"It had some connection to
'hicksploitation' reality shows like 'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' and to series like 'Deadliest Catch' that celebrated people who worked with their hands. It also had the structure and beats of a mockumentary sitcom. Like 'Modern Family,' it often ended with voice-overs summing up the episode’s themes and lessons.... Like 'The Office,' it structured stories around staffers goofing around the warehouse and cooking up schemes like flooding the loading dock to create a duck pond. But there was a key difference.... It was about work, family and faith — a typical episode would close with a prayer over a meal.... 'Duck Dynasty' was affectionate for backwoods ways and tradition.... It gave the patriarch Phil plenty of airtime to sermonize about manhood and encourage his grandsons to marry 'a meek, gentle, kind-spirited country girl.'.... Phil’s opinions came out more blatantly and less telegenically, however, in
a 2013 GQ interview, in which he called gay sex a sin and insisted that southern Black farm laborers were happy in Jim Crow-era Louisiana. ... A&E
suspended him from the series. The punishment seemed, at the time, like the affirmation of a new cultural order.... The Trump 2016 campaign was in many ways a
successful appeal to voters like Phil Robertson, who believed that their views were being silenced, their icons canceled, their traditions trampled, their beliefs insulted.... [Trump] promised... to restore the rich and meaningful lifestyle of their ancestors...."

"'Duck Dynasty' Is Coming Back to a Changed America/The family reality comedy, being revived on A&E, was a lighthearted entertainment — that anticipated a decade’s worth of cultural politics." (NYT).
The article is about
the revival of the show. Phil Robertson does not appear in it, and, as we talked about
here, he died a few days ago.

“ who believed that their views were being silenced,” Conservative views *were* being silenced.
Phil’s opinions might be in the minority and unpopular, but they were opinions. As the Romans said, “There’s no disputing taste.”
Ivy League students can scream about killing Jews and, until recently, nothing happened to them.
One of the biggest mislabelings of our modern time: Reality Show.
Yes, I’m writing along the same points as Dave. It is a false premise to claim or insinuate Trump and his voters support every opinion of Phil Robertson. We don’t claim every Democrat wants to eliminate Judaism but we certainly could make the claim using NYT logic…
The comedy clips on YouTube of The Office best were Carell lecturing on the latest feminism awareness training. Pam and the other woman whoever she was were always uncomfortable with his mistakes.
The mistakes were the reality sneaking through.
Carell was best in Get Smart 2008 as the competent rookie disparaged by the experienced 99.
Lost Duck Brewing has a nice railcam at Ft Madison IA on the Mississippi and the trans continental mainline. Amtrak comes through twice a day, and is frequently bridged (bridge open) or has its station-boarding track blocked requiring fancy backing up. Alternative traditional values entertainment.
The NYT antisemitism is wanting to substitute the Palenstinian Holocaust card the the Jewish Holocaust card as a political advantage claim.
Neither one should have it. It drives every dispute down a path that can't be won, except that the left thinks victimhood always wins and it never does.
Phil Robertson is forced off a show about his own family but ordinary Americans only believe that their views are being silenced? The Twitter Files says that the Normals believe it because it’s true.
Revivals of hit reality shows never pop the way the original did. Queer Eye, What Not To Wear, Intervention, Hoarders -- they always come back lifeless.
"Antisemitism" as a term is kind of like "misogyny," let's not define it, because reasons, but we know it when we see it.
Many people who are branded misogynists love women very much, they just disagree with feminists on certain cultural and political issues. But this is reframed as "hating women."
No surprise that the NYT doesn’t understand what was appealing about Duck Dynasty.
The level of far-left propaganda in the NYT's is off the charts and affects (effects?) every type of article. Robertson believed "their views were being silenced, their icons canceled, their traditions trampled, their beliefs insulted" because that is reality!
You'll notice in the NYT's that no Democrat is objectively described as doing anything wrong. No its always framed as some Rightwinger or Republican "pouncing" or "beilieving" they did something wrong.
Nor are there any objective downsides to massive immigration, discrimination against whites, or globalism. No, there are just "Beliefs" by rightwingers or whites or native born americans that there are.
Furthermore, crime is not a problem. The problem is people complaining about crime.
As Duck Dynasty, I watched one show and realized it wasn't for me. Like 99 percent of TV, it bored me. But if others liked it, God Bless.
I teach in a rural North East Florida school system where many/most of the male students - Black, White, Brown and Asian students dress in Duck Dynasty type camouflage and baseball caps. The girls are anything but meek and the boys are good with that. Now that's a reality show. Sooooo different from job I officially "retired" from of teaching civics to refugees and Immigrants. Two reality shows in one professional career.
" It drives every dispute down a path that can't be won, except that the left thinks victimhood always wins and it never does."
Yeah, those poor leftists. Always gaining power, and using that power to enrich themselves and reshape society to their desires. Sad, how it ends for them.
I heard the Neil Young song the other day and it’s (in keeping with the theme of the post) god awful. He basically took the melody to “This Land Is Your Land” and word-vomited a bunch of stuff about Tesla = fascism and how China is beating us and general laments about the auto industry over it.. It feels contrived and forced, almost as if he felt like he had to rush something out. I actually like experimental, left- field, subversive Neil but it’s just a bad tune.
"The girls are anything but meek"
My wife is from a small, rural town in TN. Going just by the example of her nieces, meek is not the word I would use to describe them.
And neither is my wife.
I tried to watch Duck Dynasty, but it did not last. I think I understand what Phil meant regarding the type of woman he wanted his sons to marry. I might be there too.
"The girls are anything but meek"/"My wife is from a small, rural town in TN. Going just by the example of her nieces, meek is not the word I would use to describe them."
I suspect that, for Phil, the word "meek" connects to Jesus's "blessed are the meek." What kid of "meek" people was Jesus speaking of with great respect? There is a kind of strength and courage in gentleness and humility that might be quite excellent. Must everyone be loud and proud?
Also in the Bible: Moses is described as "very meek."
Look out, geezer, there's a juggernaut coming up the river…
The article recounts this guy being suspended from his own show due to expressing a disfavored opinion but then says people like him "believed" their views were being silenced--wherever would they have gotten that idea?? Nobody has a right to a TV show but it's equally true that removing him from the show he was on was in fact an attempt to "silence" his view being broadcast. That the author can't see that is darkly funny.
Remember what they did to Roseanne? Oh crap, here comes the MIB guys with that mind eraser!
Oh whoops - jinx to Dave Begley, Big Mike, Jaq, and RCOCEAN; sorry to be repetitive but obviously that juxtaposition stood out!
"Moses is described as 'very meek.'" So was the guy they did that "Terminal Man" experiment on because his wife claimed he was "scaring the children." At least that's how Michael Crichton, who actually met him, described him.
Not enough duck hunting.
“Who stepped on the duck!?”
"Must everyone be loud and proud?"
I believe you are correct regarding Robertson's definition of meek. And I'm not saying my wife and her nieces are "loud and proud." But they are not going to fail to stand up for what they think is right.
(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)
Numbers 12:3
Kind of amusing, since Moses was supposed to have written the first five books of the Bible.
Phil’s opinions came out more blatantly and less telegenically, however, in a 2013 GQ interview, in which he called gay sex a sin and insisted that southern Black farm laborers were happy in Jim Crow-era Louisiana.
The NYT lies. I know, shocker.
I used to visit a very progressive blog, Crooked Timber. After Robertson's show was reinstated — without apology — it put up a post essentially saying that of course Robertson would get reinstated, despite being a rabid racist and homophobe.
Cue 537 comment thread that amply demonstrates how nasty, thoughtless, ignorant and thoroughly dishonest progressives are. Among the worst are academics. Page search on [Hey Skipper] if you are curious.
Almost without exception, progressives restate what others say, rather than use direct quotes, just like the NYT did here.
Robertson, in his words:
I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash. We're going across the field…. They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, "I tell you what: These doggone white people" not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.
It may seem that the few progressives that come here are lame examples of the breed. They aren't, as that thread demonstrates.
I really enjoyed it for a couple of seasons, but then the story lines got a little too far-fetched.
The first of this type of show I remember seeing (and rather enjoying) was Family Plot about a funeral home.
You will notice that shows about people who work with their hands actually show people doing real work. Other shows suggest people have jobs, but they never get around to do them on camera.

I miss the brief time when this BLOG featured the ability to respond directly to comments. The strictly linear posting of comments amounts to a pretty useless filing system of opinions expressed. Just sayin'
My kids liked Duck Dynasty. I was skeptical, and then my daughter said "It's a family that actually loves each other and teases each other the way we do." So I watched it and was pleasantly surprised. The three brothers tease each other as brothers do, the crazy old uncle has fun being the crazy old uncle, and Phil Robertson was the most benevolent "patriarch" you could imagine, as he never raised his voice to anyone, but he also never took any guff from those younger than him.
Phil's wife, the sweet and formidable Miss Kay, was only "meek" in the sense that she was never going to run down her husband publicly, be sarcastic, or look down on him, but she was obviously strong, nobody's fool, and the person in the family that no one ever wanted to disappoint.
It was a good show, and since no one has ever been able to dig up any horrible dirt on the Robertsons, I assume they actually are the good people they seem to be.
P.S.: Phil Robertson played football at LSU and Terry Bradshaw was his backup QB when Bradshaw was a freshman!
Deadliest catch was great entertainment. I met the parents of one of the Emmy winning cinematographers.
meek doesn't equal weak. In a biblical context, "meek" signifies more than just gentle or mild; it represents strength under control, humility, and submissiveness to God's will. It's not about weakness or timidity, but rather a strong, confident spirit that is humble and willing to learn from others and accept God's authority.

I disagree. Nesting of posts results in comment section that is unreadable. It also allows bores and dullards to get into an endless tit-for-tat that highlights their comments, and makes the others hard to find - or read.
OTOH, if all the bores and dullards get into an endless tit-for-tat, they don’t clutter the higher quality comments. Hardly makes anything difficult to find - or read.
Most BLOGS allow direct reply to comments. Our Hostess, being a long-time educator (and legal professional) may have a bias re. keeping the class on the subject presented. That’s legit (and obviously preferred by many/most) but I find “discussion” more interesting and informative. Not a deal-killer, either way, for me :-)
