"The Lives They Lived."

The NYT annual set of articles about those who have died in the past year is an inevitable choice for one of my 10 monthly gift links: here.

Dr. Ruth looks like Phil Donahue's mini-me or like his dwarf conjoined twin.

Wait a minute. Phil Donahue died?

I remember seeing Rosa the sea otter in Monterey. For me, having close experience with Mystic and the New England Aquariums, it was a bit disorienting to see Rosa’s sea otter exhibit in the aquarium, then walk out to the aquarium’s deck to watch identical looking sea otters playing, floating and holding hands in the seaweed in the harbor…

Always a gap between the second/third week in December (when these articles are composed), and year end. Die then, and you are forgotten.

It’s funny I was GOING TO post a comment I bet they honor the memory of Hamas or hezbollah terrorist leader that died and say nothing about the innocent hostages. I was pretty close though! Naturally “Palestinian” writing about the tragedy of Hamas agents killed. Oh sorry Al Jazeera journalists who are also Hamas agents. Oy vey

I asked the free ai story generator to write me an obituary of novelist Paul Auster in the style of novelist Paul Auster, but it seems to crank everything out in the same style.

Nice conclusion, though:

Paul Auster leaves behind a literary legacy that transcends the boundaries of genre. His voice will echo in the hearts of readers who found solace in his words, and in the minds of writers who continue to explore the labyrinthine nature of the human experience. He is survived by his wife, author Lydia Davis, and his children, as well as a constellation of readers and admirers who will carry his stories forward.

As we bid farewell to this literary luminary, we are reminded that in every ending lies the seed of a new beginning, a story waiting to unfold, much like the many lives Auster so masterfully chronicled. In the intricate dance of existence, where we are all but players on a stage, Paul Auster’s spirit will remain—a whisper in the wind, a flicker of light illuminating the paths we traverse.

Wrong wife, but pretty good conclusion -- for a robot anyway.

It didn't take long for Trump to appear in the comments. Christ, he lives in these Leftists' heads:

The country just elected a President who built his career on denying the truth, attacking any attacker and claiming victory no matter what. Why didn’t we support Pete Rose for his accomplishments on the baseball diamond?

They write that Willie Mays in his best year in the majors made $150,000. I'm glad Mays didn't live long enough to read of Soto's $750 million contract. It would have just killed him.

Famous Amos made more from his inspirational books about getting out of his financial problems with Famous Amos Cookies than he did with the cookies themselves. When God closes a door, he opens a Drive-Thru Window with Googie Trimmings.

Boesky, iirc, used his insider trading indictment as a means of insider trading. He made money off of his indictment. His daughter wanted him to write a memoir to justify or, anyway, explain his life. He declined. Money is its own reward. He died rich and comfortable.

Not a good year to be a famous baseball player. Rose, Mays, Henderson all gone and may they rest in peace.

Luis Tiant also.

They missed Malcolm Smith. He was a demigod in the off-road community, and one of my heroes.

Really, the world will not soon get over the death of...let's see, what was it...Wafa Al-Udaini.

Thanks. I'd forgotten some of these people had died this year, or thought they'd died years ago. Bob Newhart? Man, thought he was still alive. Same with Pete Rose. Willie Mays? Thought he died years ago.

Like a lot of NYT's articles, you have to leave the opinions larded into the discussion and take away the facts. I mean, what's the point of bringing up lenny bruce in the Bob Newhart's section? Bruce didn't become a well known figure to the general public till the 70s and most - even today - don't know him. He may have "Brilliant" but he was a mediocre talent pushed because he was "cutting edge".

Bob Newhart was a successful comedian, who sold records, and starred in several TV shows. He, along with his buddy Don Rickles, remained popular for 40 years.

And I'm glad they yoked Phil donahue with Dr. Ruth. How appropriate!

Thanks to an uncle, saw West, Baylor and Hot Rod Hundley play in the LA Sports Arena. Same uncle took me next door to the Coliseum to see Crazy Legs Hirsch play with the Rams. Be good to your nephews - they remember forever.

We asked for Mojo Nixon, they said, "He don't work here!"
Said if you don't got Mojo Nixon then your column could use some fixin'...
