"Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr to Star in... revival of 'Glengarry Glen Ross,' David Mamet’s classic play...."

The NYT reports.

Just yesterday, we were talking about Keanu Reaves in "Waiting for Godot" on Broadway.

From the "Glengarry" piece:
“Glengarry” is one of the plays that solidified Mamet’s reputation as a great American dramatist.... Mamet has become a polarizing figure in recent decades — his later plays have not been well-received, and his rightward political turn has alienated some onetime fans. But his early plays remain admired....

Theater people wring their hands and humbly request permission to stage Mamet plays. What if they stick to his early plays, written in the days before his rightward political turn?

“Fuck that artist. It’s never about the art or the quality of the art. It’s always about the revolution!”

There is this German drug store chain founder/owner that cancelled a huge Tesla delivery car order because of Elon’s politics. It’s like they din’t care about the environment at all…

Admitting bigotry is not a good look, but Democrats seem comfortable with it.

Bill Burr doesn’t exactly tow the leftie line either. Walks it like a tight rope yeah, but still…

Mamet has become a polarizing figure

Just who is doing the polarizing here? The artist, who is freely exploring ideas, or the critics and patrons who demand fealty to a particular ideology?

Peachy ayon kay ...

You are only "polarizing" if you walk away from the leftwing group-think plantation.

Celebrities have become so well off the only challenge left is EGOTing.

thanks for reminding me I have a crush on Bob Odenkirk. Plus - his character and acting in Breaking Bad - phenomenal.

"his rightward political turn has alienated some onetime fans"

That's fine with me. I, along with several of my friends, have not watched a second of the NBA since they threw in with Black Lives Matter.

LOL, I read the caption and thought the last name was Bill Barr not Burr and thought, huh? the former attorney general is going to be in a play?

I just read the Wikipedia entry on Mamet and it includes the sentence "David is a reform Jew and strongly pro-Israel." I guess that's de rigueur now , especially if one is a Jew. Maybe we all need to start doing that now along with our preferred pronouns, indicate whether we are pro or anti-Israel.

I am glad I read that entry because it states Mamet published a collection of essays, "Writing in Restaurants". I am going to find that to read. Wiki also reports that Mamet has written a screenplay based on Hunter Biden, called "The Prince". I guess we'll see if that actually gets made. And will anyone care anymore? The whole Biden family seems like a distant memory but he is still the President.

An all-women version of Glen Garry Glen Ross would be a great idea. The vast majority of real estate agents are women, and they can be just as cutthroat as men, if not more so.

Dave Begley ayon kay ...

I told the Omaha Public Power District Board to watch Mamet’s con man/heist movies so they could learn how they’ve been duped.

I think the truly talented actors always want to do theatre, it's the way they prove they are the best, anyone can do TV or movies.

Back in the thirties, George Bernard Shaw took a trip to the USSR. He was very admiring of socialism's achievements in that country. He was given an interview with Stalin. He was respectful of that leader's wisdom and insight. This doesn't look good for GBS but, on the bright side, if he haver had traveled to Germany and looked with equal awe on Nazism and Hitler, his plays would no longer be produced.

I believe that I've posted this before, but one can never read it too often.... From 2008, Mamet's own explanation of his political conversion.

Yah, but this is an en masse bull rush of A and B listers to Broadway, not Gwyneth doing summer theatre in Williamstown.

"Mamet has become a polarizing figure in recent decades — his later plays have not been well-received...". Saying the unsayable. Using more words than necessary.

Another way of saying it: Mamet outed himself as a conservative. We no longer like him. End of article.

By the way, I'm not sure the new cast will do this better than the all-star original cast, but they are all good and so, I can see it being worth watching.

Iman at 846 - Thank you. It was Frank Rich. Glad to see part of memory was correct. Cheers.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...
You are only "polarizing" if you walk away from the leftwing group-think plantation.

As an example of how this bias works, I once attended an FBI briefing where threats to Krystan Sinema were attributed to her being a "polarizing figure," not because she was a moderate in an increasingly extremist Democrat party.

Exactly.

imTay ayon kay ...

Re "polarizing figure, here is rule 13 from Rules for Radicals:

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions."

So "polarizing figure" means figure to be polarized.

It's like you hardcore Trunp fans don't realize that your out and proud whining complaining insecurities are unmanly un-American and definitely unattractive to the weaker sex. Obviously all of these unwoke and anti-woke entertainment professionals are being canceled so hard that they are making s*** tons of money off of Netflix and have gotten so wealthy that they can now afford to take a huge pay cut for a prestigious job on Broadway.

You guys could form a new boy band and call it tears for fears

So, his Lefty plays are tuites suite but the righty plays are terrible?

Lazarus ayon kay ...

They should have kept Alec Baldwin in the cast and had the prop department plant a few guns on the set.

Lazarus ayon kay ...

Shaw did say in 1935, “The Nazi movement is in many respects one which has my warmest sympathy.”

True, Shaw criticized Hitler and had hardly anything, or nothing, bad to say about Stalin, but his generation (he was born in 1856) didn't necessarily see Communism and fascism as diametrically opposed.

I saw the Irish Abbey theater players perform waiting for Godot at the Cooper Union in Manhattan a few years ago or more. It was absolutely hilarious. Did you know that Beckett wrote in his will that women were never to perform the lead roles. I know this because a documentarian friend of mine took me to work with his crew to Croatia some 20 or 25 years ago to perform waiting for Godot in a cast led by Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave, Amanda Plummer, and another Britt actress Whose name escapes me now. TheBeckett estate refused to give permission for the performance. So we filmed rehearsals. At any rate, it seems the project was a little too complex to render a finalized product. It was, however, a great experience.
