Obama's in Madison today — with Tim Walz in tow — but where is he appearing?

I've been seeing Facebook ads for this event for days and getting email, but it all lists the location as "TBA." Example:

"Exact address to be announced."

Why the big secret? Security? I'm going to guess that they'd like to use a big arena, but only if there's going to be the right size crowd. It can't be allowed to be seen that Obama does not draw in the masses.

Steve Sailer has had to do the same thing on his book tour--you buy a ticket and then they tell you where the event is--because of Antifa et al threats causing cancellations for ten years.

Someone tracked where the phones came from at a previous Harris Madison event. 30% were from Georgia, the rest from towns in WI, MI, and IL. Did they want some black people in the crowd?

"Pending capacity restrictions" it says. Uh huh. What does it say about democrats that they have moved on to the extent even Obama can't really be relied upon to draw a crowd? The most generous interpretation is that because his presence is needed for these impromptu events the USSS did not have time to adequately prepare a venue and screen the attendees. Keeping location secret until the last minute is one way to make assassin's plans more difficult.

Although that "last minute" golf game in Florida sure didn't work out for Trump, did it?

gadfly said...

If the Jackasses played the crowd-size game the way that Trump does, actual attendance is not important at all. Trump just tells his cult that the arena was filled to overflowing and latecomers stood in the rain, cold , snow, wind - whatever outside.

I am not a Democrat, but I do remember back in the day when Sarah Palin was the GOP VP candidate that she drew larger crowds than John McCain.

Exactly. If you run an astroturf campaign, you have to be consistent. Obama needs that crowd to be enthusiastic, with no inopportune boos mixed in.

It's surprising to me that the campaign thinks that big goofy face of Walz on the announcement is going to draw anybody. Interesting that the image consultants told him to lose the glasses. Prior to becoming the VP pick I never saw a picture of him without them. Without the glasses he radiates even less gravitas. Negative gravitas, in fact.

Once the Democrats could draw in large urban crowds without relying on gimmicks. Obama certainly could, whatever problem I otherwise have with him. But he didn't get wealthy from crowd sizes, he got rich from oligarch donors throwing vast sums of money at him. But that reduces his cachet with normal Americans, to the point he's just as reliant on paid actors as Kamala Harris. Maybe even more so: paid rallies are quite expensive, and don't convince anyone that you are actually popular.

Donald Trump is genuinely popular with the GOP base, and any number of his supporters would never accept a substitute if anything happened to him. I wouldn't.

My guess is this event has two purposes - to get media coverage and to get union folks energized for GOTV efforts. The focus now is on GOTV. Christopher B said...

Per Jim Geraghty this morning yes they do (He's quoting from NBC News)

“There has been a thought that maybe Michigan or Wisconsin will fall off,” said a senior Harris campaign official, who stressed that the bigger concern is over Michigan. Two other people with knowledge of campaign strategy — who, like others in this article, were granted anonymity to speak candidly — also underscored deep concern about Michigan. Those people still believe that all the states are close and that there are alternative routes to victory.

Pretty sure that it's security. Couple of weeks ago we received notice of a Trump rally - same deal, "we'll let you know where after you RSVP.

With regard to changing the location based on responses? No personal experience doing setup for such events but that doesn't seem right. Start with the idea that the campaign would sign contracts with two (or more) venues telling them "we'll let you know."

Secret Service has to prepare two (or more) site plans? They're gonna need (and setup) double (or triple) the number of metal detectors needed for the crowd.

Add the other vendors - depending on setup time, do we need multiple contracts or can we get by with a flexible vendor?

"Subject to capacity limitations?" Well sure; don't be angry if we have to close the doors before you get a seat (as happened to us at a Trump rally in Battle Creek four years ago).

Seems to me that many of the commenters here haven't actually gone to such rallies and looked around to see what it takes to prepare for one.

Anyway, that's what I think.

Whenever Trump decides to hold a rally, his campaign just asks "What's the biggest auditorium in your town." Whenever the Democrats hold one, they can't do that because they'd be showing up in an empty building or stadium.

Democrats need to know HOW MANY people are going to come. Trump doesn't have that problem. EVERYBODY comes when Donald Trump is in town.

And for Field Marshall Freder's benefit, the data scientist dude that geo-fences both Trump and kamala-la-la-la-la's rallies is Tony Seruga.

He can be found on X at Tony Seruga@TonySeruga.

Here's his breakdown from Trump's last rally:

"GPS—9,403 mobile devices at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, North Carolina for the Trump rally today.

7,111 are first time Trump rally attendees.

84% reside within 50 miles of this location.

For the record, the area code and billing address has absolutely zero to do with where our technology pins a devices likely residence.

That is based on where the device is most likely located between midnight and 5 am, on most days. There is a separate algorithm for graveyard workers/night owls. "

Drago said...

More FYI type info from Seruga regarding some commentary from above:

"FYI—it is illegal to unmask or append the identity of a particular device’s user without a warrant. However, there are thousands of businesses, most overseas that will do just that for pennies per record."

Results?

411 mobile devices are likely associates of the cartel, while 147 are associated with trafficking NGOs, included No Más Muertes (No More Deaths).

Where were these attendees originally from?

608 devices were from Illinois, 515 were from Washington, DC, 127 were from New York, 1,108 were from Georgia, 84 were from Pennsylvania, 911 were from California.

65% of the remainder were from:

Phoenix, AZ
Tucson, AZ
Mesa, AZ
Chandler, AZ
Glendale, AZ
Scottsdale, AZ
Gilbert, AZ
Tempe, AZ
Peoria, AZ
Yuma, AZ"

"But having turned over so much of our lives (our jobs, our retirement funds, our personal safety, our healthcare, etc.) to the Government, can you trust one or the other of them to take reasonable care of your life -- or to leave you alone enough to take care of yourself?"

How did things go when Trump was in charge? And since then?

Margolis's article doesn't actually say that the disadvantaged minority program at Hastings Law helped her get in or was more than just a separate pre-orientation, something my undergrad college started about then. But public schools are rarely explicit about racial preferences.

If they want a big crowd in Madison, free beer is the answer. Works every time, although Obama probably prefers the wine-and-cheese crowd.

Can't discern any difference between the marxist or the America First guy nor their policies while in office nor the results of those policies.

"Anglican centrist"....ah yes. Its tracking now.

Frankly, given that, I am surprised you haven't declared for the marxist already.

Well, there's still 2 weeks to go to get that done....

Godfather pretends there's no actual evidence in play that directly answers his questions. Of course there is.

Which means this whole Golly Gee Whiz If I Only Had Some Relevant Answers schtick is a....fig leaf.

Original Mike: if they coukd make your early vote disappear, they could make your election day vote disappear. Falling for this nonsense is how to lose an election. Vote early. That way, if you get jammed up on election day, you've already voted.

And STOP listening to whoever is trying to discourage you from voting. That person is deluded or lying to you.

The liars in this thread are those of you calling me a liar for declaring that I am not a Democrat. I am not a Trump populist either. I have always registered and voted Republican for my entire long life until our convicted criminal ex-president came along. In 2016 I voted Libertarian and out of desperation to keep Trump from winning a second term, I cast my vote for Biden - the better of two evils.

As for Meade, he and I are are on opposite sides of the Trump fence - but he has obviously seen enough of my posts over the years to know that I am not lying.

Not once, since I've been here, have you ever taken any stance other than the currently popular progressive one. Your unreasoning hatred of Trump had put you over the edge. Trump is a moderate. He leads like a moderate. The country was prosperous and peaceful when he was president.

Rusty said...

Oh. And appealing to authority won't help you. You rise and fall here on the merits of your argument.
