"'Hookahs and music were banned from the beginning, said Yahia Naeme, the owner of the cafe..."

"... who said the ban had lost him business because many people used to come to his cafe specifically to smoke hookahs. 'If we can’t offer it, they’ll get bored and go elsewhere,' he said. Other cafes in Idlib have skirted the law by offering hookahs in speakeasy-type environments behind closed doors. But Mr. Naeme did not want to risk running afoul of the area’s rulers...."

From "Cafes Can’t Play Music, but the Water Taps Work: Life Under Syria’s Rebels/The Islamists who now lead Syria have ruled the city of Idlib for years. Residents say they imposed some strict laws, but also heeded some complaints and improved public services" (NYT).

Nothing says "improved public services" like getting running water for the chance you'll get beheaded for playing Taylor Swift.

They are brutally oppressive, but at least they made the camels run on time.

gilbar म्हणाले...

Seriously..
Do you WANT to live in a world, where you can listen to Taylor Swift complain about her bad choices in men; while waiting for your camel to FINALLY arrive?
Or have a nice glass of water, and an axe to the head?

decisions.. decisions..

At least the trains run on time.

I should have clarified that I completely support people being beheaded for playing Taylor Swift. That was a good deal. They must've read Trump's book.

... and the bath houses?

Why won't Israel let this Islamic genius for public service work in Gaza? Seriously, watching the lugenpresse clown its way towards total incoherence is a genuine marvel. Especially as Syria is likely to devolve like Libya did, thanks to multiple warring armies determined to rip apart the country.

What’s in the hookah?

Crayons, or Martian cigarettes.

All the gags are taken. Thanks yo.

Well, I would hope the Syrians get some peace and tranquility out of this. Unfortunately, I think the situation will devolve just as the other revolutions in the area have. As CDR Salamander pointed out, if you were looking for any degree of religious tolerance in the area, the Assad regime was the lone player.

The Israeli destruction of war making materials is both awesome and prescient.

This is all Biden's fault. If Trump were president for the last 4 years Putin would be much much stronger and would not have lost Syria.

TayTay outfit sequins from her Eras tour. Big no no. Someone has a date at chop-chop plaza.

I actually visited a hookah lounge in Baghdad. It was interesting, but we really could have used some drinks to go with the experience.

Ain't Islam one fun religion?

It is mostly fun isn't it? Mostly fun and mostly peaceful!

The Syrian Salvation Government (SSG; Arabic: حكومة الإنقاذ السورية, romanized: Ḥukūmat al-ʾInqādh al-Sūriyya) was a de facto unrecognized quasi-state in Syria formed in November 2017 by Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other Syrian opposition groups during the Syrian civil war.[6] It controlled much of northwest Syria, and had an estimated population of over 4,000,000 in 2023.[7] Its de facto capital was Idlib.

Yes, they answer to the mostly Islamist former rebel factions and not have taken control of the government functions in Damascus. He who keeps the water flowing from the taps will gain favor with the people.

Back in the '80s, I read On Wings of Eagles,1983 non-fiction thriller written by British author Ken Follett. It recounts the team of EDS executives Ross Perot sent into Iran during the 1979 revolution to get a couple of his executives who had been taken by the Iranian bureaucracy before the riots. What I noted in reading was how the Iranian bureaucrats kept their power even as the government was being taken over by Islamists, mostly students. Why because of the power of government services. It's the same reason the Allies "reformed" a lot of Nazis in Germany after the surrender and also Bathists in Iraq.

An old Islamist would complain, “Weeeell back in my day the women carried jars of water on their heads just fine, didn’t need no fancy water pipe shit around here then”!

A culture or religion that deprecates music and dogs is retarded.

Politics is easy. Just fill the pot holes, keep the water running and the lights on and pick up the trash. This is why politicians have a hard time with it.

The journalist at the Times, Raja Abdulrahim, has a long history as an apologist for Islamic terrorists.

The sad part is I can't tell if the allusion to "but he made the trains run on time" is what they consider "praise", or if even they understand it's an attack

Mason G म्हणाले...

That's a lot like work. And based on the type of person typically attracted to politics, that's something they don't want to do.

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

As far as i know they still allow Hookahs in Chicago restauraunts.

Bunkypotatohead म्हणाले...

Doesn't sound much different than trying to light up a cigarette in an American cafe.

So now former members of terrorist organizations own Syria. Here's hoping Israel keeps up the removal of Assad's leftover military hardware until nothing more dangerous than an old MRE is left.
