"... to everyone who subscribes to its site. The move is a throwback to the publication’s roots as a campus weekly in the late 1980s. But it is also emblematic of a growing trend in the media industry — trying new ways to attract and retain digital subscribers.... The print edition is part of a variety of perks that the company plans to offer online subscribers, who pay $5 a month, said Ben Collins, the chief executive of The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron. The company plans to offer invites to live events, access to The Onion’s archive of physical papers and sponsorship of ambitious editorial projects, such as a video titled 'The Perfect One-Pot, Six-Pan, 10-Wok, 25-Baking-Sheet Dinner,' Mr. Collins said...."

As for "roots as a campus weekly," let it be remembered that the campus was The University of Wisconsin, here in Madison. I remember (and loved)
"Jim's Journal."

An NYT subsidiary.
That site stopped being funny years ago, but I absolutely loved The Onion in the late 90s. I bought two t-shirts from them back then, that read "Let the Fucking Begin," and "Stereotypes Are A Real Time Saver."
Who needs The Onion when you have the Babylon Bee?
I think this is worth a try. But only if they up their game to say, Babylon Bee level. Modern politics is almost too absurd to mock.
The Onion went rancid years ago. It's long past its compost time.
To me, 99% of the humor in The Onion or The Bee is contained in the headlines. The articles themselves are almost anticlimactic. YMMV
The Onion quit being funny when they bent the knee to the Left.
You can buy a book of Jim’s Journal cartoon on Amazon.
The Onion's problem is they are not funny anymore. Trying different distribution channels is not going to fix that.
OMG. That was hilarious. But no, The Onion stopped being funny after they moved it to NYC.
People in SF won't notice a difference from the Chronicle.
back at the turn of the century, when i was still working; i got the WSJ print edition, which doubled as a convenient table cloth while eating lunch at the food court in the Skywalk*. Since i now eat lunch at home (on a clean table) i don't need a paper table cloth; so i don't need a print edition
Skywalk* do other cities have Skywalks? if not? Why Not?
I think that's the Bee forte, the headline is 99% of the funny.
They're not built on tundra?
"The .... site is hoping a newspaper with fake stories .... will lead to real money."
In the NYT? Ironic

Cincinnati used to have a Skywalk downtown. Hanging out on the Skywalk was a thing in high school, much like hanging out at the mall was for suburban teens. It would have shops, movie theaters, etc, just like a mall.
The Wikipedia article gives a fair overview of the reasons for its rise and the reasons for its demise. One quibble I have though. The public Skywalk was inspired by several of the buildings already having connections for workers to move between them. The Skywalk opened these connectors to the public and expanded the system throughout much more of downtown.

I recall finding one of The Onion's last print editions near the Metro in DC. It was amusing. This must have been 20 years ago. I brought it back to Richmond, and left it in the break room. It caused quite a commotion. Apparently, there were some risqué articles that abused the sensibilities of the meek.
Mike (MJB Wolf) correctly mentions..
That Des Moines LITERALLY has an Entire Glacial Lobe named for it

In 2016 The Onion became a Hillary supporter's public loudspeaker.
To hell with Hillary, to hell with The Onion.
Exactly
Does this mean the professor is going to trawl the NYT a little less? Any hoo, an ex-Communist told me once that she read Pravda for the truth and the NYT "for the effin lies" and now the Onion paper edition can perform the same comparison for us vis-a-vis State media? Big shit journo James Surowiecki wrote on X today that people who are complaining about inflation are just plain mistaken. (GIFY) So much for State media. Clearly we need a court jester kind of media hybrid that can tell the truth but without actually saying it.
I think people miss the tactile feel and sounds of the printed page, in particular the newspapers. There's something settling about reading the paper in a comfortable chair.
Walter Kirn has been publishing an old-fashioned broadsheet called County Highway, issued as a bi-monthly. Some very good human-interest journalism and top-notch writing.
I never cared much for the Onion I was more of a National Lampoon reader. I still have my copy of the National Lampoon Annual Yearbook that was the inspiration for Animal House.
FARK did the same thing. It went woke and I lost interest.
The Onion still exists? Who knew?
Oh. I have that, too!
