It seems impossible. I'm reading about this and that podcast, and an occasional interview with a mainstream newsperson, such as Fox's Bret Baier coming up, but never a news conference. How is it possible to rise to the presidency without one attempt at handling a press conference?

Democrats actually poll people and focus group people BEFORE and AFTER they meet with Kamala and have found that people are MORE LIKELY to vote for Trump if they speak with Kamala.
How could this happen? Easily, if those who support her don't care about press conferences, don't need to distinguish her policy ideas from those of her competitor's. There's a world of "automatic" voters out there who can't change their minds about a Democrat or about Trump.

By contrast, President Trump is equally at ease in a hostile interrogation as he is with Theo Von or Tucker Carlson. He might be in trouble if Kamala had the basic intellectual firepower to handle softball reporting, but that is the problem with genuine DEI hires. A problem that Condi Rice, whatever her flaws, never had.

The danger for Kamala is that someone is going to actually challenge all her tergivsations. By having a press conference, the risk of a 'journalist' doing just that increase. If the press gaggle senses blood in the water, the result could be an uncontrollable feeding frenzy.

Quite a few people have come to believe that we really don't need a President who can think well under pressure, and handle challenges extemporaneously. They believe that all we need is a President with a good staff and a coterie of easily manipulated media figures.

The whole video is great, but the first few seconds are Kamala saying that Trump is hiding out from the press because he is afraid to reveal his weakness as a candidate. The DNC is using the Goebbels playbook, to the frickin' letter; it feels like irony, but it's their technique in everything.

Let’s be honest, you typically hold a press conference to allow questions about what you have done.
You know what I'd like to see happen? Suppose Trump announces that he will participate in a no-holds-barred press conference with the national press - provided that Harris agrees to participate on the same -- no-holds-barred - terms - press conference. Let The People Decide!
It would be unseemly to hold a press conference. If some poor reporter actually asked a substantive question, the reporter would probably be physically attacked by Harris' Praetorian Guard, that is, the main stream media.
Obviously, Harris would rather take the heat for avoiding tough interviews than bungling one. But I think a sharp interview with an antagonistic reporter (at least one hour long and without preconditions) would help allay concerns about Ms. Harris' intelligence and her preparedness for the job. Right now she seems out of her depth.

I used to think Baier was a good reporter… a guy who would dig for the truth. His last few performances have left me thinking otherwise.
I think press conferences is a bit of shorthand here. It is not uncommon for presidential candidates to have private meetings with various media editorial boards as well as generally making themselves available to the press traveling with their campaign (remember the photo of the press pool gazing adoringly at Hillary Clinton?). To my knowledge Harris has done none of these, as well as several news organizations that could be considered Democrat-friendly (The NYT and Time magazine, IIRC for example) publicizing that she has refused their interview requests.
Apparently, according to P-Inga and Dinky Dau and the other lunatic lefty conspiracy theorists, Atlanta GA and Chicago IL are now officially part of Trump's basement.

1. They are the opposition whose goal is to make him look bad and
2. He knows he is winning and does not need the air time.

If Harris wins, and I believe she will by winning most of the swing states including North Carolina, then the Trump era will be over. Trump is too old to run again and will likely be convicted of several more major crimes over the next year.
This will have a profound impact on US politics and politics around the world.
First, the Republican party will go through another transformation. Some will try to take over the MAGA voters but all will fail because MAGA is a cult of personality and there is only one Trump. Mainstream Republican leaders will also try to take control of the party and will have some success. But it's likely to be tumultuous period for the GOP and they will likely emerge weaker due to in-fighting and power struggles. And with Trump gone, there will be more opportunities for bipartisanship.
Secondly, Trump's exit from politics and the world stage will negatively impact all the other Trump type politicians in the West. The perception that the era of bellicose rhetoric and the rise of the far right is on the downslide will become the reality.
I'm going to keep a copy of this that we can discuss after the election. Any objections?

Think about that for a moment: Border Czar, Wireless Connections Czar, plus other significant responsibilities assigned to her by Resident Joe, and she has apparently never once been held to public account for anything, Even Dementia Boy held what passed for press conferences, though they were scripted setups with designated questioners. Althouse, I can appreciate your bafflement how a major presidential candidate has never had a press conference. However, we are living in baffling times. Biden won running a campaign from his basement where he literally read the stage directions from the teleprompter and was showing obvious signs of senility. We had a coordinated censorship campaign between the deep state, the media, and the tech companies over the Hunter Biden laptop "hoax". We have had, I dunno, dozens of conspiracy theories proven to be true or at least more accurate than not, while our media pushes obvious lies. Our current administration supports both an invasion of our southern border and the non-prosecution of crime, except for legally bizarre cases it brings against Trump and J6 protestors who get a year in prison for "parading" while rioters are released with no charges. We have college campuses overtly supporting terrorists and making statements that would make Hitler smile. We have one party supporting universal vote by mail, which only a few decades ago was agreed by everyone to be a sign of massive vote fraud and non-democratic institutions. I can go on. What is normal?

According to records stretching back to the Coolidge administration and compiled by the American Presidency Project, Trump has gone longer without conducting a formal solo press conference than any president since at least Lyndon Johnson. He also went over 300 days without a formal press briefing. But at least he was already President when he decided to ignore the press.
