I need to decide if I care that Kamala Harris's husband cheated on his first wife.

I'm going to read the NYT article on the topic, live blog my reading, and come to a conclusion.

The article is "Doug Emhoff, Husband of Kamala Harris, Acknowledges Long-Ago Affair/The relationship with a teacher at his children’s elementary school occurred when he was married to his first wife, years before he met Ms. Harris."

A couple thoughts prior to reading the text:

1. Emhoff is the spouse of the candidate, and the opposing candidate — we've long known — cheated on his first wife. He also seems to have done some other cheating, perhaps a lot — more than I even want to waste my time to figure out.

2. Is the spouse of the President — the First Lady/Gentleman — supposed to be a symbol of purity? Does the old-fashioned demand for higher purity in women transfer to a man when he's in the classic "First Lady" position? I got distracted wondering who was the sluttiest First Lady, then annoyed by the answer the internet fed me: Melania Trump. Stupid internet mixes up sexual activity and posing nude.

Now, let's read:
Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, said on Saturday that he had an extramarital affair during his first marriage, years before he met Ms. Harris....

That last phrase is key. What he did has nothing to do with her and very little to do with the man he is now.

... with a teacher who worked at the elementary school his children attended in Culver City, Calif., approximately 15 years ago. At the time, Mr. Emhoff, an entertainment lawyer, was married to Kerstin Emhoff, a film producer, with whom he had two children....

First, one must think of the children. It's sad that they lost the mother-with-father home, but we don't know the details of the atmosphere within that home. Maybe it was a wreck in the intact form. We can't know. Second, there's something about a man switching from his high-powered-career wife — if that's what she was — and attaching to a woman in a more traditional, more feminine role — here, a woman who worked with young children.

“During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions,” Mr. Emhoff said in the statement. “I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.”...

Well, good. I'm glad he didn't try to say what I was willing to imagine, that the marriage was already irreparably broken. He took the whole blame onto himself and, if what he says is true, worked to make amends. I hope that worked out for the 2 children by his marriage to Kerstin. I just checked his Wikipedia page, and it only lists 2 children. What happened to the other child? Did he "work through" his fatherhood with that child? Wait. I'm relying on extraneous information. This article hasn't yet mentioned that the other woman became pregnant.

In the years since their divorce, Mr. Emhoff and his ex-wife have frequently referred to each other as friends, and they have said they have worked to raise their children with Ms. Harris, whom they call a “co-parent.”...

It's good of Harris to handle this well... at least well enough to be able to present a happy enough face to the public. It's not easy to be a step-parent.

“Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago,” Ms. Emhoff said [on Saturday]. “He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala and I have built together.”...

That's a very packaged statement, but it does show she's at least willing to help the campaign. She's not the most bitter ex-wife in the world, but she might be acting entirely out of hope and ambition for her children. I can't know. And I don't much care.

Okay. I've read it all. There was nothing about the impregnation. I must have seen that elsewhere. I said I was only going to read this article, but I've got to do this one shred of outside research. I'd seen headlines like this, in the NY Post: "Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff admits to cheating on first wife after bombshell report he impregnated nanny." I guess the NYT did not find that "fit to print." The NY Post says:

[The other woman], who taught at a private school attended by their two kids.... did not keep the baby, a close friend with direct knowledge of the affair and pregnancy told The Daily Mail. It’s unclear what, exactly, the friend meant....

Yeah, [the other woman] is entitled to her privacy. There are at least 3 ways that she might have failed to "keep the baby," and it's an inappropriate imposition on her to try to find out. Or do you want to know if Emhoff pressured her into getting an abortion? You're not going to find out, and I'm only going so far as to print that question because I'm sure it will be raised in the comments. I took out the woman's name.

My conclusion: None of this impinges on the question whether Kamala Harris should be elected President.

What happened to "Morals of an Alley Cat"? Is Kamala going to apologize for her predecessor casting aspersions on marital matters of opposing candidates?

Yeah, I really can't be bothered with this and don't understand what makes it a "bombshell." I'm also over Harris's affair with Willie Brown except insofar as, having achieved a political position only through her romantic attachment to a powerful man (just like Hillary Clinton), which I do consider to be an affront to feminism, what did she do with it?

Yes, Harris is bad enough a candidate on her own that she doesn’t need to be burdened by Doug’s impregnating the nanny.

Before the story broke Kerstin Emhoff, the ex-wife, posted on X/ Twitter about Usha Vance, predicting she will soon be an ex-wife, too. I think that curiosity about a candidate’s family is normal and the spouse banging the babysitter during his first marriage is newsworthy when he acts as a surrogate for the candidate which he’s been doing.

I get that the marriage may have been bad, but cheating with the person taking care of your kids is such a double betrayal. I get that it was long before he met Harris, but she still chose to marry this guy. I get that it doesn't affect policy positions, but it's hard to look at someone the same way after learning something gross about them. And I certainly think this should end any personal attacks on Trump.

The woman Doug Emhoff chose to have the affair with was not only a teacher at his children’s school but also worked as his daughter’s nanny at the time she became pregnant. That woman lost her job at the school, her nanny side job, and her pregnancy.
Dougie worked through his issues and his family came out stronger in the end. Amazing Emhoff’s statement does not mention the pregnancy. But then the NYTimes does not either.

Why care about the morals of the spouse or family history of the present Democratic Party Candidate for President?

After Joe and Jill Biden, and Joe's son Hunter? After the Clintons, where Hillary ran the Bimbo Eruption Squad and actively destroyed the lives of multiple women with whom her husband cheated? After the Kennedy family history with women? I think 70 years of immoral behavior by Democrats is precedent enough to say, "No, this matters not a single bit."

Either Althouse is being purposefully obtuse or she is being purposefully obdurate. No, Althouse, at this point there is no rational excuse for invalidating a Democrat for where they or their spouses or family members stick their dicks. Too little asking, and way too late.

She's a tease like a social disease
But she's still so close to my reach
If I call, if I call at all
Any time at all [Repeat x 4]
So the story goes
I think I'll take her for a ride
With this moneybag by my side
A gigolo is the only way to go
And so I show my face
And I can even fake a smile
But I'm laughing inside all the while
This little girl
She's a joke [Repeat x 3]
Any time at all [Repeat x 4]
He's a whore, (I'd do anything for money)
He's a whore, (Look at the things that I write)
He's a whore, (Ooo, the stories I can tell)
He's a whore (In the morning, in the night)
I'm a whore (He'll do anything for money)
I'm a whore (Look at the clothes that he wears)
I'm a whore (He'll do anything for money
I'm a whore
And so the story goes
I think I'll take her for a ride
With this moneybag by my side
A gigolo is the only way to go.

By itself, the Emhoff thing is no big deal, but there are several factors at work.
1) Harris, Emhoff and Trump have substantial marital faillures. The “alley cat” line of attack on Trump is neutralized.
2) Harris’ avoidance of the media on anything policy related leaves a vacuum in the media cycle. It is going to get filled with something. The Emhoff imbroglio has filled it and the growing conversation initiated by Trump that Harris isn’t a foundational Black American has also filled the vacuum.

Never feel sorry for a political candidate with a complicit press corps that can’t, through its own incompetence, control the political narrative

Jamie said...

I saw it speculated on X that Emhoff might have forced the other woman to have an abortion, which I guess would be relevant, in a sideways fashion, to the campaign: how many of the (college-educated, affluent) women who will die, metaphorically, on the hill of unfettered abortion ask themselves how many of our million abortions a year are coerced?

In my world, I also ask how many of those million abortions a year could possibly result from rape (or incest, such a strange addition to the Catalog of Undeniably Necessary Abortions, since it would be rape unless we're talking consensual brother-sister incest) or contraception failure... versus just using abortion as birth control the way women in the USSR used to.

Bad deeds by a spouse doesn't matter, so long as it's a Democrat. On the other hand, the Democrats (and its media) went all in during the 2000 presidential campaign, when they sprung the "October surprise" that in 1963 -- when the future first lady was 17 -- Laura Bush ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle. The driver of that other car, a 17-year-old named Michael Douglas, was killed. And the speculation that Melina Trump was an illegal alien was the rage by the MSM during the 2016 campaign. For example, "Gaps in Melania Trump’s immigration story raise questions" in Politico.

Harris' marriage to Emhoff seems to be political cover, a big firm white Jewish attorney marries a Jamaican-Irish-India Hindu woman who never married in her many years as arm-candy young woman to prominent Californian men who rewarded her with well-paid "do-little" corporate board and political patronage appointments. Senators require a spouse; VP and Pres candidates require a spouse. Emhoff is a presentable middle-aged professional man, fulfilling the spouse role.

That Emhoff cheating on his wife via his daughter's nanny and school-teacher, that's less excusable bad behavior for many college-educated wives than "just an affair", worse yet is "pregnant nanny" scenario. Puts him in "despicable" category of cheating husbands, and he probably had a hard time finding a serious relationship post-divorce until Harris arrived urgently needing a husband for political career purposes.

No wonder they're both adamantly pro-choice till date-of-birth.

"Ann, he had sex and impregnated the NANNY!!! I thought sexual harassment was about the imbalance in the power dynamic."

It would make a big difference if the impregnated woman was working directly for the family inside their house, both because of sexual harassment within an employment setting but also because it's lowly to have sex with someone (just) because they are close at hand (unless they are close at hand because you married them).

The NYT article did not contain this information. Is it true that this nanny/employer relationship existed? It is right there in the NY Post headline, so the word "nanny" is in my post. I didn't really process that part of the story, because I wanted to restrict myself to the NYT article, but then I didn't... because I wanted to know where's that baby now and is DE still in a father role toward that person? Is KH a stepmother to that person? Why not?

The relevance is in regard to Trump. The fact that Kamala accepted Emhoff as her husband despite his having impregnated his child's caretaker ostensibly shows that, in her mind, men can overcome these kinds of failings and still be perfectly good human beings. Doesn't that kind of neutralize the argument that Trump's past infidelities demonstrate that he's morally unfit to serve as president?

Of course, some would argue that it's not apples to apples because Emhoff, unlike Trump, isn't running for president -- but that largely ignores the extent to which, these days, presidential candidates and their spouses tend to be marketed as a package. (Ironically (?), Donald and Melania stand as sort of an exception to this rule.)

Of course, another interpretation of the revelation about Emhoff is that Kamala's marriage to him, like her "affair" with Willie Brown, was just something she did to advance her career. IOW, forget the morality of what he did, isn't this another manifestation of her essential phoniness?

Really don’t care much about this personally. Kamala can live with whoever she wants, whatever. But I agree one set of rules would be nice. And I also agree nature abhors a vacuum, so without any new conferences/questioning of Kamala, this stuff is inevitable (if Kamala doesn’t want to see it she knows how to end it).

The NDA angle is pretty schadenfreude-full though. Normally I wouldn’t care about NDAs either, and didn’t and still don’t give a shit about Trump’s NDA or the BS lawfare trial over it.

And I’ll admit to having a mild curiousity about the possible abortion angle (or pressure to abort). Not because any lefties will care ( they, including Kamala, seem to be ok with abortion any time anywhere for any reason), but because of the power imbalance/feminism hypocrisy at play. Rich guy stoops the nanny, knocks her up, pressures her to have an abortion and pays her off (with an NDA of course) to “go away” so he can return to hi “happy family”. Never seen that before huh?

I will quibble with one thing Michael K said though. If the nanny/side-piece/baby momma now lives in the Hamptons I’m not sure it implies the settlement/child support was substantial. It might indicate that, of course. But I suspect it’s as likely or more likely that she just had a pattern of getting close to (on the radar screens of) and garnering the attention of rich and powerful men. It’s a type. Maybe she finally landed one…

Curious as to how nanny managed to become pregnant. Was she not on birth control, and did he not use a condom? That would indicate an impromptu sort of event. And, was the affair an ongoing situation or a one time wham-bam-thank -you-mam? Did the nanny think her boss would leave his wife for her, as did Monica?
Trumps alleged sex with Stormy is said to have happened one time, but is always referred to as an affair.

Sometimes an affair is less sex related, and more ego related. Easy to imagine years married man or woman feeling taken for granted and being flattered by attention and/or admiration from another.

At least she didn’t marry Trump who has 5 children from three different women. And he’s White!

Hey, here's an idea, let's compare each of the candidates children and step-children. See which parents had the best influence on off-spring.

Infidelity should be judged in different degrees. Cheating with the nanny is a first class offense. That's up there with cheating with your wife's younger sister. Cheating with a porn star is in most states regarded as a misdemeanor offense....In the annals of infidelity, I think FDR deserves special mention. He suborned his daughter to arrange his affair. The sainted Eleanor felt betrayed not just by her husband but also by her daughter. That's aggravated infidelity....I'd give this much credit to JFK, Bill Clinton, and Trump. They were horn dogs, but their goals were straight forward and not complicated by any aggravating factors. They didn't want to hurt their wives. They just wanted sex. These were, for the most part, misdemeanor infidelities.....There was something calculating about Kamala's affairs. She was more in pursuit of her career than of pleasure. She was unfaithful to her libido. She could have done the dirty with younger, studlier men than Brown. There was thus something premeditated and disreputable about her offense. I'd judge her offense more harshly than that of Trump.

Yes, lets not get into what kind of person Emhoff is. Who cares if he impregnated the nanny and pressured her to get rid of the baby. Lets let everyone keep their privacy. Who cares if he will be the "First Gentleman" and presumably is talking to "Kam" about public policy every night. Moveon.org

But for some reason Trump doesn't deserve privacy. His sex life and relationship with Melania is fair game for public scrutiny and non-stop mockery and lawfare, but lets not put that same microscope on a Democrat! Who cares about their sex life. its none of our business. LOL

Will Republicans pounce? Mabye. Democrats don't have to pounce because the MSM pounces for them. WHats so puzzling about American voters is this: The democrats don't care what their pols do. Corruption, sex crimes, scandals, they don't give a fuck. They just vote (D) no matter what. The Republicans are becoming the same way, because they aren't gullible rubes. Why uphold standards when the D's wont.

But then there's some mysterious bloc out of Independent voters out there who do care. Or maybe they dont exist. If they do exist, are they only upset at Republican scandals and sketchy sex lives but OK with the Democrats doing the same thing? I dunno.

Harris’ relationship with Willie Brown happened after he had already been separated from his wife for over ten years. Doesn’t there need to be a current wife for Harris to be the mistress?

As a result of this story being revealed I discovered that Doug Emhoff’s first wife, Kersten, isn’t Jewish either. So their children are not Jewish, along with not being raised Jewish. Being Jewish was never important to him.
So I’m somewhat confused about why so much effort was made to tell the public that he is Jewish. Was that all some kind of a preemptive cover for him because Jewish men are allegedly more moral? Or a distraction for Kamala being Anti- Israel?
Because nobody really cares about his infidelity.

Why did Obama leak this story?

I'm reading that this has been well known in certain circles for awhile now but because Kamala is a Democrat and this happened before she (supposedly) knew him, it was ignored. Now she's going to be the Presidential candidate and he's been featured as a spokesman on various issues, toxic masculinity, abortion rights, etc., The Democrats figured it would get out and better now, before the convention, then closer to election day.

Of course we only have Emhoff's side of the story, totally voluntary "affair", caused pain in his family, no expression of sympathy for the woman herself. We probably won't hear from her if there's an NDA.

Michael K said...

Well, she sure wasn't a wife. Willie, the most skilled politician in CA, appointed her to a number of token jobs and supported her for DA. After that she showed little loyalty.

Expect it was an affair, and there was an "accident".
From the Daily Mail, she didn't keep the child, but there were videos of a mystery child, which would have been the right age, so maybe put her up for adoption. If true, good.

"Brown addressed accusations of favoritism in the San Francisco Chronicle on Jan. 26, 2019:

Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago. Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker.

And I certainly helped with her first race for district attorney in San Francisco. I have also helped the careers of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and a host of other politicians."

And "Biden-Harris try to put Trump in jail for something Harris also did" plays well with the story about how she was smoking pot while putting Californians in jail for possession.

"Morals of an alley cat" only applies when we are discussing an (R). For those with a (D) it was a "mistake", "in the past", and "has no effect on current issues".

Joe Biden had an affair with Jill when she was still married. That's quite okay.
Kamala Harris slept her way to political positions with married man Willie Brown. Also okay. Kamala Harris' husband had an affair with the babysitter. No problem at all. It was long ago and during his first marriage.

A stripper said she had a one night stand over a decade ago with former President Trump. He denied it and she did as well until it became profitable for her to publicize the accusation. The horror! How dare he! Trump has the morals of an alley cat. Disqualifying in a President. We must publish the accusation daily and have her give all the intimate details in a trial that has nothing to do with the actual act.

No matter how much you hate the left and their loyal media, I assure you it is not enough.

They call her "Momala"? Really?

The youngest, the daughter, was 14 when Kamala married her father. The brother is only dated as being in college at the time. The divorce happened when the daughter was 9 but no info on how long Kamala was dating her father.

Since it's all about the "vibes" these days, I get the vibe that the step-kids were paid off to go along with the marketing. No skin off their backs adults.

This is such a strange comment, I'll have to comment on the comments for once.

Who thinks "jewish men are more moral"? Mormons? Christian Zionists? Harvey Weinstein? The Rabbi who owns Pornhub? The Jewish organizations who are claiming "Abortion is a Sacred Jewish value"? Bernie Madoff? The Jews who run Hollywood?

As for Israel, Kamala is just like Biden. She'll give Israel whatever they ask for. And stand by them, no matter what they do.

Some people were relieved or disappointed that they didn't have to go on wondering, or pretending, or hoping or saying that Doug is gay and just Kamala's beard. Tim Scott is perhaps a little envious that he didn't come up with such a stunt to shut up the slanderers himself.

"Power imbalance" is indeed at the heart of this. Kirsten Emhoff was more career-driven and, in some ways, more successful than Doug, so he naturally turned to somebody who would look up to him and even admire him. It's the same old story.

Harris did have a relationship with Willie Brown who was separated from his wife, and he did appoint her to lucrative government positions, but the idea that she was sleeping her way to the top through multiple liaisons hasn't been proven or even supported by any evidence.

I might say that Doug Emhoff's conduct and Kamala's conduct don't matter, but Biden made so much about the "morals of an alley cat" that this just adds to my disgust with the Democrats. It would have been better if they didn't pounce on Trump's moral flaws, considering their own.

Democrats eat this shit up. The fact that the emotional development of most of them stalled out when they were four years old (their intellectual development didn't hang on much longer) probably has something to do with that.

It takes a special kind of rich scumbag to act on temptation by banging the nanny who's taking care of your kids, and even worse, getting her preggers. Not only a loss of self-control, but workplace sexual abuse as the paymaster. Now: I'm not voting for the other sexual predator in the family anyway, but this is just more good, provable reason to find them both contemptible. It does go some ways toward explaining the daughter/stepdaughter, who to all appearances, looks like a miserable, unhappy, acting-out type, of the kind tending toward Antifa-like extra-curricular activities.

Laura Bush's high school driving skills,
Sarah Palin: is Trig her son or her grandson?
Ann Romney's horses,
Mike Pence having boundaries of chastity,
The code of conduct at a school where Mike Pence's wife taught art part-time,
An hate crime hoax not involving Karen Pence,
and so forth...

So if those are the rules, I'm perfectly fine with digging into the man who had sex with an employee and the A.G. who subsequently thought, "No red flags here; he's the husband for me!"

Maybe it would matter less if we'd go back to the days when the First Lady wasn't treated like some kind of co-president.

I'm also kind of interested to know how an elementary school teacher ended up being able to afford a house in The Hamptons. If Dougie helped pay for it, someone should alert Alvin Bragg.

Along with Inga saying this it is curious that every other article I've read also uses the term separated. Not divorced. Which means still married and the two were committing adultery. I know people who've been prosecuted for that. But the military holds it's personnel to higher standards then demoncRAT politicians practice.

I don't think it helps Trump or his campaign to dwell on this. It will just cause some voters to be reminded of Trump's sexual problems. Like the "grab them by the pussy" comment, being found guilty by a jury of sex abuse, cheating on his wives, having sex with a porn star. It would be much wiser to focus on substantive issues where Harris is vulnerable. This story about Emhoff is just a distraction.
