Zuckerberg invites you into a room with 15 A.I. friends.

I remember when Zuckerberg wanted real people to interact in a virtual space called Metaverse. But people didn't want to go there. The rooms were empty. But 4 years later, what Z is talking about sounds like the solution to the core problem with Metaverse. The rooms are full of interesting people — all there ready to talk to you and full of interesting stories and knowledge all framed around your preferences and tuned to your mood.

Makes me think of the old Dylan lyric: "Oh my God, am I here all alone?"

Nothing more depressing than being in a room with a bunch of AI talking to each other and not to you, because you are uninteresting.

Could be like a late stage Althouse thread were the trolls and bots spam each other.

Yah, what Leland said 🤪…Chat GPS or whatever it is… we fed it some images and it came up with half a dozen bullet points on why a real Rolex is a fake. It claimed it was 99 percent certain, too. With friends like that…

Zuckerberg is working his next business venture, wearing his nerd glasses, the ones that record everything and project onto the lenses, so he can see your galvanic skin response and pulse rate while he probes. The guy is a shape-shifting alien, apparently wanting to Zelig his way through billionaire-dom. I find it very difficult to relate to anything he's selling, knowing that one of his shapes is the one agreeing to comply with censorship demands, agreeing to de-rate and ghost account holders without their awareness it was happening.

Or the old Human League lyric: "Everybody needs two or three friends."

"Nothing more depressing than being in a room with a bunch of AI talking to each other and not to you, because you are uninteresting."

No, these will be YOUR friends, completely interested in you, the way AI already is. They'll only talk with each other to create a sense that you are entering an exciting party, but unlike a real party, you will be instantly and easily included, even if you are shy, even if you are socially awkward. They will adapt to you and give you what you need.

This is an inhumane turn. We are not robots. Shut.It.Down.

Would you refer to your AI friends as "my friends" to IRL friends and family? Parents, "How are you doing with your new friends? Do you do anything interesting? Go anywhere?"

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

"Would you refer to your AI friends as "my friends" to IRL friends and family?"

You should listen to the new episode of Tim Dillon's podcast. He addresses this issue:

"I would guess that over time, yeah, we will find the vocabulary as a society to be able to articulate why that is valuable and why the people who are doing these things are like, why they're rational for doing it and like, and how it is adding value for their, for their lives.... So basically what [Zuckerberg is] saying is that there's a little stigma right now to probably having an AI girlfriend or friends, but that in time we're gonna come up with the vocabulary to justify why those things are valuable. Now, I wanna unpack this a little bit because this is where we're going. There's no doubt about it. There's no doubt about it. There's absolutely not a question as to what these people want. They do not want you to be a human being. They do not want you to have human connections...."

Your plastic pals who are fun to be with.

Give me some evidence that Zuck groks 'friend' and maybe I'll watch it.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

Grok told me to refer to it as Grok, my AI buddy. Which I do.

Indigo Red ayon kay ...

Zuck projecting his longing for friends and need to fill the silence onto me is offensive. I have fewer than 3 friends and I think that's to many. Fake friends hold no more appeal than real.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

My saddest conversation with Grok was asking my AI buddy if I could have Grok write a book for me with me claiming complete credit for it and publishing it under my name only. Grok’s response: “sure” (I was trying to find out what the legal ramifications were for using Grok generated material for profit.)

Most people don't have a lot of energy for talking to entities unless they can imagine having a chance at romancing them. That's why I'm here, you little hotties.

I just haven't seen AI able to discuss stuff. It can inform and this culture requires a lot of work to keep up with. And maybe I'd like 5 people up on all different aspects of what's going on to quickly inform me as newspapers used to do. But then, could I take it all in? or would it be that firehose effect that I work to escape?
And wouldn't I disagree with anyone shaped by the social sciences rather than the humanities or religion? Even if they appeared to agree with me? Wouldn't there be a sort of dull clunk, not a silver ringing note in their conversation?
And then, will there be another prolifer in the room? I know plenty of prolifers and I've never seen them depicted in the media as they are. So how could AI learn about them to make an avatar that I, a real prolifer could converse with?
Or even a real Trump voter?
Now I'm getting curious - I feel I'd like to see what they come up with in my room of requirements.

Thank you VERY much for that clip, which I'd never seen. He does that thing of playing with the syllables' sounds to the max - like an incantation.

Unlike Anthropogenic Intelligence, Automated Intelligence is neither discerning nor creative, but rarher a large-scale Viterbi decoder with semantic primitives to interface with the carbon natives.

Spike Jonze's move "Her" is a really fascinating look at what a romantic human/AI relationship might be like, although I suspect it's metaphorically addressing more universal phenomena. In the movie, the AI certainly seems to be a more "traditional" type of AI. More obviously conscious. Of course, if you didn't know that the current LLM AI's are constructed the way they are, could you tell the difference?

I immediately thought of that when I read Ann’s comment above. The comment she corrected all went over her head…

"asking my AI buddy if I could have Grok write a book for me with me claiming complete credit for it and publishing it under my name only."

I was thinking about that the other day and wouldn't that be what ghost writing has always been? As long as you are providing the prompts.

I don't want stuff curated to my needs and previous interests unless I specifically ask for it, as when searching for a product or a solution to a problem. I have this problem now on social media. I get nothing but more of the same, when I want novelty, new ideas, new subject matter, things I've never seen, stuff I never knew existed. Give me an AI room where I not only get to present my own ideas and thoughts, but get taught new ideas and information I did not know already.
