"CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump..."

The show sucks. Full stop. For an example Google “The Vax-Scene”.

Mike (MJB Wolf) ayon kay ...

He's not funny and his ratings are shit. But they are dragging out his demise to next MAY. Yikes. His only guest last night was Adam Schiff. Who do they think wants to see that?

tim maguire ayon kay ...

Why, exactly, does America need to know why a low-rated TV show was cancelled? Shows get cancelled all the time for all sorts of reasons.

They wanted to cancel it. That's all the reason anybody is entitled to.

Mike (MJB Wolf) ayon kay ...

Oh yeah, the Vax dancing! A pro-jab musical to lift the spirits. Which was staged just a few months after he spent several nights saying he would not and YOU should not trust the "Trump vaccine." What a nutty flip flop to inflict on your "fans."

Iman ayon kay ...

“His only guest last night was Adam Schiff. Who do they think wants to see that?”

I imagine even Mrs. Schiff recoils at watching that.

Sure, Liz. That's how you silence someone--you keep them on the air and continue to pay them for ANOTHER YEAR after they criticize you.

By the way, Steven--nobody 'bought' CBS's 'dignity' for $16 Million, CBS PAID TRUMP $16 Million. Moron writers.

FormerLawClerk ayon kay ...

CBS edited Kamala interview... not just a little.

It's worse than that: CBS News edited the Kamala interview in such a way as to falsely portray her answers to the questions in a failed attempt to rig our elections. It has done this MANY times before (see Rathergate, which featured CBS News forging Texas Air National Guard memos in a failed attempt to prevent the election of George W. Bush).

CBS's broadcast license was granted to it by the people of the United States in 1934. The people own the electromagnetic spectrum that was gifted to CBS O&Os to operate "in the public interest."

Donald Trump should order his FCC chairman Brenden Carr to revoke these licenses, as CBS is clearly NOT acting in the public interest. Attempting to rig our national elections is not in the public interest.

That broadcast spectrum should then be auctioned off to the highest bidder and the funds returned to the American people.

It’s hard to believe that it was strictly a financial decision in light of Paramount’s capitulation to Trump to gain his approval for the Skydance merger. Colbert speculated on-air that he might be a casualty of Trumpist censorship.

CBS is owned by the Redstone family.

A particularly loathsome bunch of old money Oligarchs who hate the US and have been trying to turn it into Mexico for a long time.

It is nice to see the little Oligarch pet come out and defend the broadcast giant as it falls into ruin and disrepute.

One of Trumps greatest accomplishments was destroying the credibility of the oligarch corporate media.

On the subject of oligarchy, maybe this is the first step in the lefty network cabal just picking one of their number to face off against Gutfeld?

Doesn’t have to be a conscious collaboration in restraint of trade - just market decisions in a very small set of sellers.

That's show biz. I read somewhere that the Big 3 TV networks dropped all their Westerns in the early 1970's bc they didn't attract the demographic they were looking for, even though the show's ratings were still very decent. So the execs made a business decision. Go figure? I wouldn't cry too hard for ol' Steve though. He's not some coal miner or auto-worker who is going to be hurtin' financially. TV viewers will see him again, sadly. But that too is show-biz, right?

FormerLawClerk ayon kay ...

Yes. It was.

Same reason CBS edited the Kamala interview. It was for political reasons.

Same reason Dan Rather forged Texas Air National Guard memos to try to derail the election of George W. Bush. It was for political reasons.

Hey asshole: Now that you know Colbert was cancelled for political reasons, what do you want to do about it?

Spit it out. You want a war? What?

wsw ayon kay ...

Enigma ayon kay ...

Colbert was genuinely funny as a comedian, as he got deeply into character and did not imitate but "became" someone else. He was terrible as a late night host, and his success came only from TDS. With TDS in the rearview mirror, Colbert has nothing to offer.

He simply sucks as a light night host. He does not have the natural ability to be a host, and is just a quirky character actor. Good riddance.

paul ayon kay ...

Guess what Colbert's Viewship in the 18-49 demo? 219 thousand. There are 127 million Americans between 18-49. That means 1 out of 600 Americans under age 50 view Colbert.

Total viewership is 2.4 million. Total Americans 124 million. That means 98 percent of Americans over 50 do NOT - repeat NOT - watch Colbert.

Decent ratings? Not if Advertisers want to sell to people under 50.

tommyesq ayon kay ...

Does it look more like "bribery" or more like "go f**k yourself and your criticisms, Colbert?"

tommyesq ayon kay ...

Ad revenue for late-night network television, including "The Late Show," has significantly declined. In 2018, these shows generated $439 million, but by 2024, that figure dropped to $220 million, a 50% decrease.

Additionally, the production costs for a show like the Late Show are quite high (and don't drop just because ad revenue does) and Colbert makes $21 million per year. Financially, it no longer makes sense to keep Colbert or to replace him with some other high-paid host.

Finally, the show gets its ass routinely kicked by Gutfeld, which has the comedic timing/rhythm of hacky amateur Catskills comedians, has Adam Schiff as the sole guest for a show, and has Bernie Sanders as one of his most frequent guests (23 times, I believe).

tommyesq ayon kay ...

It is good to see the senior Massachusetts senator (you know, the "greatest deliberative body on earth") jump immediately to the conclusion (without evidence, I might add) that the cancellation must be a bribe, and to immediately decide that she should tweet such a out without delay.

Also, notice how Adam Schiff doesn't deny the latest claims against him.

"Schiff and his wife purchased a home in Potomac, Maryland, in 2003 for $870,000, according to the letter. They entered into a Fannie Mae-backed mortgage agreement for $610,000 at a rate of 5.625% over a term of 30 years, asserting the property would be their primary and principal residence.

The letter said they reaffirmed that the Maryland home was their primary residence in mortgage refinancing filings in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, despite Schiff being an elected official representing the state of California at the same time."

Colbert is not a journalist, he's a comedian. He's supposed to be funny and bring in ratings. (But it is pretty weird how so many on the far left actually get their "news" from comedians.)

He just took a big, public dump on his employer and got fired for it. That's hardly surprising.

That Colbert's show was put on the chopping block just a couple of weeks after the BBB bill and one day after the recissions bill was passed does make me wonder how much money was the U.S. government funnelling in one form or another to his show.

Let ol' Steve get a hosting job at MSNBC, or PBS, or start a pod cast. And to the usual suspects at Althouse: Colbert hasn't been "silenced", he's been fired, which happens all the time, especially in show biz and he'll be fine. Olbermann, O'Reilly, Megan Kelly, Tucker, et alia were all fired at some point too and they are still out there unsilenced and all. Pundits that want to be ratings proof should do like Limbaugh did and build out their own set up.

What's the score, though?

No, he had the highest rating among legacy network late night shows. Gutfeld(!) has about 60% more audience than does Colbert, and at significantly less cost.

No one watched the show, it was losing $40 million a year.

Saint Croix ayon kay ...

So, Colbert has 1.9 million total viewers in the latest ratings.

But only 280,000 viewers in the key, 25-54 age demographic. Ouch. That means his audience is very young (possible) and very old (probable).

1.6 million people, who are not buying much.

I don't know who his advertisers are, but 280,000 people in your key demographic? I would pay very little for that.

Jeez Kak, you make it so easy.
There's an old joke (I originally heard it in an Econ class used on General Motors) that went, we lose money on every sale. But we make up for it in volume.
GM was, at the time I first heard the joke, number one in car sales by a bunch.
Now if you don't get the point of that in relationship to Colbert, I can make it plainer. The Colbert show was losing $40 million per year. Late night talk shows have no chance of making any of that in re-runs.
Now for the crayon and puppets version: If your sales don't cover your costs you will go out of business.
