"[F]or Mr. Mamdani to get elected in November, he may need to win over segments of the city’s business class, or at least persuade them that he intends no harm...."
"Last week, Mr. Mamdani, a state assemblyman and a democratic socialist, met separately with skeptical members of the Partnership for New York City and with Black business executives, who grilled him over his socialist economic agenda and challenged him over some of his stances opposing the wealthy and supporting Palestinian causes.... 'You have to make sure that the city creates some wealth, and then you have to decide and make sure it’s distributed fairly,' said Kevin Ryan, founder and chief executive of AlleyCorp, who participated in a group interview Mr. Mamdani had with tech leaders last Wednesday. 'He’s very focused on the latter, which I think is a very fair point and I’m supportive of that, but you can’t forget the former.' Mr. Ryan said that some questioned whether Mr. Mamdani was merely 'tacking to the center to get elected, or are his thoughts evolving over time?'"

The City creates wealth? Which department?
Best of luck. Vote for shit. Eat shit
With guys like Kevin Ryan holding influence, NYC is doomed. Who's distributing your wealth fairly, Kevin? I'm gonna guess Kevin Ryan is a millionaire and that he keeps as much of that money for himself as possible. When he talks about distributing wealth, he means someone else's money, not his.
What a cynical readership you have, Althouse! Including me.
None of the above. Neo-Marxist/ Pro-Dead-Jews = snake.
Mamdani will evolve for appearances. Make no mistake, he is who he is. Take him at his word.
" or at least persuade them that he intends no harm...."
And they would be fools to think he won't do any harm...
But then NYC is full of those kind of people.
"tacking to the center"? Hahahahahahaha...
Taqiyah Sunrise.
....said the scorpion to the frog.
When progressives have "evolving" thoughts...they disappear once they are elected, and then they go back to being the liars they can't help being.
…or at least persuade them that he intends no harm...
There is more hypocrite than Hippocrates in Mamdani, and his thoughts are evolving — toward money and power.
ah but he's so cute. with his squinty eyes and big broad smile.
NYC - the next frontier for the combo-meal that is Neo-Marxism and Radical Hamas ideology.
Wherever he's tacking it won't be anywhere near any political center- he'll be an out and proud confiscators of wealth and commerce, a la Boston's Mayor...with more than a touch of Hamas...
Won’t we be stunned if he loses? NYC is full of loons. This is just tactics. If the business community believes he is mellowing, they deserve him.
I wonder if he will apply Sharia law punishment for shoplifters.
C: Lying
Justabill, for laughs last year I compiled a list of all California state agencies. Roughly 150 as I recall. I should review it again; probably there is one named something like "Growth Coordination" or some such. Or more likely, "Gathering and Sharing Equity Management"
I missed any expression of “tacking to the center.”
Kevin Ryan squats to pee.
96%! He might fool New Yorkers, but he isn’t fooling us!
Mamdani can never experience evolving thoughts, else he wouldn't identify himself as a mythical being.
Prepare for his eventual win. The choices are not strong...(even tho Adams should be a shoe-in) and the vote is purposefully diluted to enhance the probability of the Hamasian savior.
I interpreted “tacking to” as “tacking in the general direction of.” And he doesn’t have to go far because he is — correctly, I think — counting on Sliwa, Adams, and Cuomo to split the anti-Mamdani vote.
It is reassuring to know that the pirates, after having looted the ship, will distribute the booty fairly.
People who vote for Democrats are either amoral or are incapable of the critical thinking that allows the rest of us to vote for politicians who actually reflect our views. NYC Dems will elect Mamdani and will pretend he is not destroying what’s left of their city.
Normal people call "tacking to the center" lying.
Tack to the center. Get elected. Rule like a lefty.
Democrats and especially communists seldom change.
Mamdani is
#3 Lying to get elected, knowing that the idiots in New York have a collective IQ of about 8.
And so all revolutions go. Pander to the rich or well-placed affirmative action whores, add to the government-dependent poor, while demonizing what's left of the dwindling "bourgeoise" working and middle classes, at least those not teacher union or SEIU members.
There has never been a different plan -- nor consequence. Staten Island should secede or move en masse. Goodby cops, firemen, and nurses.
Apparently 4% of the people who voted in the poll are either useful idiots or just plain idiots.
The handful of moderates left in the city will probably push the election to Cuomo, since Mamdani is nuts, Sliwa can't win and Adams is yesterday's man.
What do our Leftist friends here have to say about him? Would you vote for Mamdami, Coumo, or Adams? Just wondering.
I look forward to the destruction of NYC and the object lesson coming as Mamdani predictably destroys the city and turns it into a 3rd world shithole with empty shelves and government run stores that have nothing to sell.
None of these people build or make anything. They are takers and they can only survive if they take other people’s lives and labor from them.
Tiktaalik Mamdani's thoughts will crawl out of a soupy sea and move about on lobe like fins for short periods before returning to the water.
If you run a company whose corporate headquarters is in NYC or SF, odds are you want to seem forward-looking and progressive. Your classmates, clubmates, and spouse certainly do, so a substantial part of the Manhattan business world may be interested in meeting Mamdani. Will that actually translate into support in the election? Probably not, but if he's elected, they'll have to work with him, so why not sound him out now?
The left lies as a matter of policy.
Specifically black business owners? Why not simply small business owners, or just business owners?
I guess they, as a specific seemingly favored group, are seeing that the Grift is going to Shift, and it's not in their favor.
"evolving thoughts" since last month!?
We may never know what his real thoughts are, but we do know he's a rich kid with the typical leftist rich kid upbringing and lack of experience with life as normal people live it.
Mamdani has no need to move to the center so long as there is a three way split among his adversaries.
Were I in control of significant assets whose value was dependent upon a socially healthy NYC, I would see that bad government will sooner or later destroy the value of my assets, and that it was in my interest to reduce my exposure to that inevitable outcome.
Most politicians, though not President Trump, tack to the center. Of course that’s what he’s doing.
Creola Soul: that'snot what committed Marxists do. They lie, cheat, and pillage.
Evolving thoughts seem rather uncommon in certain ideological circles.
Cuomo is yesterday's man.
Adams - A black Democrat - was smothered by the Deep State Slime machine because Adam's dared to speak honestly about the illegal migrant problem in NYC. He pointed out that Illegal immigrants were overwhelming public resources.
Then the corrupt Soros-deep state came after him with a manufactured crime.
He has no idea where "the center" is.
The Lena Dunham set will vote Mamdani.
“ Mr. Mamdani, a state assemblyman and a democratic socialist”
Literally every country in the world that has “democratic” or “socialist” in its name is an impoverished totalitarian shithole. But this time will be different! Let’s vote this guy into power!
The best indication of evolving thoughts is in changed behavior.
"...while the Democratic Socialists of America are contemplating how they would wield power and influence policy".
They already influence policy in New York. That's why the city is in the shape it's in. As for how they would wield power? There is sufficient history- more than we need- to understand how socialists 'wield' power once they obtain it. It's a display of the worst instincts in humans.
New Yorkers pride themselves on being a level of smart above the rest of the masses in the hinterlands west of the Hudson. Right now they are staring over the edge of an abyss. Let's see how smart they are.
Tacking is going in a direction you don’t want to go because it will allow you to tack later and get where you want to go. Are these business leaders stupid? Please tell me you will do the policy I want so you can tell me to F off later after I have already voted for you. Big brains in New York.
I doubt New York or its Wealthy will have much problem with Mamdani. Bill de Blasio was mayor for two terms and the city's industries just went on generating wealth, a portion of which was grifted off by the socialists and other welfare classes. The rich folks are still rich. They don't worry much about the harms inflicted on the poor or the working classes in the name of fairness or equity or whatever the current buzzwords are that hide the destructive nature of socialism. The rich go to the Kennedy Center and they don't ride the bus to get there. They don't know or care if the bus fare is zero or $100.

Exactly. Also mistakenly known as "tacking to the center"
For Mr. Mamdani to get elected in November, he may need to win over segments of the city’s business class, or at least persuade them that he intends no harm...."
The NYT apparently sets the bar low for trendy new Muslim socialist mayoral candidates. Take note, this is not an imperative - he 'may need' to win over segments of the business class....but it's not any absolute priority - and they're only 'segments'.
The business class is already in disfavor, then - those august guardians of the 'means of production'. The NYT is in the tank for the commie.
"persuade them that he intends no harm...."
But he does indeed mean them harm. So he will need to lie. Which is what the other Democrats have been trying to tell him.
he is 'the form of the destroyer,' and the city council would enable him,
Wilhelm caused enough injury to Gotham, you wanted more,
Mamdani will lie about his Marxist and pro-Hamas intentions at every opportunity between now and election day. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.
"Tacking to the center to get elected" -- could result in premature tacking.
"In sailing, tacking too soon is often referred to as "tacking in the header" or "premature tacking." This happens when a sailor initiates a tack before the boat has reached the optimal point to change direction, usually due to misjudging the wind shift or layline. It can result in losing ground to competitors or failing to make the mark efficiently. The term isn't always formal but is commonly used in racing contexts to describe a tactical error."
I hope he wins. I really do.
You hate New York that much,

Trump has no right-left ideology. He is a 60's JFK democrat.
If there is a "center" politically -which I do not think there is by the way- then that center is Trump because of his lack of ideological nature.
The only way you can call Trump "right wing" is if you place the center anywhere near where the democrats are. This is how people like Rogan and Musk became "right wing."
If you try to define "the center" or someone tries to say Xxxx Xxxx politician is "tacking to the center" it is always from a personal point of reference. There is no global definition of "the center."
"The Center" is always "what I believe" in the end because they are just trying to move "the center" closer to them.

I do as well. The world needs this object lesson.
A certain number of people in every generation are going to have to be sacrificed on the alter of Collectivism. There is always going to be a percentage of the population that cannot learn about collectivism the easy way.
They will have to learn the hard way.
New York City will vote to sacrifice themselves and be the lesson so that the rest of us can make better decisions. Of course they have the opportunity now to show they are not on average morally retarded and make a better choice. But I know which way I am predicting this goes.
New York City will hopefully be sufficient to convince a critical mass of our citizenry that collectivist government theft has really poor outcomes and the rest of us can learn from their pain and suffering.
In sailing terminology, tacking to the center puts you “in irons”, meaning you’re not going anywhere.
Mommy could make a movie about his tenure as NYC mayor, "Mamdani Messed-up Masala Monsoon".
Commenters writing they want him to win because it will be an object lesson. Seriously, what about Portland? What about San Francisco? What about Baltimore? How about Chicago? Or maybe the entire state of California?
How many lessons do we need? What makes you think another one will make any difference?
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, another fuzzy Muzzy is running to be mayor of the ruins of Minneapolis.

People in those places vote as they do because they like the results. The same will hold in New York. You may think you are gazing upon a shithole, while the denizens think it is cool and edgy and urban. The chaos, dirt, crime, drugs and lack of trust are not unfortunate side effects; they are the goal.
It's not good news for those who oppose him, but at least Mamdani is smooth. Omar Fateh cannot read aloud without stumbling over words and likely as a result of centuries of cousin marriage, resembles a Somali Hapsburg.
"The chaos, dirt, crime, drugs and lack of trust are not unfortunate side effects; they are the goal."
Which is fine, if that's what they want for themselves.
The problem is- they want that for you, too.
Show Mamdani, his Marxist politics and his Stimpy the Cat smile the fucking door.
It doesn't matter what Mamdani intends. His policies will have the result they always do.

Obviously more.
You are also missing the other benefit. As these large urban centers vote themselves into misery and collapse they are destroying their future political influence.
After Trump is done removing the illegals the blue cities use to pad their censor numbers there wont be many congressional seats coming out of these areas anymore.
Creola Soul said..."Most politicians, though not President Trump, tack to the center."
That may once have been true, but over the past twenty years or so, I think something else is going on.
Democratic politicians' hearts are on the Left, so they "tack to center", i.e., lie, for the general election, but then revert to form and actually govern from the Left.
Republican politicians' hearts are in the center, so they do most of their lying in the primaries, when they pretend to be more conservative than they are. For the general election, they return to form and govern from the squishy center, if elected.
And then came Trump.
I understand the desire to see Mamdani win to prove a point, but it really doesn't need more proving. Perhaps New York City's problem is that it has been America's "greatest" city for too long, but it is still sad to see it slide into whatever it is going to become. Unlike previous descents, this one feels permanent. I don't think there is enough of a middle-class or a working-class left to overcome the damage that has been done by the teachers unions.
I'm with Jim. NY deserves to get the government it wants, good and hard. Make Escape From NY a documentary again!
"It doesn't matter what Mamdani intends. His policies will have the result they always do."
Normal people understand this but his supporters are leftists and for them, intentions (or, what they say their intentions are, anyway) are what matter.
@Biff, I'm convinced there is a 2-digit percentage of Republican politicians (local, state, Federal) that are actually Democrats using the guise of the Republican Party to get elected and into office - a sort of fifth column. They tack to the soft right to campaign, then decidedly left-of-center once in office. Dade Phelan, in Texas is a prime example - they keep the Republican brand weak, like having a low-grade fever of discontent amongst the electorate.
@aggie - That could be true!
In other news, Sliwa has left Adams in the dirt, is a mere two points behind Cuomo and four behind Mandami. What's particularly important about this is that as his viability rises, he will likely peel off more reluctant Cuomo voters. And he did all this with virtually no money compared with his opponents. Now terrified business leaders are sitting down with him and writing checks. And even the NYT is publishing stories that question Mamdani's platform, such as the damning op-ed today proving the impossibility of success for government grocery stores.
