The Washington Post shines its sharp investigative journalism at Kamala Harris.

There's so little time left, but kudos to The Washington Post for hitting the ground running.

On the front page right now: "Kamala Harris’s cooking wisdom: 7 tips from her kitchen videos."

2 MORE THINGS:

1. It's interesting to see the use of a video clip that emphasizes Harris's Indian heritage so soon after Trump stirred the pot about Indian heritage possibly dominating Harris's self-identity.

2. Forefronting cooking in the presidential election reminds me of the classic "First Lady Bake-Off" that started in 1992 and pitted Hillary Clinton against Barbara Bush:
The competition was inspired by a political gaffe made by Hillary Clinton in 1992... In response to questions about her career and the Whitewater controversy, she stated that "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession, which I entered before my husband was in public life."...

Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, said that Clinton's remarks "stepped outside the bounds of what was seen as the traditional role of first lady, potential first lady [...] the price she paid was being placed in the midst of a cookie bake-off."... According to media science professor Tammy R. Vigil, media coverage of the bake-off portrayed the women participating as adhering to traditional gender roles and published anecdotes about their domestic lives that contributed to this image.

And isn't it funny? 30 years later, traditional gender roles are still front-and-center in American politics. The Democratic Party candidate is, once again, a woman. Back in 2016, Bill Clinton competed in the (re-named) cookie contest. He won, too, just as Hillary had won in 1992 and 1996, and with the same recipe: "chocolate chip cookies." (Yes, I think we all know that recipe.) And the new female Democratic Party candidate isn't even using her husband to handle the cooking. She's dicing an onion, right there on camera for us. In 2024. I suppose she could have just fulfilled her profession, but what she decided to do was go on TV with Mindy Kaling and dice an onion.

I was going to make a sarcastic comment but I can see several have already beat me to it. In retrospect, the Democrats waiting to the last minute to make the switch was brilliant. If Kamala had to go through the normal rigors of a campaign she would have quickly eliminated herself as she did in 2020. This way the always complaint media can stick to cooking advice for a few months and then, presto, the Obama mafia is back in the White House.

Here's a great cooking video by Kamala, cooking dosa ... one of her family's home country of India's most famous dishes. She cooks it with Mindy Kaling, star of and lead writer of the comedy series The Office, who is also Indian. They made this video after Kamala became the first Indian-American Senator in US history.

Most people, Kaling says, don't realize that Kamala Harris is an Indian. Anyway, here's how Kamala Harris makes Indian dosa.

Add that to her Canada raising where hating Americans is rule #1 and you understand her laugh is about how easy it is for her to destroy us.

In the mid-90s, a co-worker and a few of his friends used to enjoy going to an Indian restaurant for lunch. They’d all pile into co-worker’s Saturn and have their Indian food, enjoy conversation and it was all roses. Until one fateful day.

On that day, one of the friends had a bad… no it was a horrible reaction… to the spicy curry and yogurt he’d ingested and he projectile vomited his lunch all over the back seat and his companions on their way back to the office. Later, repeated attempts at cleaning the interior of that Saturn sedan proved fruitless and later, my co-worker successfully sold it to a buyer who had presumably lost their sense of smell.

And believe me when I tell you, what transpired that day was much more amusing than I could ever relate it.

Yes, these are the greatest leaders America can muster right now, apparently. One hopes that if we end up in the ditch, we'll survive and can all get out and walk back to the road with new insight on what we need in the Presidency. Two things from me:

1. Whoever up there said she doesn't know how to use a knife, I agree.

2. With regard to chocolate chip cookies: I am a good cook and baker. But I have a friend who has less technique than I do by a lot, whose chocolate chip cookies I cannot touch. I don't know what it is. I've followed her recipe exactly. I've watched her make the dough and done it exactly the same way. Yet when she makes these cookies - seriously, they're the best I've ever had, whereas when I make them they're just good.

Ok, a third thing. 3. Ugh, this is going to be a long few months. Followed, I fear, by four to eight more long lousy years in which we will continue to be told that the economy is great! and there's no problem at the border! and catastrophic climate change is happening so we must all cook on f*ing electric stoves!

Sort of surprised there wasn't a recipe section.

IMO, any self respecting woman who has worked to get to this level, would refuse to be put in the kitchen for this fluff piece in 2024. Not that there is anything wrong with cooking - but it absolutely has NOTHING to do with running for the Presidency of the United States of America.

The machinations in the Democrat Party represent two competing groups: The Autocrats vs. The Communists. It is the game of the century and the winning group will get its hands on $200 trillion dollars to divvy up amongst themselves over the next 50 years.

Barack Obama, obviously, is in the Chicago Communist tradition with the Clintons. Kamala Harris represents the California autocrats (Pelosi/Newsome/Feinstein families).

California is currently winning, but the convention will be held in Communist Chicago.

It is not a foregone conclusion that Kamala Harris will win the nomination. The Communists may off her and blame Trump.

Pretty much my take as well, except there's a larger leadership group on both sidesaround the figureheads, not just Obama vs. Pelosi. That video had such an interesting way to dice an onion that I studied the video closely and tried to imagine myself dicing that way. I tried to imagine holding the onion and choosing which one of my knives to use. OK, so Kamala is balancing the onion on its end tip. I imagined doing that and my hand slipped and the onion tilted and I lost a finger tip. Oh well, so I went back to study the technique more closely and I there was Kamala peeling a brown onion but a purple onion emerges. Martha Stewart doesn't show this kind of onion in her onion types but ... Indian cooking ... oh well. Ok, get a purple onion. [Cut the bottom off to make a stable platform though Kamala did not do that] Cut the top off. Then slice downward part way and turn the onion and slice downward again but crossways - in other words, you dice on the onion. But this time around (in my imagination) I sliced into a finger but luckily the onion was purple so the blood didn't show much.
How did she do it? The more you look the harder it gets to copy it. You see, the Senator cut off the top and slashed across the top. But when the camera did a close up of the partially diced onion it was looking at the side of the onion as you can tell by the bulb shape. Slices across the top of an onion show a ring shape and slices across the side show the bulb shape, at least when I slice.
Besides that, Kamala's knife must have been incredibly sharp because the onion just parts before the knife without Kamala having to bear down and thus likely tilting the onion and cutting herself - as would have happened to me on my cutting board with my Wusthof Santoku knife.
So I don't know. I've pictured the whole thing to myself to see if I could learn a new technique. Maybe the brown/purple onions from India have a different interior so a longitudinal and a horizontal slice look different than on slices on the common old onions I've seen. Or may be the whole thing is a special DC way of cutting that can't be conveyed by the edited video. Sum it up: As we know now, Kamala is good with a knife. Even in just cutting an onion, she is, let's say, unbelievable.

SweatBee said...

Who wouldn't suspect a tan-skinned person with a name like "Kamala" might have Indian ancestry? Is Kaling referencing AWFLs who think ethnicity-dropping makes them look cool?

I have never seen anyone use that technique to cut onion. It seems time-consuming and dangerous. Was she trying to save the other half for later?

mikee said...

VP Harris has a dicing technique guaranteed to cut her fingers sooner rather than later. It works, usually, and allows the retention of uncut onion for the next meal. But it is also incredibly efficient at sending a blade into the thumb or the other fingers supporting the onion on its round end.

My momma always told me never to let the knife edge move towards any part of myself. I haven't cut myself with a kitchen knife since I was 9. VP Harris is asking for a cut thumb.

Michael K said...

I sewed a finger tip back onto a colleague's wife many years ago. She brought it to the office in a paper towel, as I recall. It healed back fine in spite of the time delay and lack of blood supply, but it was just the tip. I gave her an apple slicer later as a gift.

Ralph L said...

America's Test Kitchen recommends slicing off the stalk tip, cutting it in half to the root end, peeling, then laying each half flat on your board and cutting down but not all the way to the root end, so it holds together until you slice crossways, as thinly as you like. I usually cut radially, but they don't, they make one horizontal cut after the vertical ones. I've found it efficient and safe.

Ralph L said...

My momma always told me never to let the knife edge move towards any part of myself.

Mine would slice fruits and vegetables back toward her thumb with a small knife. Guess she had a callous--and a dull knife.
