ADDED: "The cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church elected Robert Francis Prevost as their 267th pontiff on Thursday, ending a two-day conclave in Rome with the election of the first pope from the United States" (NYT).
AND: Some background from the National Catholic Reporter, published last week: here. Excerpt: "He is a polyglot who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese and can read Latin and German, giving him abilities to communicate with his fellow cardinals in ways that others cannot. The language ability, his international travel experience as head of his religious order, and his work in identifying Latin-rite bishops around the world mean that he will be among the best-known candidates going into this conclave. While fluent in languages, he is not garrulous. When he speaks, he does so with caution and great deliberation. A private man with a reserved style, he will not score high on the charm offensive. But his steely determination and clarity might comfort those looking for a leader who knows where he wants to go and how to get there."

I was hoping it would last 1,000 days. Just for fun.
Curious to see if the church wishes to remain relevant in a post globalist regime world.
Boring. Now, a new antipope would be cool— we haven’t had one of those for 500 years.
Vatican goes MAGA.
…waiting to hear if he’s Pope Woke II. You’ll be able to tell when CNN switches to Trump hate…
Now, a new antipope would be cool— we haven’t had one of those for 500 years.
I have heard argument that we just had one.
My instinct says this new pope is a rejection of the last pope.
Yet, what if this Francis is woker than the last Francis?
young…gonna be around a while…
Well, he's from Chicago, so the fix is in.....
It would have been awesome if he'd chosen "Donald" as his papal name.
Is he trans? Cause on TV the new pope is trans. It's more important the new pope is trans even than that he's Catholic...on TV. It might be different in real life. I don't know. But hear me out, we've had countless Catholic popes and people are still going to hell in droves so maybe it's time we tried a trans pope. I say "we" but full disclosure, I'm not Catholic...or trans, so I'm pretty objective on this. Maybe a trans pope could turn in some better numbers. There's only one way to find out, right?
2nd Pope from a religious order after decades of not. GOD WILLS IT! May he be guided by Jesus Christ and continue on in Francis humble life reaching out and doing the work Of the Gospel. This man will be able to fly everywhere and speak to many different dialects cool! Leo .named after Father of Social Justice, Yeah man..I ripped my two tickets up(just like DERBY) on WHITE SMOKE tomorrow and TAGLES FOR THE win. 1ST time American pretty cool! May he follow in the STEPS of CHRIST the real LEADER OF that organizations Church. PAX sit cum eo! Et cum spiri tu tuo.... A recovering Catholic loves Gods choice, may he walk in Jesus shoes as Francis tried to..
Why do popes pick a new pope-name?
I keep seeing articles stating that increasing numbers of young, conservative men are returning to the church. But, they are flocking to Catholic churches that practice Latin Rite masses or to Eastern Orthodox churches.
Strange
Seems like a Rebuilder/reuniter candidate, so he has his work cut out for him.
Here's some information about him:

ron, it's the "How often do you think about the Roman empire" thing. I wouldn't be surprised it's not an effect from the podcasting world.

No more Pope Joans! There used to be a whole ceremony to check that the pope had testicles precisely to ensure they didn't accidentally elect a woman pope again!
I'm going to wait for the Rogan interview before I decide if he's the right man for job. I can't believe the Conclave didn't do the same.
A FIB Pope! He has work to do.

The "Strange" part was supposed to be sarcasm. They strangely fail to attend liberal churches that berate them for being them.

They already have, somewhat. They're amazed that an American was selected because Trump and, oh yeah, America sucks!
The new pope is just another open borders for thee type. His tweets, as posted on X, show him critical of Trump for his policies on illegals. and he wants Trump to spend time on the "climate crisis"
as said above, new converts tend to be very conservative, Latin Mass, and anti abortion. As usual, the leaders of the church are out of touch with many of the faithful.
Bob Boyd: Indeed, the new Pope is capable of trans substantiation.
If they haven’t elected Trump, that’ll be such a missed opportunity to shift an underperforming employee horizontally.

Interesting that he took the name Leo.
He's supposed to have Peruvian citizenship*. I don't know if it's that plus USA citizenship. (Dual citizenship being anathema to many here.)
Either way, the RCC is welcome to him.
*Reported by FOX and/or NBC. I was switching back and forth.
This man is said to be a capable administrator, of moderate theological tendencies, with a gift for languages. His mother was Spanish and he has dual citizenship in Peru, where he has spent most of his career. Let's hope he is rightly guided and not another Red Pope like Bergoglio.
MadisonMan: "A FIB Pope!"
A simple heart ablation procedure can clear that right up.
From what I understand, there are now more church-going Catholics in England than Anglicans. Ditto in Germany with Lutherans. The Pope has got the last laugh on Henry VIII and Luther.....There's something to be said for Catholicism and its stodginess. The priestly vestments were what well dressed estate owners wore in the the fourth century. We're temporal beings who live in a fluxed up world. It's a comfort to say prayers that have endured for centuries and to pretend there's a still point at the center of the whirligig.....I'm no longer a Catholic, but I wish him well and I hope the Church endures longer than Original Sin.
"Has spent most of his life outside the the United States."
He comes from the most corrupt and crime-ridden City in the entire country due to half a century of leftist democrat oligarchal control. ; it is no surprise he wouldn't want to be anywhere near it.
Perhaps he can be the next Moses, since many many others have followed suit over the last 18 years in a mass exodus that has caused Illinois a population loss greater than anywhere else in the USA.
I think he should go as Pope Bob.
"A simple heart ablation procedure can clear that right up."
Those procedures are far from simple. I hope I never need one.
Not good for Catholicism if the NYT isn't condemning him in some way.

So there is some dispute over the legitimacy of the election of Francis?
Now, if you want to call Francis a Gnostic Pope, I think there’s more “there” there. Still disagree with that one, too.
It only took 2 days?
And he's from Chicago?
Sounds like the fix was in.

I will take an underperformer over a guy who was actively trying to start WW3. If you are unhappy with him, don't vote for him next time he runs.
It's no coincidence that the same people who consistently lie to us about Trump are the ones pushing the world war he is trying to avert.
I'm moderately surprised. I see news articles which say he was a possibility, somehow he wasn't on my mental radar at all. One article says Pope Francis groomed Prevost to be his heir. I had very mixed opinions of Francis and hope His Holiness Leo XIV will be what the Catholic Church needs after the decade of confusion she experienced during Francis's pontificate.
He despises Trump and Vance. He's open borders and has a sex scandal. The literally worse leftist Jesuit online is besides himself with joy.
But he likes money.
I speak as a loyal Catholic. We may criticize the political and human aspects of our Pope, but not his spiritual stature. That is a bright line. Let's hope his Augustine background reigns him in. But he was one of the small number of Augustines who volunteered to go to South America during the Liberation Theology years. That bodes poorly. However, if the Cardinals think they have pulled something symbolic over Trump by clearly choosing this leftist Chicago native (I barely think of Chicago as part of America anymore, and definitely not their deeply corrupt Church), they have another thing coming.
Everything about him screams Pope Francis part II, including open borders fantaticism and blathering about the liberal/leftwing social issue of the day. Born in USA, but spent most of his time in Rome and South America.
Narr, he is a member of the American Counsel of Cardinals. But he is a red.
Has the ADL weighed in? Is he good for the Jews?

Nice.
My reading indicates that the Pope Joan story was mostly unknown prior to the Reformation, and was widely used to lampoon the papacy. There is little evidence that it was other than a medieval folk tale, made use of by later anti-Catholic polemicists.
"... they have another thing coming." Of course, it's " they have a another THINK coming."
What a joyous day to be a graduate of Villanova University.
Does this mean the Cubs are going to play the white Sox in the World Series?
A commentator on EWTN connected Pope Leo XIV to Leo XIII who composed the prayer to the Archangel Michael. Today is also the feast day of the apparition of St. Michael. I hope that our new pope chose his name with that powerful prayer in mind. It is certainly an appropriate prayer for this troubled society.

A question the conclave ignores.)
Administrative skills are important, no doubt, but can Leo reduce the number of hell-bound souls? That's where the rubber meets the road. Does the Vatican even track that metric? Where's a pope's incentive to improve performance? They never get fired, never get demoted no matter how bad they screw up...maybe the Church should offer some kind of bonus structure. Maybe Leo should have to email Elon Musk every Friday and tell him what he got done this week.
Why do popes pick a new pope-name?
A tradition that harkens back to when Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, which was also a play on words in Greek (petra), and declared "Upon this rock I will build my church."

ZZ TOP Jesus just left Chicago.... my goodness the trumpers up in here will be losing their minds, this fella already had called out Vance and Trump,, another DEI leader right, just like Jesus you know INCLUSION welcome and minister to the marginalized groups in society ,the poor the sick women, tax collectors and Samaritans, EQUITY AND JUSTICE..fairness and justice for poor and oppressed and the vulnerable, those who dont have the power and of course Diversity As Gods own creations..as God has made man.Of course Christs teaching align with underlying values of all individuals, though DEI is a modern day "catch ideal" it definitely has roots in the teachings of Christ.. But cmon man calling out trump and Vance thats got to be bad right?..An American Pope whose diversity is amazing and follows in the footsteps of Francis,,maybe there is hope for this world, Bless you LEO do your thing, youl'll take the bashing but so did Christ ,a refreshing scenario that probably wasalready in the making.. The 2nd Pope to come from a religious order following Francis in forever, imagine that..
Leo the lion to lead the Catholic pride parade. Amen.
He comes from Dolton, the most unfortunate corrupt DEI suburb of the now most unfortunate corrupt DEI city. Google "Mayor Tiffany Henyard" ignore her Wikipedia puff piece and focus on the corruption articles. We're on FBI speed dial.
The guy's a Cub's fan; what more is there to say? At least he appears to have no brush with the Father Pfleger crowd, at first glance. On the other hand, they are close in age and were raised geographically close. He left before Pfleger gained dominance in politics, but not before he gained prominence in Church politics.
"A tradition that harkens back to when Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter"
Thanks, Mike.
I demand that Illegal immigrants be allowed to camp out inside the Vatican. At Vatican expense.
The "least American of the Americans", that's how the Italian press have described Robert Cardinal Provost. He has chosen to be call Pope Leo XIV... not a very auspicious name in my opinion. Leo I is known as the pontiff who saved Rome from Attila. How he did that isn't known. The Catholic faithful are asked to believe the Hunnish leader was impressed with Leo courage or something more ridiculous. Those whose minds are less inclined to enjoy a story that ends with a god being lowered onstage via cables and pulleys think an epidemic in southern Italy dissuaded the Huns from sacking Rome, a city already pretty well sacked-up to go by Alaric and his Visigoths. At any rate, Leo didn't save the Po valley, Gaul, or Dacia from barbarian rapine, so his miracle was a minor one.
Another famous Leo was the Tenth of that Name, Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, who was probably the second richest man in Italy and the third richest in Europe after Charles V. He's know for selling indulgences and burning anyone who pointed out the swindle.
The new Leo is not going to be friendly to Europe's growing anger against the Islamization of their homelands. nor to those who want to overturn Net Zero before Europe begins to literally starve. Provost is less of a Catholic than a Marxist in a cassock. The problem is the few Europeans who attend Catholic Mass are increasingly leaning to the political right, whereas the leftist are overwhelmingly unreligious if not downright satanic. We could see another schism with conservative Catholics rallying to a charismatic leader who opposes Leo's destructive politics and heretical theology.
A last week I joked about Trump for Anti-Pope! Now I'm not joking.
It should help with their fundraising.
Leo XIII began the pratice in which all Catholics prayed a special prayer to St. Michael after every Mass. He wanted to draw their attention to the fact that a good Catholic would be in a major spiritual battle with the surrounding socio-political climate, specifically including the climate within the Church.
The name chamge thing might hearken back to Peter, but wasnt a consistent practice until almost them end of the 1st millenium. Like with lots of things it was intended to secure authortiy and connect with a seeming hero of the earlier days. It is always a statement of connection to the heritage of the name. Though here i cant help but think it implies a lack of imagination. But maybe thats not a bad thing
And thanks, Paddy O.
"He wanted to draw their attention to the fact that a good Catholic would be in a major spiritual battle with the surrounding socio-political climate, specifically including the climate within the Church."
This one will more like be selling climate indulgences in the form of higher forced expenditures on wind turbines and the like, and metaphorically burning anyone who points out the swindle.
I now know what we get when we cross a Marxist with a Jesuit (a pope who thinks he's the successor to Jesus Christ, not just Peter), but I am almost afraid to discover what we will get when we cross an American/Peruvian Augustinian with a bit of liberation theology. (I wonder if I can be struck by lightning in my own basement.)
I think calling himself Pope Francis II would have been too on the nose.
FWIW, approximately 80% of the cardinals in the conclave were created (appointed) by Pope Francis.
…so I just had to spend a couple days in downtown Atlanta and it’s in a state like you’d expect- big empty office towers, empty parking garages, addicts stumbling around…a shithole. Home of Coca-cola. Here’s where it gets relevant- I was hoping for Pope classic but instead it sounds like we got New Pope Two…
More of the same lefty-ism. But delivered in standard American English.
Nobody likes the Pope. He defends the unborn AND poor immigrants. He is supposed to PICK ONE!!!
The teachers union still has clout. They got their guy elected again.
The first Pan-American Pope, amazing!
"New pope about to..." I coulda swore the end of that sentence was going to be "see his shadow."
Excellent choice.

Grok answer incoming from Drago
Please tell me how the Pope is wrong, from a Catholic perspective.
Waving his finger of shame at the United States for deporting illegal aliens - while living securely behind the gated walls of the Vatican - doesn't seem very Catholic to me.
Unless Catholics want their leader to be a flaming hypocrite.
And FYI, Mark, I used to be a Catholic. Eight years of school, altar boy and all that good stuff. The tale end of John XXIII and then Paul VI, John Paul I and II.
The current church is a far cry from what it used to be. You can have it. I no longer have any use for it nor the current Pope.
Well, he's not some slick, hypocritical diplomat. That's good.
... (H)e is a member of the American Counsel of Cardinals. But he is a red. I've never heard of the ACC. I'll wait for a decision or two before I start making judgments about Leo XIV (although I will admit to several texts on X).

Well, that's all I need to know.
““Tell me you know the faith better than the Jesuits who taught me or the priests I have known personally.”
Just how well did you get to know them, Mark?
Did you know them for their good works?
I figured it was gonna be another Red Pope. The glee of the leftists here, doubtless all devout Catholics who attend mass daily and confession regularly, cinches it for me.

How is it possible you are Jesuit trained and cannot respond directly to a simple question?
Lets break it down, shall we?
Dumb Lefty Mark: "This is the Catholicism I learned in Parochial School and on, Drago"
Describe, in general terms (which should be sufficient) what "this" is and why it is "excellent".
Even Dumber Lefty Mark: "Tell me you know the faith better than the Jesuits who taught me or the priests I have known personally."
Why do you want me to tell you that? Are you having some sort of issue?
Continuing Dumbness from Dumb Lefty Mark: " Please tell me how the Pope is wrong, from a Catholic perspective"
Wrong about what?
What's most sad is how traditional/historical Jesuit teaching taught rigorous critical thinking and logical thought....
....and then a Dumb Lefty Mark comes along and demonstrates conclusively how an idiot can slip right on through...on top of all the Jesuit Universities and many parochial schools that have gone totally woke.
Do we really need to name them?
Fortunately, not all have and my own children have benefitted from luckily finding a Jesuit school that has held the line quite strongly and explicitly, and I mean explicitly, and tells the Dumb Lefty Mark types their type of thinking is incompatible with true Jesuit education and teachings.
There was quite the doctrinal kerfuffle just a handful of years ago involving the wokies trying to push the trans BS and leftist political thought. They were "invited" to leave the school and find a more "compatible" educational environment.
So I was quite pleased to have such an institution available to my family.
Jesuit schools are a bit pricey though...but the traditional ones are worth it. Unfortunate that in blue states no school choice is made available for poorer families to escape the Dumb Lefty Mark educational gulags.
Because the new Pope is American, most dioceses in the United States will be able to purchase necessities like incense and communion wafers without paying tariffs.

Tina Trent: Father Bob was a registered Republican when he lived on the South Side.
Drago, take your trolling and insults and shove them where the sun don't shine. Your very words make it clear you are not participating in a discussion, you are just flinging your poo.
Gadfly: that is meaningless. We don't know how he voted, only that he voted in GOP primaries. Abortion being the most important religious position, he likely voted Republican in the general elections too. But 1) he knew that vote was merely symbolic in Illinois, and 2) he has maintained a steady drumbeat of vituperous opposition to Trump and Vance on social media, demanding open borders while Vatican City has firmly shut walls. He is described as living mostly in Peru, but in fact he spent much more time in South Chicago. He was dispatched to the Vatican, as many Religious caught up in molestation scandal are, right around the time Pflager and another priest were accused of molestation under his watch. He delivered his blessings in Spanish and Italian but not English, despite having spent his entire childhood and much more of his time as a Priest and Bishop in South Chicago, and much less time in Peru than is being highlighted.
He is a political Trojan Horse, and he is an unusally political Cardinal, and his selection was unusual in other ways.. Worst, after scandals here and in Peru, he was placed in charge of the body of Cardinals that is supposed to investigate sexual misbehavior by Religious. But what do you know? You won't even use your name. We're done here. Keep cherrypicking headlines, pal.
What is most important is that he is being depicted as being mainly from Peru. This is entirely incorrect. He votes in all American elections, including 2024. He returned to Chicago regularly: Peru was a missionary position for him. Once I checked the dioces and timelines, he was in the states and in the middle of the Phleger mess and another sex scandal for which he was the Church arbiter. He hid the Priest near a dayschool.
He was chosen to divide and meddle in American politics; he is unusually political. I will have more on his ties to radicals and domestic terrorists in Chicago when I can research it. But he was in the right place at the right time. He needs to learn his political place. May God bless him with insight and to ask mercy from all the victims to whom he systematically denied justice and healing.
Drago is correct, Mark. You made a simple but vague statement "This is what I learned..." and Drago asks what "this" is? Drago might have agreed that "this" is what Jesuits teach and should teach, but who knows? We can't fill in the blanks for you. Why are you so hostile to clarifying what exactly you are saying? It's the equivalent of a listener saying, "That's interesting. Tell me more" only to have Lefty Mark snap "Stop interrogating me!"
Sure it's entertaining, but it's also perplexing and very, very on-brand for Lefties.
Dumb Lefty Mark: "Drago, take your trolling and insults and shove them where the sun don't shine. Your very words make it clear you are not participating in a discussion, you are just flinging your poo."
LOL
YOU cannot even express, at a high level, what it is that you believe a Jesuit education delivers from your own personal experience!
Nor explain why you believe "it" is excellent!
Nor tie that explanation to this latest Pope's selection, of which you claim to approve!
Mark, plumbing new Depths Of Dumb, as you knew he would.
It seems like almost every single non-Catholic I know has a very strong opinion about this new Pope, and they want you to know it, too.
LLR-democratical lonejustice gets very defensive whenever his fellow leftists are questioned about something.
But only every single time.
Unexpectedly.
Ah, lonejustice--even if the new guy was merely the head of a religion that claims universal truth, as a head of state and influential cultural figure he and his views are fair game for comment by anyone, even secular folks like me.
Mike, Drago has never been a part of any meaningful discussion with people who disagree with him in my 10+ years here. Its all straw men, deliberate misinterpretation, and insults.
Demanding that I write him an essay about Jesuit education and my life because I think this pope reflects that? Why would I waste my time on someone who treats me like trash and just wants to plug my words into Grok for a response?
He deserves nothing more than a reflection of the insults he ceaselessly vomits up daily here.
Dumb Lefty Mark: "Demanding that I write him an essay about Jesuit education and my life because I think this pope reflects that? "

Dumb Lefty Mark wouldn't recognize a "meaningful" discussion if it bit him in the arse.
I wonder where it was that I "demanded" Dumb Lefty Mark write an essay?
The very idea that anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together would request Dumb Lefty Mark write a coherent or on point or relevant essay on any subject under the sun is laughable on its face.
Want my perspective? Of course you do. That's why you come here. The position of pope has always been a political office. It is merely an extension of the Roman empire. They elect from among themselves a new emperor to manage the wealth and people of the empire. The Catholic Church serves the same purpose as the temples of ancient rome which were used as banks. Do popes matter? If you're catholic I suppose they do. Are they gods messenger on earth? Nope.
