That's a 4th of July picture. The kids are already in their suits, the dock is about to get splashed, the potato salad is being made, the hot dogs thawed. The box of fireworks awaits, like an evening Christmas present. I make my run this week, to capture the discounts when the Big Boom store opens up.
I know that Meade accused me of being a mandatory masker, so I am just going to leave this comment I made right here. I have already addressed the "mandatory vaxer" thing, but here is me on masks.
"Nevertheless, as I have been saying forever, there has never been any evidence that kids spread COVID very much at all, and for a long time, there has been good evidence that they don't, so masking them at all is stupid, and to some degree, cruel. Besides, at this stage, where COVID is never going away, people need to be periodically exposed so that their immunity doesn't fade too much, or when they do get it, it might be a doozy of a case, so the mask thing is moot anyway.
1/28/22, 12:35 PM"
I am also the guy who compared the mandatory mask thing to that scene from William Tell where the reason he was made to shoot the apple off of his son's head was that he refused to bow his head to a piece of cloth that the viceroy had ordered flown on a pole in the village square.
But go ahead, if you got nothing against my arguments, which I am generally careful to lay out, so that you can pick them apart, if able, make stuff up. I think that this also addresses the mandatory school closing issue. I never supported that, and instead, and I can't find the comment because Google isn't all powerful, but I said that if elderly teachers can't take the risk, they should retire. That even before Omicron, the young and healthy were not at great risk, and children especially not.
Great conversation on the street as I walked to the diner on this beautiful summer day. Black guy in t-shirt and shorts, towel over his head, sweating profusely: “Hey how you doing today?” Me: “Beautiful day. Having a great time. How about you?” Black guy: “Great. And I gotta give you chops for being slim and fit.” I’m dressed in a very nice Shephard’s t-shirt and cargo pants. Yeah, I’m showing off my physique, crafted on yoga, bicycling, janitoring, Keto and calorie counting. Me: “I know what you mean. Not much of that around anymore, huh?” Black guy: “And you look like you got a few years on me. I’m 67.” Me: “Yeah, and I’m 75.” Black guy: “Yeah, you look like you’re ready to enlist in the Marines.” I told you it was a great conversation.
One of the doves that visit us every morning was unable to fly off this morning. It's partner day on the roofs edge calling it but to no avail. We collected it and drove over to a St Augustine wildlife rescue organization - The Ark. No broken wing but in need of rehabilitation and a closer look see as to any problems . This evening it's mate was still looking for it. We've asked the Ark if we may have it back to return to its heartbroken mate. We'll know more by tomorrow. Wish us all luck.
“I know that Meade accused me of being a mandatory masker, so I am just going to leave this comment I made right here. I have already addressed the "mandatory vaxer" thing, but here is me on masks.”
I recall in the early days of Covid when Althouse used to wash her shoes after a walk outside and how irritated she was when a walker didn’t maintain the distance between her and him on the path as she wanted to get past him. I recall that both Meade and Althouse got the Covid shots even before I did. Meade must’ve forgotten.
Heartless, having recently attempted to (I'll never know the outcome) save a baby mockingbird from certain death, I wish you every good fortune in reuniting a pair of doves after a health-induced separation!
To Dave B. BTW. The older we get, the more people look familiar…!. So I started the day with this from The Atlantic: “The United States is currently ruled by anti-liberal forces trying to overturn the Founders’ universalist liberal ideals and replace them with a white, Christian ethnoreligious national identity”. I’ve been thinking about that all day and have no idea what it means.
I'm grateful for those of you taking the time and care to help damaged birds. This is one of those nights I'm sitting here wishing we were all better at helping damaged humans.
“If we elect Trump, we will be at war within 6 months.” - Kamala Harris (9/10/2024) See wrong again its only been 5 months. It means the "The Atlantic" hates white Christians. Go ask Jeffrey Goldberg for further explaination.
The Dems want to make ICE vulnerable by making them uncover their face. That would help Tren De Aragua target ICE agents. What side are these people on?
Douger: " anti-liberal forces trying to overturn the Founders’ universalist liberal ideals and replace them with a white, Christian ethnoreligious national identity”
I thought the Founders were the bad guys who imposed a white Christian identity on these lands? So confusing.
I have been at war for months with several pairs of house finches trying to make nests on the overhead light fixtures on the back porch. They make a lot of noise and a huge mess. I tear the nests down and throw them out. Even though I have surrounded the lights with wire mesh they keep at it. No sympathy for the doves.
@boatbuilder: We fight that battle every year with robins. Mouse traps set on top of the light fixtures is one weapon we use to some effect. Unfortunately, it only keeps them away for a few hours, and when we're not home to reset them, well…
Can I just say how much I'm enjoying this heat! Nothing better than a walk with my dog on a warm June morning. This is a hill I will die on, all you cold weather lovers!!
I'm also looking forward to thunder incoming later today. Don't let me down!
Pro tip. There are only a few reasons why your AC coil ices up. One you're low on freon and if you're low on freon you have a leak somewhere. Secondly. The blower motor is weak. It's not moving enough air to keep the coil ice free. Lastly. The vents in your house are covered up and not allowing enough air flow.
The previous few days here in far northern Calif. (Siskiyou County) have exhibited highs of 63°, 63°, 70° F. I took a walk yesterday up on one of the old pioneer aqueducts ringing our mountain (which are just like narrow, much washed-out, constant-elevation roads these days) with our dog, Dallia. It was perfect.
The small morning doves are a delight. My big grey hawk that lives in my live oaks feeds on them and anything else it can let ft off with. Had a bunny rabbit head dropped next to me like some ersatz Godfather scene gone bad. I looked to see the hawk looking back down. Mrs Heartless says it's like a cat bringing you a mouse
I do a half hour walk during lunch around the neighborhood. For some reason, the cicadas like to come up and land on my torso. Usually, I can just shake them off.
Most of the cicadas are gone but a few are left. I was wearing my t-shirt with the Sicilian trinacria on it when a cicada came up and landed about where Sciacca is on the southern coast. She was facing up at me, and we stared at each other for a few minutes. I shrugged and kept walking.
I noticed there were a lot of birds flying around, maybe looking for a last cicada meal. After about 15 minutes and after we left the birds behind, the cicada - which had slowly climbed her way up to Palermo - then suddenly took off to fly around America. There is a double meaning in there somewhere.
@Rocco, do you have the Cicada Killer Wasps there? They're freakin' huge, and look quite similar to murder hornets, which is what I thought they were when I first saw one. They dig holes in the earth about 1" in diameter, and then go capture a cicada and bring it back into their hole, to eat it. I had seen the holes, walking in the woods many times, but never knew what was making them, until I identified the hornet.
I poured 2 gals of generator gas cans into the car, one gallon into the generator, and bought new gas for the 3 gas cans. Keeps the gas from getting old. I found the way to deal with modern gas cans is don't use the spout at all. Get a $36 Flexall funnel with attached hose, the big one, and pour everything into the funnel. It's long enough to allow you to invert gas cans to empty them.
@Aggie - Here in the Cincinnati area we are right in the middle of the range of the Cicada Killer Wasps, but I haven’t knowingly seen any. I was just looking at all of the holes near my trees, but they all seemed to be smaller cicada holes and not the bigger ones you described.
I did read a pair of articles from Louisville and Lexington, KY (about 2 hours south of here) and they said that we could expect to see the CKWs start to come out soon, as they usually come out there in July and August. They would feed on the annual cicadas which come there a little later. What we have is Brood XIV finishing up.
Side note: When starting to type “cicada”, my iPad kept wanting to correct it to “cicada Soros” for some reason.

Watched the movie, “Trance” directed by Danny Boyle. The male lead, Jim McEvoy, looks like the President of Creighton.
I miss Meade's dog pics from years ago.

A lot of uncertainty in the early days. Not so much now.
I think the real tragedy of Covid was that the medical establishment threw their credibility in the trash.
Oh, and millions dead.
I ran into an old girlfriend today. She called me honey, and I liked it.
Upon reflection, she may have forgotten my name..
Outstanding, Shouting Thomas @7:44PM! That’s quite a compliment.
Say… how ‘bout them Iraqis.
Yeah well, looking 10 years younger on the outside, never protected someone from dying at 75 from disease. Lots of good looking corpses at the morgue.
Love those dock pictures. I always wish I was there and had a boat.
As usual ST, has a "special relationship" with Black Folks. What that "Crack"?

Ann Althouse sez “Talk about whatever you like in the comments EXCEPT Iran. Go one post down for that.”
DINKY DAU sez …
So was Dinky educated at an Ivy League school?
First power outage of summer at 14 minutes past midnight. They're evaluating it, according to the power company website.
The Dems want to make ICE vulnerable by making them uncover their face. That would help Tren De Aragua target ICE agents. What side are these people on?
Will do a Dove update in the Professor's Cafes as they become available.
If the power company is going to get power up by 04:30 as promised, they're going to have to get a truck out here pretty quick. 8 minutes.
Simple fix, a blown fuse on the wire leading to the neighborhood. Complication if it blows after replacement. Then they have to troubleshoot.
When t blows, there's a really loud bang, so there's that treat at least.
"We're sorry. We are currently unable to provide an estimate of restoration for your outage. Please check back later."

I should add 3 or 4 encounters with the mouse trap discourages them for days, but they eventually retry the site.
Robins build multiple nests, so if you can get past the actual egg-laying, you're good.

Ugh. The last 2 days have been unpleasant even in Vilas County.
90 degrees already (10 am) in the Maryland suburbs of DC. So glad I went out at 6:45 to wash and wax my car.
