"This order would reduce the number of interracial couples in TV commercials"/"Oh, it's just too many, right?"

"You see them in the kitchen together making meals from HelloFresh. He's wearing loafers, she's got tight braids. You're like: Where'd they meet, you know, what do they even talk about? It's insane."

Most of what is in that sketch has Trump signing orders with respect to things Trump has actually made an issue of his own, but I don't think he's ever seemed antagonistic toward interracial couples. I wonder how that made it into the sketch. And the line "He's wearing loafers, she's got tight braids" prompts us to picture the man as white and the woman is black, but the humor I've been hearing about these ads is that the man is always black and the woman is white. Anyway, the issue of interracial couples in TV commercials is a general topic for comedians these days. It's not connected to Trump, so it's rather scurrilous to throw this subject into the mix.

My wife's brother and his wife record SNL and when we are visiting they insist we watch the parts mocking Trump while looking at us expectantly as if they are trying to show us just how ridiculous Trump is. In the interest of family amity I refrain from pointing out that that isn't actually Trump. They watch NBC and think they are well informed, but are under the impression that Melania cannot speak English.

Interracial couples are indeed ubiquitous on the tube.
Real life? Not so much.
I was partnered and married to a black woman for 10 years, 10 years ago. We never encountered any reaction from people, much less racism.

Because they are trying to paint Trump as a racist, and they don't have much to work with? Maybe that's the answer.

The purpose of the sketch was to go after Stephen Miller more than Trump. They have a need to make him the evil monster controlling the puppet strings, much as they did with Big Dick Cheney (now getting Strange New Respect) 20 years ago.

"Wait, just checked, Trump’s picture was right next to the entry in the dictionary"

It probably is, given the way dictionaries are run these days. Web dictionaries are bought by politically active funds and the definitions are manipulated to advance Democrat Party objectives. For instance the term "baby" has been redefined to not include them if they have not yet been born. It's all explained in the novel 1984.

Jaq ayon kay ...

"I felt the baby kick today" is a nonsense sentence per Webster's online dictionary.

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

You mean SNL, and TV comics, are attacking Republicans? And falsely calling them racist? You mean like they did to Reagan, the two Bushes, Trump in his first term, and even St. John of Mcain.

BTW, is it somehow bad to object to this obvious anti-white male propaganda? It'd be unobjectionable, if 20 percent commericals had blacks in them, but judging by sports events on TV, its more like 60-65 percent. And boy do advertisers love to pair white women with black men.

None of this reflects reality. Its being done on purpose, and its NOT to make money.

R C Belaire ayon kay ...

Trump is all they've got. All Trump, all the time, since ~ 2015.

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

Btw, on Youtube its even worse. I'd say 80 percent of the commericals that pop up (before I hit skip) on my videos feature black/brown people and if you see a white, its usually a white woman paired with a black/brown. But usually just light skinned black people.

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

If Biden had made a joke about being Pope, then all the TV comics would laugh along. Haha - Biden made a funny. But with Trump they have laugh at him or profess outrage. This from people who are either not Catholic or haven't been to mass in 20 years.

Kate ayon kay ...

@Althouse -- that doesn't sound like it was meant to be funny. Trump as pope has much scope for humor.

bagoh20 ayon kay ...

A couple years ago we had a party with our 30-year old kids and all their friends, which included every single race, and both gay men and lesbians. I never laughed so hard in my life as the group sat around in huge circle telling every racist, sexist and anti-gay joke people could think of. Everybody got in on it, just bagging on every person there. Not a dry eye in the place, and not a single hint of offense by anyone, with the more offensive and brutal the slur, the funnier it was.
It was sublime, exhilarating, and wonderful. One of the best nights of my life.

Jay Vogt ayon kay ...

This is one of those topics that really requires a a good comedian to work his or her way through it. Because for me and for just about everybody (I think), raising this topic in any conversation - in any way - is going to create a work load for you that you just don't want to have to deal with.

Later in the show, they did a take-off on the Bill & Ted movies. Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman refuse to get back in the time machine and return to the 1860s because life is so much better in 1987. Bill & Ted even say "there's still prejudice and racism now!", which just gets a laughing "yeah, right" from Fred and Harriet. Then Fred goes up to a black yewt with a giant cellphone, asks him if he has a job that he gets paid for. When the yewt replies in the affirmative, Frederick Douglass says "see?".

I thought it was clever and broke out of the lefty bubble a little bit.

An even funnier bit would be to poke at what the White House describes as the "new media" influencer briefings. These propaganda dissemination sessions are more suited to North Korea. Which is actually perfectly in keeping with the new vibe shift in the Trump White House.

Or maybe I'm missing the point. The job of the White House spokesperson under this presidency is not to persuade a critical audience of their peers, but to humor an uncritical audience of Trump’s supporters. The others he can just continue lying to until they give up.

OTOH -- This is the White House that's endorsing cryptocurrency with the president's name on it, I don't think they're very concerned with optics or decorum at this moment in time...

I prefer ads with a white beta male, a strong black woman and an Asian baby. Unlike Bagoh’s UN comedy circle, I enjoy my races in the wild. Say looking around a crowded intersection in Nairobi and seeing only dark black faces. Or spending a few years in Ukraine and facing the truth that white people can live complete lives without a daily diversity drumbeat. Now I’ve decamped to southeast Asia and I go weeks without seeing another white person. What a relief! Especially the absence of suburban white women. Destroyers of culture and the planet with their outsized needs for approval and hyperactive nesting instincts

The interracial-couple ads seem to be a US thing. A related advertising phenomenon is what I call Generic Light-Brown People. The men usually have shaved heads, and the women's hair is usually heavily styled, so you don't get any racial cues from hair color or texture. The people can pass for a lot of possible ethnicities. Also, there is usually no dialog, just voiceover. I conclude that these ads are meant to be shot once and used in as many countries as possible. Probably only the Japanese, Koreans, and Han Chinese get turned off by them.

My suggestion: Have Trump speaking with Bezos, Elon, Zuck, and a few other billionaires. They start out with the rich guys telling Trump to give them special tax breaks, to censor political opposition on their social platforms, eventhe power to enslave workers. Trump listens, then say something like, "How about instead we make things better for everyone, and you guys help?" Now that would be funny, if carried to the logical yet absurd conclusion of them agreeing.

Lazarus ayon kay ...

The thinking is: Trump is your dad. Or somebody else's dad. At any rate, he's the straight White male patriarchy and everything that you hate can be associated with Trump. And if you feel insecure about your own life and achievements you can make Trump out to be the great enemy of the diverse world you live in. It was the same way with Reagan. Even or especially when Ronald Reagan actually and literally was your dad.

Especially the absence of suburban white women. Destroyers of culture and the planet with their outsized needs for approval and hyperactive nesting instincts

I would have loved to have asked Susan Sontag if white women were the cancer of history and watch her head explode.

Ice Nine ayon kay ...

The TV commercial impression that 90% of couples are mixed White/Black is dumb enough. What I love is the utterly absurd notion of mixed Asian/Black couples that the ad agencies pitch at us, which ignore the fact that loathing of Blacks is a near-universal sentiment of Asian cultures. Ah well, if you're going to do fiction, you might as well lay it on thick, I guess.

The paradox of mixed color couples is that the future looks monochromatic.

I don’t mind, in the least, interracial marriages. One of my best friends, a girlfriend of some 50 years ago, married a black man, they had 2 beautifully, accomplished, kids, and she buried him several years ago after 40 years together. Mixing with other races and ethnicities is, if possible, even more common today. We are in town (Boulder) this weekend for my granddaughter’s baptism. And the aunt who showed up is very obviously Hispanic. My French Catholic partner has several Hispanics in her extended family. I think that it is the common Catholicism there. Funny thing is that she has picked up several good friends in Las Vegas, who are black - and, inevitably Catholic. The thing about Blacks, is that if they say that they are praying for you (or her), you know that they are.

Interestingly to me, the place we are really seeing the most interracial marriage these days is at the top, politically. Two VPs in a row in interracial (or inter ethnic) marriages. Several others in Trump’s Cabinet. I think that it is a good thing.

But I do have problems with interracial TV ads and shows. The ads all look so formulaic. No attempt is made to match the race or ethnicity of the actors utilized to the target market. It’s one of these, one of these, and one of these. Except that Blacks are inevitably greatly overrepresented, and their share likely comes from Asians. And, now, with the weekday soaps now all seeming to have prominent black stores lines, CBS has added a black soap opera, right after Days of our Lives. To me, this seems like pandering, and trying to redivide our populace by race, when overall we seem to be moving away from that, as evidenced by the greatly increased numbers of interracial and interethnic marriages in our country. At a time that the racial and ethnic lines are blurring this country, the left, including the major networks, are desperately trying to sharpen those same racial and ethnic lines. Of course, the Dem Party has been the racist (and ethnic) party for 200 years now, so why should I expect anything else from them?

William ayon kay ...

On the LES of Manhattan, Chinatown rubs up against some projects that are Puerto Rican. Ordinary looking Puerto Ricans and Chinese pair off and produce extravagantly gorgeous looking kids......There are lots of different tribes in Africa, but the one ethnic strand that more Blacks have than any other is Irish.
