From Paul Caron (TaxProf blog) via Instapundit:

New York University School of Law barred 31 pro-Palestine law school students from campus facilities and demanded that they sign away their right to protest in exchange for being allowed to return. If the students — deemed “personae non grata,” or PNG — don’t renounce their right to protest on campus, they will be unable to sit for final exams.

So there is one law school willing to do what’s right.

The official American eugenics society seems to have disbanded. It was a registered company, an Inc., and that company is not longer listed at the IRS or in New York State data base. Which is great news because it means that organized eugenics in the US has disbanded.

In the days of success for eugenics, the US and England each had a national eugenics society which incorporated with it all the differents trends and versions of eugenics, just as a Parliament or Congress might represent different regions or different versions of society. And the leaders of those national eugenic societies were always promoting a specific version of eugenics - focusing propaganda, leading campaigns, on behalf of sterilization say or abortion or the Nazis, getting grants and university positions for those who favored their outlook - and so on. These campaigns were always opposed within the society by at least one strong minority view. So for example, the Eugenics Society (of England) had strong Nazi supporters in leadership roles in the late Thirties but they were opposed by a left-wing eugenics led by HJ Muller and others and by a liberal eugenics led by CP Blacker and others.

The point is that when one version of eugenics, such as the Nazi version, failed the American national eugenics society was able to keep going by bringing forward a former minority which promoted a new, untarnished version of eugenics - such as the question of IQ and race or such as behavior genetics with its polygenic risk score.

And the point about the society disbanding is that its members must have decided that they have no version which is untarnished; that people are onto them whatever new banner they hoist, whatever shape-shifting they they indulge in.

Since the organized work of the American eugenics society
was always a poison in society; since its members were always looking for some group to label inferior and oppress through social policies, it's good news that the organization is has disbanded its national society.

Its former members might be scattered about in small groups like Horcruxes, hiding their identity and hoping to reunite someday, greater and more terrible than before.

But it very well could be that this youngest generation of 2025 for all its flaws is impervious to the appeal of the eugenic myth. The youngest adults among us simply will not look for a group to look down on for scientific reasons. (Of course, the youngest are dismayingly ready to be antisemites under the guise of settler-colonial theory but, honestly, that is another, separate kind of social evil.)

Maybe organized eugenics has ended. In my lifetime.

wildswan, we can hope! While we're hoping, let's hope the young decide to embrace plain old genetics and just have some kids already. I let forth a silent cheer whenever I see a family of five (which, because I live in Texas, is fortunately more common than where I am currently vacationing in California).

Following on from that... every time I come here, which is rather more frequently than for most because all our close family and many friends are here, I hear, "O California, California!" in the same tone in which I imagine Jesus cried out, "O, Jerusalem, Jerusalem!"

I got a deal on Apple streaming watched the first season of The Morning Show. It stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrell, but they don't play it for laughs. It dramatizes important feminist problems and, for the most part, does so very seriously. I did a slow burn for the most of it, but I got through the whole season. One segment aged particularly poorly The showed The Morning Show out in LA reporting on the wildfires. This was several years. The news they broke was that some wealthy landowners had arranged for their own private firefighters to protect their property. The story was presented as a kind of scandal. How dare wealthy people use their wealth to protect their property from the flames.....Oh, kiss off. The show militantly presents the feminist viewpoint on workplace issues, but the more recent LA fires are subversive to that viewpoint. After a rigorous, unbiased competition, the LA Fire Dept chose three lesbians for its top three executives and, at the time of the fire, more than 25% of the engines were down for repairs. The female Mayor was not present for the fire. There was not much cause to celebrate the feminist cause during those fires. As I understand it, the one part of town that successfully fought the flames was a private entity such as the one that was "exposed" by The Morning Show.......It's an okay show. The dialogue is punchy, if not credible, and the actors are appealing. Even so, the LA fires are exactly the wrong backdrop for drama about plucky feminists.

"NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) -- Air traffic controllers guiding planes bound for Newark Liberty International Airport lost radar and radio communication for over a minute early last week before flights at the key hub were snarled for days, according to people familiar with the matter.

The outage of those key systems occurred on April 28 and lasted nearly 90 seconds, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing the matter because it isn’t public. Following the incident, multiple employees were placed on trauma leave.

The incident and resulting reduction in staffing contributed to a week of flight delays and cancellations at Newark airport that pushed United Airlines Holdings Inc. to cut 35 daily round-trip flights at the key hub, its biggest for international departures and a primary gateway for domestic flights.

The details, which haven’t previously been reported, paint a dire picture of the shortcomings at the Federal Aviation Administration operation in Philadelphia that guides flights into and out of Newark. The facility is understaffed and has experienced technology failures. When radar or radio frequencies stop working, one of the people said there are no fail-safes, meaning controllers must wait for the system to come back online.

In a statement, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association confirmed that the facility had 'temporarily lost radar and communications with the aircraft under their control, unable to see, hear, or talk to them.'"

With all the airplane crashes and deaths that have occurred in Trump's first 100 days, Untrained Transportation Secretary Duffy needs to be fired. Former FAA director, Mike Whitaker, resigned on January 20, 2025, because Elon Musk wanted him gone because he fined SpaceX for multiple regulatory violations.

Trump, Jon Voight meeting led to Hollywood tariff proposal, his manager says ~ CNBC

Another Trump announcement that was not thought through. No surprise here.

What always staggered me about Trump is how he is colossally ill informed about *everything*. This is yet another classic example of not even spending 5 minutes thinking things through, which to be fair he is entirely incapable of. He never asks the Charlie Munger question: “what next?”

Reagan, by contrast, was an averagely intelligent man who was aware of his limitations and who surrounded himself with first rate deputies, eg when they drilled him on Soviet history before meeting Gorbachev.

Trump wants to balance trade deficits by destroying the few sectors where the U.S. maintains surpluses. i.e. entertainment, education, and tourism. Par for course for him.

" as Europe was rah rah-ing the war in Ukraine, they were buying oil and gas from Russia."

Where are they supposed to buy it? The whole point of the war in Ukraine was to collapse the Russian Federation so that they could have unlimited access to Russian resources at looters' prices.

Pakistan is begging Russia to mediate in their conflict with India, which is really funny, because, after we ordered Pakistan to arrest and imprison their president and replaced him because he made a trip to Moscow, the new president emptied their arsenals, sending it to Ukraine to use to kill Russians, and now they are facing a war with India, and according to logic, and some sources, they are wishing that they had their artillery back.

Incidentally, the crime that Imran Kahn was charged with was publicly referring to the true fact that the US had warned the Pakistani parliament of "severe consequences" if they didn't remove and imprison Kahn. They charged him with "revealing state secrets," right out of Kafka.

I have been having a good time watching manosphere style videos, and they explain so much about TV shows I never really understood. For instance, I always thought that it was sexism why the man in a sitcom tends to be a schlub and the woman is always beautiful, but really, it's because that's the way most women see their own marriages, that they are the perfect ones, and the man is beneath them, always in need of their "guidance." They don't do it for the men, although sure it helps ratings there, but primarily, they do it to validate women's feelings. It's really a twofer.

Eventually, though, it was destroyed, after they returned to business as usual. Not much left of it now, especially since ISIS looted it. Saddam wanted to rebuild it, but we know how that turned out.

"A major threat to Nineveh has been purposeful human actions by ISIL or Daesh, which occupied the area between 2014 and 2017. In early 2015, they first announced their intention to destroy the walls of Nineveh if the Iraqis tried to liberate the city and they also threatened to destroy artifacts and the destruction of archaeological heritage. On February 26 2015, video footage shows IS smashing statues and artifacts at the Mosul Museum. They are believed to have plundered others to sell overseas. The items were mostly from the Assyrian exhibit, which Daesh declared blasphemous and idolatrous. There were 300 items remaining in the museum out of a total of 1,900, with the other 1,600 being taken to the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad for security reasons prior to the 2014 Fall of Mosul."

Elon Musk planning on stepping away from DOGE ~ WSJ

Musk only achieved 7.5% of his $2 Trillion goal, but I’ll bet he reduced government productivity far more than that.

We are seeing one small example at Newark airport...

But when you add up NIH, VA, FAA, SS, and pretty much every other department, the damage runs into incalculable billions.

His hidden method was to eliminate investigations into his businesses, damage OIG, and intimate the serfs in civil service. Mission Accomplished.

Ancient Nineveh today is Mosul, 2nd largest city in (northern) Iraq. More recently, Mosul was subject to ISIS for more than 3 years—2014 to 2017—until they were cleared out by U.S. led (principally Iraqi) forces under the 1st Trump Administration.

An extended quote from C. S. Lewis:

The real test is this. Suppose one reads a story of filthy atrocities in the paper. Then suppose that something turns up suggesting that the story might not be quite true, or not quite so bad as it was made out. Is one's first feeling, "Thank God, even they aren't quite so bad as that," or is it a feeling of disappointment, and even a determination to cling to the first story for the sheer pleasure of thinking your enemies as bad as possible? If it is the second then it is, I am afraid, the first step in a process which, if followed to the end, will make us into devils. You see, one is beginning to wish that black was a little blacker. If we give that wish its head, later on we shall wish to see grey as black, and then to see white itself as black. Finally, we should insist on seeing everything - God and our friends and ourselves included - as bad, and not be able to stop doing it: we should be fixed forever in a universe of pure hatred.

Certainly I see this tendency in myself, and I'm thankful to Lewis for pointing it out so that I can guard against it. But... I don't think I'm speaking without perspective when I say that I see this tendency as rather an organizing principle for today's Left. They cling (bitterly?) to the worst version of every anti-Trump or anti-right or anti-West story, long after mitigating facts have come out. And certainly self-hatred on a societal (though generally not a personal) level seems to be foundational.

I'm sure it all started, for most, with the best of intentions: self-mortification in order to elevate the oppressed Other. But they certainly seem to be "fixed in a universe of pure hatred" now.

Elon Musk had issued a controversial directive affecting federal employees, including air traffic controllers, demanding they submit weekly accomplishment reports or face forced resignation. In an email sent Saturday by the Office of Personnel Management—now dominated by Musk loyalists—controllers and other federal staff were ordered to list five tasks they completed last week and copy their manager.
“Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” Musk posted on X, escalating tensions within key government agencies. The directive raises concerns about operational stability in air traffic control, a field where staffing shortages can have serious safety implications.
The move follows former President Trump’s call for Musk to take a more aggressive stance in his federal oversight role, emphasizing his commitment to reshaping government operations.
