BBC: "Zelensky tells BBC Ukraine 'ready to sign' minerals deal with US"

The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg has quizzed Zelensky about the future of the agreement...

Zelensky answers saying the minerals deal is ready for [the] minister to sign. “It is our policy to continue what happened in the past, we’re constructive,” he continues, “if we agreed to sign the minerals deal, we’re ready to sign it.”

“The agreement that’s on the table will be signed if the parties are ready,” he concludes.

Remember Michael in The Godfather? "This is what I am offering you, nothing!" That is what Trump is offering Zelensky on the mineral deal. Zelensky came up with the idea of the mineral deal, but he was demanding that we agree to fight Russia, it was conceived as a bribe to get Trump to commit US soldiers to Zelensky's war. Trump is saying, give us the minerals, and let us worry about how we handle Russia, then we can all make bank. "Don't you tell us how to handle Russia!" Remember how mad Trump got when Zelensky did his veiled threat that the US would have to fight Russia in North America if we didn't go along with his plan to defeat Russia militarily? Basically he said, "stay out of it pipsqueak."

The Ukrainians have a vital interest in the Donbass area and the port city of Mariupol because the Donbass is the Ukraine's manufacturing area and Mariupol is the port for the Donbass. We know how bad giving up our manufacturing to the Chinese was for the MidWest and it will be the same for the Ukraine. But that doesn't mean it can't happen or shouldn't happen. Suppose that Ukraine can't hold the Donbass without getting US troops in? which might cause WWW III. Zelensky won't look at that. But Trump must.
And, why can't the Ukraine do it? Has it misspent the billions we sent? Wrong tactics? A picture of an atrocity won't answer these questions. Will our guys become subject to atrocities because Zelensky doesn't care about our guys, only his people? Only Ukrainians matter? Well, perhaps, if you are a Ukrainian leader of a Ukrainian army. But what about coalition partners? don't you have to care about them if you want a coalition? You want Repulicans to go fight in the Ukraine although you disrespected their leader? Really?

Lent begins Wednesday - time for my 40-day moratorium on commenting! I'm also finishing the last couple of episodes of Dexter, as it seems a not-Lenten kind of thing to watch. Houston Rodeo starts Tuesday, also rather non-Lenten but at least not focused on gruesome murder.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

"Is this true?"

True-ish. The facts aren't nearly so stark. Lira was arrested for the crime of questioning the Zelensky viewpoint of the current Russia-Ukraine war and later convicted. He was released on parole and tried to return to the United States, which the Zelensky government considered a parole violation. Lira was consequently re-arrested and imprisoned, an unfriendly and decidedly unintelligent abuse of Ukraine's most valuable foreign relationship. Later on, he died of pneumonia, and not torture.

If Zelensky was half as smart as Donald Trump, he would have been happy to see Gonzalo Lira escape home. It would have dispensed with serious political embarrassment and an alleged "pro-Russian" propaganda problem within his borders in a single stroke. But no, true to his Alfred E. Neuman diplomatic principles, Zelensky couldn't be bothered to show a little trepidation in holding an American citizen in prison for committing the First Amendment. That is the behavior expected of an autocratic hermit kingdom like North Korea, not a pluralistic state trying to impress American citizens with its dedication to the ideals of Washington and Jefferson.

Zelensky is Ukraine's Joe Biden. He's a fuck-up. Get rid of him. Give him a satchel full of Ben Franklins, and maroon him on a Caribbean island. Then the killing and dying will stop.

Gonzalo Lira was arrested for "questioning the Zelensky viewpoint of the current Russia-Ukraine war" and committed what "the Zelensky government considered a parole violation"? That's a very tendentious way to put it.

Wikipedia says the "heavily pro-Russian content [of his coverage of the war] praised Russian military actions, denied Russian attacks on civilians, and doxxed Western journalists. His content, which has been described as Russian propaganda and disinformation, was amplified on social media by Kremlin-linked accounts and praised by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova". Ukrainian law enforcement said that he "also shared pro-Russian disinformation such as claiming the Bucha massacre was faked or that the Ukrainian government was a Neo-Nazi regime, and that Lira had shared video of himself insulting Ukrainian soldiers". That's not just disagreeing with Zelenskyy's personal opinion, that's actively working for the other side and telling bald-faced lies.

And he was released from jail into house arrest. Trying to leave the country when you've been ordered not to is not just an "alleged" violation of the conditions of parole, but an obvious one.

As for dying of pneumonia in jail, he was 55, in poor health from (I've read elsewhere) years of heavy smoking, obesity, and (allegedly) STDs. Ukrainians jails are no doubt colder than they ought to be in winter, for the same reason that Ukrainian apartments are: the Russians keep bombing the electrical plants, cutting off the power over and over again. Unfortunate, and unpleasant, like most causes of death, but neither murder nor torture.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

"That's not just disagreeing with Zelenskyy's personal opinion, that's actively working for the other side and telling bald-faced lies."

And that an extremely tendentious way to describe Lira's use of his Constitutional rights. If Weevil thinks Lira's writings are bald-faced, let him prove it. Otherwise most here will treat that overwrought hyperbole as more Weevil-effluent.

Granted, Ukraine isn't obliged to respect an American's inalienable right to free expression, but the smart move would have been to deport Lira to the United States rather than imprison him. No reasonably intelligent national leader at war would forego the option of deportation given his utter dependence on foreign charity.

No one commenting here knows the circumstances of Gonzalo Lira's death -- not I, not Jupiter, and not Dr. Weevil. However, I will note that his fatal illness could well be COVID-related. Millions have died from COVID-related pneumonia despite the best medical treatment available. Without specific and proven facts to the contrary, no one can in good conscience can accuse Zelensky's regime of malicious neglect. It's quite possible Lira received the best medical treatment Ukraine could afford and nevertheless died. It happens inevitably. However, the salient fact remains. Gonzalo Lira died in Ukrainian state custody, which is stupid and shameful given the logical and politically intelligent alternative -- deportation.

Sam grew tired of his friends expecting him to pay for dinner—every single time

They often complained about the food

They never said “thank you,” even after flippantly telling the waiter when the bill came “Uncle Sam’s got this one,” just as they had done on every previous occasion

One day, a thought occurred to Sam: he had other friends and didn’t need to spend so much of his time and money with Brittany, Frank, Dutch, Germaine, and the other members of their decades-old dinner club

He didn’t need their rudeness, presumptuousness, or fickle demands

He had other relationships with friends who lived closer to him, and with whom he had far more in common

Sam was much happier from that day forward as he spent more time with friends who respected him—beyond just seeing him as a giant piggy bank to fund their dinner outings

The theaters are dying a long, slow death.

Also, Sony has quit making DVD players. DVDs are dying too.

It's entirely possible that we will have a future where our cinematic art will be determined by what Amazon and Netflix think we should see. And we will own nothing.

Good luck finding Hitchcock or Ford or Kurosawa on the streamers. I'm not optimistic about the future of cinema.

Greta Gerwig, who was the head of the jury in France, says the movie owes a debt to the screwballs of yore, Howard Hawks and Lubitsch. Dude! I'm in!

Baker, who did more winning at the precursors, used his acceptance speeches to hammer home a specific message about the importance of the theatrical window, a theme he reiterated on Oscar night

If I can find it in a theater, I'm going.

The man Ukraine accused of treason died innocently of COVID. This is as good as the one where the Russian secret service killed the daughter of that Russian journalist who also happened to be on the kill list of the Ukrainians. I'm rather late to this party, and perhaps my comment will go unnoticed, but I learned from, of all places, The Grauniad, that the EU has paid Russia about Twenty Billion Euros for natural gas since the Russo-Ukraine War began. That's far less than the EU "gave" (or loaned, depending on who you believe) to Ukraine in the same period. None of this makes any sense.

Jaq म्हणाले...

The reason the UE has bought so much Russia gas is that they don't have any alternative. They picked an economic war with Russia that they were doomed to lose, and lose it they have. China is happy to buy all of the gas Russia wants to sell them. Russia now sells them the cheap gas that it used to sell to Europe. Europe's economy is in the crapper now, not just because of the lack of energy, but the lack of feed stocks for their chemical industry. Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) is twice as expensive as what they were getting from Russia before Ukraine attacked a NATO country's infrastructure, Nordstream, and ruined that NATO country's economy, Germany. Yesterday Ukraine tried to knock out the energy infrastructure of another NATO country, two, actually, Hungary and Turkey. Last week, Ukraine attacked US owned energy infrastructure in Russia.

Oh, and The Guardian is now just one more intelligence community (neocon-neolib) newsletter, like the Washington Post and the New York Times. There are interesting articles about how it was taken over by MI6, if you want to read them.

Jaq म्हणाले...

It actually makes perfect sense in the real world where pipelines are filled by drilling wells, not by capturing unicorn farts.

Jaq म्हणाले...

You gotta remember too what the war is about. Denying ethnic Russians who fell under the rule of Kiev at the fall of the USSR the ability to conduct their affairs in Russian, as they and their ancestors have done historically going back centuries, or forcing them to live under laws written in Ukrainian, enforced by Ukrainian policemen, and adjudicated by Ukrainian judges. Oh and forcing them to split from their Russian friends and family over what was, up until 1992, and in practical terms, up to 2014 when we overthrew the Ukrainian government, a non border.
