Said Steve Wilson, quoted in "He’s a Foe of D.E.I. in Schools but Not a Fan of Trump’s Crusade/Steven Wilson was forced out of the charter school network he started for an essay that conflicted with antiracism initiatives. Five years later, he feels both vindicated and dismayed" (NYT).
Wilson got "canceled" in 2019:
Schools and nonprofit organizations had seemed to convert overnight to the teachings of the authors Ibram X. Kendi, Robin DiAngelo and their emphasis on antiracist education. In the wave of all this, Mr. Wilson had posted a long essay... blam[ing] both progressives and conservatives for the disappearance of intellectual rigor in the country’s public school system. Rich academic study was under attack from the left “as ‘whiteness’”... Shortly after, a member of his staff circulated a petition calling out Mr. Wilson’s thinking as an example of “white supremacist rhetoric.”... And now he has written a book... argu[ing] that antiracist education failed students in terms of achievement. At one school that implemented the programming, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards on the math section of the SAT plummeted from 41 percent in 2017 to 4 percent in 2024.

In his interview he comments on the high staff turnover at charter schools, which was also the case at the Chan-Zuckerberg school.

The biggest problem with the whole DEI initiative was that it emphatically was not about promoting other cultures, it was solely about cancelling whites.
"But life is so unfair by not providing me with perfect allies" , said the chronic whiner, who loves his enemies.
Could it be more pathetic? Here's a guy that was cancelled, ground up by the shrill, screaming maw of DEI culture both professionally and socially, and yet he's upset that Trump is at last putting an end to it at an institutional level, because he thinks we ought to discuss it. Suicidal empathy, reigning supreme.
The obligatory “no fan of Trump” BS. Regardless of how well-motivated people are or how poorly they have been treated they are constrained to maintain TDS ties to the destabilizers.
And now he has written a book... argu[ing] that antiracist education failed students in terms of achievement.
That's because "anti-racism" is about excusing failure, not about encouraging achievement of anything of value
Diversitists are a colored, bigoted artifact of liberal culture that wields progressive principles. Lose your religion. #HateLovesAbortion
"He’s a Foe of D.E.I. in Schools but Not a Fan of Trump’s Crusade"
So he's a loser who wants to whine, but doesn't actually want to make the world a better place.
DEI is institutional, systemic Diversity (i.e. color judgment, class bigotry). That said, diversity of individuals, minority of one.
Just stuff it in the back... black hole... whore h/t NAACP and don't come back no more, Jack.
How can anyone have any doubt that left-wing Jacobinism has fully supplanted the place of religion in some peoples' lives? Hair-shirt environmentalism, deviant sexual practices and identities, and racial scab-picking in particular.
The utter failure to teach reading and math - especially to the disadvantaged - should lead to wholesale massive change in our education system. Instead they focus on DEI and supremacy. Tar and feathers needed.
Don't listen to what people say, observe what they do. What is the public education system doing to the non-elite children. Not teaching them to read, write, and do math. One might think that is their purpose. It might as well be.
Schools and nonprofit organizations had seemed to convert overnight to the teachings of the authors Ibram X. Kendi, Robin DiAngelo and their emphasis on antiracist education.
NYT needs to buy more quote marks. They seem to run out when it's time to present words such as "antiracist."
The fact that they are writing an article about the decline in DEI means there is disagreement over whether the approach is "antiracist" or "racist."
"At one school that implemented the programming, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards on the math section of the SAT plummeted from 41 percent in 2017 to 4 percent in 2024."
I suspect there's more to that story.
Also, never trust a dude in a tunic ... or a turtleneck.
As a 50 year classroom veteran teacher the one thing lacking in modern education - especially in elementary schools are rote memorization and then drill and kill. Example by way of Geography. I had my students memorize every continent, ocean, gulf, sea, strait, mountain chain, desert lake, river, country, major city, capitals, language, etc, so.on and so forth. We would constantly rehash this memorized and rote information. Then we practiced spelling everything we said. Weekly, etc. To this day I have 55 year old ex 4th grade students who tell me they still remember all of it and that it has served them well. This as opposed to modern curriculum that posits a 10 year old child should know none of that but instead the diversity of sub Saharan tribes and their relationships with colonial powers that kept them in colonized bondage and economic slavery. It doesn't work.to stand up and call it the bullshit it is. Because, "You be racist" and will be ignored and marked for future disciple.

Discipline not disciple. Is it just me that I find it incredibly difficult to comment on Althouse due the tiny, nay ultra tiny space to type on my phone? I'm a 72 year old person and feel I should be catered to in my willingness to partake in these threads and conversations. Truly, a more congenial area to respond in would be not only nice but appropriate for the age group I perceived most of us to be in. But it's late in the day, I've missed my nap and feel the onset of crankiness.
Heartless Aztec: It's possible to get a full-sized Bluetooth keyboard that connects to your phone to bypass that ridiculous tiny screen keyboard. They cost less than $20 and can be purchased on the Althouse Amazon link.
"I think of the [antiracist] programming as a kind of secular religion, a progressive penitence."
And that’s why it doesn’t belong in schools. Schools are to educate kids, not “program” them. They can pick up antiracism or Scientology or whatever on their own.
Poor Trump. Even when he does what some elitist wants, he does it the wrong way. Sad how one man, either does the right thing the wrong way, or is just plain wrong, 100 percent of the time.

I know that in my case, it's not the tiny keyboard so much as the tiny comment area that leads to my frequent typos. I could solve this problem by using my computer, like an animal, but... why else do I carry this phone around?
DEi is just anti-white. In most colleges you can be punished for putting up a poster that says "Its OK to be white". Its considered "hate Speech".
I have found that conservative or vigorously neutral educators universally value, perpetuate, and produce better-educated students and more constructive life-choices. This guy is just trying to have it both ways.
Don't worry, Heartless Aztec. I too have trouble "typing small." Other kinks with my eyes and i-pad and this platform are maddening -- additional punctuation added by my computer after a quote; spelling and grammatical errors inserted after I write, and, especially, the need to constantly scroll back after a line-break. I take these problems to be unavoidable features hard-wired by programmers who didn't have you as a teacher.
“I know that in my case, it's not the tiny keyboard so much as the tiny comment area that leads to my frequent typos. I could solve this problem by using my computer, like an animal, but... why else do I carry this phone around?”
Because in most places it is now illegal to walk around without holding a phone in front of your face.
I didn't even know I'd been canceled. Have you guys missed me?
So the choice is raise your child to only hate Whites, but be dumb as a stump, or leave racism up to the culture and have a well educated kid. Seems pretty easy to me, but I don' like sitting on fences. You just never feel comfortable.
Heartless, Tina:
Really it's the fault of the mighty GOOG; they have essentially been trying to kill off blogger by malign neglect -- starting since the moment they bought it two decades ago. Imagine what it would be like with 20 plus years of serious, well thought out development.
It's a small point, but there is no such thing as meeting or exceeding standards on the SAT so the reporter has no idea what she's talking about. Alternatively , she is trying to avoid saying that the scores weren't very high to begin with and dropped even more.
For other than a line or two, I like to compose my comments using Evernote, then paste the result into Blogger to post. (That also prevents Blogger from arbitrarily obliterating your post.)
Nice finally to read that someone has called out the insidious plot by groceries to enforce white supremacy culture. Miles and miles of white bread and mayonnaise, as far as the eye can see.
