"Biden drops out!"

That was the news exactly one year ago and the title of my blog post on the occasion.

I said: "My longstanding tag — 'biden drops out' — has come true."

Actually, I believed Biden would resign the presidency within a few weeks of his inauguration in 2021, but I didn't use my "biden drops out" tag for that. I didn't begin that tag until January 30, 2024, when the Washington Post published "Biden faces treacherous political choices in answering deadly attack/Republicans demand that Biden attack Iran. Some warn that risks a wider Middle East conflagration" (WaPo).

I found this line deeply disturbing:

"The United States believes Iranian-backed militants were behind the drone strike, and Biden is ramping up a reelection campaign against a leading Republican opponent who boasts of his toughness against Iran, making any option politically perilous as well as militarily fraught."

And I wrote:

Now would be a good time for Biden to deliver a speech modeled on LBJ's 1968 withdrawal speech
"I have concluded that I should not permit the Presidency to become involved in the partisan divisions that are developing in this political year. With America’s sons in the fields far away... I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office–the Presidency of your country. Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President."
In the comments, Leland, noticing the new tag, said "'Biden drops out' tag. That’s placing a marker."

Althouse's premonition was correct, even if premature, and Biden dropping out was not surprising. But what was surprising, even by Dem standards, was his forced abdication and rapid replacement as candidate, in an opaque and unprecedented process, after he had already won primaries. Last gasp of the authoritarian Dem gerontocracy?

Kirk Parker చెప్పారు...

Sebastian, after what they did to Bernie in 2016, why were you surprised?

The intentional damage that Joe Biden did to this country is incalculable. Every time I buy something, I think about that fucking incompetent prick. Increasing the money supply by 20% has generally increased all prices by 20%. That price increase is imbedded into the economy and isn’t going away.

And, of course, there are the dead: All the victims of illegal aliens. And the Nebraska soldier who was killed at Abby Gate.

When this asshole dies - after, I hope, a long and painful period of deep suffering - Trump ought to declare a national day of celebration instead of ordering flags to half staff.

And the fact that this dick is Irish- Catholic, makes me even angrier.

Joe Biden was a worst President in history and there is no close second.

Dave Begley చెప్పారు...

I challenge the Althouse community to name one good thing Biden did for the country as a whole.

At least Jimmy Carter deregulated trucking, airlines and telecom.

Althouse made her mark too.

And when Trump, the Epstein compatriot finally kicks the bucket the US and the entire world will dance in the streets.

The one good four minutes of LBJ.

I dont get upset at Joe Biden, because I know every liberal/left Democrat who've behaved the same way. If Biden had dropped dead in Feb 2021, Kam would've done everything Joe Biden did.

Warren, Pelosi, Schumer, Clinton, Obama, Hillary, Kam, Biden, Kerry, - all peas in a pod.

Well deserved victory lap for our hostess.

I predicted that either President Biden or President Harris would face Trump in the election. I was wrong.

Leland చెప్పారు...

I also thought Biden would make Harris President by leaving early. I guess he was his own man and not a party man. Or judging by Hunter’s comments, they were giving the party a big FU.

Bich has some really hilarious comments on that old thread, all wrong of course.

Yancey Ward చెప్పారు...

And Greg basically nailed it on that thread as the outcome of it all was exactly what he predicted.

I had expected Biden to resign after the 2022 midterms, and I also thought the Democrats would run an actual primary in 2024- both wrong. I think the failed assassination attempt on Trump is what ultimately put the stake through the heart of the Biden re-election compaign.

Is this a serious point you are trying to make, Althouse? That Biden will not finish his term as POTUS?
Let's bet on it. Put your money where your keyboard is. I think it is a stupid claim; but what I want more than anything is for you to just be clear with your readers. Are you really, seriously making the claim that a Biden resignation will be happening soon after his inauguration? If so, when?
Because I am calling bullshit.

And now Hunter reveals that Joe was on Ambien at least part of the time. The known side effects of Ambien are many—including confusion and sleepwalking. It does explain why Biden acted as he did: confused and sleepwalking throughout his Presidency. Too bad his Vice President and Cabinet ignored their duty under the TwentyFifth Amendment.

Ralph L చెప్పారు...

I thought he'd be forced out in 2021, too. I remember Althouse posted in 2019 about a WaPoo? article pushing Harris. She did seem to have some Establishment backing until she hit the national stage. Biden chose well for his job security.
All those staffers she went through, years of Biden's decline, the earpiece, and no tell-all books. Someone knows how to write an ironclad NDA, and the Dem media machine is fierce.

walter చెప్పారు...

I wonder if Ambien caused "Pedo Pete" to be so weird around girls.

Kirk Parker చెప్పారు...

Walter, it wasn't Ambien, he always was that way.

See, there's where he went wrong. You're supposed to go to bed right after you take it, not go out and carry on with your day.

I took Ambien for a while. Gave me bad dreams, so I stopped.

Lazarus చెప్పారు...

It's the nuances that might have been different with another president. Any Democrat would be soft on illegal immigration, but would another have opened the door wide to all comers? The Afghanistan withdrawal was bound to be a mess. Would it have been less of a mess if someone else was in charge? Could it have been better (a president who didn't say "defund the police")? Could it have been worse (a president who didn't change that a year later to "fund the police)? Either Biden was monstrously bad or the whole Democratic party is.

walter చెప్పారు...

I'm kidding, Kirk.

Christopher B చెప్పారు...

Looking back, just from a tactical perspective it made no sense to replace Biden in 2021 unless it was done almost immediately after he took office. Until January 2023, Harris would have been limited by the 22nd Amendment to only serving the remainder of Biden's term and one more if re-elected. After January 2023 she could finish Biden's term and still run for two of her own.

Kirk Parker చెప్పారు...

Lazarus,

> Either Biden was monstrously bad or the whole Democratic party is.

What is the word "OR" doing there?

Yancey Ward చెప్పారు...

Walter, great find on the Chuck quote. It almost makes me wish he were still around rather than suicided after last November.

I have said this here for years. Joe Biden is stupid, empty, and vicious. On his best day he was a bad man.

Bruce Hayden చెప్పారు...

“I also thought Biden would make Harris President by leaving early. I guess he was his own man and not a party man. Or judging by Hunter’s comments, they were giving the party a big FU.”

My guess at what was going on was that Biden’s handlers were allowing and facilitating top Dems looting the federal treasury, at an unprecedented level. Hundreds of $billions$ going to their NGOs, etc. if there was a pot of money anywhere in the Executive Branch under Presidential control, it was redirected to some Dem “worthIes” like perpetual loser Stacey Abrams picking up almost a $billion” for her do-nothing NGO.

Besides, the weakness of that Amendment is that the Cabinet owes their loyalty to the White House. They can be replaced at the stroke of an Autopen by someone more loyal to the WH. They were assumed to have Honor anyway. But very few, if any actually did. And wouldn’t, since they owed their Cabinet post to the Biden WH cabal, which favored venality and loyalty over competence.

Then there was Kamala, not smart enough or connected enough to understand how it all worked. Or smart enough to get elected. Making things worse, if she did ascend to the Presidency, they would lose control of the Senate until her replacement as VP could be confirmed by the Senate, the Dems no longer controlled (because they controlled the Senate with her tie breaking vote as VP).

Howard చెప్పారు...

What's amazing is that it took so long to shitcan Dim Joe. Obviously the DNC Davos Star Chamber power structure was very reluctant to have Kamala Harris take over as the front man.

Tina Trent చెప్పారు...

Nail on the head, Bruce Hayden.
