I read several blogs every day as well as Althouse, including Legal Insurrection, Powerline, Instapundit, and others, when I have the time. I rarely read the comments, because most of them are just an echo chamber. I don't want to live in that hive, whether it is all pro-Trump or all anti-Trump. But Legal Insurrection is also hosted by a law professor, like Althouse, so I often read their comments. They are almost all pro-Trump, but here are some of the comments they posted on the Trump/Musk interview, which makes me think that the comments here on Althouse are not reflective of the conservative/Trump supporters view posted here:

"I am not a #NeverTrumper. But you need to get your head out of your butt and see that what he’s doing is destroying his chances of winning. I want him to win. I am going to vote for him. But your idol worship crazy is just self-defeating. You want Trump to win? Stop backing his every false move and step that will only alienate the potential swing voters he needs. He has your Trump cult vote, and he has my anything but the commie-commie ticket vote.
But what about the votes he actually NEEDS, the ones he does not have? This self-indulgent blather is not going to win them over. It’s going to alienate them and make them think he’s self-absorbed, butt hurt, and a bit of a whiner. NO ONE likes a whiner. Elon Musk gave Trump an opportunity to reach people, redefine Kamala, and define himself. He failed on every point there.
Again we have fallen behind, right now the media is winning. If Trump can’t bring himself to do a good job he should promote J.D. Vance to head of the ticket so someone who actually is doing a good job could bring us back ahead.
Attacking Harris as joyless in his interviews makes him look well petty and like he doesn’t care about real issues (otherwise he would bring them up).
I voted against him in primary, I voted for him for president, I donated to his presidential campaign after he won, and I am voting for him in November.
I even very consistently defended him when he moderated the Republican Platform in ways I don’t like (i.e. on abortion) because once someone wins the nomination we do have to back their judgement on what policy preferences could win. I am not lying to myself or anyone else that the train wreck last night was a smash hit for reaching the people we need to win over.; 8/13/24, 6:42 PM

tim in vermont said...: This is one of those moments where we get a good idea who is telling the truth and who is lying. So let's give Kursk a month or so to play out. See if Ukraine captures the nuclear power plant, etc. Then we will know if this is real, or just another propaganda offensive to take attention away from what is going on elsewhere, where the Russians seem to be advancing relentlessly.

Otherwise, it's just one more exercise in mind reading. It's like when Ukraine claimed to knock out that early warning radar system in Russia, and suddenly ATACMS started getting through, you knew that despite Russian denials, they had probably done it. Or when Russia claimed to have nearly wiped out the Ukrainian air force within the space of a month with a new long range air defense feature, and air launched missile attacks on Crimea seemed to stop, which indicated that despite Ukrainian denials, the Russians were almost certainly telling the truth.

tim in vermont said...: OK, I can check off one of my old man projects. A couple of decades ago, I traveled to France, and the French I learned at school was useless. Nobody could understand me, and I could only understand people who spoke very slowly and simply.

So as an old man, I listened to French music, to improve my listening and accent, listened to French language podcasts, studied vocabulary, but I still felt that it was all a waste, because if I turned on a French movie, I had to use the subtitles in French to understand what was going on. But when I got to France recently, I found myself quite able to converse in French with the people I encountered who spoke no English (you have to get off the beaten path to find such people) It was like I woke up one morning and could speak French.

So I think what happened is that like with any mature language, with a history, and a literature, speakers of French do "code switching," speaking to other native speakers they freely use idioms that are all but impenetrable to non-natives, for instance the phrase for "Do you want to get high" is exactly the same as "do you want to fuck?" and you are supposed to understand by context. You have to live there quite a while to be able to confidently sort through this stuff, and this idiomatic and informal French is what they speak in movies and TV shows. BUT! If they know they are talking to a non-native French speaker, they will switch to a standard French, the kind that we are taught in classes. My problem was that we didn't have the tools back in the day to hear French whenever we wanted to on YouTube or wherever, so my listening and accent sucked.

So my advice, if you are learning a language, is to set your goal, and if your goal is to speak with French people who speak no English to get around in France, order food, buy shoes, whatever, don't worry about whether you can easily understand French movies without titles, just learn standard words and work on pronunciation, and if you want to be able to understand media, and conversations between native speakers, understand that you have set for yourself a much higher bar, much more difficult to achieve.

I am sure it's the same with any language you want to learn. Anyway, it was fun speaking French with French people, and I will be going back for a friend's destination wedding in 18 months, so maybe I can raise the bar a bit myself.

The trip did accomplish one thing, before the trip, if I tried to read a novel in French, it was a chore, and was hard to follow the plot, but now, even as I have to look up many words, I read them without having to make a forced effort.

I just watches a 2-hour documentary on the War of 1812, and suddenly it was obvious when historians were hedging, misdirecting, leaving important stuff out, after two years of trying to sort through the lies from both sides in Ukraine, you begin to hear things differently.

What was also funny was a comment that the "Republicans" wanted this war. "Republicans" didn't exist at the time, Thomas Jefferson wanted the war, and said "Canada is ours for the marching" and while they included the quote, they did not attribute it to him. Popular history is just propaganda, and the war of 1812 primarily served to unleash the genocide of the Indians on the North American continent, which the British were trying to hold back. Côte d'Azur was way too English speaking for me, and I should have known that, but it was still something to see, and there were a couple of Uber drivers who preferred my bad French to their bad English. Hot as hell there too. I was in Aix en Provence, where it was around 100F, but humidity was only 40%, so it wasn't really that bad at all, but once I got to where the humidity was higher, it was hard to take.; 8/14/24, 6:32 AM

MadTownGuy said...: I took only one year of High School French, but was pushed forward to second year by the teacher, who was also my Spanish teacher in freshman year. Didn't use it a lot, but tried to keep up what little I had.

We visited Montréal a few years ago, and while I couldn't grasp what the cashier said over the speaker at the gas pump, when I went inside I was able to understand that my card couldn't be read at the pump. I read the highway signs just fine, and had a bit more practice at a souvenir store before we crossed into Ontario.

My favorite French movie is Amélie, with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg a close second. Watching them without subtitles helpse keep up my comprehension, and once in a while I browse Le Monde.; 8/14/24, 8:15 AM
