"'I thought it was a great photo opportunity.' But the shutter-worthy sight quickly turned tragic when one of the bison stepped into a small part of the basin..."

"... then tried hopping out. Within a matter of seconds, the beast began teetering at the edge of the Grand Prismatic Spring — the largest hot spring in the entire park — and then fell in."

While on a trip to Denali NP, a park ranger told us about his experience driving the shuttle bus that runs through the park.

A moose had wandered onto a frozen pond, and couldn't get it's footing on the ice. A grizzly bear took the opportunity to attack. Several tourists were shocked by the brutality and asked the ranger to do something to help the moose. He wondered why they bothered coming to Alaska.

From the NYP comments: "Nothing in nature dies peacefully surrounded by loved ones."

The hiker dad will be blaming himself. He had plenty of warning and it sounds like there were people around who were willing to help.

Are we sure this isn't the the tourist fault - photo nazi?

My opinion of tourists in our national parks is low.

Altitude sickness is very serious -and if it's combined with dehydration.. yikes.

"I'm boiling a roast... How hot and wet do you like it?"

Those pictures were horrifying. I'm glad I didn't need to see it live. My spouse and I are laughing at the official who says the Bison didn't suffer. Yeah right

That bison got himself in quite a stew, no?

Nature can be brutal in tooth and claw. Idiot humans seem to forget that .

That bison, if he needs me to carry him out of a boiling spring, well he got himself in the wrong place. Lesbian Los Angeles Fire Chief.

In my imagination I see the 14 year old dancing in the clouds with Kermit and the snow men.

The boy who walked off the cliff is not dead: "Zane Wach is now in a medically induced coma from the fall on Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada mountain range on June 10 that left him with severe head trauma, as well as a broken ankle, finger and pelvis....."

I hope the kid makes it. Altitude sickness is nothing to screw around with and I’m sure the father is kicking himself that he didn’t take the advice of the other climbers and use search & rescue to get his boy off the mountain. With his son acting erratically why didn’t the dad rope the two of them together?

john mosby చెప్పారు...

The father and son encountered another group, who ‘helped’ by calling SAR. Why didn’t they help by escorting the kid down? Could have surrounded him, or constructed a litter to carry him, or as another commenter said, roped up.

Buffalo are taking selfies?

Park rangers, confiscate their phones.

Rabel చెప్పారు...

The water in the hot spring is below boiling point, so technically Mr. Buffalo was poached.

It's worse than that. After Yogi, all the young bears think they're influencers.

I lived in Colorado Springs for 27 years. The elevation there is over 6,000 feet MSL. Just about every year, some family members attending the Air Force Academy graduation end up in the hospital due to altitude sickness. There were also fatalities, including a second year cadet 15-20 years ago. There are trained observers who check everyone who arrives at the top of Pikes Peak (elevation 14,110 feet) for altitude sickness. It’s no joke.

The trash bins at parks like Yellowstone are Bear resistant.
But the bears keep breaking in.
The rangers say that unfortunately there is considerably overlap in the intelligence levels of the bears and the tourists .

Years ago, I read a quote attributed to a Yosemite park ranger, possibly apocryphal:

"There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."

Note to people planning to hike Mt Whitney or any comparable challenge. Be thoughtful about your preparation and monitor blood oxygen. I was in excellent condition in 1978 and experienced hypoxia near the summit. A 30 minute rest solved the problem for me. Just good luck that it all worked out. My hiking mate experienced hypoxia on the way down. We were lucky, given our impulsive decision to climb it in one day.
