The current 747 used for AF2 was once a foreign-owned 747. Several of the other large jets in Federal inventory used for State and DOD were acquired from foreign owners. Further, the dangers of operating decades old aircraft necessarily place operational limits on what is allowable/recommended in terms of flight maneuvers...such as potential evasive maneuvers.
Further, newer aviation assets are designed from the ground up to more effectively integrate and make use of the latest and greatest technology in the most effective ways.
But those are all reasons the pro-assassination crowd doesn't want Trump to have aircraft like that at his disposal.

The last 747-8 ever made was delivered in Jan 2023, over 2 years ago. The cost of a 747-8, brand new, was about $420 million. Brand new. The cost of a used 747 ranges downward to as little as $10 million. The Qatari jet in question has been decommissioned after being used by its government and is no longer operated by the Qataris. I guess that wasn't obvious from the reporting, was it?
"According to ch-aviation, the aircraft in question is just over 13 years old, having first flown in March of 2012. It was delivered to the Qatar Amiri Flight a month later under the registration A7-HJA, and remained operational in this role for more than a decade. During this time, it was re-registered as A7-HBJ in July of 2015, before, in December 2023, taking on the registration P4-HBJ as it transferred to Global Jet."
Global Jet is based in the Isle of Man, but the aircraft has apparently been sitting in Palm Beach for a while, and I've read that it has about 1,000 hours of flight time.
And apparently nobody, absolutely nobody, is bothered by Boeing's deal-making. They got hold of 2 used 747-8 planes from a bankrupt Russian firm, Transaero: "...Both planes, which first flew in 2016, have logged fewer than 20 hours in the air and have been at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio since 2019 for conversion....." On 1 August 2022, L3Harris won the contract to build 75 OA-1K Skyraider II. They delivered the first mission ready aircraft last month, within 3 years of getting the contract. The Skyraider II is a modified AirTractor design, but each will be a brand new aircraft.
In 2016, Boeing won a contract to build 2 747-800 to replace the over 20-year-old Air Force One aircraft. The 747 production line closed in 2022, but Trump renegotiated the contract in 2018 to allow Boeing to use 2 already built aircraft. Now Boeing is saying they might not have the planes ready until after 2030. The current aircraft will be over 40 years old. 7 years, and Boeing can't deliver 2 aircraft that were already built with modifications.

My skepticism that the refurbishment will actually be completed before the Boeing refurbishments feeds into my belief that Trump wants this for 2029 more than 2025.

If Boeing had met its contractual obligations we wouldn't need this jet. My understanding is that when the President goes anywhere in Air Force One, the second one follows along as a backup. When Joe Biden launched his aerial armada on the Bay Area 18 months or so ago, both VC 25s (Air Force One when the President is on it) and a half dozen or so C17s came along carrying staff, presidential limousines, secret service vehicles etc. If the Air Force or whoever is setting up transportation requirements for the Imperial Presidency says it takes two VC 25s--one for the President and one for a spare--to taka trip, what happens when one of the two old VC25s is in shop? So you need a third plane--and the Qatari 747makes number three.

First off. The will belong to the military. The current two AF1s are over 40 years old and in dire need of a complete rebuild. It does say a lot for the 747 platform. They are extremely rugged, reliable and easy to fly.
Boeing delivery date for the 2 new 747s is sometime in 2029 or 2030, we'll see. What will happen is that this 747 will continue until the new ones are delivered. Which makes more sense. Then it will be donated to the Trump library.
I had never thought of this before but when the country is run by a scammer and federal law enforcement is a cross between the keystone cops and the Gestapo, it really is a scammer's paradise out there.
