Asked what was the "best moment" of Trump's speech, 2 of the NYT's 9 opinion writers said it was Al Green disrupting the session.

I'm reading the NYT analysis of Trump's big speech: "'It Was 90-Plus Minutes of Bad Moments': 9 Opinion Writers on Trump’s Address to Congress."

From the "Best Moment" section of the article:
Binyamin Appelbaum Representative Al Green’s stand in defiance of a president who has governed in defiance of the law. Green’s civil disobedience was the behavior of a man who believes that Trump is a threat to American democracy. Why did he stand alone?...

Michelle Goldberg Green’s heckling. Democrats shouldn’t have shown up at all, but if they were going to be there, noisy protest made more sense than holding up dumb little paddles. There’s nothing dignified about quietly playing the foil to an autocratic thug gloating about stripping America for parts....

Meanwhile, at home, I was comparing the scene to January 6th. You don't like what's going on in the Capitol? Disrupt! Try to stop the proceedings!

Aggie বলেছেন...

Al Green's performance clarified something for me. I've always suspected that he's not terribly bright, and that there are plenty of rather dull people in DC that have managed to secure office and actually hold it for a while. There seem to be more on one side of the aisle than the other. And that side of the aisle also commands a stellar record of obedience to the cause when it comes to taking votes, in both halls of Congress. Could it be that this exercise in the domination of wills, when it comes to voting, is actually limiting their candidates to those that are willing to obey? And those that are the most willing, are the least able to think for themselves, or even think, period? Both parties exercise control over the candidates from the primaries, onward. They are selective on who gets to run. Maybe the Democrats strategy of iron-fisted command has resulted in too many lesser Indians, when they ought to be fielding a quorum of chiefs. There's a downside to recruiting people that are compliant.

Quaestor বলেছেন...

"A deliberate effort to evoke the caning of Charles Sumner?"

No, instinctive. Homo democraticus has devolved into a lower order of life -- something akin to Pan troglodytes on bath salts.

I watched on C-Span which didn't switch to the Dem side very often. But I saw that as Trump began his speech, Rep. Greene began his disruption which was immediately handled. Green was ejected and the speech went on. Then I saw those foolish little paddles. C-Span didn't keep cutting to them but I imagined themwhen Trump was looking in that direction. Then C-Span would occasionally cut to individual, despondent Dems hunched up like birds in the snow compared with Melania smiling away. Mainly I followed the points Trump was making in order to see what was coming but, as always with Trump, the whole time period held my attention in various ways. The valiant little fellow who beat cancer and dreams of defending us all; the shining smile of the returned prisoner; the unspeakable sadness of the relatives of people abused and murdered by illegals; the glowering Dems; the Dem recruits on our side looking serious and resolute. Trump trying to lure in the Greenlanders; getting back the Panama Canal; obviously hoping to grab Russia as an ally; Mars is Ours (maybe) as whatever another planet might be good for. The notification that prices are going to go up before they go down but we might get fentanyl stopped. It has been killing hundreds of thousands over the last three years, a little gift from China by way of Canada. The return of Zelensky.

The "Best moment" that never actually happened was when Al Green re-enacted the historic moment in 1856 when pro-slavery Democrat Preston Brooks attacked Senator Charles Sumner with a cane putting him out of action for a year or so.

Al Green was waving that cane around like he was going to try to bop President Trump. I was reallyt hoping he would try and of course be stopped by Secret Service.

Think what great TV that would have made!

What happened to Al Green anyway? I used to like the way he sang but now he just seems like another loon.

It was a session of Congress, Al Green is a member of Congress and had every right to be there, he was engaged in activity protected under the speech and debate clause of the Constitution

If you are going to make statements like this, then at least know what it is you are talking. US Constitution, Article I, Section 5, Paragraph 2: “Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a Member.

If you won’t follow the rules, expect to be punished. President Trump was recognized by the chair as the speaker. Al Green was told to maintain decorum. Green failed. Green was punished per the rules of the House.

Quaestor বলেছেন...

Aggie writes, "They are selective on who gets to run."

Selection, that's the engine of de-evolution, the reduction not to the mean, but to the stupid end of the bell curve.

There's never been a more popular Presidential Address to Congress since FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech. Historians will christen last night "The Suicide of the Democratic Party".

The Democrats, the party of the "peculiar institution" and Jim Crow, survived the Civil War because the Stephen Douglas wing rejected Bully Brooks and his crew of thugs, but there's no patriotism or decency left in that band of shit-brains holding office in 2025. They're dead now and stinking to high heaven. Good riddance. There may be the makings of a decent and honorable loyal opposition somewhere in America, but I can't see one, which is sad and troubling; the Ship of State always needs a little ballast.

John henry বলেছেন...

The other event that didn't happen was with all those Demmies holding up paddles like they were at an auction.

I kept hoping our president would riff on that. Maybe "Our Democrat colleagues apparently think they are bidding at an auction with those paddles. Sorry to disappoint but nothing is for sale tonight."

He could do a lot better than me, of course.

Looking at the photo of Al Green with his cane and his mouth wide open, it does look like he's singing something, sort of like his namesake. Adam Schiff's and Ed Markey's disembodied heads are floating in front of Green in the photo, with Markey looking a little Sumneresque himself.

Why do African American reps always lead the way with impeachment efforts and antics like Green's? Is that really what their constituents want? Are they trying to make up for their deficiencies and misdeeds in other matters? Are they so secure in their seats -- or so expendable to the leadership -- that they are given the job by the higher-ups?

In the 2019 white State of the Union Democrat Reps were stretching their arms out in what looks a lot like a Nazi salutes. The explanation for one photo is that they were holding up three fingers in reference to House Resolution 3, but were they really unaware of the symbolism?

All of a sudden, we're told that the president's first message to Congress isn't a State of the Union address. That's the first I've heard of that. The State of the Union (or whatever this was) has become the new "nerd prom" with all of the attendant antics. Trump put the White House Correspondents Dinner, the original nerd prom, out of business by not attending. Maybe it's time to go back to Thomas Jefferson's practice of sending Congress the annual message in a letter, rather than in person.
