses a penny in benefits.

Here's why Social Security can never go bankrupt: The Second Amendment.
Americans own approximately 258 million handguns and long rifles in possession of American citizens. All 258 million of those are portable and can be brought to Washington DC within a maximum of 4 days travel time. It would take about 10 minutes to execute every member of the Congress, Judiciary and Executive branch found there.
So they keep those checks coming, amigo.
A lot of accomplishment in the bill and too much spending, but the Democrats are damned lucky they didn't stop it. That would have been a campaign disaster for them all, and on top the extensive damage they are already doing to themselves. Bless their hearts They are damned when they win and damned when they don't.
How does it benefit me a 68 year old senior. Increased deduction for people on social security. Increase standard deduction. Codifies the border wall and adds enough resources to deport illegal aliens. WHICH will reduce pressure on state finances. Removes illegals from Medicaid
And forces slackers to get off their ass to get their Medicaid/snap Bennie’s which extends Medicare/medicaid for actual recipients. Codifies and speeds up development of cheaper energy which will stop inflation in its tracks. Allows expensing of business purchases which will increase economic output and increase my portfolio. That’s enough for me, toady.
FML @ 4:48
Oh, boy. There's a lot to unpack in that paragraph of yours. First of all your firearm ownership numbers are low. Very, very low. Secondly your innumeracy shows a lack of basic arithmetic understanding. Nobody is going to DC over their Social Security. There are offices in every major city in every state.
Those will do for now.

A win for Trump 47. He’s racking them up
So will all of the progressives take the flavor aid in protest? Will they all wear a white shirt with black pants? Will they run around tomorrow, in circles, scream and shout and burn things down? Finally leave for one of the great socialist utopias that already exist, like North Korea or China? Maybe Cuba? No? Figures.
I am glad the bill passed. If there are parts that truly are bad, they can be addressed separately. Maintaining the tax cuts for the middle class is huge.
Well, I guess I'm going to have to cough up that extra $200 for the suppressor I want.
@Joe Bar, or you could just make your own. It's the worst kept secret that most GOBs in every uncucked state in this union have a can, registered or not. Hell, you can even print them.
The bill does not "Fulfill President's Sweeping Agenda."
It prevents the largest tax increase in U.S. History, which would have resulted in the Republicans getting wiped out in the mid-terms.
It remains to be seen whether the Republicans have the electoral support to actually make serious spending cuts. With things going the way they are, I think they will. Then the question will be whether they have the integrity to do so.
I am going to miss Fredo, Inga, Bich, and Gadfly when the effects of this bill kick in and they all die as predicted.
“ Federal revenue collection for June 2025 is not explicitly stated in the search results. However, data indicates that federal revenue collection for the first eight months of fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 - May 2025) totaled $3.5 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). This is a 6% increase compared to the same period last year. The CBO projects that the federal government will collect $5.2 trillion in revenue for the entire fiscal year 2025.”
"I am going to miss Fredo, Inga, Bich, and Gadfly..."
You'll be heartened to know they'll still be voting, anyway.
"It's easier to go left on economics than right on culture." I put it in quotes because I am far from the first person to say this, but it's very true.
It's just a bill. That passed. Many came before it and many will come after. We will see what happens.
"Quite a body of work. Always could be depended on for the scariest, wild man characters. RIP."
Psssssst... one thread up. I think.
A lot of people say that lefty politics is like a one way ratchet, well you know what else is like a one way ratchet? A snare, you know, the kind that people sometimes use to catch rabbits. They work because rabbits can't walk backwards, and once they put their head in the little noose, they can only press on forward as it tightens until it strangles them.
I don't know why I bother with these kinds of posts, though. It's pretty plain that nobody understands the stuff I write and people accuse me of all kinds of phantasmagoria that arises from their misunderstandings of what I write. Maybe Grok would get it. Whatever. I don't care, and if I don't care, nobody cares.
Aught Severn, my father was on a presidential commission regarding some aspects of aviation safety. Six months commuting to DC.

I’m rooting you’re correct on all counts…
Former law clerk,
You are not exactly wrong but like most, you seem to miss the point on how it is funded.
It is not a insurance with payout based on payin. Justice Stone told Frances Perkins that the Supremes would find that unconstitutional.
It is a straight tax,on income, perfectly constitutional.
And, separately, it is a welfare payment like SNAP, food stamps, section 8 housing etc.
For the story of how stone told Perkins to structure ss see
https://www.ssa.gov/history/tea.htm
John Henry
FLc,
That is to say that SS can't go bankrupt any more than the army or national parks can go bankrupt it can only be funded or defunded by congress. And congress could do that without reducing the ss tax collection. One does not depend on the other.
If they did, that might trigger the reaction you posited.
John Henry
"And, separately, it is a welfare payment like SNAP, food stamps, section 8 housing etc."
Are the amount of benefits received via SNAP, food stamps, section 8 housing etc. based on previous taxes paid?
Nothing substantive needs to happen when the Social Security Trust Fund is emptied because the SS Trust Fund is a fiction. The same amount of general purpose revenue can go to SS recipients the month before it goes to zero as the month after it goes to zero. Whether or not that does happen is politics, not finances.
Each president has to do his part in adding trillions to the national debt. It is a thoroughly bipartisan effort. There is simply no mechanism to hold anyone responsible for this astonishing profligacy.
IDK what Trump babies are either. Do newborns get a grant of $1k in a savings account or something?
"Still waiting for someone to defend Trump Babies. NONE of you? Literally NONE of you can defend this massive new government entitlement? You fuckers are in a cult. Reality no longer matters."
I'll defend it, although I haven't thought much about it. The US populace is woefully, woefully stupid about financial savings and investing. The schools won't teach it because they hate capitalism.
But let's think about a child who has an account with some decent bucks in it. Watching that account go up and go down. Possibly watching the stock market and trying to understand it.
Then assuming that it is invested in something like SPY. They would see the below per grok. Do you think that they would be paying attention?
"Final Answer: Approximately $5,560, with a range of $4,000 to $7,700 depending on market performance."
45 million are going to DIE! How can they die when net neutrality already killed them?
Doesn't the bill extend the large tax cuts enacted in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017, Trump's first year?
The tax cuts that were set to automatically expire in 2025.
The tax cuts that many said would never be extended.
We got a big break from that. Most of you did too. Now you'll get to keep it.
"Doesn't the bill extend the large tax cuts enacted in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017, Trump's first year?"
Yes, probably the most important reason it had to pass, warts and all.
"Do newborns get a grant of $1k in a savings account or something?"
Only those born between 2025 and 2029 (the next 4 years.) The money will stay with the government, and they'll pay virtually no interest on it for 18 years. The child can then withdraw the money for a house down payment, or college. It will be worth roughly $1,700 after 18 years at 3% annual interest.
It's stupid. The value of the money will be eaten away by 18 years of inflation and just creates a new way for the government to spend the money, with an IOU placed in the account.
Basically it's a vote-buying scheme using taxpayer dollars. Ya'll work hard now, and remember to pay your income taxes on time. I'm getting a huge chunk of that money from you suckers.
“Still waiting for someone to defend Trump Babies”
You do know that same child credit was operative during GWB’s administration, right?
" The money will stay with the government, and they'll pay virtually no interest on it for 18 years."
…
"just creates a new way for the government to spend the money, with an IOU placed in the account."
…
"Basically it's a vote-buying scheme using taxpayer dollars."
So, it's a lot like Social Security. I won't defend that, but I also don't think it merits torpedoing making the tax cuts permanent to fight it.
What happened to SALT?
I don't understand the math. 3.3 trillion over ten years is 330 billion a year; how much did Biden add in a single year or two? Was his add also over ten years or was it trillions in a year?
"I don't understand the math."
You're not supposed to. I've seen this bill advertised as both a debt cutter and a debt increaser. The sorry fact is you have to figure it out for yourself, because you'll never understand it from purposefully opaque news articles.

If you are going to choose between subsidizing people having children and really anything else the government subsidizes subsidizing baby creation is the best thing the government could possibly put money into.
I would prefer that only people who serve the country and people who raise children in male/female households get to vote.
But subsidizing the birth of future generations is still something any intelligent society would do.
"I would prefer that only people who serve the country and people who raise children in male/female households get to vote."
So would I, and I don't meet either category (unless grandchildren count).
I'd settle for taxpayers.
All the feelings and outrages do not matter. What matters is what happens next. outcomes.

If you have grand children by definition you have a stake in the future and would be a citizen with voting rights imo.
Sitting around a campfire with extended family. And then some knucklehead asked if the bill had been passed. When told that it had immediately whined ‘well that means he can cancel elections.’ After noticing she was getting this info from Facebook I thought about trying to engage but thought better of it so she could continue her misinformed rant. It’s a shame that something that doesn’t actually impact her day-to-day life upset her so and that at 52 years of age she still lacks the emotional maturity to manage those feelings, but I guess for some folks it’s feelz uber alles.
"52"
sigh
‘well that means he can cancel elections.’
And that's where Democrats differ. They do hold elections but then. ignore the results when the wrong person wins.
It will be fine. We're having another moment as when Gingrich and Clinton joined hand on welfare reform.
It fixed a lot, and nobody deserving suffered. Calm down. Read the bill. It's called constructive bipartisanship, though the Democrats are too far off the ranch 28 years later.
Learn something.
What this man has accomplished in less than 6 months is nothing short of astounding. Those nit-picking the bill can rightfully claim a disappointment or a fear here or there. But in reality, this is just a starting point and will keep the US economy humming. This bill is a start. The time for cutting departments, cutting the fat is still to come (though the USAID grift machine is disabled for now).
Also to come, a widening of the Abraham Accords. Something more is going to happen in the Middle East. Israel having relations with Saudi Arabia and even Syria is coming. Gaza will get rebuilt. Hostages are going to come home. Peace is coming to that region- with or without Iran.
Never seen the likes of Trump before. We'll never see the likes of him again.
