"Iran fired a large barrage of missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening, an attack that could set off a sharp escalation in the long-simmering conflict...."

"Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps said in a statement that the missile attack had been in retaliation for the assassinations of Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, Hamas’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, and an Iranian commander. The statement said Iran would launch more missiles if Iran were attacked.... Loud booming explosions were heard above Tel Aviv, and flashes of light from the arcing intercepting rockets of Israel’s air defense system were visible. The salvo of missiles from Iran came a day after Israeli forces began a rare ground invasion of southern Lebanon aimed at crippling the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah there.... A senior White House official said the United States would help defend Israel and warned that a direct attack against Israel 'will carry severe consequences for Iran.'... President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris... reviewed plans to help Israel defend against the attacks and protect Americans in the region."

The NYT reports.

Does Israel know where these missiles are launched from? Are they mobile launchers?

The NYT article isn't helpful, but ZeroHedge has coverage. Don't forget, Iran is 1000 miles from Israel - the missiles must pass over Iraq and Jordan before striking and both have closed their airspace. Israel channel 14 claims the US is negotiating with Iran on the scale of the attack such that it is small enough to allow the US to demand Israel not retaliate. Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

Wow. Kamala might have to plug her earphones into her phone for this one.

wildswan म्हणाले...

Iran launched about 180 guided missiles. Israel shoots down the missiles that would hit in cities but ignores the ones that hit outside. So there are scary shots of missiles arcing down toward Israel and exploding, lighting up the horizon. The initial coverage was chaotic with those scenes of missiles exploding somewhere in Israel accompanied by suggestions that all the nasty militias on Israel's borders were launching terror attacks all over Israel coordinated by Iran. But at the end of the day (so far - afternoon of October 1 in Wisconsin) only a few people were wounded by the missiles and there was only one terror attack in Jaffa in which eight people were killed.

We can only wait and see how Israel responds to the attack. As I see it, Biden will support Israel to the end but he is not in charge. Kamala and Walz are both typical progressive anti-semites, hiding their attitudes till after the election. They don't give a damn about the Americans in Appalachia and they think less than that of Israel.

Israel commits multiple assassinations against Iranian leaders, the last one using American-supplied bunker busting bombs, and finally Iran's hand is forced, and strikes back, and now we are dragged into it.

Right, the "minor incursion" comment was actually an invitation to Putin to enter a trap. Just like the statement to his foreign minister that when Ukraine entered NATO, we were going to place nukes there, five minutes from Moscow.

Especially when our war to bleed Russia's military has instead bled out our supply of interceptor missiles. No air defense system can hold out indefinitely just like no fort can withstand a siege from a determined and well supplied foe.

Iran needed to take some action to save face both domestically and in the Moslem world. But they do not want to start a real shooting war ( they are likely to get the worst of it). So they tipped off Israel and the US several hours in advance of the attack. Israelis take shelter, and are well prepared to shoot down the incoming. Iran looks tough. Some minor aftershocks, and then everyone moves on.

mikee म्हणाले...

500 missiles isn't an escalation itself? The writer missed something - the Iranian attack on Israel IS the sharp escalation of the conflict. Whatever Israel does now - whether that is nothing, to nuking Qom - will be an attempt to win the now-active conflict Iran has initiated, not "escalate" it.

tim in vermont म्हणाले...

I listen to one podcast regularly, and he said weeks ago, after Israel did one of its assassination strikes, that Iran was preparing its retaliation, and was probably not going to strike back until October, until it was good and ready, given that Israel wanted this war so badly.

I like these kinds of moments where you find out who's been lying, who's been deluding themselves, and whose opinions are worth considering. One thing though, I don't take into account the number of times those opinions have been repeated when deciding who knows what they are talking about.

So, question for for all the aficionados of "international law," what exactly is the justification for Iran launching missiles at civilian areas in Israel in reponse to Israeli attacks on a paramilitary force on Lebanese territory? When will the UN object? Who will bring suit in the ICJ or ICC?

Josephbleau म्हणाले...

This is Iran’s second reprisal. I agree they had to do it but their tactics of state sponsored asymmetrical warfare is a failure. They are a one trick pony who can only strike civilian targets with long range artillery and imbedded killers.

Their presence in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza is like the uninvited drunk at the party, no one in the region is going to have a good time until they pass out. So Israel must just sit around or provoke them to self destruct. That’s too bad, but it’s better than having your soccer kids killed for the next 20 years.

Israel would not attack them if they were not active shooters, although there are some who would probably disagree.

Mike (MJB Wolf) म्हणाले...

Compared to other military threats to the USA, there is nothing that even remotely approaches the conventional threats posed by the PRC. Furthermore, the threat posed by the PRC is one of A2/AD (Anti-Access/Area Denial) defense in depth. The Chinese aren't interested in a pissing match with the USA. They are solely focused on complete reunification of what they consider to be historical Chinese territory.

They have a total understanding of their political and military objectives. Our political and military objectives are far less clear and now substantively change every 4 years.

China's strategy against anybody denying their objectives is simple: make any attempt to deny their objectives politically, economically, and militarily unbearable. We're getting stretched thin. They haven't even started. I'd say whatever they're doing, they're doing a good job.

OTOH, both Ukraine and Israel do show the ChiComs how bloody hard it is to subjugate a place, even if you have all kinds of advantages. So these wars may serve as cautionary tales warning the CCP off Taiwan.

So there's a concept that I find relevant here, the Army / Fleet "in being".

This is a military force that sits someplace where it CAN attack enemies, and has sufficient defenses that the enemies can't reasonably attack and take it out.

Which means the enemy has to build defenses against what it might do, having a significant strategic effect while doing nothing.

Hezbollah and Hamas were Iran's "armies in being", and were apparently the reason why Israel hasn't "deproliferated" Iran.

But Iran used them to attack Israel, and Israel managed to get around their defenses.

So now Iran is screwed, because Israel really faces no cost to keep them from bombing the hell out of Iran's nuclear program.

IMO, the only really question is will Israel decide to wait until after the election before attacking. I expect they won't

One of the people hired and being groomed by Obama and Biden to work on US national security is Mahir Batir, exemplary of the strategy Biden/Obama approach -- his anti-Israel background includes writing his thesis promoting the Palestinian right of return, executive board member of SJP at Georgetown U., strong supporter for BDS, etc.

The Abraham Accords however proved that the Palestinian conflict is not at the top of the agenda for all Arab leaders or a requirement before engaging in normalization of relations with Israel. Trump does not make pandering to Jew hating Muslims a political necessity or an election strategy.

Trump pushed Iran with sanctions to the brink of bankruptcy resulting in their diminished capacity to supply and arm proxies in the region.

Trump has always been clear about the right of Israel to exist and that the path forward for the region ultimately is to oppose radical Islamic extremism AKA Islamic fundamentalism.

I find it mildly amusing that the flower-children/hey-hey-LBJ/"don't be a square" warm-fuzzies boomers that used the idiotic Vietnam War as the cudgel to bash open a hole for themselves into the politics of the 60s and 70s are as bad or worse than the Kissinger/McNamara/Lemay warmongering they claimed to vehemently oppose. "Do what feels good" as their philosophy of life literally translated into do what feels right in domestic and international politics, facts, economics, and history be damned.

They didn't become their parents. They became worse.

Based on reports so far, Iran's attack appears to be a very carefully calculated "pretend" attack (lots of missiles, but no strategic targets and very limited damage/lives). This suggests they are either implying they have no other current intentions so "let's call it a day on both sides", or they are baiting Israel to strike harder and thus justify unleashing their really deadliest weapons on major strategic targets. So far so good. But, here's the problem. Once missiles start flying you never know when they might hit an unintended target that creates a firestorm of public demand for massive retaliation. This is not yet predictable regarding where it might go.

Joe Biden fully supports what Israel is doing, or we wouldn't be shipping them the bunker busting bombs to carry out their assassinations. He is just lying about it. People call Biden the "Gaffe-o-Matic" but to be honest with you, it's kind of amazing how a man can say the opposite of what he is truly thinking nearly 100% of the time, and slip up as rarely as he does.

I imagine the facilities are too hardened to destroy with conventional weapons. Be nice if they could pull off another Stuxnet.

I think this is the ultimate deterrent against Iran getting too destructive with their responses. At some point you would give Israel the justification for nuking the sites. Ditto if Iran were to seriously attempt to assassinate Trump (assuming Trump is back in office). He's never going to bomb their cities like I guess he threatened recently, but the nuclear facilities sitting out in the desert would be an obvious target.

Mica म्हणाले...

At the risk of spreading unverified early confusion, claims by various non-Arab/non-Iranian sources that (1) some (two?) Iron Dome sites were hit (as seen by follow-up secondary explosions on the ground), (2) bigger attack at Nevatim air base with heavy cluster hits (which was probed last time, they changed types of rockets this time) -- this houses F35s (unclear if any damaged, most were in shelters, but not clear if all), (3) Mossad HQ in Tel Aviv, (4) some corridor in Gaza (unclear to me what was that about, but apparently IDF troops), and (5) Some gas platforms (damage uncertain, because fire observed could be misleading; stories about destruction probably widely exaggerated).

The partial failure of AD (e.g., claim is below 50% success rate) is worrisome because it may signify that any follow-up attacks would dismantle, for example, the whole electrical grid in a single shot (small area, very dense grid, easily destroyed, not like Ukraine). Again, take it with the grain of salt, distilled from various telegram commentary.

Apparently, systematic dismantling of IRG infrastructure in Syria was the straw that broke.... , interesting note with Putin avoiding Bibi's phone call.

Dr Weevil म्हणाले...

It doesn't matter how deep a bunker is buried in the earth, it has to have ventilation shafts, as well as ports for power lines, and doors for humans and truckloads of materials to come in and finished product to go out.

You can put the thickest titanium doors over all of these, but if a bomb buries all the entrances that allow passage of air (air-vents and doorways) under piles of rubble, and the Iranians can't get the rubble cleared away before the oxygen runs out, everyone inside dies.

All Israel needs is a detailed map of all the air vents and other entrances. Chances of persuading some Iranian to provide one, via bribes, threats, or appeals to common humanity: high.

What do we do about Iran?
The Obama/Biden approach is that the US should form a semi-demi-alliance with Iran to keep peace in the Middle East. Obama committed a whole lot of US money to that approach. That hasn't worked well.
The Other Approach (I'm not sure it's the Trumpist approach) is that the US supports allies and semi-allies in the region, who are resisting Iranian pressure.
To me it seems clear that there are two "Strong Horses" -- Iran and Israel. Obama's choice to support Iran wasn't OBVIOUSLY wrong, but it hasn't worked out, has it?
Choosing to support Israel isn't (at this time, in my view) a choice of the stronger horse, but maybe it's the only realistic choice for the US,

Sure, you can make a mess and kill a bunch of people, but that doesn't destroy the facility. It would be a major escalation. Not a good idea if you can't eliminate their nuclear program. 'Shoot at the king' kind of thing.

Apparently doesn't believe the Palestinians and their supporters aren't kidding with the position from "river to sea". It means Israel cannot exist and Jews can't live in the region. Expulsion or death. Maybe he can explain how the Israelis are supposed to negotiate this. In the meantime, the insanity of the WW3 paranoids is stupid beyond belief. China will not invade Taiwan. It can't invade Taiwan. Such an invasion will make the Normandy landings look like a live-fire exercise while all shipping coming from or too Chinese ports will end either by sinking or banning. China is already in bad economic shape and such a beyond stupid action could and probably will, cause China to collapse economically and the CCP with it. China relies a lot on copying Soviet/Russian technology and are seeing how well it doesn't work against older Western tech. The fact that after two and a half years Russian has not defeated Ukraine is something surely has not gone unnoticed by the CCP. Putin will not use a nuke against a NATO country. He knows that he personally will be targeted in return. And you have to assume that the order will actually be carried out. Romania is a cautionary tale. The nonsense about NATO being an offensive threat is just that, nonsense. Who actually believe that all or even a plurality of the member states are going to decide to start an offensive war? Ukraine is defending its existence, it is degrading Russia and the Russian's ability to actually harm the West militarily. What are we spending so much on defense if not to weaken our advisories? Israel and Ukraine both need American weapons and munitions, they don't need or seek America troops. Iran has been at war with the US since Carter's term. We just refuse to take them seriously. Helping diminish Russia, Iran and its proxies is in our national interest. The Chinese have a saying "kill the chicken, scare the monkey".If the US and the West just quietly do the provisioning, the monkey will be suitably scared.

In a possible thriller plot, the parents of all the hostages hire a rogue ex group of sas, seal, and minnesota national guard command sergeant majors who infiltrate iran and destroy sams and radar so a c130 can perilously fly in escorted by old P 47 fighters stolen from a museum, flown by 80 year old vets. The plane parachutes two 4000 lb blivets of gasoline landing at the air shaft to the nuclear bomb lab and a traitor hooks up hoses to dump it in.

In the final scene one of the commandoes puts a timed thermite bomb in an asbestos bag, so the fuze wont fire the gas and lets it fall to the bottom, incinerating all the iranian MIT grads.

IIRC no one knew what happened. Obama leaked it. Just like when bin Laden was killed. No one knew he was killed. He had a ton of intel. Our guys had yet to analyze it. Similarly he advertised to everyone we killed him and we have his intel so that our enemies could make preparations and go deep. He chose to neutralize actionable information that would help us hurt our enemies.
