"The Trump administration has abruptly shifted the focus of its mass deportation campaign, telling Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to largely pause raids and arrests in the agricultural industry, hotels and restaurants..."

"... according to an internal email and three U.S. officials with knowledge of the guidance.... The new guidance comes after protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s immigration raids, including at farms and businesses.... On Thursday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that the crackdown might be alienating industries he wanted to keep on his side. 'Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,' he said on social media.... Mr. Trump has for decades owned luxury hotels, an industry with a strong immigrant labor force.... The guidance did not appear to rule out raids at work sites in other industries, like the one at a garment factory in Los Angeles that sparked the protests...."

From "Trump Shifts Deportation Focus, Pausing Raids on Farms, Hotels and Eateries/The abrupt pivot on an issue at the heart of Mr. Trump’s presidency suggested his broad immigration crackdown was hurting industries and constituencies he does not want to lose" (NYT).

We need a guest worker program. The Democrats don't want that, because it interferes with their project of demographic engineering. Australia used to be pretty conservative, remember Howard? Until they managed to import enough ethnic Chinese to tilt elections in the globalist direction. It's the model.

john mosby చెప్పారు...

We don't need a guest worker program, we need an American worker program. Yes, if you have to hire Americans to pick your lettuce, you have to pay them more, and then the price of the Big Mac goes up. But guess what else happens? You have a farm community full of decently-paid Americans instead of literal peons. Everyone's standard of living goes up.

But can you do that in the middle of one season? No. So it makes sense for Trump to avoid cutting our noses off to spite our faces.

But he really should come out with a fully participated at policy that explains the end state he wants and how he's going to get there.

Same with construction, where he should definitely know whereof he speaks.

Hospitality? Screw it. Throughout Covid, they cleaned roo.s once a week. If we could do that for an imaginary health threat, we can do it for a threat to our economic equity.

Not possible. He responds to the situation as it develops. His goal is no illegal immigration. But he can’t tell you exactly how we get there, because he can’t foretell the future.

"Why would illegal immigrant workers self-deport when they can stick around and get Trump's new "good, long time worker" amnesty from their employers (at least if they work in hotels or on farms, as if the program will stay confined to those industries)"

"So Trump is not just protecting workers who've been with an employer "for 20, 25 years. He exempting entire huge industries -- agriculture, hotels, restaurants."

"Restaurants are now sanctuaries, ICE-free zones! They'll get away with paying less than they do now because every illegal will want to work there."

"Does Trump have a plan to wean farms, hotels and restaurants off of illegal labor, or are they now home-free zones in perpetuity?"

"The cartels now have a new story to tell their clients--get into the US and you can work in a restaurant or hotel and they won't touch you! Expect a new surge of arrivals at the border. Maybe Trump will notice that he's eroded what so far is his biggest accomplishment"

"By definition, every industry that employs a lot of illegals is going to be faced with loss of workers if there are mass deportations. Garment industry? Check. Construction? Check. Horse racing and breeding? Check. Hard to see why they won't be excluded too. What's left?"

"800,000 illegals got Obama's DACA amnesty. This new Trump amnesty would be way bigger than that ...."

GOP controls Congress. Seems like a guest worker program should be easy to pass.

I am sure all those GOPers are eager to put their signature at the bottom of such a bill. Like that will ever happen now that you have demonized these people as a literal invading army that must be fully deported.

Now you want foreign working age men? Good luck getting that genie back in the bottle. I am sure folks like Achilles will happily stop spouting the extreme views you encouraged them to have lolol.

The problem is the law. Change the law to serve America's needs.
Make it so non-citizens are not counted for purposes of House seats.
Illegal immigration is an engineered crisis.
There's no reason we can't expand the guest worker program for some industries so people can come here legally. This would include requiring the industries who bring in guest workers to provide medical insurance for them while they're here. And maybe even housing.
There could be limits on how many years or seasons a guest worker can participate in the program. If the industry wants to keep these workers for a long time they can help them become citizens. A track for this purpose could be legislated.
Phase out the right of illegals to participate in the program.
These are just a few things off the top of my head.
Dems and many Republicans and their donors don't want to solve the immigration crisis. That's the reason we have one.
Trump should pressure them, not just cave. Put pressure on the industries to put pressure on their congresspersons and Senators to solve these issues with legal reforms by continuing to deport illegals.
Deport all illegals who came in after 2020.
Eliminate birthright citizenship.

The sheer numbers of people in the country illegally post-Biden meant that, invariably, the deportation process would require prioritization. In addition to criminals, those on the dole should be the deportation priority.

The concentration of productive people in certain workplaces, however, creates an ICE enforcement incentive based on yield per enforcement action that moves them up the priority list by default.

Of course, the NYT wants to play-up the TACO theme, because reporting that Trump is capable of rationally pivoting priorities in a way that undercuts his opposition is the last thing they want to admit.

No matter how much deportation Trump accomplishes, when he's gone, the problems that created the crisis, that allowed some actors to create the crisis, will still be there if we don't address them. Trump has a chance to do that. Deportation isn't enough on its own.
If we want a long term solution we need leadership and a legislative agenda that everyone can understand and that Americans can get behind and put pressure on their representatives to pass.

For years prior to Biden-Soros illegal border entrants.

MartyH చెప్పారు...

My solution would align the incentives to eject the criminals, ensure a pool of labor with preferential hiring for US citizens, and heavy punishment for non-compliance:

Continue border enforcement as we are doing now.

Large but capped (10 million?) guest worker program with 50% tax on all non-citizen labor and $1000 per incident per day fines.

Personal liability for not complying with ICE detainers. Judge, sheriff, councilmember, governor are personally responsible for the subsequent actions of people not handed over to ICE if their actions result in actionable events.

Non citizen felons serve a max term for any crime committed, then are deported. Re-entering felons win a lifetime ticket to CECOT.

Illegal immigrants who came her as adults are not eligible for citizenship. Their children, born here or not, must go through the naturalization process to become citizens.

Congress is apportioned based on citizen populations.

MountainMan చెప్పారు...

There is already a temporary work visa program for agriculture. It is the H-2A visa. Probably 350,000 or so of these are used by US farms every year. Most of the workers come from Mexico. Many farmers and workers have used these for years. The problem is farms using illegal aliens and not following the visa process because of its strict requirements, worker protections, and higher costs. Workers and farms need to use the legal visa process or the workers need to be deported.

There is also a temporary work visa for non-agricultural workers, the H-2B. These are mainly used in the hospitality industry, especially in the summer travel months. Again, employers and workers need to follow the law and not work outside the visa process. I had a nice discussion with one of these visa workers several years ago at a restaurant in Pigeon Forge. She was a university student from Poland who was on her second summer of work as a waitress during the busy tourist season. She liked the program as it had helped her learn a lot about the US, significantly improved her English, and made her some decent money. I also follow a young Russian man on YouTube who also spent a few years working in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge in the summer.

If you want a good view into the real world of H-2A visas you can watch this video from Peter Santenello on YouTube, who is visiting with a crawfish farmer in southern Lousiana.
