"Beyond the effect the pardons and commutations will have on the lives of those who received them, they also served Mr. Trump’s mission of rewriting the history of Jan. 6."

"Throughout his presidential campaign and after he won the election, he has tried repeatedly to play down the violent nature of the Capitol attack and reframe it, falsely, as a 'day of love.'... As a legal matter, the pardons and commutations effectively unwound the largest single criminal inquiry the Justice Department has undertaken in its 155-year history. They wiped away all of the charges that had already been brought and the sentences already handed down while also stopping any new cases from moving forward. Starting virtually from the moment the Capitol was breached, investigators spent more than four years obtaining warrants for thousands of cellphones and Google accounts, scrolling through tens of thousands of hours of police body-camera and surveillance camera footage, and running down hundreds of thousands of tips from ordinary citizens.... Mr. Trump appears to have decided to grant an expansive form of clemency relatively recently and after a debate among his advisers.... A few weeks ago, Vice President JD Vance said... 'If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned,' Mr. Vance said, but... Mr. Vance’s comments elicited almost immediate outrage among many of the rioters... ... Philip Anderson, who was accused of taking part in a violent scrum in a tunnel outside the Capitol, wrote on social media. 'All J6 defendants need to be saved.'..."

The Biden administration went big and then Trump went big. Biden could have shown mercy and aimed to bring Americans together, but he chose to be as punitive as possible. And this is after so much tolerance and forgiveness was shown to the Black Lives Matter rioters, to those crossing the border illegally, and to his political cronies and family matters. In that light, I have nothing negative to say about Trump's sweeping magnanimity.

This way, the NYTimes and other Democrat-supporting papers can ignore totally the corruption of the Biden Clan and lots of Democrats that necessitated all the pardons from Biden. Everybody wins!

RCOCEAN II said...

Well I have plenty to say. First we still have the murder of Ashli Babbitt that has gone unpunished. Not only did the DOJ not prosecute Lt Byrd for the killing, Pelosi gave him a medal.

Second, this isnt about "everyone being fair" its about the Democrats trying to use lawfare to destroy their opposition while letting their supporters burn and riot without punishment. The elephant in the room is the refusal of the Democrats, including the DNC media, to use the law and 2 standards of justice, to get their way. And punish their enemies.

But, I guess this will all be swept under the carpet, and we can all hug ourselves and chant "Move on.org" until 2029 when a new Democrat DoJ will start the same thing all over again.

Fauci’s pardon was not limited to nonviolent offenses. Maybe because manslaughter and second degree murder are violent offenses? How many were killed because of Fauci’s illegal gain of function research?

Imagine the outrage of the NYT if that level of police-state intrusion and overkill had been applied to the Floyd or Portland rioting. But it's those horrid Trump people, so CRUSH THEM AND THROW AWAY THE KEY!

The main lessons I learned from the BLM vs. J6 protests were: (1) don't bring a cell phone, and (2) wear a mask.

The Democrats turning a blind eye to BLM riots, turning a blind eye to the attacks on the SC justices, and assigning the short and tubby female Secret Service detail to Trump (the assassination photo) will be Democrats brand for a generation.

RCOCEAN II said...

That NYTs would continue to falsely assert that the J6 was "violent" and that Trump no basis for his assertions is just par for the course. WHen did the NYT's retract their statement that an officer was killed by a fire exstinguisher? Was it 3 months, or 6 months after they originally reported it? And repeated it?

Or when did they stop using the false and absurd word "Insurrection" to describe a protest/riot? Or stop falsely asserting that TRump "Incited" the riot?

RCOCEAN II said...

Something needs to be done about having Federal Trials in DC. Its obvious given the aquittals of several Democrats/Leftwing Bureaucrats and the 100 percent conviction rate of the j6ers, that Trump supporters and Republicans cannot get a fair trial there. Its 94 percent Democrat.

My view is that (supposedly) Biden pardoning the people behind the J6 witch hunt forced Trump’s hand here. He had been talking about only pardoning those convicted of non-violent crimes. But then Biden pardoned those, like Lt Byrd, likely guilty of violent crimes (there, the killing of Ashli Babbitt), and Trump was essentially forced to pardon those convicted of violent crimes - esp since he (and most of us) knew that most of the violence had been initiated by the Capital Police (along with AntiFA, FBI assets, etc).

I wonder if AOC still wants the Capitol Police investigated for complicity in the J6 riot. I'm not kidding. At one time she stated that she thinks it is suspicious that the police opened the doors for the "rioters" and just let them in. Perhaps someone took her aside and explained things to her.

Certainly, J6 was an ugly day by any measure, but it was preceded by an even uglier day in November when election irregularities went nuclear. And even an uglier day in March of 2020 when people rode roughshod over our civil liberties. I'm quite sick of hearing the fake news phonies lecture me about J6 when they turned a blind eye to ALL the corruption and malfeasance that preceded. There's a lot of housecleaning that needs to be done, from universities to newsrooms to federal agencies. But I won't sit on a hot stove waiting to see it happen.

Jupiter said...

Well, I'm wondering about that. Can the President pardon a murder? That is generally a State crime. Perhaps it's different in DC? But Babbitt's family can still sue that evil bastard, and I sincerely hope they will. Of course, the suit would have to be filed in DC. It would be like suing Sauron in Mordor.

Jupiter said...

We may assume that different members of the crowd had different motivations, and perhaps different agendas. But it is overwhelmingly clear that there was an organized conspiracy to use them to create a riot, by removing fences and signs around the Capitol, among other actions. It remains to be seen who the organizers were. I trust that Trump has assigned some people to find out.

For fifty years we on the right have been told we cannot punish leftwing rioters, because the First Amendment is so important that we cannot come within miles of *appearing* to punish speech. 1/n

Now we were always frustrated by this "rule," and we wouldn't have chosen this "rule" if anyone had asked us (and of course no one ever does), but we did accept, grudgingly, that this was the rule: Speech is so important we must tolerate some violent "speech." 2/n

We always doubted this "rule" would protect US if WE engaged in the violent "speech" favored by Democrat client groups, but until J6, we had no PROOF that the "rule" did not also protect us. 3/n

Then, of course, J6 happened and the left became the most bloodthirsty Jalvert-like hounds of merciless justice. They proved to us once and for all the "rule" we never agreed to wasn't even a "rule," but just another special privilege of Democrat ally-groups. 4/n

Please note:

Leftists constantly refer to J6 as an "insurrection" but none of the J6's were convicted or even tried for insurrection. They couldn't even put up a strong enough of an argument to get a DC judge and jury to consider insurrection. The Supreme Court also ruled that some of the charges brought against J6's were not valid; they were prosecutorial overreach. The hysteria from the left is based on their own rhetoric not the actual charges.

When you hear insurrection from someone, they are not describing what happened - they are gas lighting you to make you believe that that's what happened.

Over on Instapundit I’m reading that the DC MPD is refusing to release the people Trump pardoned. It’s not clear what grounds they think they have for continuing to hold the prisoners, but perhaps Trump needs to go on TV and advise the MPD that if they do not comply with his orders they will be arrested and prosecuted for kidnapping. Something along those lines.

I’m also reading about a J6 prisoner who has been held without trial for more than 4 years. Perhaps the judge in his case needs to be advised on the text of the Sixth Amendment? Or better yet, be advised that if said judge chooses not to believe in the Sixth Amendment maybe that judge needs to be sentenced while ignoring the Eighth.

Regarding the people not yet released: Trump only pardoned convicted defendants. That alone could take some time - jails often release the wrong guy when they are just doing onesie-twosies, let alone hundreds at once, so the jailers have to follow their processes.

Trump further directed that cases be dismissed for any pre-trial defendants, but that will take more time, both internally (getting AUSAs to write motions to dismiss) and externally (getting judges to approve the motions). I suppose if the career prosecutors and DC judges really drag their feet, he could do another pardon to speed it up. But he and the J6'ers probably don't want to be saddled with the nyah-nyah-a-pardon-is-an-admission-of-guilt crap if they don't have to.
