"Gator grabbed her out of the canoe. He tried to fight the gator off. We're at the last place he saw her. He left the paddle here where he last saw her at."

Said the cop quoted in "Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida: 'He tried to fight the gator off'" (CBS News).

Drifting and canoeing down waterways here is extremely popular but there are ALWAYS gators and personally I don't see the attraction of trying to "enjoy nature" such as the hot springs and Crystal River while also being inches from death from a 300-pound predator lurking just out of view.

That being said, my first reaction to this story might have something to do with too many hours spent watching the ID channel. It really is a near-perfect set-up for homicidal spouses of any sex.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

Alligators rarely do this sort of thing. They don't "Grab people out of canoes". I wonder if she tossed it some food, or stupidly guided the canoe to the gator and held out some food, like it was a pet bird.

Anyway, too bad. A bad way to die.

…I’ll wait for the rest of the story…There’s video of the last high profile lady death by alligator in my town. She was absent-minded walking the dog right next to the water and talking into her phone, oblivious as per usual. The alligator looked like a torpedo coming for the dog. It’s always the dog they’re after. She was between the two and was upended into the water…women seem to love to be scared of alligators. There’s a market for a channel with gator death porn for women…then there’s the couple that put a hunkin deposit on my neighbor’s house for sale then withdrew because the wife discovered there are alligators here. Sorry, non-refundable…

To tell if there are gators in any Florida body of water larger than a small puddle, stick your hand in it.

Is it wet?

If yes it probably has alligators

Mating season. I wouldn't go out on a canoe or kayak right now, for sure not on a big lake.

That said, it's an unimaginable tragedy. I've canoed a lot with my wife, something like this would destroy me.

I am trying to imagine a gator doing this. Maybe it would grab her hand, if her hand were in the water, and drag her in.

Me, too. They don’t really leap up out of water like a fish or stingray. I suppose it could upset a canoe with people in it what were freaking out and adding instability.

Had a big gator off my dock this morning on the St Johns River. Up in Rice Creek there are some big bad boys. Neighborhood words of wisdom a human fed gator is a dead gator. They lose their fear of humans and somebody had to kill them. That said, a Gators fave snack is a Labrador in your back yard. A gator can scale a chain link fence faster than you can.

I think we covered this a few days ago. I don't go into inland lakes in Florida. That's what you do in Michigan. Or Wisconsin. Or pretty much any other state, but not here in Florida.

You DO go into the Gulf (on my side of the state). The Gulf is beautiful- warm, calm, no gators. An occasional shark, but it's rare.

This is CBS News bro. They were typing up Texas Air National Guard memos in Microsoft Word and trying to pass them off as 1970s Army memos. All in an effort to rig our elections.

Recently, they got caught editing out an answer during a Kamala Harris interview and editing in the answer to a completely different question. All in an effort to rig our elections.

Nobody should be clicking on anything CBS News produces or watching their "news." It's all fake.

Years ago a honeymoon couple rented a kayak for a trip off the beach in Hawaii. They got caught in an unexpected current and pushed out to sea. A wind came up and tipped over the kayak. While struggling to right and climb back into said kayak a shark attacked the bride and bit off her arm. The groom removed the drawstring from his trunks and made a makeshift tourniquet to staunch the bleeding. However his beloved died from shock and blood loss. At some point during the night she slipped from his arms and was lost at sea. A day later he and the kayak washed up on another island and he gave a tearful interview about the tragedy. Three days later his late wife washed up on another island.
With both arms!
Shortly after the announcement her body had been located, the groom boarded a plane and left the country.
Not sure if he was ever caught and extradited.

I live in North Alabama. When I was a kid, we often swam in the Tennessee river. Today, there are gators in it. Granted, there’s far fewer here than in Florida, but they’re here. In some parts of the state, we also have bull sharks, which can live in fresh or salt water. My swimming is limited to our neighborhood pool these days.

Wince કહ્યું...

We're at the last place he saw her. He left the paddle here where he last saw her at.

Reminds me of the Captain Jack episode of Leave It to Beaver.

I'd want to get a good look at the man. How hard did he fight? How does he need to look before he's free of suspicion?

How hard would you fight an alligator if it had a hold on your wife? At what point would you think, she's lost and I need to get to shore?

Johnula કહ્યું...

I spend a fair amount of time in Florida, both on land and on water. That includes kayaking on inland lakes. Alligators are literally *everywhere*, and your little lizard brain stem is acutely aware of the threat, although attacks are so rare as to be essentially non-existent. Mating season is a different story, though -- these things are protective, and I've been "warned" away from a nest and it (not quite literally) scared the crap out of me.

We are still the apex predator, though, and if you're so inclined, you can order Gator Tail in most beach restaurants.

I have a policy: I don't eat them, they don't eat me.

Don't let the manatees fool you though. They're bloodthirsty bastards and would kill you and everyone you love given the chance. The only difference between them and gators is manatees will still be completely adorable while shredding you.

@Temujin - I wonder about the Gulf. When we were birding in Texas at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, there were alligators in that brackish water. I fear they are everywhere and no where is safe for our dog.

I just heard on the radio about a guy who swam to the middle of a lake to rescue a bald eagle that was flailing, and when he got it out they took it to a vet who said it appeared to be a gator bite. Lake is known for a seven-footer that lurks there. Not sure if its a Florida Man story a Proud American story or both. His wife filmed it all so footage should surface.

When the gator starts doing the death spin and diving. That means he's about to stash her under something on the bottom and come back to see if the other treat is still available. Nature is cruelly neutral too.

Fair enough. It was simply the first nearby river that came to mind but to be fair, my brother and his wife do Kayak there to hang with the manatees.

If she was pulled in I would instinctively dive in. The gator would have to choose.

CJinPA કહ્યું...

Paddle in the water, her hand was on the paddle. That's close enough to grab her arm and pull her in.

I almost hope the husband actually killed her first and she was dead before gator. Bless her soul.

Jamie કહ્યું...

Oooh-kay, so I will not be swimming in Lake Conroe this summer (or ever again). Texas Parks and Wildlife reports that there have been zero confirmed alligator attacks on Conroe, but... that water is murky as hell!

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

How hard would i fight? Depends on how much insurance money was at stake.

Seriously, how do you "Fight" an alligator? Hit 'em between the eyes? Do a Tarzan death roll? I've read you can clamp down their jaws because their jaw muscles used to OPEN them are weak. All the muscles are built for clamping down.

However, you have the matter of the tail, which is their main weapon and quite deadly - in the water.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

If you hit a croc or gate with paddle in the head would it even feel it? They seem well protected? But maybe underneath that scaley exterior is a sensitive soul.

Could be like the book double indemnity. The first thing I thought when there was a married couple in the middle of nowhere and the wife disappears and the story is such that there will never be a body for the police to find is if this is real or funny business. If in a month, he has a new boat and a stripper girlfriend I lean toward funny business.

Probably converted to Judaism. Alligators are not kosher so he would probably only be kosher if he converted. If it is a male alligator hopefully the mohel Still has the other hand so he can still work.

For a few years, my mother would swim laps (between anchored Clorox bottles) in the lake where our house was, in Lake County, FL. Most of the time she had her Dalmatian dog swimming along with her. One day, the dog yipped, and she didn't see him again for the rest of that swim, or thereafter. A few days later, half of the dog floated into shore. Our nearest neighbor, across the lake, a former sheriff, shot and skinned the 12-foot gator who was likely responsible, but that wasn't enough assurance to get my mom back in the water. She bought a stationary bike for her exercise, after that. Florida waterways are FULL of those reptiles!

As a kid, I bumped into a large snapping turtle while swimming in a lake at a Scout camp in NJ. I don't know who fled the scene faster - me or the turtle - but I've had a healthy respect for aquatic reptiles ever since.

Side notes: I later worked on the nature staff at that Scout camp, and we'd routinely see snapping turtles in the 16-20" range. Impressive creatures up close. We had a skeletonized carapace in our exhibit that was 21" long, which was considered quite large for the species. A generation earlier, when my dad was a kid and the area I grew up in was much more rural, he would catch snapping turtles nearby. He said they made an excellent soup.
