That's from New York Magazine, which has a sarcastic headline — "Michelle and Barack Obama Are Dating Again" — because it's pushing back on the New York Post article that's titled "Barack and Michelle Obama spotted on swanky date night in NYC as divorce rumors swirl."
Repeated insistence... sounds like protesting too much.
And is it really true that if she and Barack were breaking up she's be out in public, problem-solving, dishing on what he did? I'd like to think she would not, but it was only 5 days ago that I was blogging "Why are men's podcasts so different from women's...?" after Danica Patrick went on "The Sage Steele Show" and trashed Aaron Rodgers: "Everything was torn to bits. He leaves a trail of blood." And she put it in terms of female empowerment, claiming "the greatest gift of how much I needed to show up for myself and take care of myself."
That sounds a lot like Michelle Obama's idea that she is "not a martyr" and would therefore publicly pick Barack Obama apart. But she calls it "problem-solving in public" — putting a sunny spin on gossiping and violating the privacy of the marriage you share. It's just making me skeptical about something I wouldn't otherwise even be thinking about.
When do people say if that were true I'd be talking about it? I think it's probably right before they have to talk about it. And, by the way, she IS talking about it. Stop talking about it!

Obama's political appeal is founded upon the widespread acceptance of the idea that the only thing wrong with Black culture is white racism. While I do not subscribe to that belief, neither do I think that a few anodyne words from one or both Obamas are going to fix what's wrong with black people.
If Michelle has any actual friends, they should tell her to stop talking in public about her marital problems and obvious depression. Maybe she needs to talk to someone, but not air it out in public. She just seems like a pathetic and pitiful character.
Achilles makes a fair point about her lack of serious accomplishments. Last year she talked about her low grade depression. While I am not a psychologist or therapist, it's easy to piece together a diagnosis of imposter syndrome. Everybody and all their second cousins in the Democratic Party have been calling for her to save the USA from Trump by running for President.
Obviously, she knows she's grossly unqualified and has wisely refused to throw her bonnet into the octagon. Now that that OceanGate level of pressure has been lifted from her suspiciously broad and thick shoulders, she is now comfortable to come out of the pantry and play the approachable empty nest matriarch on friendly podcasts.

This was an interesting question. Assuming they are seeking publicity, and it has nothing to do with their marriage, I would assume it is about maintaining their power and influence in the Democratic party and it's attached businesses and social circles. There is a power vacuum in the Democratic party now and there is in effect a cold civil war going on. There was recently a lengthy article explaining how the Obamas had lost their shine. This a different wing of the Democratic party trying to diminish the power of the Obama wing. Even if Michelle has no intention of running for office, higher or otherwise, their social standing, influence, and financial opportunities are directly tied to their perceived power within the Democratic party.
She'a a routine older woman. After menopause, the romantic spark and twinkle disappears from many women. They shift to gardening, or art, or cats, or cooking, some other interest, or happily live a single life.
Michelle never came across as charming, compassionate, or kind either. [Insert angry black woman stereotypes here.]

My wife insists on watching the “Bachelor(ette)” series on ABC. I’ll let it play in the background while I read things on the internet. One thing I’ve picked up from the show about relationships is you know there are problems when the discussion is about the past and not the future. If a couple is happy, they talk about what is ahead of them. If one or both are unhappy, they’ll talk about the past.
My wife and I just spent our 25th anniversary together in Hawaii. It was the trip of a lifetime that we hoped it would be. We will still talk about it with friends and family. But between the two of us, we talk about the next trip to come.

Progressive-democrat female friends worked with Michelle Obama when she was employed by Valerie Jarrett at Planning Dept in Chicago's City Hall, way-way before Obama became a media rock star. Plain-speaking, they disliked her, immensely. Too self-important, too snobbish, too lazy, too too too. Surprised me when they tell their stories. Obamas is a marriage of convenience, ala Clintons, complete with sordid backstories. Ugh. Both Clintons and Obamas have exhausted their Democratic audiences with their chicanery and petty lives.
It's a common human skill to come up with reasons for why you are doing what you are doing where the reasons you offer sound very plausible, even if they are false. Most people are good at that. This is the second time in recent memory where Michelle Obama offered a line of reasoning that doesn't sound even remotely plausible ("I didn't go to the Trump inaug because nothing to wear" and "You can tell I'm not getting divorced because if I were I would be ripping my soon-to-be-ex to shreds in public and since I am not doing that, clearly I am not getting divorced".).
I know that "dating" is one of those last resort things that couples who are drifting apart try. I don't know anything about the marriage under discussion though, just my two cents.

One of the ways I judge people is to note if they are better parents than their own parents. And it’s more difficult to be a better parent if you’ve had shitty parents yourself. Barack Obama had a very chaotic childhood and he made sure his own children had a stable environment to grow up in. That’s a huge mark in his favor in my book. When Michelle Obama mentions her girls she is very supportive. That’s the important part. Their marriage is no one else’s business but their own. Best of luck to both of them no matter what path they choose in the future.
