"There's nothing beyond our capacity when we act together. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Remember who the hell we are. We are the United States of America."

Said President Biden, next to the plane out of which emerged those freed by Russia in the prisoner exchange.

I'm glad the erstwhile prisoners are home, and I'm glad Joe Biden still walks and talks among the living, but I don't believe "There's nothing beyond our capacity when we act together," I don't believe we are "working together," I think it's interesting that a President said "Nothing. Nothing. Nothing," and I don't approve of the intensifier "the hell" on this occasion.

Most importantly, I want to muse over the announcement "We are the United States of America." It's not just a Bidenism. It's very widespread. It's "American exceptionalism." But the Russians got their prisoners back too. Is Putin out there saying «Мы — Россия»?

I get a Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair vibe. But what is grand about a prisoner exchange?

It's a desperately needed win. If you want to call it that.

We are all just glad he waited until now to release a bunch of murderers and spies to make this deal right before the election.

If he did it a year ago it wouldn't have been a campaign prop.

Also important that Biden said "Why didn't he do it?" referring to the fact Trump didn't get them released.

But Biden doesn't even know they were taken under his watch.

Especially where their prisoners are real criminals while most (or all) of ours are political prisoners.

The things an incumbent can do in support of his campaign!

Compare that to mere dollar contributions and expenditures.

Why wasn't this deal done a year ago?

Ann Althouse said...

And yet the incumbent is stuck with the reality of everything that goes wrong.

I see "The American job market significantly slowed in July, the Labor Department reported on Friday, adding 114,000 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis."

Biden/Harris, the incumbent, is encumbered — burdened (not unburdened by what has been).

Joe Biden: the encumbered incumbent.

Come on man, we got some hostages released for a few trained assassins, But no 6 billion dollar sweetener. I guess Crooked Joe had no reason to fund our enemy like Smiling Obama wanted to fund Iran.

I suspect Moscow wants to act nice now that Trump is going to be in charge of our military again in 6 months.

Maybe he thought the prisoners were astronauts back from Mars?

I think he was clearly confused. I was watching a clip of the event as it ended and as he and Harris were walking away, Biden walked up the steps of plane the released prisoners had just gotten off. May have thought it was AF1? I don't know, anyway, Kamala and a couple of guys in suits stood outside just kind of looking around waiting for him to come back out.

Zero doubt we gave the farm away and this was purely politically motivated. This follows the the absurd proposal to pack the SCOTUS, which only acts to further undermine the credibility of an institution they purport to care so much about. They'll do, or destroy, anything necessary to retain power.

My best guess is there was some sort of routing error and the President's thoughts travelled along the same neural pathway where he keeps the lyrics to pop songs.

I guess it depends, if you're one of the returning prisoners, you probably think whatever the price was and whatever motivated the US to pay it, it was perfectly correct.

"...what is grand about a prisoner exchange?"

Not much, other than the families who get to have their loved ones back. In the big picture, however, an exchange only encourages more exchanges in the future.

There are at least 6 American hostages being held by Iranian-backed HAMAS in Gaza that Joe Biden isn't even trying to get back.

Why? Because we don't have any Palestinian prisoners in our possession. Now why would that be? I think one reason it might be is that Joe Biden has been funding HAMAS, through Iran, by releasing billions of US-captured dollars from the Iranian hostage crisis when they stole a piece of the United States (the US Embassy in Iran is American soil.)

There are some things that the United States, led by its arch enemies within its own borders, are unable to accomplish.

Why do we have Americans in Russia in need of being exchanged? And why do we have Russian prisoners? Are they spies?

If they are spies, I’d think this sort of exchange should be done under the radar. But it’s just a ‘marine’ and ‘media’ people. Under what circumstances were they imprisoned by Russians, if they truly are what they are? If so, what Russians did we send back in exchange? I’m pretty sure the US is not in the habit of imprisoning random Russians off the street.

But it looks like Biden is doing good things for America, so thumbs up, I suppose.

Yes. A country led by a foul-mouthed senile hack that makes sordid deals.

"I don't believe "There's nothing beyond our capacity when we act together," I don't believe we are "working together,""

Correct. The urge to shovel BS even on this occasion is quite something.

"But what is grand about a prisoner exchange?"

Nothing. It's a humiliation. The only thing grand is the blowhard grandstanding. Showing who the hell we are. As Vlad and Xi and the mullahs well know.

Dixcus said...

Bill, in Texas, said: "I hope all American citizens are out of Russia now."

They aren't. Russia still holds many OTHER American citizens in its jails inside Russia (Mark Fogel for example).

Biden traded ONLY to get back CIA assets, not other Americans being unjustly held.

He only got the spooks out. Not real people.

This is like saying, My wife and I got in a big fight. I dared her to walk out on me and she did. Now we're separated and headed for divorce. My lawyer is costing me a fortune and he says my wife will probably get everything. But on a positive note, yesterday she wanted to take the riding lawnmower. I guess her new place has a big yard. So I told her she could only take it if she let me keep our hamster and guess what? She agreed! This feels like win!

A prisoner exchange with Russia. It shows how little has changed. It shows that Biden Administration hubris has taken us back into a cold war with Russia.
And how is this something Americans did together? Nobody even knew this was in the works until it was done.

Ampersand said...

Prisoner exchanges incentivize hostage taking. They provide a cushion of safety for the malefactors.

A prisoner exchange should be followed up with severe limits on future economic and cultural exchanges. Anyone pulling a visa for Russia should be required to acknowledge Russia's past practices of jailing innocents, and should agree that, in the event of their imprisonment, no exchange should occur.

The real story here is Biden blamed Trump for not getting the prisoners released during his term, despite the fact that 3 of the 4 released were taken prisoner during Biden's administration. Not that Biden remembers that. I'm not sure he cared either. He certainly does not care about our hostages in Gaza. Also, not that our press corps even noticed the timeline issues.

Releasing assassins to free (most likely) innocents is not a good policy. It just encourages taking more hostages whenever Putin wants another one of his murderers back. I am glad we got our people out, but getting out people out just for more of our people to be taken hostage is not a good exchange.

I was listening to NPR, some bluegrass. Suddenly, an interruption, for Breaking News. Then, the news announcers started in, with the low, thrilling intonement that The President was expected any minute. Speaking in that low voice, the one usually reserved for PGA live broadcasting, during the putts. They must have wasted nearly an hour on this minor news story: The backstories, the events, the masterful hand of The President, the wrap-up, so forth.

If you hate the Legacy Mainstream Media, you don't hate them nearly enough. They are Government-sanctioned Propagandists playing handmaidens to corrupt pols.

Within a month or two, more arrests will be made of US citizens in Russia, to hold against the capture of Russian assets abroad. Hostage taking works. It works for Russia, it works for Hamas, it works for anyone facing a feckless, gormless, amoral, unprincipled opponent. And that is the Biden administration right there, for certain.

I wish I lived in a world in which negotiations over the release of US citizens imprisoned by the Russians worked like this:

The US drops a bomb from orbit on a major Russian radar installation in the Russian Arctic. After the debris settles, the US President sends this message to the Russian President: "That's 1".

I think we may have to wait for the Vance Administration (he was a Marine, you know; those guys are crazy, they could do anything). I can be patient.
