"I'm a gun owner... and if somebody breaks in my house, they're getting shot... Probably should not have said that, but my staff will deal with that later."

Said Kamala Harris, at last night's Oprah event:

1. Where does her prosecutor persona come into play here? She knows it's not good legal advice to encourage people to go ahead and shoot a person who has broken into the house but not yet physically threatened you.

2. That's why she said "probably should not have said that." She knows it's bad, but she almost seems to want to display herself as somewhat bad. She’s been trying to come across as one of us, a "middle class" American, fond of our guns and adamant about protecting our family inside the home. She needs to replace the image that she's that person who said — in 2007 video that went viral yesterday — "Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible and safe in the way you conduct your affairs."

3. Which Kamala is she — the one who walks into your house to check to see if you're being responsible or the one that shoots the person who walks into her home? I suspect she isn't really either person, but is simply saying what seemed worth saying at the time.

4. Don't get me started on the distinction between "breaking" into the home and "walking" into the home. I see it, and you can do your own legal research. I read her first comment to create an image of finding someone in her house and shooting him because he's there, and I read her second statement to say that she would use the authority of the state to gain access to the homes of people who are not opening the door and inviting her in.

5. She's portraying herself as the lone armed protector of her home, but we all know she has the Secret Service protecting her.

6. My favorite part of the quote is "but my staff will deal with that later." The staff will clean up after me. I'd like to see the Harris impersonators do a scene where Kamala is President, making wild, impulsive decisions, then laughing, and saying lightheartedly — as World War III begins — "my staff will deal with that later."

Pukefest last night. The word salad. They Hollywood endorsements. Meryl Streep's bullshit question about "what if Trump doesn't accept the results of the election." EVERYTHING was scripted. Nothing was organic except Kamala dingbat ramblings. Ozempic Oprah makes me want to puke. Nothing but empty feel good platitudes.

Is this was the suffragettes and feminists really envisioned delivering to the country??

Dixcus said...

I doubt she owns a gun. There are at least 2 reasons why she might claim to own one, but not own one:

1) Trump getting shot twice makes her a serious target for those who will seek revenge once the Democrats do finally manage to murder Donald Trump.

2) She wants to make herself seem less scary to gun owners. As if she's "one of us." But since she said it, that's how I know she's lying through her teeth.

Notice how nobody every asks any follow up questions: what kind of gun is it, has ANY HUMAN BEING ever seen her at a practice range (the answer is no). Where did she buy the gun ... at a gun show? Private sale? Some other venue that Democrats are trying to get gun sales banned at?

Kamala Harris is lying. She doesn't own a gun.

That this event is being taken seriously as a newsmaking event tells you WHY the fix is in. The media is perfectly happy allowing one of Kamala's donors and a Democrat Party lifelong stalwart "interview" her to get some news cycle out of her.

"Where does her prosecutor persona come into play here?"

Well, it was strictly persona. Could she even explain what she did, what sorts of laws she applied, how she argued cases, often she herself appeared in court, etc.?

"one of us, a "middle class" American, fond of our guns"

She may not be able to fake the sincerity, but her campaign is doing a good job, and Trump a bad job in calling BS.

"I suspect she isn't really either person, but is simply saying what seemed worth saying at the time."

Correct. Phonier than the big O himself. But at least there was control and purpose behind his manipulations. On second thought, was that better--installing a prog at the head of the deep-state apparatus rather than creating a prog puppet for the deep state to use?

"She's portraying herself as the lone armed protector of her home"

Wouldn't her nervous cackle suffice to scare intruders away?

Has anybody else noticed that she never actually claimed to own a gun?

"If somebody comes into my house, they're getting shot" is not the same as "I would shoot them with the gun I own."

She's very cleverly in the way she has been told to put this to suggest but not say she owns a weapon and would use it without actually saying that.

Dixcus said...

Kamala Harris has tried exactly ZERO cases. She wasn't a courtroom attorney, like you see in the movies. She's never been the lead attorney in a trial. She was a paper pusher.

There is a line from politicians I call the Fatal Phrase: "I'm a gun owner myself, BUT-" 'Fatal' because when you hear that you know they're full of crap and want to ban/restrict/make it as difficult and expensive as possible to own arms.

She hasn't said the Phrase, but she might as well have, especially with the "I don't want to ban your guns, but it won't violate the 2nd Amendment if I ban your assault weapons(if she can even define what she means with those words)."

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

There is an assumption in Common Law (Castle Doctrine) that a stranger who enters one's home uninvited means to do harm and self-defense is justified. That is not a belief I ever heard Kamala utter before, in fact a video surfaced this week of her as AG in California saying "even if you lawfully possess a gun we have the right to come into your home and see that it is safely stored.

And that is kind of the opposite of the spirit of her flippant remark to Oprah, which IMO she only made because she said in the debate that she is a gun owner. For now she will maintain that artifice.

Regarding Althouse's points:
1. California has a history of prosecuting this type of thing, and if this is what she truly believed she could have advocated for lawful self-defense instead of being part of that regime.
2. Yes this is damning.
3. Neither this is all an act, as was her stint as an alleged "prosecutor." She is an actress playing these parts, hence the stupid exaggerated gestures and facial machinations.
4. She is at least cognizant of the fact the State gets away with unreasonable break-ins all the time. She has expressed a wide range of views on the subject, most of them detestable. None I believe.
5. Oprah should have said this out loud. We all know everyone there was thinking it.
6. This would require an entity like SNL to actually appreciate comedy more than they do politics. Hell will freeze over first as long as Lorne is still alive.

She admitted owning a gun back in 2019. An aide called it a purse-sized pistol. She may have shot it once during Cali's mandatory training for a permit. I doubt it's come out of the gun safe since then.

If all that's true, I'd like to see her take it to the gun range and shoot. Then I want her to shoot an AR, which she intends to ban. It won't fit in your purse, but otherwise an AR is so much easier for a woman to use than a pistol. It has little kick and is easier to hold and aim. I'm very tired of all the posturing about "assault rifles".

Last night's Opera event (kudos, Althouse, for not calling it an interview):

"A married couple asked Kamala a critical question, and her response was insanely bad.

“We really would love to know what your plan is to help lower the cost of living,” the wife said to Kamala.

“Yeah, first of all, thank you both for being here. And yours is a story I hear around the country as I travel and, ummm, in terms of both rightly having the right to have aspirations and dreams and ambitions for your family and working hard and finding that the American Dream is—for this generation and so many recently—far more elusive than it's been, and we need to deal with that. And there are a number of ways. One is bringing down the cost of everyday necessities, including groceries.”"

Ann Althouse said...

Nope. It only requires one of the Kamala impersonator comedians to do a one-woman, one-minute long performance on TikTok.

Could use some whistleblowers to look up the CA and DC gun registries to see if she has ever gotten a permit in either place. It’s possible she was fast-tracked thru the process because of her position. (maybe CA even considers prosecutors to be LEOs and no process was needed?). More likely she was relying on the connected-person exemption and/or getting a staffer or her husband to take the rap if the gun was ever found.

I did a (very little) research and it looks like Massachusetts is somewhat more friendly towards shooting an intruder than Alabama. Massachusetts only requires a "reasonable belief" that the intruder intends to cause serious bodily harm while Alabama requires the defendant to prove that they were in immediate fear for their life and that they believed they had to use deadly force.

Late to the party, and not much else to say beyond endorsing the hostess comments.
I'll note that in Houston, there is a major criminal trial going on in which 2 people were killed after the opened fire on police conducting a no-knock raid. The defendant is an officer that filed allegedly false affidavit to gain the no-knock warrant and was one of the officers that shot and killed one of the residents. This was a big deal at the time (and now as the trial is occurring) because several officers were injured by the residents opening fire, but as the residents hadn't really committed the crime suggested by the warrant and had reason to believe whoever was busting down their down and yelling could be anyone wishing to cause them harm, their actions to protect their home and lives seemed justified.

A new category forms, the LLG or Life Long Gunowner. We used to have a commenter who began his statements advancing Dem talking points by saying: "I am a Life long Republican but..." Then would follow a standard Dem argument which the LLR sadly had to admit was justified in the light of recent Republican failures. This went on for years. For LLR, the Republicans never stopped their outrageous behavior all of which showed how right the Dems were. So now we have the life long gun owner, the LLG, who is going to justify Dem positions. Kamala is an example of the type. Listen to how irresponsible she is as she claims to represent gun owners. She imagines them saying: "somebody breaks in and I shoot." Somebody breaks in and I have a reasonable fear and I shoot is the law. Did she take the gun safety course that DC requires? It doesn't sound that and she probably didn't take an NRA safety course. So how did she train? And what is Kamala's weapon of choice - a handgun, shotgun or rifle? Does she have California permits? Does she carry guns back and forth with her between DC and California? on planes? Why doesn't she explain all this so other gun owners have an idea of what will be legal if she is President?

7 They attacked Midian as the Lord had commanded Moses, and they killed all the men. 8 All five of the Midianite kings—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—died in the battle. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

9 Then the Israelite army captured the Midianite women and children and seized their cattle and flocks and all their wealth as plunder. 10 They burned all the towns and villages where the Midianites had lived. 11 After they had gathered the plunder and captives, both people and animals, 12 they brought them all to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the whole community of Israel, which was camped on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho. 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 But Moses was furious with all the generals and captains[a] who had returned from the battle.

15 “Why have you let all the women live?” he demanded. 16 “These are the very ones who followed Balaam’s advice and caused the people of Israel to rebel against the Lord at Mount Peor. They are the ones who caused the plague to strike the Lord’s people. 17 So kill all the boys and all the women who have had intercourse with a man. 18 Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves.

It might have been an airport employee in the private terminal. The first person I heard announce for Trump in 2016 was a hospital parking shuttle driver, an older black man. After my surprise, I thought it a bit daring to say in Chapel Hill--as if they could fire him.

So I go home and there’s someone there and I don’t know whether they walked or broke in and I shoot them and whether that is a crime depends upon whether or not they had a badge and were, unknown to me, checking the combination on my gun safe and my head hurts. Salads have consequences.

She probably has a gun, and probably has had some training in concealed carry. She is unpopular enough to have had threats, I'm sure. It only takes one close call from a nut to terrify a person into realizing that carrying is the sensible thing to do.

As far as the rest of it goes: The tough grrl talk about being street canny is bullsh*t, but not like you might think. She would shoot somebody coming into the house, and she would have her staff clean up after her, and she will feel entitled to walk away form the encounter without baggage, charges, or convictions. Yes....let's not get carried away - don't confuse equinanimous thoughts with egalitarian thoughts. Don't try this at your home, kids.

In this situation, regardless of how the law is worded, I'd rather face an Alabama jury than one in Massachusetts. Especially if the intruder were of a race, religion, gender or class for which white leftists advocate unequally favorable treatment relative to middle-class white Christian men. In fact, if I shot an armed black man breaking into my house, I'd much sooner be tried by a jury comprised of rural black Alabamians than a jury full of white Harvard professors.

She owns or co-owns homes and condos in Los Angeles, San Francisco D.C. Does she keep weapons at each of those homes? What about the Vice-President's Residence, does she keep a weapon there? Does she have permits for those weapons? How long did she have to wait for those permits? Does she personally carry weapons outside her homes and does she have the necessary concealed carry permits?

Is there any chance she'll answer any of these questions?

“1) Trump getting shot twice makes her a serious target for those who will seek revenge once the Democrats do finally manage to murder Donald Trump”

Not going to help her, unless she practices a bit. And she doesn’t look the type. Her primary protection is Secret Service, and anyone who comes after her will know that they will have to get through them. And that won’t be easy - she’s the Deep State’s Presidential nominee. They won’t have rookie DHS agents with a 2 hour zoom call under their belts, but fully competent Secret Service agents.

Other than wanting, and expressing openly, a very strong desire to disarm everyone else, she's fine with herself having and using firearms for her own self defense. That her head can contain that contradiction speaks volumes about the volumes of unused head space she must have available for containing such contradictions.

Tsk, tsk. And her (allegedly) a lawyer. There are so many laws and regulations, and so much case law surrounding defensive firearms use that saying you’d shoot anyone who invaded your home is pretty much tantmountbto saying that you hope to end your days behind prison walls.

I'm with Tim on this item. Every DA I've met carries. I haven't met AGs, but I'd assume they would carry as well. Right now? No. I don't believe that the Secret Service would even allow her to carry and that goes for the President, I don't care who technically out ranks who. Secret Service would explain, as Bruce notes, that without routine training, either POTUS or VPOTUS carrying would just cause problems. I think we've all seen that temporary DHS agents serving as Secret Service detail without routine training just get in the way.

Leland said...

There are already videos popping up, not deep fakes, of then AG Kamala Harris saying, “Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible.”
That video expands on her "shouldn't have said that" and the otherwise vacuum in why she shouldn't to the average viewer. To those that care about gun rights, they already know the ATF under AG Garland has harassed enough legal gun owners with "responsibility" checks.

Megthered said...

Trump had a permit to carry a gun but the SS would not allow him to carry it while POTUS. I would bet my dog that Kammie has never picked up or shot a gun in her life. As stupid as she is, everyone is happy about that.

Am I the only one that noticed at about 26 seconds into the clip?

the 50ish guy sitting in the audience that they got a shot of he obviously didn't want to be there. He obviously had been sent to that interview and he was sitting there with his arms crossed and just very negative looking. When I got to that line about banning guns or you know pretending she wasn't going to ban the guns everybody started clapping. He kept his arms folded. Thee woman sitting next to him started signaling to him, snapping her fingers in his face to get him to applaud. awhen he finally applauded and then the woman next to to that woman high-fived her for getting the guy to clap because he sure didn't want to.

It cracked me up.

I don't know about you, but if somebody breaks into my house while I am present I will immediately feel physically threatened and in fear for my life as the person breaking in has already shown no respect for the law or my well being. I would also be in immediate fear for my life as I wouldn't know how many were breaking in and would want to reduce the number of assailants as quickly as possible to prevent them from ganging up on me. I would, of course, stop shooting as soon as they stopped moving towards me or anybody else in my house.

You should apologize, or at least watch your tongue. Do not diminish the terror of others just because you're cossetted in a safe place, the reasons for which cannot even be discussed. It's repulsively elitist and intellectually blind.
