"... if he didn’t bed the model in question — didn’t have much care for their wellbeing.... In Florence... there is a growing debate about the exploitative nature of the relationship between artist and model.... 'Economically, the government has abandoned us,' Antonella Migliorini, a veteran life model at the Accademia with more than 30 years’ experience, told The Times. 'It’s as if we don’t exist.'... She said that some of the Accademia’s ten models were like athletes capable of holding complex poses with twisted torsos and arms intertwined above their heads...."
From "Florence’s life models threaten nude strike over poor working conditions/Models at the famed Accademia claim the poor pay and physicality of the job is pushing the centuries-old tradition to the brink" (London Times).

When your form/musculature is the only thing to focus on, then yes, your personhood isn't a factor at all. I suspect in 5 years AI will replace you; Find other work.
You'd think that Florence would protect their life models even if it's only to preserve a reputation as a world-class art city.
Men in women's spaces, faces. Progress. Deja vu.
She looks excellent for 61. Excellent for any age, actually.
If the choice is between paying models more or accommodating more art students, you know the decision will be made to have more students. The more there are, the higher the chances one will become well-known and that will reflect well on the Accademia.
I'm pretty sure that Lucian Freud had sex with more of his models than Picasso did. Maybe that's what the oysters were for.
So, Pablo Picasso was, in fact, called an asshole?
So nude art models are underpaid in Italy, but we can't even defund NPR/PBS by 1%?
Nude, nude, nude, nude, nude incorporated. Everything is nude. Hugh Hefner was a pagan.
Don't worry Dearie - they're just helping you look like you're starved. Personally, I'd rather provide funding to nude models than NPR. Can they read the news?
I will fight for their right to pose in the nude as often as they like.
When the going gets weird, the weird go pro.
No, that quote doesn't really fit, but it's a good one.
I believe that in the internet era, there are lots of ways to monetize the kind of talents these models have.
@Jupiter. Nice reference. I was introduced to it by the Burning Sensations on the "Repo Man" soundtrack.
The government has no business in modeling beyond enforcement of laws that apply to all people.
The creation of art, for commercial purposes (advertising) or exhibiton of truth and beauty can be a rush or a crush for a model/actress or creator. Sometimes it's both.
I've worked in front of a camera a few times and behind one; many (mostly porfolio additions for auditions).
My son and daughter modeled commercially in high school (major brands - damn well-paying after-school work!). Some of my dearest friends have been models and one went behind the lens and became the photographer of choice for major brands, magazines and some of the world's most beautiful and well-known women.
Just getting naked is not modeling. A really good model is a co-creator of any image in which they appear.
Perhaps like with pilots and traffic controllers there needs to be an upper age limit for this physically taxing profession.
"She looks excellent for 61...." If she's like quite a lot of people that I've come across, her picture is not necessarily indicative of her age, at present.

As long as the light's still in your eye and the smile on your face, people don't much give a shit how many years are in your logbook. If it now takes a running start to leap tall buildings in a single bound, so what?
@NKP, so, nothing - I was slyly commenting on the habit some have, of using youthful pictures of themselves instead of contemporary ones. What you allude to is a more important thing than vanity.

With this one? Eww....

I know from experience that it can get pretty cold in those old stone buildings in Florence and Milan.
Aggie, I fully agree that use of not-so-current pictures is common. It's understandable but kinda sad.
People tend to value what is said by the appearance of the speaker/writer. I once watched a gritty Clint Eastwood movie in Brussels. Dialog was dubbed in French. Not the same.
As an insufferably vain seasoned citizen, I tend to date most photographs that I share. I still look decent at a distance and I would hate for someone to think I was faking it with a 20-year-old image. We all have our quirks :-)
