"He was insanely excited. I was sleeping in, and he comes crawling on top of the bed like a little kid. He’s like, 'Honey, we got to get up. We got to get there.' When he got that look, well, he was hard to resist."

Said Helen Comperatore, describing her husband Corey, "a man she met in kindergarten, started dating in high school and had been married to since just after he turned 21."

Quoted in "Revisiting Butler, one year later/President Trump is still processing the attack that nearly took his life, while a victim’s widow mourns" (WaPo, free-access link).

The article is by Salena Zito, adapted from her new book, "Butler: The Untold Story of the Near Assassination of Donald Trump and the Fight for America’s Heartland" (commission earned).

Salena Zito was there that day: "'Saleeeeena,' Trump said, exaggerating the middle of my name. 'Look at her hair, everyone — doesn’t she have the best hair in journalism? Possibly in America.'"

Imagine if someone were murdered like that at a Kamala rally. The media would never let it go.

That’s a heartbreaking story about Mr. Comperatore… and he was shot and killed while trying to protect his family… he died a hero.

As I told my wife the other day: just imagine how different our world would be if Trump hadn’t turned and moved his head a fraction of an inch.

I was born and raised in Butler, PA. Wonderful place to grow up. Very little crime, surrounded by beautiful woods and farmland. When I was teenager most of the good jobs died with the closing of the Pullman Standard rail car building company where both my parents had great union welding jobs their whole lives. I left in 1981 for California with $345. Got to L.A. with $40. It's been a wonderful adventure. Kind of surreal to hear that small town of 13k people mentioned on the news all the time. The population was 15K when I lived there. It was upwardly mobile middle class, but became rustbelt poor with high unemployment and drug addiction. Still beautiful country though.

And now the most demented of the demented left are trying to gin-up more violence and resistance against a duly elected administration and their fellow citizens.

bagoh20 చెప్పారు...

My parents got 2 weeks paid vacation every year and 13 weeks paid every 4th year, full paid healthcare, and lots of other benefits, and it was the highest paying jobs in town. No wonder the company went bankrupt.

I know several people who are certain that A) Trump wasn't hit by a bullet and B) It was a false flag operation to make him look better.

And they call us the conspiracy theorists. . . . .

bagoh20 చెప్పారు...

Not just Trump, but the whole country, and maybe the world, dodged a bullet that day.

The second part is really ridiculous. Who do they think did that, the Biden Administration?
TDS is a hell of a drug.

I just looked ... I'd say Selena's got a nice thick head of hair, but it's hardly noteworthy.

But bless her heart, it's probably her best feature.

I may buy her book, and dive through the Althouse portal.

The US Secret Service conspired to allow this shooting to occur and the FBI immediately began a cover-up operation. The Democrats were trying to murder Donald Trump.

And they're not done trying.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

If I'm not mistaken Trump is the first POTUS candidate to be shot at, and hit by an assassian since Reagan. I'm amazed the WaPo has an article on it, since the MSM has done everything to sweep it under the rug. Because it builds sympathy for Orange man.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

6 secret service agents have gotten suspended based on the Senate/House investigations. But not fired. IMO, Biden's administration deliberately understaffed Trump's SS detail. IRC, they refused to give RFK jr. SS protection. And filled the SS full of Biden cronies and Affirmative action babies.

I just used your portal to order the book. I was going to eventually read it anyway. I heard an interview with Salena about the book yesterday. It sounds like a riveting account, detailing so much not talked about in the 'news'. And I regularly read Salena's columns anyway. She is a throw back to old style reporting, from the ground, up.

paminwi చెప్పారు...

Salena is a one of a kind. Her reporting is great and she is one of the few that said Trump would win in 2016. She traveled the back roads of a number of states, did many interviews with people she met, and knew from those interactions that Trump would win. I strongly recommend you follow her on X.

I have little doubt SS softened their security to allow this to happen. The proof is the head of SS in apress conference refusing to resign instead of committing seppuku or jumping off a Holiday Inn balcony. Perhaps it will be forever unknowable how many other government organizations were involved. One thing leftie government is good at is erasing their tracks…

I started the book yesterday after listening to her interview with Mike Rowe.

It's kind of a cliche that couples who meet and marry at a relatively young age are "too young" to know what they want and eventually will get divorced. But I know a few lucky couples like that, and they have some of the most successful marriages I've seen. None of them feel that they missed out on something by not participating in "the dating scene," or whatever most people go through to find a life partner.

Union contract? We kind of let them accelerate the destruction of US industry. I say "we" because everyone was in on it: the unions, the companies, the government, the voters, investors and consumers who could have chosen to do something, etc.

I hope we don't have to re-learn that lesson as the country re-industrializes.

Probably helps that nearly everyone has a bad taste in their mouth when they say "union" nowadays....

Megyn Kelly interviewed Salena Zito. In that, Zito said Trump called her seven times the day after, just trying to process what had happened. Remarkable.

Pullman Standard went bankrupt because passenger rail died when the interstate system was built.

Wince చెప్పారు...

Can the Comperatore family sue the Secret Service and the US government based on the congressional findings leading to the agents’ suspensions? Even if not cognizable as a claim, can the government settle before dismissal like when the left got the quick infusion of cash from the Biden DOJ based on arrests made against rioters during the summer of love?

Peachy చెప్పారు...

Unions used to be a good thing. Now they are mostly democrat grift machines.

Leland చెప్పారు...

Selena Zito writes about the impact of the Pullman Car Company in the book. As she does, she makes it seem like a critical piece of information to understand the setting of events.

The left are so collectively VILE - not one drop of sympathy for Cory.

Not one drop..
this is why leftist democrats are SHIT.

Anthony చెప్పారు...

I like her writing, mostly, but she can't seem to write a single article (I think I found one, once) without using the word 'community' in it.

bagoh20 చెప్పారు...

"Pullman Standard went bankrupt because passenger rail died when the interstate system was built."

It didn't make survival easy, but passenger train cars are still produced around the world and the international market expanded after that. I remember the battles when they were going down. The union would not budge including generous retirement benefits. People were not used to seeing unions lose at that time and didn't believe the company threats of closure. The plant was also very dated and had not kept up with advances. In the end the employees lost out. My parents got pennies on the dollar of their retirement, which they were always told was guaranteed.

bagoh20 చెప్పారు...

Cory would be hero to all if he was a Harris or Biden supporter, and we all know it. That's he's not to all is a sad thing about our politics.

Howard చెప్పారు...

The Banksters got your parents retirement by jacking interest rates sky high, BagoH2O. Then Reagan cut their taxes and bailed out the savings and loan industry instead of all of the manufacturing that they managed to send offshore.

bagoh20 చెప్పారు...

The retirement was never adequately funded by the company, and the assets were valueless by the time they closed down. The term "rustbelt" was never more appropriate than to this company which was literally acres of rusted equipment and old inventory that cost more to clean up than it was worth. There was never going to be any money left, and it was obvious for years. It was sad to see the death of a company that had built and provided so much to the community for 80 years. It essentially supported my entire family for 3 generations. In addition to my parents both working there, so did my grandparents, and during WWII my grandmother moved from a rivet heater to crane operator when the men went to war. My brother also worked there, but I was never allowed as I was the designated college boy of the family. I'm glad Dad wasn't around to see me drop out and the company close. This young man going west at 23, was the best decision of my life.

What I still find so amazing about this is the lack of panic from the crowd. Imagine the lethal stampede of AWFULs if a similar thing happened at a Harris rally. Or any Democrat gathering.

Yeah, all three of the attendees would have been in full panic mode.

So is the Secret Service corrupt and complicit or just lazy and incompetent? They have a history of alcohol and sex scandals going back to Obama's trip to Colombia and Kennedy's fateful trip to Dallas.

Where was I when I first heard that Trump had been shot? I have no idea. Is that because we find out everything these days when we are on the internet? Or was it because it happened at six on a Saturday evening?

"What I still find so amazing about this is the lack of panic from the crowd."
What got me every time was when they stood up in unison, cheered, and raised their fists right after Trump did. They didn't know the shooting was over.
