"Russian special forces have hiked through nine miles of gas pipeline to ambush Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region..."

"... as Moscow claims it retook three new settlements from Kyiv on Sunday. The Kremlin fighters allegedly spent days hiding inside a gas pipeline connecting Russia to Europe before emerging late Saturday to attack Ukrainian soldiers stationed near the border city of Sudzha, according to Russian bloggers on Telegram.... Sudzha, which had about 5,000 residents before the war began, remains one of the key cities Ukraine managed to take during its surprise counter-invasion last year in Kursk, with the conquered cities constituting a major bargaining chip against the Russian invaders...."

The NY Post reports.

ADDED: For the annals of Things I Asked Grok: "What are some movies or books where a military attack is made after marching through a pipeline?" And then, noting this NY Post report, "Do you think that really happened?

That's the second time Russia has done that. It didn't work the second time.

I feel the same way about this war as I do about some sporting events. I hope they both lose.

Aggie म्हणाले...

That's quite a story. I wonder about its accuracy, though. I don't know of many gas pipelines big enough to 'hike' through. It's hard to 'hike' when you're on your belly, crawling, and normally gas pipelines are full of natural gas, and pressurized. Eagerly awaiting more information on this one.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

Yes, the phrase "Hiked through" is very odd. I suspect it was more like crawled through. The pipelines are usually 4 feet wide. They could have used gas masks to get through the pipeline.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

The big story is that the Russian may encircle thousands of Ukraine troops unless Kiev get outs now. In this case, the "walls" really are "Closing in".

Maybe Putin wants to take some land he can give back as part of a peace settlement, while keeping the other stuff he already had.

Interesting as UA says they ambushed the Russians comming out of the pipe. There is video footage of russians walking (hunched over) inside a pipe. UA says it's recovered footage from casualties.

Wince म्हणाले...

Hunter Biden proved you could succeed in Ukraine while on the pipe.

Aggie म्हणाले...

The pipeline appears from other accounts to be a 60" line. I'm pretty confident they didn't hike 9 miles through a line wearing gas masks. It would be very difficult to de-pressurize and evacuate the natural gas, and air it up with breathable atmosphere for multi-mile length surreptitiously, without someone becoming aware. The logistics of this still doesn't add up. I think it's more likely they infiltrated and possibly used a spur or something as a hideout, once they got there.

Same way they captured Avdeyeivka (sp?) Ukes are losing their ability to manage this war. It doesn't matter exactly how they did it. The Soviets built this infrastructure, and the Russians have all of the plans, and BTW, this was done in Russia, so that goes double for this pipeline.

As for gas in the pipeline. Ukraine ended the contract for flow of gas in the pipeline about a month ago. So they evacuated the gas themselves.

edutcher म्हणाले...

Any good spec ops out fit could do the same, be it the Brandenburg Regiment or the Ranger Regiment.

Zelenskyy screwed his country to the wall with his performance in DC and the Demos can only say throw more money at the problem. Putin sees a chance to wrap this up and he's going for it.

I guess all the Euros want another Italian Campaign. I suggest we refrain.

Peachy म्हणाले...

The left should be happy. They want this war to never end.

Jaq म्हणाले...

"Interesting as UA says they ambushed the Russians coming out of the pipe."

They say a lot of things. Most of them are lies. But even the Ukrainians are admitting that their position has fallen apart. I think of the story of the Japanese man who lived on the home island during WWII and said that he knew that Japan was losing the war because each "glorious victory" was closer to Japan.

Jaq म्हणाले...

If they had really ambushed the Russians coming out of the pipe, it would have been a Sgt York stye turkey shoot until the opening got clogged with bodies. Ukrainians are liars. Ukraine and UK propaganda has been the most unreliable source of information in the whole war. If you follow people who look at both Ukrainian and Russian Telegram, that is reports from the front line, this has been coming for weeks.

The first invasion of Kursk was widely viewed as a Russian trap by commentators. It has cost Ukraine dearly in men and materiel they could have used to defend their own land, and the only rational purpose for invading Kursk would have been to capture the Kursk nuclear power plant, which would have given them a solid bargaining chip. When they failed, they should have withdrawn, and instead Zelensky threw more and more men and armor at a losing fight.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Where do you get your propagan... err, I mean information?

With crisscrossing laser-beam tripwire alarms, don't forget those.

Hollywood really sucks donkey dicks, don't they? When was the last time something truly innovative and unexpected came from them?

Maybe the Pacific Palisades fire will be the final straw on the back of the Hollywood camel.

Unironically true.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

Zelenskyy sent a big FU to Trump, to his face, on international TV. Putin chose a more subtle way to send a big FU, using his Spetsnaz troops. I still hope Trump is able to end the war, but it doesn’t appear that either side truly wants peace.

Lazarus म्हणाले...

"Marching" is ambiguous. Troops going anywhere on foot "march," but in this case they probably aren't "marching" in the more limited sense of moving in a coordinated stride and rhythm. That would probably be awkward and attract too much attention. Iask.ai says:

The Living Daylights (1987)
In this James Bond film, there is a scene where KGB agents use a gas pipeline as a means to smuggle a defector out of the Soviet Union. The pipeline serves as an underground route, showcasing the strategic use of such infrastructure for covert operations.

Tunnels, sewers, air ducts, mine shafts and other confined passages play a big role in action movies and television series. How many times has someone in a movie or TV series hidden in a suspended ceiling or used it as a passage without falling through the rather flimsy panels?

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

“ Ukraine ended the contract for flow of gas in the pipeline about a month ago. So they evacuated the gas themselves.”

No matter when the gas transport was stopped, a pipeline is a class 1 confined space and does not contain a breathable atmosphere. You don’t want air in a pipeline because it creates corrosion due to oxygen. Guessing, You would need a 150 hp fan every .5 miles to ventilate a pipeline for human use.

So the Russians would have to march using self contained breathing units, like firemen, and nine miles of marching would take a lot of o2 bottles. I think the Russians may have ducked into the pipeline briefly to hide, but the long march is bs.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Peace means that the US troops leave Europe. Europe doesn't want that. Nobody in Europe in a position to know believes that Putin is a threat to Poland even.

Putin's actual words are censored in the US, or we would know that he has wanted a deal since the start, but each month that Ukraine fights, the deal gets worse for Ukraine. No way that Russia wants to occupy western Ukraine, but they will, if the West makes that the least bad option for Russia, which we might, if we are going to continue our efforts to collapse Russia using Ukrainians as expendable pawns.

We already made invading Ukraine the least bad option for Putin by overthrowing the government in Kiev in 2014, and trying to bring Ukraine into NATO and using the weapons that Russia gifted to Ukraine at its creation to kill the Russians still living there, so making Russia occupy western Ukraine would just be a continuation of the strategy to extend Russia until it collapses. Zelensky is all on board with this "Sum of All Fears" strategy, and so are the people in the neonazi organizations like Right Sector and The Azov Brigade, who are keeping him in power.

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

For example, the Gaza terror tunnels required air shafts and fans to allow human occupancy, and this was one of their vulnerabilities.

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

I recall an old made for tv movie with Rock Hudson as president, where the Russians invaded Alaska with tracked vehicles and put a bomb and soldiers in the hollow steel ball used to clean the line by being blown back and forth, called a pig. They were going to destroy America by stopping Alaskan oil delivery. Modern enviros would have supported the Russians. (America won due to a small Alaskan ANG unit training I. The area.)

OldManRick म्हणाले...

One of the tactics the Russians used in Stalingrad was travel through the sewers to move behind enemy lines, evade capture, and infiltrate buildings and strategic locations. It was shorter distances but a similar concept that worked well for them and later for the Germans. Underground warfare is not unique - see Gaza.

Achilles म्हणाले...

Navigating a pipeline like this for 9 miles would take too long on foot. I am pretty sure you would need a gas mask and oxygen tanks to move through an airtight tunnel that long. That is a lot of weight along with added equipment. 100 pounds is doable until you can't stand up straight. Moving hunched over with 100 pounds of gear isn't realistic. We would have used carts or recumbents.

Mostly though no "Elite" Unit is going to brag about they did something. They may brag about they did. They will never brag about how.

It appears that within 24 hours of this exploit, Ukraine lost a third of the Russian territory they were holding before it happened. Apparently the appearance of these soldiers at their rear created panic and collapse in their defensive lines, same as happened in Afdeyevka, and supposedly, Chasiv Yar, where this same exploit was used. I'm sure they used vehicles of some kind. This attack has probably been in the planning phase ever since the Ukrainians shut off the gas to the pipeline to punish Russia, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Candide म्हणाले...

Good point about gas still possibly present in closed pipeline. Pressure equipment out of operation is normally filled with some inert gas to prevent corrosion.

JaimeRoberto म्हणाले...

Pretty badass if true, but I don't know what I don't know about pipelines, so I can't judge the veracity.

So it was right out of a combat video game, Chechens vs Nazis. It seems like a lot of Russian special forces are Chechens. Chechnya figured out that US neocons played them into getting into a war against Russia that served US neocons' plans and unleashed hell on their cities. Now they are maybe more loyal to Russia than ethnic Russians. Makes you wonder how Ukrainians are going to feel in a decade about what is going on there now.

The pipeline is in Russia, and completely under Russian control Russia no longer cares about the pipelines connected to it in Ukraine, and in fact have been attacking them with bombs and missiles, so they would likely have no problem compromising standards for preservation of the equipment.

Candide म्हणाले...

Inert gas is no problem. Typically inert gas is pumped in at pressure slightly higher than atmospheric to push out other gaseous compounds and then sealed inside. Once the seal is broken light inert gas rushes out and heavier regular air rushes in.
