My guess is, they had composing toilets as part of their eco scheme, or some other such nonsense - maybe a zero footprint type thing. One of the Rockefellers was promoting the Clivus Multrum, a (Swedish) composting toilet. It worked (I guess) but you couldn't put water into it (at least for the early models) and you had to be a Rockefeller to afford one. 50 years on and the Clivus still hasn't caught on.
