"Kamala Harris didn’t hurt herself in her interview this week with CNN’s Dana Bash. She didn’t particularly help herself, either."
Writes Bret Stephens in a NYT piece with a meaner headline: "A Vague, Vacuous TV Interview Didn’t Help Kamala Harris."
But really, absorbing that meanness, isn't vague and vacuous what they were aiming for? I'm saying "they" not because I'm rejecting the she/her pronouns Harris has announced but because I presume her performance was developed by a team.Stephens identifies pluses and minuses. On the plus side, "she came across as warm, relatable." (Did she?)
She’s vague to the point of vacuous. She struggled to give straight answers to her shifting positions on fracking and border security other than to say, “my values have not changed.” Fine, but she evaded the question of why it took the Biden administration more than three years to gain better control of the border, which it ultimately did through an executive order that could have been in place years earlier. It also doesn’t answer the question of why she reversed her former policy positions — or whether she has higher values other than political expediency.
We can infer the answer easily enough. What's she supposed to do, come right out and own it?
The Stephens reaction is paired with a reaction from another NYT opinion writer, Michelle Cottle, who says, "I think that went pretty well, don’t you?"
Since you asked, I'll answer. Yes. Expectations were low, and there's no mistake for her enemies to feast on today. There were no big silences and no memorable passsage-of-time inanities.
The not getting flustered part was as important as the answers themselves. She absolutely needed to avoid giving any opening for the MAGA trolls — who are obsessed with machismo and performative toughness — to accuse her of being overly emotional or weak or easy to rattle. Amusingly, Bash looked more flustered than Harris did for most of the interview....
Yeah, why was that amusing... to Cottle? I'd have to guess that Cottle wanted Harris to win, and Bash's terror counted toward the Harris win. How presidential Harris was! She intimidated Bash. As if that means Putin and other dictators will be intimidated by Harris. But that inference is entirely unjustified. Bash was chosen because she was thought to be most inclined to help Harris. And Bash had the complex task of helping while seeming to be tough and properly journalistic.
Cottle projects her own worries about womanly inadequacies onto "MAGA trolls." Of course, they are out there, looking for material that can be used to attack Harris: They are "are obsessed with machismo and performative toughness — to accuse her of being overly emotional or weak or easy to rattle." But that doesn't mean Harris's own supporters are free of their own doubts and sexist stereotypes.

We haven't had an operational president in 3 1/2 years. If Harris gains office, it would be the status quo.
Vacuous.
Perfect.
Also - Viscous and vapid. Feel the joy!
"I presume her performance was developed by a team."
And how!
It whats shes been for 3 1/2 years no wonder ben stiller digs her
Our definition of 'leadership' has sunk to an egregiously low level. An empty woman who reads answers from cue cards will be our president. Oh well, why not? Her predecessor set the standard.
Vapidity? Check.
Vacuousness? Check.
Verismo? still waiting...
It is an edited video. How would we know if she wasn’t flustered? How long was the actual interview, as we only saw 18 minutes. Might there have been times to be flustered in those other minutes? It was a show meant to appease the question of why she hasn’t done an interview. Now she has. It better be enough for you.
My wife commented that all of the CNN cuts and teases made it feel like a two hour Dateline mystery that could have been thirty minutes long.
doesn’t answer the question of why she reversed her former policy positions
everyone Knows, that she HASN'T reversed her policy positions..
she's Just pushed them under a rug
You know who else will exploit inadequacies in Kamala? Putin, Xi, and various criminal crime bosses and terrorist organizations around the world.
“The Comma-la is the wisest of all the animal creations, for she only cackles when she gets egg in her face."

Stephens still can't even acknowledge that the Biden-Harris people deliberately opened the border and released chaos.
The chief sexual difference is brain function, prioritizing feelings or prioritizing structure. If you're a woman, it doesn't matter so much if you're stupid as well. For a man, it's fatal.
"took the Biden administration more than three years to gain better control of the border"
Partly by flying "asylum seekers" directly into the interior.
"What's she supposed to do, come right out and own it?"
LOL. Well, no. But, yes, it would be nice to get an explanation, you know, with reasons. I've never heard Harris speak that way, as any minimally competent lawyer has to do routinely. Can she?
"Bash was chosen because she was thought to be most inclined to help Harris."
Apparently married to one of the laptop 51. What are the odds?
"And Bash had the complex task of helping while seeming to be tough and properly journalistic."
In what sense is that task "complex"? By comparison with what? And emphasis on "seeming." What was "tough" about the actual questions? What does "properly journalistic" mean in this age of 24/7 Dem MSM propaganda?
There were no big silences and no memorable passsage-of-time inanities.
Cottle gives Harris credit for not "ducking" questions or "getting flustered."
well, that IS what editing is FOR
"Flustered". I can't remember a recent time a woman in politics was attacked for being emotional. The Women Are Wonderful effect means that any such line of attack is perilous. People, men and women both, feel protective of women's emotions.
Conversely, I can think of quite a few vicious attacks on men for displaying emotion, like Kavanaugh for being angry at the insane lies being used to smear him, or Rittenhouse tearing up on the stand while recounting the time that a mob of violent leftists tried to murder him as a child.
You know what was completely absent from that short interview, which was padded with extraneous material because they didn't get enough from the interview to make it last even 20 minutes? What was missing were Harris' - or Walz's - ideas for fixing things, the kind of statements that are designed to establish accountability.
They made no attempt to talk about what needs fixing, no attempt to show how they evaluate things, nothing but platitudes and slow pitches. And this now makes it over the bar for an acceptable performance for a Presidential / Vice Presidential candidate that wants to run our country, or represent those who really do. All of the talking heads were nodding sagely, yes, a strong performance. What absolute bullsh*t.
Why was Walz even there? How insulting is that, to Harris, that she can't conduct a one-on-one interview like a Big Girl? Why can't she even answer softball questions with something that relates to the question? And why is he still weaseling his way around questions about his lifelong habit of embellishment and lying for tiny drops of political capital?
Does he thing 'Wrong and Strong' is going to win the day on outright lies? Apparently so. He should have just stepped up and said that he was carried away by the passion of another school shooting, and misspoke about having combat experience. There ! Finished ! There would never be another question because he has explained his lie and provided context that could reasonably justify it. Not our Tim, though.
How can we accurately and honestly evaluate an "interview" that is taped and edited?
The DNC media is trying to package Kamala-lala-dingdong into a viable POTUS candidate. Only idiots like Inga, paid staffers like Rich and cult members like the rest of the usual suspects believe that she is capable of handling almost any executive level job.
I don't even know what to say about that interview. I expected little from her and yet, i am at a loss for words. Truly laughable performance but also shockingly terrifying. The consequences of electing this woman to be the leader of the (supposedly) free world would be utterly devastating to mankind.
You beat me to it, gilbar. Althouse says that there were no “big silences” and no wandering off into word salads. But we don’t really know that there weren’t any of this during the actual interview because the interview was edited down to 18 minutes.
I watched the beginning and even put up with the first commercial break, which was stupidly long. I started putting up with the second commercial break but in the middle of that, I vowed to turn it off if there was one more commercial, and there was. So that's enough. What's the point? There will be a transcript tomorrow.
I'd have to guess that Cottle wanted Harris to win, and Bash's terror counted toward the Harris win.
I’d have to say that that’s a pretty good guess, Professor. But did anybody see anything resembling terror on Bash’s part? Besides Cottle, I mean?
"there's no mistake for her enemies to feast on today. There were no big silences and no memorable passsage-of-time inanities."
It was taped and edited. She doubtless had the questions in advance and scripted answers. Dana Bash is essentially part of her team. And still it was pared down to 18 minutes of substanceless, uninspiring mediocrity. She didn't fall on the ice, but she didn't try any jumps or spins either. Send her to the Olympics!
Remember how the media were able to carry Biden along for several years and his supporters believed he was just fine until they were told to believe he isn't. If you're a Democrat, Joe Biden developed full blown senile dementia in one day, a medical first.
Harris gets between an F+ and a D-, and the media celebrates. Soft bigotry of low expectations.
What would it take for you to junk the “stereotype” jibberish, prof?
It feels as though men have to prove their worth by not seeming like a stereotype of a man, if they don’t it’s considered toxic.
I don’t want a president that is easily flustered, male or female. I do want the same set of rules.
There’s a third take, from Vivek Ramaswamy:
Kamala’s interview last night was a reminder that we’re not running against a candidate. We’re running against a *system*. They require a candidate they can control, which means having original ideas is a disqualification. That’s exactly why we get Biden, then Kamala, and so on.
Does any of this really make a difference? I doubt there are that many undecided voters that are going to be swayed by an interview. Even if Kamala had coughed up a word salad hairball, at this point, so what? There are numerous examples of her jabbering away, what does one more instance add? As for her answers, it’s the same shit we’ve been hearing all month. What would a great interview have sounded like and whose vote would it have changed?
So, if I understand the stereotype gibberish properly, Harris was chosen because she’s female and black by the One Drop Rule, but it’s a sort of bigotry to notice that that’s all she’s got going.
None of Kamala's empty headedness matters to liberal women and the men who want to please them. They identify with Kamala. They will vote for her no matter what. They will also support all voter fraud efforts.
I am emotionally prepared for a Harris win in November, engineered by those mentioned above. I will make perfect sense.
A Trump win will be a surprise upset like 2016. Problem is 2016 was a clean election. 2020 and 2022 were not. At this point I'm not counting on 2024 being clean.
The ladies get sidetracked with the shiny sexism object…the real question is since we can all accept this was a heavily edited bring you dad to work event, were the best things- the things that made air, worthy of the appropriate higher standard. If this isn’t the best she could do that’s a big problem because this is the best she could do…
Althouse: I presume her performance was developed by a team.
Imagine how excited the deep state and war neocons are to get her into office and do whatever the fuck they want. Kamala will bend a knee to her masters.
"Bash had the complex task of helping while seeming to be tough and properly journalistic." Talk about "performative toughness" of the quasi-journalistic kind. Bash is on the team and part of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuit.
The only way this "interview" could have been any softer would have been if it was being performed by Inga while nursing her.
Anybody notice Walz didn't deny lying about seeing battle or "carrying weapons of war"? All he said was he would never question anyone's service.
Complete douchebag.
Merriam-Webster:
As you might have guessed, "vacuous" shares the same root as "vacuum"-the Latin adjective vacuus, meaning "empty." This root also gave us the noun "vacuity" (the oldest meaning of which is "an empty space") as well as the verb "evacuate" (originally meaning "to empty of contents"). Its predecessor, the verb "vacare," is also an ancestor of the words "vacation" and "vacancy" as well as "void." All of these words suggest an emptiness of space, or else a fleeing of people or things from one place to another. "Vacuous" appeared in English in the middle of the 17th century, at first literally describing something that was empty. It acquired its figurative usage, describing one who is lacking any substance of the mind, in the mid-1800s.
“Kamala’s interview last night was a reminder that we’re not running against a candidate. We’re running against a *system*. They require a candidate they can control, which means having original ideas is a disqualification. That’s exactly why we get Biden, then Kamala, and so on.”
— - Vivek Ramaswamy
That was NOT an interview. It was a PR puff piece mixed in with "reality TV". Fully scripted, designed to look "spontaneous" and with enough twists and turns baked in to keep the target audience engaged. KH brought her "dad" with her to a staged "job interview" where she was given all of the interview questions before hand and had all the responses pre-screened, edited, fluffed, packaged, and focus group tested.
Compare and contrast to DT going on hostile networks for full spontaneous interviews.
The DNC should be EMBARRASSED that KH is the best they can do...
The terror was on Harris’s face. That, and anguish.
The person named Kamala is irrelevant to this election. Her policies (or lack thereof) are irrelevant. Trump isn't running against a candidate, he's running against a machine standing behind a candidate. He'd better wise up soon. The more he focuses on the puppet, the more he loses.
All of this over one short interview with a friendly interviewer at friendly news outlet. Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) have manipulated the circumstances to their advantage. Kamala Harris isn't qualified to be VP, let alone President, yet we're supposed to ignore all that and ramble on endlessly about this irrelevant, pointless, interview.
Meanwhile, the media have now covered some supposed minor dustup at Arlington Cemetery in more depth and length than an attempted assassination of Trump.
There has probably been no more significant political scandal in American history than the organized campaign of deceit by Democratic operatives and media personalities to hide the mental decline of President Joe Biden.
Any journalist interviewing Joe Biden's vice-president has a duty to ask, "what did Kamala Harris know and when did she know it?" If they don't, then it's not a journalistic interview, it's a campaign event.
With Walz in the foreground and Kamala sitting as far back as possible, she just didn’t look presidential.
The seating arrangement, the cold lighting, that always grim looking old man sitting next to her - none of that did her any favors.
Kamala's floundering. She's in way over her head. Bash's job is to conceal that and pretend it's not happening. She knows it. Kamala knows it. We know it. We're supposed to pretend we don't. The emperor's new clothes and all that.
Maybe Harris cleared a low bar, but President of the United States is the most demanding job on Earth. She'd fail and fuck up in a crisis. It's like being an anesthesiologist. Most cases go smoothly. But when the shit hits the fan, you want a smart, cool and good under pressure person. The stakes are life or death!
Dana Bash is a CIA plant.
Her maiden name is Schwartz (Jewish). She married Jeremy Bash, one of the 51 CIA/FBI/NSA agents who manipulated the 2020 election by signing a letter claiming that the Hunter Biden laptop was Russia disinformation.
She has no business being employed by an alleged "news" company. She is a government agent.
The CIA is running the United States and has been since they murdered John F. Kennedy.
Jeremy Bash was the CIA Chief of Staff under Barack Obama. Guess who his wife was?
This was the best they could manage with a friendly interviewer, access to the questions beforehand, written notes (you can literally see Harris reading her answers at several points), and the editing of the entire sham interview. And Harris still comes across as an airhead.
shes the face of the regime, there are many tentacles in the apparat, I'm not surprised it was this bad, she hasnt shown any aptitude since, except for destruction,
Now she and her "team" can say she's done an interview, let's move on. (I accidentally typed moron, haha, Freudian slip.)
Welcome to the Machine
Her performance was... edited. And this was the best they could do for her? You can be sure "flustered" and "incoherent" and "in over her head" lies on the cutting room floor.
“Why was Walz even there? How insulting is that, to Harris, that she can't conduct a one-on-one interview like a Big Girl? Why can't she even answer softball questions with something that relates to the question? And why is he still weaseling his way around questions about his lifelong habit of embellishment and lying for tiny drops of political capital?”
The thing that jumped out at me was that whenever she said anything, he would vigorously nod in agreement. There’s a name for it, but for the most part, it’s something that women do, and men do not. For me, it emasculated him, and weakened her, for needing it. The only demographic it is likely to help with are single women. The only demographic she doesn’t need to expand.
On the flip side, I watched a segment from a Trump campaign event with Tulsi. She, the Democrat, would confidently throw a question to him, and he would run with it. I would trust either one of them negotiating with our enemies, or with the nuclear launch codes far before I would trust Comrades Harris or Walz. What happens if Harris needs to make an important decision, that could get people killed? Would she freeze up, dither a bit, if she couldn’t get Walz to affirm her decision?
We once had Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, etc, now we have Biden, Harris. Whew, we've come a long way.
Our bar is so low now. "I think that went pretty well, don't you?"
It was the same for Joe Biden. As long as he made it through, didn't go off script, and didn't pass out, they would claim Joe gave the performance of a lifetime. And for Kamala? As long as she made it through, didn't go off script, and didn't pass out, some would claim it was very Presidential.
Can you imagine Thomas Jefferson watching this and reviewing it? Our standards are so far removed from anything resembling the nation that became the world leader. We are literally celebrating mediocrity. And not only celebrating it, but putting it in charge of the nation, and by proxy- the world.
I've never been sure why it's considered anathema to change your position on something over a period of years, over which time new information and different angles have become apparent. Isn't that what smart, engaged people do?
"Why was Walz even there? How insulting is that, to Harris, that she can't conduct a one-on-one interview like a Big Girl?"
Walz was terrible! He didn't shore up Harris. He dragged her down.
You watched that much and the Trump La Crosse Townhall? I couldn't do it. I can't give that much time to any politician.
no, we let them steal it, although I think Obama was the nadir in terms of those who have no love for our country, but they do love the State,
I've never been sure why it's considered anathema to change your position on something over a period of years, over which time new information and different angles have become apparent. Isn't that what smart, engaged people do?
If that were what she's doing, I'd agree. But where is the evidence that that's what she's doing? Apparently just last night she was still all-in on Bidenomics and the climate change thing and all; how does that square with now being a big fracking fan, for instance?
Only 18 minutes of Bash-Harris interview televised of 41 minutes filmed?
Democrats have a "worst-ever" candidate; Bash and CNN tacitly affirmed this with last night's heavily-edited video clip, half of CNN's friendly-face Bash interview apparently unwatchable. Only 18 minutes of her interview salvageable, despite her cheat-sheet notes, Harris is truly Pinocchio, telling more lies, more meaningless platitudes, her strings blatantly pulled by puppet-master.
Biden was elected to be the Democrats candidate, yet he was tossed aside and his replacement appointed. It's never happened before in the history of the United States, yet it is ignored. Heck, I'm not sure I've even heard the word "unprecedented" uttered once in the legacy media.
Yes, but if you're a sane, reasonable person then you ought to be able to explain why you've changed your mind.
Unless your reasons are deplorable.
it doesn't, but the Drone is satisfied
Lying is anathema, Bich- but of course you don't understand that. Even worse for you, Harris implied she was lying and that is how dumb she is.
They don't need policies or positions. They control who is counting the votes. Our elections are fake.
Indeed, but you should be able to explain why you changed your opinion. And on important issues, those explanations should be in depth and logical.
"The thing that jumped out at me was that whenever she said anything, he would vigorously nod in agreement."
I noticed the same thing and I think it was, in fact, the reason he was there- to do that head nodding affirmation of whatever it was Harris said. I honestly think such tactics don't work but I could be under-rating the effectiveness of it.
That's exactly why Democrat voters don't really care how incompetent, corrupt, or dishonest the nominal candidate is. For them, the Party is "the President".
They just need to theoretically be able to say she stood for an interview before they appoint her the President of the United States. It's all fake. That's why they used the CIA's Jeremy Bash's wife to conduct the interview.
She was chosen because they have her doing sex acts on camera and that keeps her big trap shut.
Here's CNNs Transcript. The first thing I noticed is Bash tries three times to ask the same question of the bat: "If you are elected, what would you do on day one in the White House?" ... "So what would you do day one?" ... "What about you?"
The question is a poor start because VP Harris is already in the White House, but Harris used the time to attack the previous administration to hers, as if they were the incumbent.
Disappointed (not surprised) that Walz was only asked to clarify his mischaracterization of his military career and wife's pregnancy. He is also given a moment to drag his child back into the political discussion. How about asking Walz's about his actions as governor in 2020 regarding the riots and his management of covid? Does Walz intend to protect civilians, which he didn't during the riots, or protect the government, which he did by calling out the NG to shoot paintballs at civilians standing on their front porch.

"Dana Bash is a CIA plant."
CIA plant interviews potted plant.
The "interview" was more like a bad infomercial. There were maybe 5 questions that Kamala had to answer interspersed with questions for her VP and lengthy puff pieces and then real commercials to drag out the entire spectacle. Everything heavily edited before broadcast.
@ Rich re: 9:16AM
As Joe Biden used to say, Come on, man.
It's easy to show un-flusteriness when it's left on the cutting room floor.
If she has changed her position, and she's the sitting VP, why not act now? The anathema isn't to changing the position but to hold any position as a personal value yet not act. If that value is so meaningless to you as to do nothing, then the failure to act seems a clear denunciation of the value.
Words mean things, Rich. When they don't, they are a word salad. "Anathema", "Position", "Change", "Information", "Engaged"; they all have specific meanings that prevents them from just being tossed into a sentence without care and an expectation that they make you seem to care.
That’s very interesting. Scott Adams has repeatedly said that our political leaders are chosen by the Deep State because they are susceptible to blackmail.
All the usual apparatchiks in the media praising Harris remind me of Jill Biden after the debate: You answered every question!
This is all some mind-numbingly dumb.
Rich, I agree with you. She shows how smart and engaged she is now by openly adopting Trump's policies on fracking, the border wall, and EVs. A few more like that and she could start wearing a red MAGA hat. Maybe even join RFK, Jr. in endorsing Trump.
"There has probably been no more significant political scandal in American history than the organized campaign of deceit by Democratic operatives and media personalities to hide the mental decline of President Joe Biden."
Imagine if FDR were president today. "He runs circles around his staff! Literally! And ultramarathons on weekends!"
CIA got a big assist by LBJ.
Rich: "I've never been sure why it's considered anathema to change your position on something over a period of years, over which time new information and different angles have become apparent. Isn't that what smart, engaged people do?"
What new information about the border do you think she has discovered in the last few weeks?
I wonder how many "takes" they had for Kamala on each question. What if she flubbed (with frumious fluster) the first time? What if they just do a retake and have her answer again? I bet the transcript won't show the earlier takes. No need to have the practice runs documented since it does not add any actual content different than the final cut. I wonder if later we will get a blooper reel...
I thought that a transcript was not going to be released. Hmm. If the transcript doesn't cover the entire 41 minutes, it's bogus. Even if they do release all 41 minutes, what makes anyone believe that, like the WH does, it wasn't edited to eliminate details unfavorable to Harris? I did not watch it, just read news reports. Both of these stooges gave non-answers to some of Bash's questions, even when the CNN whore gave them a followup. If I ever have another job interview in my life, I will bring along notes to assist me in answering non-typical questions. I'll see how that goes.
I imagine the Pravda reporters who had to interview Breshnev were pretty flustered as well. If the Fearless Leader screws up, well that's on you! None of that "Tis a poor workman blames his tool" for the Politburo.
I think Walmart puts more expectations on who can be a greeter than the Dems do with their candidates for president….that is because the Dems are a system that seeks power first and foremost.
Dear Althouse: I know you have a presence on Facebook, but you typically don't link to your blog there. This post is newsworthy, especially for those who think their minds are made up about Harris/Walz, on either side of the divide. Will I be opening up the floodgates to trolling if I share a link to this post there? I'll hold off until I hear back. If nothing else, I can post a link to the NYT article.
“ Rich, I agree with you. She shows how smart and engaged she is now by openly adopting Trump's policies on fracking, the border wall, and EVs. A few more like that and she could start wearing a red MAGA hat. Maybe even join RFK, Jr. in endorsing Trump”
I think that I have seen some red Harris/Walz hats. Not in person, of course, since the wearers would probably be openly laughed at, in the places I frequent.
CNN: “You said you carried weapons in war, but you’ve never deployed in a war zone…”
Walz: “… I speak candidly. I wear my emotions on my sleeves…”
CNN: “… You said that you were in war. Did you misspeak?”
Walz: “… My grammar is not always correct.”
LOL
And she slouched. She looked weary.
That an long time empty suit, a scatterbrain whose principle talent is giving blowjobs, and, an ex-reality TV star & real estate huckster are "our" choices for POTUS shows why it is pointless to participate in this farce. Don't follow leaders watch the parking meters.
Yes, yes, only women are portrayed as being "flustered". Hmm. What happens when we google "Trump flustered"?
https://theweek.com/politics/trump-flustered-by-the-harris-surge
"Flustered Trump still has no answer to Kamala Harris’s campaign" (The Independent)
"As Trump became increasingly flustered and overwhelmed, he couldn’t figure out how to say “Venezuela” and repeatedly short-circuited." (TNR)
"While on Fox News, former President Donald Trump got flustered when asked about his criminal justice plans." (The Courier)
Nah. Only women are accused of getting "flustered".
I can't recall when I first heard a politician use the "I misspoke" weasel expression when caught in a lie. Walz' dismissal of lying as a mere grammar misuse is even more pathetic, on par with Clinton's "depends on the meaning of "is".
“ If she wins, the world gets a message: The USA is not a serious country. It's just managing the decline. Who was the PM after Churchill? No one recalls. This century will be the Age of China.”
Which is really pathetic. China very much appears to be falling apart right now. They have a saying for “good enough”, which excuses shoddy work and workmanship. It’s the natural outgrowth of Communism. Their modern mega cities are rapidly turning into shitholes. Their middle class sank their savings into hire rise units. Now they are falling apart, with elevators and plumbing not working, etc. they are, of course, expected to keep paying. Massive fraud everywhere, with little answerability. Maybe one or two executions, for show, for billions in fraud. And not even that if the top management is politically connected enough. Amidst the biggest demographic collapse ever seen. They have these fancy new state of the art weapons systems, but as a result of this attitude, are unlikely to work very well.
Personally, I think that the (dot) Indians have a better chance dominating the new century.
giggles
"Why are you waiting to see if a woman gets "flustered"? "
We were not waiting to see if "a woman" gets flustered, we were waiting to see if Kamala Harris, who thus far has responded to every challenging question with a nervous, flustered cackle and to every assignment as VP with absolutely nothing, gets flustered (again). Sounds suspiciously close to saying that a woman cannot be criticized for her composure (or lack thereof).

That was her ex-husband who signed that letter. They divorced in 2007.
Now we head into Labor Day weekend. This will be forgotten and they can pickup with the Joy and America's Dad BS as we head into the traditional election homestretch. Voting starts soon (which is absurd, but themz the rules) and the media will try to drag this stink-bomb across the finish line. They just have to keep it close, then let the vote engineering apparatus they've built bring it home.
ding ding ding
You say there were no inanities or uncomfortable passages of time, but given that this was recorded, and only 18 minutes, we don't really know that, do we? How long was the full session? How bad was the stuff they cut out?
CNN: “You said you carried weapons in war, but you’ve never deployed in a war zone…”
Walz: “… I speak candidly. I wear my emotions on my sleeves…”
Claiming and implying that he is a combat vet is the very definition of a lack of candor. His response to the charges of lying repeatedly was to tell another lie and to imply once again he is something he is not, an honest man.
Talking about what he wears on his sleeves might not be the best choice of words under the circumstances.
I can hear Stiller looking directly at a stadium-ful of Trump deplorables and reciting a line from "Dodgeball", where he taunts the opposite team, "The Average Joes": "We're better than you!"
"Vague, vacuous, and flustered." Cole Porter, right?
With Harris and Walz both there did it seem more like couples' therapy than a television interview? Dana didn't turn to Tim and ask, "How does it make you feel when Kamala says that?"
Let down by politicians yet again. Kamala disappointed me by not saying that the very first thing she'd do is shut down the border and immediately begin deportations, so there's no reason to vote for her.
That was the point of editing. It would be very interesting to see the edited tape.
"She absolutely needed to avoid giving any opening for the MAGA trolls — who are obsessed with machismo and performative toughness"
So I guess JFK really would be a MAGA Republican if he were around today.
I wonder if Cottle could furnish some examples of Trump or Vance or any known MAGA people who have demonstrated the "obsessed with machismo and performative toughness" description she blithely tosses out.
Exactly. How do we know?
another instance of a democrat party member whose "grammar is not always correct..”
The Hill: Wes Moore apologizes for ‘honest mistake’ in claiming a Bronze Star
Moore stated on a 2006 application for the White House Fellowship that his service won him the award of a Bronze Star.
But Moore never actually was awarded the prestigious award, according to the Times investigation.
In a statement Thursday, Moore said he made an “honest mistake” in 2006 when he wrote on his application for the White House Fellowship that he had won the prestigious military award.
While serving overseas with the Army, I WANTED to receive the Bronze Star, i mistakenly assumed that my wishing made it so
"UNedited tape" you mean, I presume.
Transcript? Ha! They fooled you too. [All of us old-style journalists expected one as well, but noooooooo.]
You haven't seen the parts where he contributed. They were edited out.
Sure, but people will need to vote for the puppet in order for her to win. Therefore, focusing on the puppet is not necessarily a mistake.
If I had to slot KH into a role in society, outside of politics, that would be befitting of her intellect and talents, it would be at about the level of a school principal. I am honestly struggling to think of any loftier position of responsibility that she would be suited for.
I'm sure she was referring to Trump's reaction to being shot.
It wasn't clean in CA (I was there were the "harvest" went on a long time) , AZ, NV or the dense urban precincts. They were simply caught by a surge of votes for Trump they could not overcome
Agreed. Well put.
"Fine, but she evaded the question of why it took the Biden administration more than three years to gain better control of the border, which it ultimately did through an executive order that could have been in place years earlier."
--
Is that true? Does the Biden administration actually have better control over the border? I've seen no evidence of that being true. Unless they are talking about how the administration is now just flying in illegal aliens straight from other countries without them having to physically trek across the border into the Arizona and Texas. Heck, they are even tracking down those deported under Trump and bringing them back into the country.
The Harris interview did her few favors. If that's the best Harris can do, and her supporters count the interview as a success, then our country is in more trouble than I thought. I suspect her campaign is now going to say, "She has done her interview, no need for anymore" and the voters are supposed to just accept that and depend on her campaign surrogates and the media (one and the same) to provide the answers to anymore questions about Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
And not just a smart decisionmaker who is cool under pressure, but someone who is capable of communicating, whether in private, diplomatic settings, or more broadly to the nation and the world.
“The more he focuses on the puppet, the more he loses.”
He can focus on the puppet AND The System. Embrace the power of and!
Realizing this was the 18 minute highly edited version of the "interview" and this was the best she could do shud not is just pathetic. Of course we'll never see the full video nor a full transcript. So much for the benefits of "cruel neutrality".
Remember even the Big Cheat in 2020 barely crossed the finish line: 43,000 votes spread over three key states made the difference. Forty-three thousand votes, from (in Joe's words) "the most extensive voter fraud operation in history." [That Kinsley gaffe type quote really doesn't get enough play.
Harris will always struggle to meet the low bar set for her. That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone paying attention. Several photos are circulating purporting to show her reading answers during the interview. Unfortunately, believable. Regrettably, the alternative of sound centrist policies is accompanied by the unsound boorishness of Donald Trump. Regardless, I choose the alternative. I have grandchildren who ought not to be burdened by the dissolute practices of another Biden-Harris fiasco brought about by party bosses, the activist media and Trump hate.
His Happy Jack character from "Tropic Thunder" comes to mind, the object of the quip by Robert Downey Jr.'s character, "You never go full retard!"
+1 to MikeK- the Left really, really wanted a video of Trump ducking out of the Butler rally and got fist of defiance instead which is why it has been memory-holed by the media.
Maybe. I don't know if I'd call that "performative" but it was damned tough. What an awesomely masculine reaction. It probably scared Cottle just to witness it.
"Amusingly, Bash looked more flustered than Harris did for most of the interview"
After she just facilitated Trump ending Biden's whole career, as the meme goes, it's easy to understand why she would be flustered. If she pressed Harris too hard and blew up another Democratic presidential campaign she'd be finished as a mainstream journalist.
Still from the same circles, aren't they.
The number from the triangle countries has dropped about 100,000 off the peak annually the last two years, after shooting up to about 1M the first year they were in charge. So about 800,000 this year.
Bruce Hayden said...
“China very much appears to be falling apart right now. They have a saying for “good enough”, which excuses shoddy work and workmanship. It’s the natural outgrowth of Communism.”
My dad had a saying: “Good enough for government work.” The unspoken next line was “but not good enough for me.” I guess when everything is government work…
“Amidst the biggest demographic collapse ever seen.”
That’s why it was estimated they will need to take Taiwan by 2027 or 2035 or whatever the latest estimate has for the year.
As bad as that collapse will be, China’s birth rate is still higher than many other countries, like South Korea and Western European ones.
“Personally, I think that the (dot) Indians have a better chance dominating the new century.
I agree. After China starts to decline, they will be well positioned. But they have plenty of problems - like corruption for instance - that will limit them as well.
The timing of these "changes of mind" call into question whether they are sincere, don't you think? If they're authentic, then let her pen a series of op-eds explaining them, starting with "Why I Now Support Trump's Border Wall."
Overwhelmed and anguished…
Apparently over half of the 41-minute total interview was left on the editing floor.
Not a good sign for an interview when, in less than 24 hours, your opponent is using it as material in their ads.
Ace is no reporting they recorded 41 minutes but Kamala's team objected to more than half of it, especially her wandering nowhere answers on the green new deal and fracking. Apparently Bash did push for a more substantial answer and Kamala could not come up with a good one for either topic other than "I'll get it done."
So do it now and impress us, Kammy! Do it now!
Can someone please throw me a life ring. I'm drowning here in my own flop sweat.
OK. I meant what had been edited out.,
Dave Begley
"If she wins, the world gets a message: The USA is not a serious country. "
I'm pretty sure that message has already been sent and acknowledged by the world.
The whole thing was a fluster cuck.
I posted the NYT link. Should get a rise.
Kate is correct.
Vivek is correct.
So this was the best 18 minutes out of the 48 that was in the interview? And she didn't hurt herself was the bar?
What was left IN was pretty ugly, and I don't just mean the answers. I really do prefer better looking people on my TV. Bash is too unattractive, which isn't a problem if your are GOOD at interviewing, but is a problem when you're bad at your job and hard to look at as well. TV is a visual medium. Deal with it CNN.

Mike Boorda made an honest mistake when a superior incorrectly told him he was authorized to wear certain decorations. Moore and Walz, not so much.
And it’s a bipartisan issue. Troy Nehls still wears a Combat Infantry Badge despite being informed he was authorized for a Combat Action Badge instead.
The CNN site says "full transcript" but appears to be only the parts that were broadcast. So NOT the FULL transcript of the FULL interview. Just the broadcast transcript. CNN''s journalistic ethics are pretty damned low. What was the agreement? Could Harris's team retroactively declare answers she gave "off the record"? This is not a small indiscretion. Bash and CNN are actively creating propaganda for the Harris campaign and pretending it is an "interview."
The problem is that Trump has to get enough real votes to overcome the fraud.
You are assuming that the Democrats are wanting us to win such a crisis. I think that may not be true since Obama.
Bash looked more flustered than Harris did for most of the interview
Everyone who interviews Harris is terrified that Kamala will pop a rivet, Trump will get elected, and the interviewer will get the blame. Just imagine the thought process of the MSM: "If we can't drag this dope over the finish line, not only to we NOT get a cool black lady president, but we WILL get four more years of tRump! Just kill me now...!"
Notice the difference??? Too bad Dana Bash is a mouthpiece for the Progress party. Too bad people pretend she is capable. Don't wonder why we don't trust the lying left wing propaganda centers.....just listen to the difference. No wonder Kamala is afraid to go on Fox News. She won't get the answers ahead of time, and may have to actually answer a question for once.

Dana Bash had a friendly chat with Kamala and Walz, managing to avoid the most controversial issues. She even gave them multiple choice options on some of the questions.
Two weeks ago she interviewed J.D. Vance. Can you spot the difference in her approach?
https://x.com/mazemoore/status/1829543136340873582
Her "values haven't changed"? Well to paraphrase Harris of the past, "It was a campaign"
Remember her response on how she became such a supporter of the man she called a big ole racist
https://youtu.be/0iMYlJqsDcg?t=42
Forty five (45) minute "interview" edited & curated to eighteen (18) minutes, released video only covers the edited result. Twenty seven (27) minutes of word salad incompetence lost to history?
If you were uncertain who to vote for for President in November, after Biden's withdrawal and Harris's nomination, what has either candidate (Harris or Trump) done to change your mind?
We can infer the answer easily enough. What's she supposed to do, come right out and own it?
No, she's not supposed to be that kind of morally reprehensible lying sack of shit.
Since you asked, I'll answer. Yes. Expectations were low, and there's no mistake for her enemies to feast on today. There were no big silences and no memorable passsage-of-time inanities.
Apparently it was a 40+ minute "interview" which they edited down to 18 minutes. So your claim is not supported by the evidence. They just edited those out.
Cottle gives Harris credit for not "ducking" questions
"Trump says you're lying about being black. What do you have to say to that?"
"Next Question"
That's the Platonic Ideal of "ducking the question"
Trump’s statements are decontextualized, while those from Democrats are relentlessly scrutinized. The result is false equivalencies that normalize Republican liars.
Rich: "Trump’s statements are decontextualized, while those from Democrats are relentlessly scrutinized. The result is false equivalencies that normalize Republican liars." What? WTF? Seriously? We know that Rich is a Dem because he spouts lies and conclusions that are so far from reality, expecting for people to take him seriously. Can't. Stop. Laughing. ( I think Drago is laughing so hard he cannot catch his breath)
Dave Begley,
Kirk remembers: Clement Atlee -- "... a modest man, with so very much to be modest about!"
Duh.
We're watching Affirmative Action and DEI come to fruition.
Arguably the most important job in the world being given to the least capable person to ever apply for it.
Hey guys, Kamahaha was just being her Hindu self. She would not take a set position on anything. Just act like a source of goodness.
Why should she take positions? Her only role is to preside over the Party running DC while the USA is systematically being taken down and sold for parts.
Aptitude For Destruction… say, wasn’t that the title of a Guns N' Roses album?
Most MAGA, a slur flagrantly used, are women. I'd say 3/2. I speak with authority, having organized in this movement for years. So nothing the MSM is telling you is accurate.
Flustered. All politicians get flustered. It's less likely in people who are in public service or private industry and actually doing the jobs they are paid extremely well to do, unless they are narcissistic sociopaths with nothing else to fill their empty souls. I have run campaigns.
And if I watched my candidate perform that shit-show, I'd sever the contract.
