From "X is Elon’s world. Threads is a mess. Is Bluesky any better? The virtual town square, once framed by Twitter, is now fragmented as people flee to bluer pastures" (WaPo)(free-access link).
A quote from a "35-year-old stay at home mom": "I have to find every mean person that’s on here and make sure that all nice people know there’s a meanie in our midst. I definitely think that we can keep that out if that’s what we continue to want."
I wanted to end with a clip from the end of "Yellow Submarine," with John Lennon saying "Newer and bluer meanies have been sighted within the vicinity of this theater," and though I didn't find one suitable for embedding, I did find this Ringo Starr apple juice:

Something I found out today...Jack Dorsey left Bluesky, the company he founded. "Repeating all the mistakes Twitter made." Specifically he objected to their moderation tools and the pressure to remove content.
Also he's fan of Elon Musk and what he's done with Twitter.
Wow, that's wild. Who knew Jack was so based.
Ringo apple juice is awesome!
Dorsey was a figurehead. The rot at Twitter was the work of Yoel Roth and Vijaya Gadde.
Blue Sky seems to me to be just as awful as twitter
I have to find every mean person that’s on here and make sure that all nice people know there’s a meanie in our midst.
Where would she be without meanies to stalk and harass?
BlueSky is the flavor of the week, neither the first nor the last lefty attempt to create a lefty safe space.
No matter how hard the left-media tries to pretend it challenges twitter, it will not meaningfully exist in 6 months and nearly all of these people will be back where they started, on twitter trying to block every person who says something they disagree with.
Blue Sky - So Mastodon no longer walks the earth? Done in by Neanderthals and Cro Magnons?
"Alternate vulgar definition" - The nation looks nervously at Skeet Ulrich, not knowing what to do with him (and trying to remember who the heck he is and why they remember his name).
Another liberal echo chamber.
Blues all turn mean at the mention of Trump.
The only person I follow on Bluesky is paul scalzi and that's to "hate read" him. He's so loathsome, I find him amusing. I notice Bluesky has the odd thing that twitter has: huge numbers of followers vs. engagement. For example, Scalzi supposedly has 100,000 followers.
For example Scalzi's big post of the day is his writing "Fuck you Bigot". Which is directed at Governor Dewine (R Ohio) for signing a bill limiting trannies use of girls bathrooms. This garnered him 4k likes, 500 re-skys, and 250 comments. So, only 4 percent of his followers could be bothered to hit the "like button". and only 1 out of 400 made a comment.
many of his posts have 30 comments, and 300 likes. So, does he really have 100,000 breathing human beings "following" his posts? I dunno.
"...a '35-year-old stay at home mom'"...
An incipient tragedy for the children involved.
Just from scanning many of the people at Bluesky, they're really into banning "trolls" and blocking anyone who disagrees with them. Lots of posts about how much better bluesky is because its free of "haters" and "nazis". I rarely see that, mostly the comments are from leftists just shouting the party line.
Did WaPo mention that the starter packs are also used to mass block Trump users, Nazis(Trump supporters) and right wing types(aka, Trump supporters). Anyone with Trump 2024, MAGA, or other such Nazi terms are put on the list, usually by a devoted Karen type, or a defender of democracy.
X is supposedly about half/half now, lefties and rightees. So I understand people who left X when Musk took over and wanted free speech for everyone. How scary. the old twitter banned you for being anti vax, pro trump, or pro freedom of speech.
20 million users now on the new platform. Maybe it will be a much kinder place-Karens will block you without calling you names, or encaging with you at all.
What I noticed from a few days visit, is that free speech is terrifying for many users there. Sex workers are celebrated, and everyone proudly wears the badge of 'Defender of Democracy".
I was well into adulthood when I first heard "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO and my reaction was pretty much the same as Joe Pera finding out about "Baba O'Reilly."
You can tell something's really, really good for you when you can get all excited without feeling the urge to take off your pants.
This garnered him 4k likes, 500 re-skys...
Based on the above shouldn't that be "re-skeets"? Which would be just perfect for John Scalzi (which who I think you mean).
The Balkanization of America continues apace...
What about the urge to take off somebody else's pants?
Note that, despite all the "joy" about the stupendous rate of growth of Bluesky, it has violated EU rules by refusing to post the number of users it has in the EU. Always be suspicious of people claiming wild success but hiding the actual data.
I assume her name is Karen.
I would note that X owns a federal trademark registration for "TWEET" (Reg. No. 4,338,963) and that Bluesky calling posts "Skeets" would appear to be a case of willful trademark infringement and probably dilution as well.
When your whole strategy for governing the country is based on lies, any place where questions can be openly asked is a danger to your rule.
"I have to find every mean person that’s on here and make sure that all nice people know there’s a meanie in our midst."
She's probably puzzled by the past election because- how could Trump possibly win when everybody she knows voted for Harris?
I have to find every mean person that’s on here and make sure that all nice people know there’s a meanie in our midst.
The Bluesheviks will hunt down all the Meansheviks.
It is quite sad that modern day lefties are afraid to discuss issues with people who disagree with them. That is what happens when you are brainwashed.
Hah ! Bluesky, a lesson in , when awful people move to a different venue, they bring the awful with them and poison the new venue every bit as much as the former venue. Imagine that.
Another progressive circle jerk. Shiny happy people going on meanie hunts.
One thing that was interesting though are the different "feeds" or channels or affinity groups. I don't know if other forms of social media have them but it's a good idea to have various affinity groups or bulletin boards within the site or app where people with a specific interest can post on that topic, so rather than following a dozen people you have one place to go -- sort of a throwback to GeoCities in the early years of the internet.
Hall of Mirrors, progressive-liberal style, so anyone who attempts to post a contrarian viewpoint will be flash-pointed for immediate content ban. Hmm, reminds me of Mao's Cultural Revolution. Cue the reeducation camps and the public shaming - oh, that's already been happening for the past 8 years.
Could call them "Bleats".🐏
No Bluesky tag yet?
Is it primer like "swimmer" or like what goes on before paint?
OT - Happy Thanksgiving all!
Twit-tter resurrected.
"Bleats" love it!
It amuses me that, in pre-Elon days, blewski was considered a suitable alternate for conservative and right-wing voices wishing to escape Twitter's stultifying woke atmosphere, though it never really took off as far as I could see.
Now that X has been emancipated from the anti-free-speech scolds, it's the lefties who are giving blewski a whirl. More power to 'em, I say.
What happened to that "Threads" app? Wasn't that good enough for them?
Perhaps being a Slav, I read the name as "Blu-ski"
I, for one, wish these guys well. Truly. If there was some kind of magic I could use to keep all the trolls, idiots, and assholes on the web from screwing with them I would use it to keep them all out. Let the blue skies peeps skeet to their hearts content. Let every community of people around the web establish their own little enclave for their own fellow travelers and friends and everyone else just leave them the hell alone.
"If there was some kind of magic I could use to keep all the trolls, idiots, and assholes on the web from screwing with them I would use it to keep them all out. Let the blue skies peeps skeet to their hearts content."
In a perfect world, that would be great. I don't want to screw with them, either. But you understand that they *do* want to screw with you, right?
That apple juice commercial is grounded in a pun. "Ringo" happens to be Japanese for "apple".
It looks like "sutta" can mean "grated"; "grated apple" = apple juice. The "grated" part seems more contrived for the pun. The standard way to say juice, as a drink, is just "jusu", a transliteration of juice. Ringo (and jusu) are words are common vocabulary words, ones I learned in an introduction to Japanese.
Oh, and "Starr" is probably transliterated as "sutaa" not "sutta". Typically, syllables ending "ar" are transliterated as a long A ("aa"), which is literally just said for longer than a short A. This mimics a British accent pronunciation of "ar"—ending a syllable with any consonant other than N is against the rules. The double T is sutta is pronounced with a slight hesitation before the T, while "st-" would be transliterated as "sut-" with the U "whispered". There is no way to render "st" without the U in the middle in Japanese, but they basically don't pronounce the U, or rush past it quickly, which is called "whispering", while the double T would force you to pause there.
So basically the girls say "Mmm, grated apple" and Ringo thinks they are both talking about him and getting his name wrong and is correcting them. Little did he realize they love the delicious taste of a refreshing apple juice more than a celebrity sighting.
Bless their hearts.
Bluesky or Brayer Asset
Imagine wanting to spend your time looking for mean people. No thanks.
Another place I'll never have to visit, as I believe reports like this about it.
Again, these poor, precious, little leftists didn't leave X because their views weren't being heard. They left because ours were.
Fine. Stay in your bubble. Don't learn a damn thing.
Listening to leftists, it appears they don't think there's anything they need to learn.
Blue Sky seems like one big left-tilting echo chamber bubble. No thank you.
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby
I don't see the point. Don't follow people you don't like on Twitter. Is the point to stick it to Musk personally because he supported Trump? Apart from being ineffective, why be emotionally invested in a guy you don't know?
The inability to block people who harass you might be worth leaving for.
That was a stupid thing for Musk to remove.
Wanting to avoid assholes like Drago =/= wanting an echo chamber.

Joyce Benenson's "Warriors and Worriers" strikes again. Men are more likely to be openly aggressive, women to pose behind caring.
