Writes Trump on Truth Social, here.
This is also Trump on Truth Social: "DOGE: Why was Politico paid Millions of Dollars for NOTHING. Buying the press??? PAY BACK THE MONEY TO THE TAXPAYERS! How much has the Failing New York Times paid? Is this the money that is keeping it open??? THEY ARE BUYING THE PRESS!"
Is he saying there's an obligation to give back the money, that it was fraudulently obtained? Perhaps it's more of an appeal to give the money back as a gift, now that the taxpayers are seeing what happened and disapproving.
Trump doesn't take much care with these "truths" — that's what the press secretary calls them, "truths." He wrote "How much has the Failing New York Times paid?" when he must mean "How much has the Failing New York Times been paid?" He took the trouble to add "Failing" (idiosyncratically capitalized), but he omitted a word and left the meaning reversed.

We hold these truths to be self evident: that all lefties will receive equity.
Trump is meant to be taken seriously, not literally.
Fact checking requires facts.
Can't have that.
How about - REPAY THE AMERICAN TAX PAYER, NOW!
Any facts that make Soviet-Democrats look bad - will be called "mis- information"
and "without evidence!" Right on Q - by the Soviet-Democratics and their religious cult loyalists.
This is a Watergate-level scandal. The Press is mentioned in the First Amendment. It has a constitutional duty to inform the public about the works of the government and to be cruelly neutral in its reporting. The Press has totally failed. It has been bought off by one side. The Press has less than zero credibility. Even Fox isn't reporting this like it should.
People and organizations generally know which side of their bread is buttered. I suspect all the press groups who have received Federal money from some shadowy nook or cranny of the Federal bureaucracy know which party they need to keep happy to keep the funding secure.
NYT paid for privilege. AP, too. Was it free or a gift on the order of trillions of dollars in forward-looking debt? This goes to the Democratic dark dinero that has steered the American Republic with emanations from the penumbra of the Constitution and a black hole... whore h/t NAACP.
I don't agree that leaving out the word "been" was necessarily inadvertent. How much HAS the NYT paid to get taxpayer money, paid, that is, in fawning favorable coverage of the Democrats and demented over-the-top fake coverage of Trump and the Republicans? How much did they give to get what they got? What was the bargained for exchange??
HORRORS!!! The Pesident of the United States has been 'spell-checked'. Why, it's almost like changing the subject...
Reuters has not yet responded to Trump's attack. You would think that what with their thorough studies of large scale social deceptions, they would have a powerful and immediate rejoinder to this attack. Perhaps if we fund them with another ten million or so, they can come up with a persuasive argument for why they need more money for their continuing studies of large scale social deceptions.
It has a constitutional duty to inform the public about the works of the government and to be cruelly neutral in its reporting.
Really?! Where in the constitution do you find this?
Dave Begley " It has a constitutional duty to inform the public about the works of the government and to be cruelly neutral in its reporting. " No, they don't. They are free to do whatever they want. The government, on the other hand, has a constitutional duty to leave them alone. And paying them for favorable coverage is just as bad as censoring them.
Why did Pelosi repeal —she calls it modernize, The Smith-Mundt Act which was expressly passed to prevent the US from going down the propaganda path that Germany and Italy did. Remember that before Hitler, Germany was a liberal democracy.
Name another business or profession that's named in the Constitution. Only the Press is. And the Press is giving the freedom from government control because the Press is supposed to inform the public about what the government is doing.
It's a penumbra.
"Fact checking requires facts."
Was the New York Times, Politico, Reuters, the AP, btw, The Bulwark, etc, etc, etc paid millions of dollars from USAID, which was administered by Biden appointee, who was not confirmed by Congress and who refused to respond to questions from Congress, Biden's "hatchet man" Samantha Power or not, Mark?
Looks like the MSM can't survive without corrupt gov't funding. Ratings and subscriptions aren't enough to keep them floating. Nobody is buying their bullshit lies and propaganda anymore.
"The Press" is not mentioned in the first amendment. Freedom of the press refers to every citizens' right to publish their views, i.e., access to printing presses. In the Spanish colonies, for instance, often the only printing press in a city would be government controlled and privately-owned printing presses were illegal. "The Press," or sometimes the "Fourth Estate," is a self-aggrandizing formulation by newspapers that is about 100 year old.
Lay out your proof for that, Jaq. Not just with graphics, but a clear paper trail.
Begley is right.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; .
If you give a presidential appointee like Samantha Power a hand on the money tap that these outlets have come to depend on for survival, you have abridged their freedom. It's right there in the Constitution.
Notice anything else there in the Constitution, it has to do with the establishment of religion, USAID was paying hundreds of millions to "ministries" to ferry migrants into the US. One "minister" complained that he would have to shut down his "ministry" now that the USAID funding has been cut off.
That case is even plainer than the Reuters one.
"Lay out your proof for that, Jaq. Not just with graphics, but a clear paper trail."
Well, I don't have subpoena power, but if that's your defense of USAID, time will tell, won't it.
I guess what I am saying is that we now have the lefty Mark on record as admitting that if this turns out to be true, it's bad. Time will tell.
Trump is not the best speaker or writer. But I do not care. He is the right man for the job - and it is very clear he learned his lessons from 2016 and on. You don't mess with the corrupt left- you F the corrupt left.
Luke 19:5-8
When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
He wrote "How much has the Failing New York Times paid?" when he must mean "How much has the Failing New York Times been paid?"
Or both, if it was a quid pro quo for the NYT's favorable slant.
True, our President could use a dedicated close reader. Unless he's just baiting the toffs and otherwise overeducated.
It does keep one wondering, doesn't it?
"Lay out your proof for that, Jaq. Not just with graphics, but a clear paper trail."
This is why Jill and Joe Biden controlled twenty shell corporations which seem mostly designed to shift payments around and for which he never released the tax returns.
The fungus evolved with fungible payments and threatens bio.... democratic diversity through climate change in a closed and exclusive environment. The power of the press, perchance to publish, is the People's right assumed by the Fourth Estate in collusion with special and peculiar interests.
Well, first I would note (sadly) that Trump is at the very least, as accurate as the named media organizations. But there is a reason that it is no longer good practice for a company to contract for service the consulting arm of its statutory auditor. If the "press" wants to continue to deem themselves the fourth estate - the watchdogs and guardians of the republic - the trusted source for news - then they shouldn't be taking any funds from the governments they are supposed be watching.
The very morning of the day that Matt Taibbi was scheduled to testify to Congress, armed IRS agents showed up at is house.
But sure, that's not the same thing as "making a law" in fact very few laws actually governed USAID in any real way, so I guess it didn't violate the Constitution.
I've seen a video of Trump being shown a ridiculous parody video of his opposition, and he says something like, "Post it. Immediately." I take this as evidence the Donald does not waste his time with typing and uploading his own submissions on Truth Social, but rather lets his team do that for him. I bet the same holds for everyone from dementia Joe to AOC to Elon. Although I bet Elon and AOC both know how, and have done some uploads before gaining such status that the interns could handle it. Just sayin', don't overthink a capitalized F. Pause over it for some hot Cofveve, perhaps. Could be purposefully idiomatic, could be a quick upload without any review. God, Althouse and anyone reading the comments her knows my own contributions sometimes read like a GWBush strategerizing session because of lack of re-reading before pushing "PUBLISH." Those without similar sin may cast all the stones they want, of course, with my blessing.
cruelly neutral
I’ve read something like that before. Trying to remember where…
Americans understand when they are being ripped off.
100% all in for crushing out Bloat-ocracy, but TRSS is not TR. Not sure what that means as it relates to this matter, but we need clarity.
The really sad part of the story is that all these far left media outlets are more than happy to protect and promote Democrats for free. You might as well shovel all those taxpayer millions into a big pile and set it on fire.
Convinced me. I always depend on cartoonists to explain to me complex issues of the balance of powers.
Ad hominem attack. Clearly couldn't refute Scott Adams on the facts.
The government, on the other hand, has a constitutional duty to leave them alone. And paying them for favorable coverage is just as bad as censoring them.
I would think that if, say, Breitbart News applied for one of these subsidies and was turned down, they'd have a pretty strong case to sue the government for violation of their First Amendment rights. It may rise to the level of criminal conspiracy against rights. People who were censored by government pressure on media outlets, slandered by the Pravda press that were on the government payroll, or suffered harm due to unscientific, oppressive Covid-19 policies also have a good cause of action.
I hope Bondi and Patel examine the media and their co-conspirators in the civil service in colonoscopic detail. Subpoena every communication they've ever had with the government, followed by merciless punishment for anyone involved in a conspiracy to violate our civil rights.
It is very important that we follow the Alinsky rules, and cause real pain and suffering for individuals. It's not enough to close down a crooked NGO that will reopen the next day under another name, let alone pay out millions from the Treasury for the petty tyranny of individual leftist scum using their government jobs for political and financial gain. That is making the taxpayers fund their own oppression, and should not be legal.
Trump can and should refuse to grant qualified immunity to these scum, allowing their victims to sue them and take their homes and life savings. He should also work as hard as he can to strip them of their pensions. Criminal and civil cases should be brought in Wyoming and north Texas and other places where the victims of censorship and COVID tyranny reside, instead of facing a D.C. jury comprised entirely of other government scum and their cronies.
Exemplary, draconian punishment of the most egregiously criminal and oppressive government scum is necessary to frighten those who remain into doing their job diligently, and resisting the temptation to behave as taxpayer-funded activists for the Democrat Party.
Is "large scale social deception" the literal definition of "fake news"?
NYT paid in words so they can take them back?!!
"DOGE: Looks like a Nigerian Prince at Radical Left Reuters was paid $9,000,000 by the Department of Defense to study 'large scale social deception.'”
FIFY.
He wrote "How much has the Failing New York Times paid?" when he must mean "How much has the Failing New York Times been paid?"
He probably intended to write “was”, not “has”. Simple typo.
Wow, Begley drives off the rails, immediately starts digging a hole, and Jaq follows him right in!
As Milwaukee guy correctly notes, freedom of "the press" in the Constitution is simply metonomy for freedom to publish , and it applies every bit as much to the humblest lowly lone citizen as it does to the institutional press - - which did not in any way exist in our modern sense at the time of the founding. Then, "the press" was simply a guy who wrote and had a [flatbed] printing press, or hire the services of a guy who had a [flatbed] printing press.
Wow, Kirk. What an irrelevant point. So you are saying that the government may infringe on the freedom of web publishers, since they don't use ink, for example?
So you are saying that the US Government may dictate what a press outlet may and may not publish to the nth degree, as long as it is "free to publish" whatever that press outlet is told to publish?
"he really sad part of the story is that all these far left media outlets are more than happy to protect and promote Democrats for free."
Maybe, but that's not a viable business model for them. If they can't take money from the Democrats, they might have to start printing the news straight up, so that they double their potential readership, and well, that is not acceptable to them.
From "All the news that's fit to print" to "All the news we see fit to print" to "All the news that we are paid to print."
That's ironic, Mark. Coming from you.
First Amendment penumbras. I mean, what would have happened if the brave Woodward and Bernstein had not uncovered all of Nixon's bad deeds? Isn't the press supposed to be a "check" on the government.
When the OWH built its new building to hold its new expensive printing presses, it was called the Freedom Center. The OWH used to be great at covering local and state politics. Now it just covers sports and crime. Disaster!
'He wrote "How much has the Failing New York Times paid?" when he must mean "How much has the Failing New York Times been paid?"'
Perhaps he was talking about the quid pro quo side of the arrangement. They didn't get paid for nothing.
I suspect, but cannot prove, that some people are assigning a meaning to the word "press" that the writers of the Constitution did not intend. Sort of what some people do with "well-regulated" in a following amendment.
But that's just me.
It's rhetorical, and more or less emotive. If I see Samantha Power coming out of the bank again and tell her to give back the $30 million, I am not expressing a view of what her moral obligations and on what basis they are determined (or of how she got the money). I am just expressing my disapproval of her conduct. In Sam's defense, though, it does cost a lot of money to live around here.
