"Trump, during Fayetteville town hall, says he'd change Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg."

The Fayetteville Observer observes.

The proposal was extremely popular with the crowd, to the point where they booed a man who said he was "an active-duty soldier here at Fort Liberty."

Later, Trump said "I think I just learned the secret to winning absolutely and by massive margins. I'm gonna promise you, as I said at the beginning, that we're gonna change the name back to Fort Bragg, because... I just see this great-looking soldier just accidentally said Fort Liberty and he got almost booed the hell out of the place."

Arkansas? Bragg is in NC

Heh. President Trump can be strangely complimentary of people even when he opposes them. It's wild. But yes, there is a strong group of traditionalists who take slights to their history very personally. It mixes with DEI academia like oil and water, yet Democrats have seen fit to stamp on them for years. Preparing the ground for Trump, who wins intense loyalty simply by not being aligned with the Democrats or their Bushbot vassals.

Fayetteville, NC, which is outside of Bragg.

Also known as "Fayettenam".

99% of everybody that is or has been through Bragg, including myself, will never call it anything but, especially the rank and file. Even the O-4s or higher will kowtow only 1% of the time in the most PC environments and then it goes right back again. Same with Ft. Hood. Calling it Ft. Liberty is a great way to "out" yourself as someone whose trustworthiness is dubious.

Personally, I say just strip all Army posts of their names and assign them numbers. "Army Post 1, Army Post 2, etc." The incompetent losers and scum who make up the Army don't deserve anything better.

not Arkansas.

The takeaway being that Donald Trump is in North Carolina bringing attention to the plight of the victims of Hurricane Helene, raising money for them, bringing supplies.

And Kamala Harris is using Air Force Two (a taxpayer-owned aircraft) to fly to some battleground state to raise money for her failed campaign.

The South will rise again. And that right soon.

I’m glad someone cares about North Carolina. Biden has decided he doesn’t need to be the President for those Americans.

As I understand it, Gen. Bragg had an undistinguished career for the Confederacy. . His name was chosen not to honor his military genius but to be inclusive of Southern whites. The Army wanted their services. I guess it was successful, and I'd rather go to war with Sgt. York and Patton than not.....Anyway time has moved on, and the name Ft. Bragg now honors the men who trained there rather than the actual general. Maybe lose the final g. Say it's a place that people can brag about.

Creola Soul said...

To those of us who were stationed there, it will always be Fort Bragg no matter what they call it.
The renaming never fulfilled its promise of ending racism and bringing peace and love to our land.

Big Mike said...

General Bragg was one of the commanders most responsible for the victory of the Union forces in the Kentucky-Tennessee theater of war.

He was, of course, a Confederate general.

Jacksonians vs Stevensonians.

Have we reached the point that a H-W victory with signs of fraud would lead to open rebellion? Not just mutterings on the web?

It feels like it. Democratic policies are reaching their logical conclusions and western NC is the latest example. Could it get any more vivid? Any more maddening?

I would rather see the Trump side win by the power of the ballot box, and make it an overwhelming victory. Seems at least possible. But 2020, J6, Pelosi Machiavelli.

What then?

We need a Fort Longstreet.

Actually, if it were up to me, I would rename one of those forts "Fort Sherman-Johnston and the other "Fort Grant-Longstreet," in recognition of these generals who opposed one another in horrific battles and became close friends after the war.*

If they could set their former professional differences aside, so can we.

*But not "Fort Sickles-Longstreet" because Dan Sickles was a shithead. His notable contribution to the field of jurisprudence notwithstanding.

Thanks for the correction. I had the wrong tag. I hear "Fayetteville" and I think Arkansas, but Lafayette has many cities named after him.

Fayetteville, Alabama
Fayetteville, Arkansas
Fayetteville, Georgia
Fayetteville, Illinois
Fayetteville, Indiana
Fayetteville, Washington County, Indiana
Fayetteville, Missouri
Fayetteville, New York
Fayetteville, North Carolina,
Fayetteville, Ohio
Fayetteville, Pennsylvania
Fayetteville, Tennessee
Fayetteville, Texas
Fayetteville, West Virginia
Fayetteville Township, St. Clair County, Illinois

Not to mention Lafayette and (home of Meade) West Lafayette in Indiana

Perhaps in honor of Tim Walz's wartime service in Afghanistan: Commander McBragg.

Seriously? How could someone go by "The Drill SGT" and not know about Fayetteville? I grew up there and I can attest that it's known as a shithole anywhere the US Army has been. In fact, if you mention it in most of those places they're first response is usually; "Rick's Lounge!".

Fort Bragg was named after Braxton Bragg, a confederate general. This was in the late 1800's when there was a reconciliation effort and a desire to recruit southerners for military service.

Since then, countless soldiers have passed through Fort Bragg on their way to Normandy and countless other places. Tradition is important in the military and the name should have been left as it was.

Unfortunately some people with no knowledge of history and no respect for the military got to indulge their own sense of moral superiority and self righteousness and now here we are with "Fort Liberty". And we're lucky. Kamala will soon be changing it to "Fort Al Sharpton" or perhaps "Peace Center Al Sharpton".

They really should have left it as it was. There are admirers of Braxton Bragg but most scholars now believe he was a terrible general and contributed much to the restoration of the Union and the abolition of slavery.

Wibble has pointed out the purpose of changing the name. This is how you have an army that loses wars.

Esprit De Corps is why we used to win battles.

narciso said...

So the confederate version of santa ana

Peachy said...

There is a Lafayette, CO, too. Named after the first settler. (Not the Famous french nobleman who fought with George Washington) I learned that fact at "Meet the Spirits" in Boulder.

AndrewV said...

These bases in the South were established when the US entered World War I and they were named after notable Confederate generals to try and engage the local communities where they are located. Seeing that in 1917 the Civil War was still within living memory.

Peachy said...

oh wait - even I"m confused. LOL.

Crimso said...

In addition to Fayetteville in TN (pronounced locally as "Fedvull" and apparently not directly named after the Marquis but rather the Fedvull in the original post), there is also a Lafayette TN (pronounced "La-FAY-it").

Patentlee said...

West Lafayette, Indiana; boiler up!

Crimso said...

Bragg was at the very least a quite competent general, though he made some crucial mistakes that can't be overlooked (as they are for a number of generals considered to be better). A major reason why he is held in such disregard is that he could be a very unpleasant person to deal with. His subordinates were a mixture of stellar and awful (and in between), and many of them were just as difficult to deal with. Plenty of blame to go around. And don't get me started on Hood...

The name changes indicate how little the left knows, or cares, about history. The destruction of statues is another indicator. More Red Guard stuff as in China.

One of my favorite stories was when Forrest, very irate with Bragg, laid into him and included in his tirade "And if you were any part of a man I would slap your jaws and force you to resent it!" Bragg let it slide, in part because he needed Forrest badly, but also because Forrest was a very physically dangerous person.

Maynard said...

Longstreet was hated because he became a Republican after the war - in Louisiana of all places.

Bragg was the commander for winning side of the largest battle in the Western theater... Chickamauga. So he did slightly better than old Santa Anna. He also didn't genocide any Americans.

He was an enslaver just George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, his proto-Conderate forefathers.

Having suffered through Basic and AIT training at Ft. Polk, some 55 years ago this summer, I still like the name. The English may have something going--they still call it the Battle of Hasting, talk about Bosworth field etc. Trafalgar Square still dominates Central London. History doesn't change just because some wokester wants to change the name to forget what actually happened.

jim said...

Exactly. Everyone loved Braxton.

How about a compomise: Fort Longstreet.

When I was there, Rick’s was on the prohibited list. Is it still there? Asking for a friend.

MountainMan said...

I was opposed to renaming these forts. But, just for fun one rainy day, I made my own list or proposed name changes. In each case I tried to meet objectives of maintaining some historical connection as well as proposing names that I thought would be acceptable to veterans and the communities. These were my proposals:

Fort A. P. Hill Fort John Sedgwick
Fort Lee Fort Montgomery Meigs
Fort Bragg Fort Matthew Ridgway
Fort Gordon Fort Lucius Clay
Fort Benning Fort Omar Bradley
Fort Polk Fort George Patton
Fort Hood Fort Audie Murphy
Fort Pickett Fort George Thomas
Fort Rucker Fort Benjamin Davis

I think the new names are very poor. Nothing against the individuals, I know they were all fine people and in several cases heroic people. But I don't know anyone who, given the old name, can say what the new one is. I think mine would have worked better.

This week, it occurred to me that black activists were doubly stupid to go after Robert E. Lee. If he had lost Richmond and the Confederacy collapsed or fractured in Spring 1862, immediate emancipation was far from assured. The lion's share of the people killed or impoverished in the next three years of war were white.

We want Benning back too where Airborne is born. They just train at Bragg.

Seal Of Lion said...

Instead of Matt Ridgway I would do Fort Gavin after General James Gavin. The youngest divisional commander of the US Army who led the 82nd Airborne into Holland.
Mat Ridgway can have Benning.
Nothing against Audie Murphy but Fort Hood has always been an armor/calvary post. Fort Buford after John Buford.

Fort Hood was for John Bell Hood who handed Atlanta to Sherman on a silver platter and proceeded to do the same at Nashville.

Buford for the win. Perhaps the best Union Cav leader, whose decisions at Gettysburg cascaded directly to a Union win of the civil war

Dave said...

You're right about the reasoning for the name, but wrong on the timeline. Fort Bragg was established (as Camp Bragg) during WWI.

Biff said...

As an aside, I find it interesting when public places are renamed for political reasons, but the names generally fail to take. In the New York City area, it seems that most locals still refer to the 59th Street Bridge, the Triborough Bridge, and the Tappan Zee Bridge, rather than the Ed Koch Bridge, the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, and the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, respectively, despite the repeated efforts the government. Good.

Dave said...

The really screwed up thing about the name change, is that if they had gone with, say, Fort Ridgeway (after General Matthew Ridgeway, who commanded the 82nd Airborne on D-Day), current and former members of the Airborne Mafia would have objected a whole lot less.
But, at least according to the scuttlebutt I've heard, the Airborne and Special Forces communities couldn't agree on a name, so they ended up with Fort Liberty.
Fort Cavazos is just stupid and reeks of DEI, and also Big Army's aversion to naming things after people who weren't generals. Either Fort Audie Murphy or Fort (Roy P.) Benevidez would have been fine - both were Texans, and both earned the Medal of Honor.

Oso Negro said...

True confession. I date both of General Cavazos' daughtenrs back in the day. I think of it as Ft Cathy and Becky.
