From "A Blouse Gets Entangled in a Political Tussle in Eastern Europe/Nationalists in Romania have adopted an item of clothing traditionally worn by villagers, particularly women. Liberals say it’s an appropriation of a cultural identity that belongs to everyone" (NYT).
2. Will embroidering keep the kids off their phone? It will keep them from looking at their phone, but not, I think, from listening. What music/podcast/audiobook would you listen to if your were doing some time-consuming, detailed embroidery? Here's a playlist of Romanian popular music.
3. What item of traditional American clothing could a political movement adopt and cause you distress like that experienced in Romania over this blouse — something you or people you like want to keep wearing and now feel that to wear it is to express support for a cause they oppose?
4. When I was young, I used to worry that various items of clothing (or jewelry) had symbolic meaning that I didn't understand and I worried about unintentionally associating myself with a cause I didn't know or understand.
5. "Though Henri Matisse’s prolific career as an artist greatly inspired numerous pieces and collections designed by the creative legend Yves Saint Laurent, it was Saint Laurent’s interpretation of Matisse’s illustrated and painted Romanian folk blouses that became an iconic house staple for generations to come...." These days, the elite won't do that. They are controlled into submission by the phrase "cultural appropriation."

You can't wear that! It belongs to everyone.
Got it.
"What item of traditional American clothing . . ."
Sandals and socks.
Good lord democrats are nag’s. Thats why they lean so heavily towards communism, they desperately want to tell everyone what to do.
Liberals operate under an established Pro-Choice religion a moral vice thet is selective, opportunistic and chaotic to the unwary observer.
When I worked at Intel, I bought some Intel-branded baseball caps. Which were blue, as that was Intel's brand color. One day I was riding my bike through the closest thing Eugene has to a bad part of town (there are very few negroes in Eugene, outside of the U of O athletic complex), and a guy in a car driving by leaned out the window and made some weird hand gestures at me.
Thinking about this, I realized that he was so clueless he thought a 60-year-old white guy on a road bike was a gang-banger because I was wearing a blue hat. What would that make me, a Crip or a Blood?
If it belongs to everyone, how can anyone appropriate it? Typical stupid bullshit from The Times.
"...Liberals say it’s an appropriation of a cultural identity that belongs to everyone" (NYT)...."
Editorializing in the headlines again ! Stop the headline pollution !
A tradition is always both an imposition and a choice.
They're choosing no.
Narr - shorts (for men)
The progressives in the article griping that the blouse belongs to all Romanians need to ask themselves if they truly believe that. Obviously, they don't. If they did, they wouldn't have stopped wearing the blouse.
If Donald Trump stopped wearing a suit and tie and proclaimed in the future, he and all true Americans would only wear T-shirts, blue jeans and sneakers, leftists would explode.
The Left just doesn't get that they are 'right-coding' 80/20 issues and attitudes by taking the 20% position.
If it belongs to everyone then go ahead and wear it. If you’re afraid wearing it will make people think you’re on the other side then you cede, for your side, whatever cultural significance people attach to the clothing.
Look at Progs and the American flag. Young Progs recoil or decry the display of the flag. Boomer Progs might mount one on the porch of their Craftsman on the 4th of July, but everyone understands it’s merely decorative.
Any and every utterance or move by the nationalists in Romania must be criticized. Think of them as MAGA Romania and you will understand. They don't want their country to be used as a "doorway to war" by NATO, but the globalists have other ideas. This makes them "far right."
Romania is the country where an election can be annulled based on unsubstantiated allegations of foreign interference that further investigation shows was just shenanigans by the ruling party there, which they then blamed on Putin, (sound familiar?) and elections can be sustained, even as solid evidence of foreign interference, this time from France, which forced down the jet of the owner of Telegram, and held him for weeks, and, he claims, told him to silence conservative voices on his platform prior to the elections in that country.
Let's all pretend, though, that snuffing out democracy in that country, in service of the war on Russia, is not the big story. That the stuff coming out of Romania is heartwarming. "Nationalism" is the opposite of "globalism" and therefore must be stamped out wherever it arises!
And I seriously question that the craft of embroidery is dying out anywhere. I’m often surprised by the traditional subcultures sustained by the tatted and pink-haired.
You have to hand it to those who snuffed out democracy in Romania, in order to keep alive their hope for WW3 starting in Europe, for having the chutzpah to brand themselves "liberals."
"cultural appropriation" phase is more cult BS from the cult left.
when i hear it or see it used, I think - oh go F off.
I got a freaky ol' lady
name a cocaine Katy who embroideries on my jeans
I got my poor ol' grey-haired daddy driving my limousine
Now it's all designed to blow our minds
but our minds won't really be blown
Like the blow that'll get ya when you get your picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone
more cultural anthropology in the Times, a bizarre tribe of traditionalists,
Ol' Neil didn't like The Donald using his songs. Imagine that.
There was a span of about two late 80’s years when patterned sweaters for men were… hip. By the time the Huxtable's head of household discovered it, the trend was over.
So now "liberals" are saying that appropriation isn't just using things from another culture. They're saying that it's "appropriation" to use things from your own culture if you don't agree with everyone elses values in that culture.
Give me a break.
3." What item of traditional American clothing could a political movement adopt and cause you distress like that experienced in Romania over this blouse — something you or people you like want to keep wearing and now feel that to wear it is to express support for a cause they oppose?"
Wearing certian colors of plaid shirts in L.A. might get you attacked by the gang bangers if they think that you're wearing it because you are supporting a rival gang.
Maybe it was the Misogynist thinking of the 50's but my high school had a number of classes under the umbrella of HomEc. S of those were sewing classes. BTW, my Jr. High (middle school?) in Santa Cruz, CA had a boys cooking class which had more students applying than could be accommodated. I did get A+'s for my fluffy omelet and banana cream pie.
A more honest headline would just end with "Liberals/Leftists don't like it".
The Times also had two truly hate-deranged feature pieces recently, one an advice column asking how to avoid being mistaken for MAGA if you like to wear clingy sheath-dresses (answer: only wear blue ones, and ornament them to demonstrate your intelligence); the other a hysterical screed about how "Asian salad" is a cultural appropriation so evil as to be practically tantamount to food genocide via Applebees.
I'm sure Melania Trump could make one of those blouses while speaking one of the five or so languages in which she is fluent.
I guess a t-shirt with big "OK sign" on it would be similar. SInce "Liberals" decided the OK sign was a super-secret, Nazi/Fascist dog whistle. I believe some leftists wanted to say "Thumbs up" was , but lost in close vote.
The problem isn't the MSM coming up with moronic things. The problem is the army of Libtards that follow and believe everything the MSM says. Its why the stupidest people vote Democrat.
Liberals/leftists wear Teslas like a blouse.
thats a chicken egg question,
I believe baseball caps are also suspect, even if they are only plain red. We have also recently been informed by our betters that if you are a Republican and wear a cross, you don't really mean it. As a Catholic, whose miniscule cross is only worn to Church, I leave that battle to the other types of Christians, especially the ones in red skintight sheath dresses and four inch heels. They're much more fierce, and they know their Bibles verses by heart.
Americans have a mish-mash of traditional clothing. Pilgrims didn't dress like frontiersmen. Southerners didn't dress like northerners. And the Dutch who settled in NY didn't dress like the English anywhere.
Seems a red ball cap of any kind, even without MAGA across the front, distresses liberals today. Severl stories of men being attacked by liberal WOMEN for wearing one. Including on airplanes. Me? I hate ball caps of any kind. Don't wear them.
Cowboy hat- now there's a traditional item. Some look very good in them- I look like a dork in a cowboy hat if I don one.
The red Pilgrim style dress has been used by idiot protesters. And the famous vagina hats. Wear either one og those and people know you're part of a movement.
But wearing clothing that upsets the other side is a one way thing in the USA. I can wear all sorts of things that will upset the left- including message T-shirts- I've got a few Gadsden style I wear. Seems advocating for individual freedom in that way upsets the left. But nothing they wear will upset the right- at most, we'll die laughing at them.
I'd like to see patriots bringing back the tricorn hat. Very American. And I look good in one. Finding a quality one vs a cheap costume one is difficult. A bunch of people suddenly sprouting them would send the left in a tizzy. And the return of genuine beaver hats would cause animal right's activists to have heart attacks.
Imagine if liberals got their way on everything. A hell on Earth. Ignoring them is the path to peace, dignity and prosperity.
I want a warmer greener planet, more cultural sharing, marginalizing the concept of race, openness, acceptance of harmless sexual innuendo and flirting, a one tier justice system, respect for work and property, and a healthy formulation of alcohol.
To answer your question: Jeans.
Tradition is peer pressure from dead people.
honestly reading the Times op ed makes my eyes roll all the way to the top of my skull
"A bunch of people suddenly sprouting them would send the left in a tizzy."
To be fair, there's not a lot that doesn't.
This reminds me of a memoir I recently read about Germany’s embrace of the Nationalist ideology. More traditional clothing was promoted and seen as sign of being a good German. Zeitgeist…
Key Changes in Women's Fashion:
Return to Folk Styles:
“The Nazis encouraged women to adopt traditional German folk costumes, particularly the "dirndl" (a short dress, apron, and blouse with a tight waist). This was seen as a way to connect with Germany's "racial roots" and create a sense of national identity.
Rejection of Western Modernism:
The flapper style of the 1920s, which was considered "French-dominated" and "Jewish" by the Nazis, was strongly criticized. The Nazis also disapproved of Western trends like wearing trousers and makeup.”
Fashion under the Swastica
Christopher B-- I thought the shorts went without saying . . .
and I'll give up my tiki torch when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.
Now - the fashion of choice inside the dominate college campus leftist culture/ of Jew hate in plain site - in America - is the Palestinian keffiyeh.
I read "The Handmaids Tale" and OMG - Joy Behar is right - Trump is doing it.
so they stole the election again, so they have to stigmatize the affected ones,
joy behar is right, is a null set,
the odds that the Times that doesn't understand this country would have a clue about another culture, seems daft
of course Charlottesville, and the truth, they wanted to tear down all the statues, Teddy Roosevelt one of the lates,
In the Old Days when the Girl Scouts focused on a range of activities for girls, I know there was a badge for embroidery. We didn't necessarily want to embroider, we just wanted the achievement endorphin for completing the badge and sewing it on our sash. Girls learned everything, from sewing and cooking to camping and fire building.
At this point scouting is a glorified play group at best.
HOW is it "an appropriation"
if the cultural identity "belongs to everyone" ??\
do people even Think about what they are saying?
Hitler liked dogs.
You know who else likes dogs - everyone. Even American leftists.
What do we do now?
I screwed up.
Fauci and that democrat who wants to Impeach Trump - they hate Dogs. They Torture dogs.
MAGA should appropriate the red bandana hanging out the back pocket.
Springsteen and promiscuous gays would self-destruct.
JSM
Liberals say it’s an appropriation of a cultural identity that belongs to everyone" (NYT).
Then instead of bitching about it, start wearing them
"Then instead of bitching about it, start wearing them"
And give up being perpetually aggrieved? I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.
@Inga says..."...The Nazis encouraged women to adopt traditional German folk costumes...."
Yes, a classical important sign that it's important not to miss. Those Romanians.... going ...nationalistic !! What could be next in Romania, except for (in a low, thrilling voice) - Nazis !
Reminds me of the good old days, when youngsters got to wearing traditional outfits - moccasins, embroidered shirts, long skirts, sandals, leather pants, so on. They were a dangerous menace, questioning authority, protesting. Hippies, we called'em.
Aggie: "Reminds me of the good old days, when youngsters got to wearing traditional outfits - moccasins, embroidered shirts, long skirts, sandals, leather pants, so on. They were a dangerous menace, questioning authority, protesting. Hippies, we called'em."
But they were a menace! They grew up to be the people censoring, taxing and locking up the normies.

Hitler was also a vegetarian and an animal lover and believed that the state should dictate which models of cars to build. Just sayin'.
shes sdba to the last drop,

Drawing a blank here. Southern Drag Boat Association? Self-Directed Brokerage Account? Special Duty Breathing Apparatus? Slow-witted, Dim Bulb, Addlepated?
The "Liberty Cap" (Phrygian or Thracian cap) bestowed on freed slaves in ancient Rome became a symbol of the American and French Revolution. Don't let it near your pussy hat, as it's vaguely phallic.
Somebody on campus wrote a novel -- and in French. I was told that the title was "La blouse humaine," which I understood to mean "The Human Shirt" and was fascinated by what that might possibly mean. When I met the author, she explained that the title was "La blouse roumaine. It referred to the painting by Matisse and (less impressively) to the fact that her current boyfriend was Rumanian. I may read it someday, as I've never known a roman à clef that I actually had a clef or clé to.
The Nazis were against cigarette smoking and in favor of physical fitness. So, I asume Inga - like a good libtard - smokes and doesn't exercise.
Nazis were also in favor of great art, great architecture, and great music. Which no doubt accounts for libtards loving abstract art, 12 foot ugly statues of black women, and rap and other shit music.
I'd assume that we could go back to our roots and wear Indian dress and dump some tea in the harbor. But I'd prefer to just carry a tiki-torch and wear a big MAGA hat
A liberal philosopher who followed progressive principles of wicked solutions, political congruence ("="), Dreams of Herr Mengele, Diversity (Equivocation and Indoctrination), ethnic Springs, environmentalism in Green deals, and politics from the left end of the political spectrum.
Adopt the integrated Rainbow, a white banner, and stand against albinophobia promulgated through the transgender spectrum and the politically congruent orthodoxy. #HateLovesAbortion
Can I go to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle House here in Los Angeles (Obama visited the Pasadena branch) and have some chicken and waffles without being accused of cultural appropriation? Probably not--and while I like fried chicken, I don't eat it with waffles and syrup. Biscuits and sausage gravy is more my cultural heritage.
Didn't the people in Yugoslavia attempt to preserve their cultural heritages? How'd that work out for them?

Co-opting the universal sign of surrender probably won't send the message you're trying to promote there.
The other way, from H.L. Mencken: “Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.”
There are times when this quote resonates with me.
A black field... hole... whore h/t NAACP. Sure, why not. A destructive phenomenon.
The Rainbow in human context is a symbol of violent depravity.
When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’
’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.
Semantic games. Sex and gender controversy. Transgender spectrum. Sat on a wall.
… the only person who knew how to make a blouse was an 87 year old woman …
Seven or so years ago I happened to be in Romania. As one will.
This headline could have been written as “The Only Person Left in Her Village was an Eighty-Seven Year Old Woman”
Romania was hit particularly hard with the Commie stick.
When the wall fell, all the women with prospects — pretty, pronounced chesticles, morally flexible — left.
The rest apparently weren’t so hot on their child bearing prospects.
It is quite the treat to go through villages where the houses that aren’t collapsing on themselves are being held up by trees.
With a little effort one can find Domnesti, a village northeast of Bucharest, on Google maps and tour around in street view.
It's not so bad, considering.
Do not google the children in orphanages during the Romanian Commie hell. Sad the corrupt powers that be want to return to that hell.
In the sixties in America a woman wearing an embroidered peasant style blouse was definitely a lefty who listened to folk music.

When I was a kid in the early 70s and went to the Oktoberfest in Cincinnati, most people wore contemporary clothing. But there were a few men in their 40s to 50s who would wear the traditional Tracht - Lederhosen for men (and Drindl for the women). You know what those guys were doing in their late teens to late 20s? Killing fuckin’ Nazis in Europe.
If you’re interested enough in Trachten to spend 25 minutes to learn how to do it right, here’s a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br69qM03SQU
If it belongs to everyone, it's not appropriation. The real situation is that the Europhile Globalists have rejected their culture but think they can say who get to accept it.
This is the kind of question that leads to the remark that America is hard to find. In 16th century England they passed a law against fashion because, they said, people were constantly buying new fashions which caused tailors to be stuck with unsold, unfashionable clothes. ( The law had no effect.) And people in the USA are still maintaining The Great Tradition of Churn and continually changing the clothes they wear in order to be in fashion. Moreover, that includes the subset that does not change with The Fashion but rather according to anti-fashion which is a sort of fashion which even intermittently becomes The Fashion by having its clothes such as the Tubercular T-shirt look adopted. Life, Love and What I Wore* sums it up.
A play by Nora Ehphron - not as good as the title.
Approved cultural appropriation and we'll have a gay old time pethaps on the Isle of Lesbos. Transtastic.
A codpiece. I have many guy friends. Why don't we hang out more?
40 years ago this trend morphed into college girls using paint and glitter on t-shirts. Today it is bedazzling among those same girls, now elderly women, and their offspring. 300 years ago it was beads on the mocassins and leather dresses. In another 25 years it may be holographic displays over naked breasts. Pity I won't be here for that.
