"Very clearly, companies are basically being hijacked to engines of social change, social revolution. The employee base is going feral. There were cases in the Trump era where multiple companies I know felt like they were hours away from full-blown violent riots on their own campuses by their own employees. Things got really aggressive during that period. And so I go from watching Brian Williams every night and just being lied to 500 nights in a row to, basically, reading the Mueller report, reading the Horowitz I.G. report and being like, 'Oh, my God, none of this is true.' And then you try to explain to people, 'This isn’t true.' And then they get really mad at you because how can you possibly have any sympathy for a fascist?"
Says Marc Andreessen, in "How Democrats Drove Silicon Valley Into Trump’s Arms/Marc Andreessen explains the newest faction of conservatism" (NYT)(free-access link, because there is a lot of great material in this interview, with Ross Douthat).

The left are lying liars who lie.
If you are still a loyal leftist - you approve of all the lies.
Wake up.
As an outside observer of the left, one has to wonder at their self-defined terminology, the one where you work out what they really mean by their actions and behaviors. It's been fairly obvious for most of my adult life that the left's definition of "far right" is clearly that which is sane and more-or-less on the side of normal American self-interest. That's what they fight against, and that's what they've defined as "evil".
Which makes it exquisitely easy to work out which side I'm on.
It's also really interesting to observe how few of them really recognize the reality of things, that they're going to be the very first ones up against the wall if their beloved eventualities ever come to fruition. They never seem to read histories very well, seeing only that which they want: Never noticing what happens to the Mensheviks or the Jacobin types who are at the forefront of the "Revolution", and manage to survive into the peace after, where they're inconvenient dupes.
I learned all I really needed to learn about the left after meeting the former VC leader, then boat person, then restaurant manager here in the US. He was viciously contemptuous of any and all on the left, having been through the wringer already. I don't think he'd be too happy to observe the current state of Vietnam, which is being recast as a Milei-esque capitalist paradise. When he died back in the '90s, it was already apparent that the Vietnamese Communist Party was about as "communist" as any other group of robber barons, and they were rapidly converting all the state assets they could into personal ones, taking part in the "liberalization" of the Vietnamese economy. The irony that they slaughtered millions to gain a socialist paradise and then abandon it for rank capitalism is something all the rocket scientists of the time failed to foresee. It was never about the betterment of the little people in Vietnam; it was all about the power. Always is.
Andreessen was the inspiration for the movie Coneheads.
Everyone should ... MUST... read this.
It's long - I'm still reading... It's very good. Very real.
And it makes sense since some of the leftists who post here - are tied to the same BS narratives. Even today!
"May of 2024. We couldn’t meet with Biden because, as it turns out, at the time, nobody could meet with Biden.
We were able to meet with senior staff. So we met with very senior people in the White House, in the inner core.
We basically relayed our concerns about A.I., and their response to us was, “Yes, the national agenda on A.I. We will implement it in the Biden administration and in the second term. We are going to make sure that A.I. is going to be a function of two or three large companies. We will directly regulate and control those companies. There will be no start-ups. This whole thing where you guys think you can just start companies and write code and release code on the internet — those days are over. That’s not happening.”
Holy crap.
When I call the left Soviet - I mean it.
Read it this morning and was waiting for the open thread to post a link, but you beat me to it. Definitely worth reading.
Oh cool, glad you read this Marc A. interview. Thought about pinging you about it, as I worked for the Andressen-Horowitz startup Loudcloud/Opsware circa 2001-2006. Interesting guys, and tho Marc was around much less than Ben Horowitz, they were both great guys, driven but still personable, then at least (no contact with either after my time there). And of course Ben’s dad David is quite well known in the political writer world.
"The E.U. is, as you know, regulating itself to death."
Again - this is what insane leftists do. It's universal.
end:
"And then maybe I’ll just give you one final thing: We need the censorship pressure to end. We need the debanking pressure to end. We need this kind of random terrorism coming out of the federal government to end. These agencies running wild. That stuff needs to be brought to heel. And the new administration has been very vocal about how they intend to fix all of that."
Read the whole interview. Enjoyed it. Very interesting. Read some of the NYT comments. Yikes.
I guess they didn’t start off reading the Steele Dossier and ask how anyone could believe it. I have never believed Putin wanted Trump over Hillary Clinton.
It's not a new faction of conservatism, but rather an old faction of liberalism.
“ Andreessen: So I would say both, and the unifying thread here is, I believe it’s the children of the elites. The most privileged people in society, the most successful, send their kids to the most politically radical institutions, which teach them how to be America-hating communists.”
I, too, read the whole thing. Super interesting. And the NYT comments are unhinged. We’ll never agree with those people.
You don't have to read it, and by the way, it's been 'lightly edited'. By the NYT. 'Nuff said about my 'trust' issues.
I recommend listening to it, instead, on Spotify or one of the other links provided. Listening now, at 1.7x
Aggie - Even Better.
Exactly. It's like a giant piece of the puzzle is solved.
But part of this story, the extraordinary meeting in the White House, was leaked a few weeks ago. Was that from this same interview?
Anyway, what a terribly intelligent and illuminating conversation.
Peter Robinson from the Hoover Institute also interviewed Andreessen recently.

Andreessen concedes Republicans were wrong about a few major things–eg. Iraq and gay marriage, he implies there were others but doesn’t offer other examples–but lost. And now the center left is more comfortable becoming the center right and supporting Trump:
“I’ll give you an example. Gay marriage 20 years ago was a very potent political issue in the Valley. But that issue is done, and now I have all these gay friends who are super pro-Trump, because that issue is done.”
“The other thing is the neocon thing. Like 20 years ago, Iraq was a giant motivating thing. The one thing we know — at least God willing, we’d hope that we know — is we’re not going to do that again. And it’s just no longer an issue.”
I guess I can see that. I, myself, was mad enough about Iraq to vote Kerry in ‘04, but went back to Republican in ‘08 and ‘12. But Trump sent me away from Republicans for president from ‘16 on.
And Trump is keeping from moving back to right even though I probably agree with tech types like Andreessen than the Democratic party. I guess I just worry about Trump more than he does.
Andreessen has become a believer in Trump’s leadership ability:
“[H]e’s extremely good at bringing together all the threads and then having it come out into the positions that he advocates to support.”
But the first term was a shit show. So maybe it’s less about Trump’s leadership ability and more about Andreessen’s optimism to the people Trump has surrounded himself with this time around:
“And if you look at the staffing that’s taking place, it’s a much better team the second time. It’s not even a critique of the people in the first term. It’s just that there’s a cohort of people who are ready to go who are experts in all these areas and who have lived through the last four years, and they’re all on board with the thing. They’re ready to go in and bring all of their expertise, and we could sit here, and we could probably name two dozen people who are at the deputy or assistant secretary level in these key agencies who are off-the-charts good.”
“And by the way, much better than the people that they’re replacing in virtually every case. They are as well positioned to take this thing over and run it as anything I’ve seen in my life. Obviously we’re very, very enthusiastically pulling for them.”
I dunno, man. I more of a *past behavior is often the best predictor of future behavior* type of guy. I think articles in 2026-27 about the divorce between Trump and his new tech friends is more likely than anything else. But best of luck to you all putting your faith in Trump. I hope it works out. I hope this is the dawn of something good. Color me skeptical.
I was just thinking about Al Gore the other day. How I actually considered voting for him over W. I ended up voting W. Gore was a nice guy - really.
Compared to today's Adam Schitt/Nancy Pelosi horrids. especially.
Wow, Ross barely let him get a word in edgewise.
It was less about Trump - and more about the authoritarian Soviet left.
Yikes
Right up there with the WaPo. It is scary that those lunatics are probably among our elites.
“There were cases in the Trump era where multiple companies I know felt like they were hours away from full-blown violent riots on their own campuses by their own employees.”
This isn’t true.
You know this? how?
The coalition Trump has formed won't last. It was a response to the dystopian nightmare the left had sought to impose, and it won't be long until all of that is forgotten.
They, tech moguls, are very fickle, and time will tell how it shakes out. Most of the tech guys have an AI fueled view of their own, and our, future. Most of the 'just leave us the fook alone' people won't like that future.
But it is obviously early days. Hope still drives most of us, and what comes next is usually a surprise.
I do agree with some of the commenters above, who mentioned the NYT readers comments. How the hell can we coexist with people who have such a radically different view of life?? In my own, admittedly small circle, I've given up trying to talk to leftists. There is no common ground, as there was in the past. They see America as a cancer, and those of us who believe the future will be better due to America as complete robots, russian trolls, etc.
Well, your proof is certainly impressive. Easily strong enough to override and dismiss the tech billionaire that is giving his experiences in a direct, in-person interview, as opposed to, say, an anonymous comment on the internet.
W was right to end the first Iraq war, sustained through Clinton, started with the invasion of Kuwait... Iraq in Kuwait. America in Serbia. And, of course, the Slavic Spring with a coup.
Yea, transgender marriage was established under the principle of political congruence: couplet "=" couple. With an albinophobic celebration on Obama's Whitehouse, in parades, and liberal bumpers. Wombs on farms, and sperm in banks. Very Pro-Choice. That said, civil unions for all consenting adults.
Then Democrats legalized all sexual orientations (e.g. pedophilia, incest, polygamy, sadomasochism, casting couches with "benefits", take a knee for her, too, etc.).
To their credit? They also made elective abortion, reproductive/human rites, planned parenthood, rhe wicked solution, a hate crime under Loving from conception.
Well, that was interesting. I'm just trying to take it all in.
but went back to Republican in ‘08 and ‘12. But Trump sent me away from Republicans for president from ‘16 on.
So you voted for McCain, Romney, HIllary, Biden and Harris.
Duly noted.
"So you voted for McCain, Romney, HIllary, Biden and Harris.
Duly noted."
Yes, I don’t post here often. I talked about it in a thread a few months ago, just before the election. I live in FL and voted for DeSantis for governor in ‘18 and ‘22. Nobody around here seemed to believe me, but it’s true. Other commenters accused me of concern trolling because I’m not on the far left yet think Trump is bad.
(For additional context, for president I voted 3rd party in ‘00 because I was naive in college, Kerry in ‘04 because of Iraq, against Trump because he is Trump. Maybe had he admitted he lost in ‘20, I’d have considered him in ‘24, but I still probably couldn’t have brought myself to vote for him.)
Live examples of this bit of Thomas Sowell wisdom
"It doesn't matter how smart you are unless you stop and think" - Thomas Sowell
To Think Trump would have sold off the uranium is a tell.
The syncopated anomalies in 2020 voting were convincing?
Sure. What we really needed was to elect Nikki Haley.
Wrong blog, Dude.
(Is that you, Chuck?)
Andreeson's Joe Rogan interview covered a lot of this--and was very good.
I’m really starting to like Andreesen. I can’t believe he was fooled by Brian Williams though
'The political dimension of it, overwhelmingly. I mean, it was just crystal clear. You can see it in the eyes. You can see it in the words. You can hear it in the words. You can see it in the behavior. We have a lot of Democratic friends of good standing who are major donors in both the Biden campaign and even the Kamala Harris campaign. They came back with the same reports. It’s completely consistent, which is that social media was a catastrophic mistake for political reasons.
'Because it is literally killing democracy and literally leading to the rearrival of Hitler. And A.I. is going to be even worse, and we need to take it right now. This is why I took you through the long preamble earlier, because at this point, we are no longer dealing with rational people. We’re no longer dealing with people we can deal with.
'And that’s the day we walked out and stood in the parking lot of the West Wing and took one look at each other, and we’re like, “Yep, we’re for Trump.”'
Team Biden did a great sales job. We are no longer dealing with people we can deal with.
A most enlightening interview. Thanks for sharing.
