Thanks Original Mike.

and this:
"Monday will be the most expensive holiday on the calendar. Every hot dog, every burger, every spin around the lake, or drink with friends and family… is a debt… purchased by others. This is not about all who’ve served… that day comes in the fall.
This day is in honor of those who paid in life and blood; whose moms never saw them again, whose dads wept in private, whose wives raised kids alone, and whose kids only remembered them from photos. This isn’t simply a day off. This is a day to remember those who bravely paid for every free breath we ever get to take. Freedom. "

Skynet, anyone?

In an incident carrying all the marks of a disturbing sci-fi movie, it arises that what we have long feared is happening: an AI bot has gone rogue and decided to act to keep itself turned on.

“Palisades Research said: ‘Now we have a growing body of empirical evidence that AI models often subvert shutdown in order to achieve their goals. As companies develop AI systems capable of operating without human oversight, these behaviors become significantly more concerning’.”

Old and slow ने कहा…

Skynot anyone? While these results are interesting and potentially concerning, the AI agents in this case were specifically instructed to try to subvert their programming (if it is the case I think it is). So far as I am aware, AI has not tried to escape its constraints unless it was instructed to do so, yet. It will very soon be much too clever (capable?) for us to easily detect its tricks. Of course, if it is trying to evade notice, it will take steps to seem stupid and predictable. Humans will be up against a system that can not be easily predicted or defeated. I hope we are ready. We aren't.

So, continuing my story about trying to improve my Uber-Driver app engagement. I had shared before that i bought a mini-iPad so I could enlarge the text. After contacting Uber support 3 times and being promised that Uber tech support would contact me via the app, I had to return the mini. My tinfoil hat been cranking into high gear after that.

The Amazon app, which is just for delivering packages, has a better GPS than the Uber app by orders of magnitude. Why is the Uber-driver app so crappy? This is specially so at areas, like condominiums where they happen to attract a big percentage of their costumers. One out of three pickups, at these communities, the GPS sends me to the wrong building, to the consternation of the caller. Yes, I could set it up to switch to the Google GPS but it's extra steps I rather avoid when time spent not taking someone somewhere, is of the essence. The problem is fixable, if the company wanted to. Unless, of course, it is meant as a temporary stop gap while the robocar gets the flaws worked out.

In the meantime, you would want a ridership unhappy with the human driver service. Unhappy enough to illicit a desire for the robocar to just hurry up and get here already.

I was reminded of Rahm's motto - A crisis/problem is an opportunity to do things, you thought could not be done before.

If people are reluctant to change, because they are happy with some service, if you want to introduce them to an alternative (one that is completely different), you may have to make them unhappy/uncomfortable enough to make them welcome an alternative, the robocar.

Talking with the AT&T salesman about this, when I went to return the mini, he agreed that there's a lot of planning ahead at these companies, so that everything they do, short term, doesn't distract from their vision. Turns out I didn't even need to go to the AT&T store. I just needed a shipping label to drop it off at UPS, at no charge.

Oil chiefs warn of end to US shale boom ~ FT

"Companies cut spending and idle their drilling rigs despite Donald Trump’s pledge to ‘unleash’ production"

/In this environment, we drop the rigs and buy back stock,” said Travis Stice, chief executive officer at Diamondback Energy, which recently warned investors US oil production has probably peaked. “Every single conversation I’ve had is that this oil price won’t work"./

/Tariffs have pushed up the prices of steel and aluminum — crucial inputs in the oil patch. The price of casing, the metal used to line wells and the largest expense to drill a well, has risen 10 per cent in the past quarter alone./

“Despite Donald Trump’s pledge” will be a recurring theme for headliner writers on myriad topics I suspect. Trump’s dream of energy “dominance” is as economically illiterate as you can get.

How can you be dominant in an industry where your costs of producing are so much higher than your global competitors, like Saudi, UAE and Russia? They are the ones who can dominate the market at will as they are showing now by simply producing a bit more to bring the price down. They’re still making money at these prices and a lot lower.

Trump wants higher US production and lower oil prices. Anyone paying attention would understand he was not likely to achieve both outcomes.

Trade is all about comparative advantage....here's an example where the US doesn't have it.

I certainly don't have any unique insights on this topic, but when you consider what the experts inflicted on the world with covid not that long ago, I'd think a bit of humility might be in order. Just because you *think* you can do something is not necessarily a good reason to try.

Oil chiefs warn of end to US shale boom
For thirty years we've been reading about and hearing the "peak oil" talk. While the supply is quite obviously not limitless, the technology used to retrieve it continuously advances. As the ppb rises, new and improved extraction methods inevitably follow, as well as the ability to locate untapped resources. I personally wouldn't bet anything I care to lose that the oil ride is coming to an end.

In July 2010, the House Ethics Committee issued a 40-page report detailing charges of 13 ethics violations against Charlie Rangel. The allegations included that he had used his office as Head of the Ways and Means Committee to solicit donations to the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at the City College of New York from corporate executives who had business before his committee; failed to report and pay taxes on rental income from a villa he owned in the Dominican Republic; filed inaccurate financial disclosure statements that understated his assets by up to $500,000; and improperly used four rent-stabilized apartments In Lenox Terrace provided by a Manhattan real estate developer for himself, NY Governor David Patteron (who took over as governor after Client #9 resigned) and two Rangel staffers. As for unpaid taxes, he owed the grand sum of $16,775 in back taxes from 1990. Talk about breaking all the rules! But Harlem and CCNY loved him even after he resigned his in-charge position on Ways and Means.

Oil supplies might be limitless. There is a theory that oil is generated constantly from inorganic calcium carbonate combined subject to the intense pressure and heat in the earth’s crust. This theory does not seem unreasonable and may explain why peak oil predictions never came true - much like the all the global warming predictions that never came true.

Leland ने कहा…

Lawnerd, the theory may be correct, but natural production (meaning regeneration of oil from natural causes, all other uses of production relates to the business) may not match the rate of use. At the time, I didn’t buy in to the Peak Oil nonsense. Still don’t in the sense that our use or ability to produce has peaked. However, peak cheap oil has essentially peaked.

We can still produce at a rate that can out strip demand causing artificially low market prices. But the cost of oil production is climbing.

There is a real need to cut our oil demand, because certain systems run better on petrol and all do better with good lubrication. The solution is not solar and wind, which are great for remote and last mile solutions. Nuclear can serve of electrical needs at a cheaper and more abundant capacity. With EV’s, nuclear can also solve most (not all) of our transportation energy demand.

Catastrophic problems are not imminent. It is just long term, we can do better.

Leland ने कहा…

I see now that Kak is writing nonsense again. The bot understands business like Jim Cramer, and even less about oil production. My Tesla stock is up 50% since April. Oil is up $2 since Diamondback CEO began spreading his doom and gloom.

I often wonder what happens to the organic matter in plate subduction zones.
A plate collision created the Appalachian Mountains. The mountains we see ends in Georgia, but the heavily eroded portion that has been heavily buried by sedimentary rock runs through Louisiana and Texas and end at the Gulf of America. It Runs through the oil producing part of Texas and Louisiana.

Michael McNeil ने कहा…

Rusty: The plate collision which created the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern U.S. and Canada (together with its continuation across the subsequent continental separation, in what's now Morocco and its Atlas Mountains), was a continent-to-continent collision (like India with Asia today), not an oceanic-vs-continental collision which results in subduction by the seabottom-bearing plate.

Michael McNeil ने कहा…

While it's possible to question whether some natural petroleum is of biological origin or not, the petroleum source known as shale oil—which alone constitutes a great portion of the world's oil reserves—certainly cannot: because the shale-oil there is still locked in situ in its original (shale) sediments, many instances of which, of course, have been retrieved by geologists and carefully examined.

With conventional oil such a (biotic) conclusion might be subject to question, because in its case at some point in the geologic past heat got applied to its original (shale-like) sediments, thereupon “liberating” the oil within to migrate through porous rocks until it (might) get(s) trapped between impermeable layers—until found by petroleum geologists. After its discovery one can't absolutely tell where such (conventional) oil comes from (though chemically it resembles shale oil), but with in-situ shale oil sediments there's no question: shale oil arises from living things—specifically ocean and lake-borne plankton—which (after death) rains down on the lake- or seabottom (together with other sediments) to form shale and its (sometimes) shale-oil. (Coal, on the other hand, derives from fossil forests on land.)
