You're unlikely to get a response.

But the answer seems cut and dried to me. "They" would be the group who successfully strong-armed the University to remove a rock, because in their mind it was a racist rock. This same group was explicit in their goal to remove Lincoln as well, because he was a racist. Fortunately, Abe turned out to be a bridge too far.
