"Three years ago... JD Vance... suggested in a TV interview that some Democrats including Vice President Harris are 'a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable.'"

"Those 2021 comments are resurfacing on social media now.... [M]any... are embracing and owning the 'childless cat lady' label as a point of pride.... 'There’s a movement,” declared Nikki Barnes, a previous member of the Democratic National Committee from Florida, accompanied by a 'Childless cat ladies for Harris 2024' image quickly amassing nearly 2 million views. On TikTok, people are snapping up 'Cat ladies for Harris 2024' stickers."

From "‘Childless cat ladies,’ Jennifer Aniston, and Swifties take on JD Vance/Celebrities including Jennifer Aniston and Whoopi Goldberg cite many reasons women don’t have kids. Others are embracing being a childless cat lady like Taylor Swift" (WaPo).

It's clever to take an insult and turn it around like that. I'm trying to think of other examples of that. There's "nasty woman." And "suffragette."

Another reaction to Vance's "childless cat ladies" is that not everyone who is childless is childless by choice:
“I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States,” actress Jennifer Aniston wrote Wednesday.... “Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day.... I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too.”

JD Vance could turn it around by pointing out that Jennifer Aniston is unhappy because of her decisions, not his decisions.

This is vastly amusing, though. When you lose the motherhood competition to Hillary Clinton, you're in for a bad time as a candidate. Momala is going down.

The childless part is the straw man. The insult is cat lady. It implies a level of social dysfunction that leaves a woman alone. It implies you have little to offer men or whatever you’re into…

When you put them together in Venn style, the size of the mutual overlap needs to be determined.

It may be a pretty decent size...

There are two groups of childless women and I think we need to be better about differentiating between them.

The women that tried are largely on our side.

The women who hate children, avoid having them and kill them in the womb are actually anti-human and responsible for much of the pathology in our society.

He's not wrong, and the childless cat ladies who would take offense were never going to vote for Trump anyway.

Moments afterward, in a segment that is always cut from media replays of this interview, he was careful to distinguish between those who are voluntarily childless and those who wanted to have children but could not.

It is a serious mistake for the survival of civilization when we make government policy in a manner that favors or subsidizes anything but intact two-parent families. But those families tend not to vote for radical Democrats. That is the message that needs to be driven home.

In general, people with children look at the world differently than people without children. If you are in a job that gives you control over the future to the extent that being President does, this difference matters. Why is this controversial? On the other hand, deciding that tens of billions of dollars in student loans does not need to be paid by the borrowers will affect them.

“The fact that he voted against the Right to IVF Act is very telling and very worrisome. JDV has a point, of course, and prog MSM will misconstrue it, of course, but it is still important for him and DJT to pivot more clearly toward the moderate middle. Since Trump + pick have the trust of the deplorable base, they can do it safely. Of course many JDV quotes are pre-VP, but scoring points in the culture war is different than trying to broaden the base to win.

The Vault Dweller বলেছেন...

Well this looks like it is from long ago. Hopefully Vance is smart enough not to rehash this point. It is a political loser. Especially because he is a man making that point. That being said, I think his point has some merit. And while Jennifer Aniston is right to say that not everyone who is childless chose to be childless, if a person focuses solely on their career at a young age, and isn't earnest about getting married and having children until he or she is in their mid to late 30's or even in their 40's they have effectively chosen to be childless. They gambled that they could start that important life step late and it would all still work out, which it can sometimes, but it is a very risky choice. And it is a risky choice that everyone knows or ought to know is risky.

But insulting lefty women as "Cat Ladies," is a bad move politically. In general a politician going after their opponent's voters instead of their opponent is a bad idea. Hillary's "Basket of Deplorables" comment was politically very costly for her, no matter how much she, her aides, or her voters mnight have snickered at the joke.

Also in the article Inga was too stupid to read:

"GOP senators Wednesday tried to bring up their own alternative IVF bill from Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Katie Britt (R-Ala.)."

The Republican IVF bill specifically protected IVF.

The Democrat "bill" was actually 4 bills that also included subsidies, insurance requirements, and "other reproductive procedures" code for abortion.

"The Right to IVF Act, sponsored by Democratic Sens. They would even stop jailing them.

You would have major MSM campaigns round the clock on all the major networks pressuring people to not "serial killer shame". You'd have articles in the Atlantic by breakfast time with op-eds telling the personal adversity-to-triumph story of Wendy, the Wine-O-Clock Strangler.

This hyper-feminized society would go into overdrive to further ensure that women, even serial killers, are not made to feel bad..."No woman must ever be allowed to feel bad". There's a phenomenon called "political lesbianism". If you haven't heard of it that's a situation where heterosexual women become so filled with feminist zeal and political hatred of men that they actually become lesbians despite not actually being attracted to women. There "lesbianism" becomes a political act, not a sexual or romantic one.

This is very similar to that, except replace "lesbian" with "cat lady" or "pussyhatter" and it's the same thing...commiseration within the coven to pwn the boys. It's immature. It's childish.

It is profoundly insecure.

YoungHegelian বলেছেন...

The back and forth between Vance and the Democratic ladies masks a deeper demographic truth, a truth revealed by the old political joke, "How do you make a woman a Republican?" "Marry her."

Both parties need to understand the demographic truth --- why do the politics of women track so closely with their marital status? This isn't true for men, by the way. And the more children a woman has, the more conservative she'll be.

What's cause and what's effect here? God only knows, 'cause I sure as hell don't. But it needs to be discussed, even if feelings are ruffled along the way.

Breezy বলেছেন...

First, also in that link about the IVF bill:

“Following the vote, every Senate Republican signed a pledge saying they “strongly support” continued nationwide access to IVF, which surged to the forefront of election year politics when the Alabama Supreme Court in February ruled that embryos are children and thus protected when it comes to the state’s wrongful death statute.“

Second, another supposed insult which was turned around and used as a badge of honor, I think, was the “and yet she persists” comment by McConnell about Warren.

Inga বলেছেন...

“The right isn't putting them up as presidential candidates.”

So, are you suggesting that a presidential candidate who have no children should not be president?

“Five presidents (Washington, Madison, Jackson, Polk, Buchanan) did not have any biological children.”

They also tend to sport lace-collar symbols in honor of the shriveled, prunish, and thankfully dead enemy of the US, "Notorious RGB".

YoungHegelian বলেছেন...

@Inga,

Oh really? I have had 4 babies.

And I know a lefty Jewish feminist who had five, but you and her are statistical anomalies among the Mormons, Orthodox Jews, conservative Catholics, Evangelicals, Muslims, etc who are the majority producers of multi-child families.

Lee Moore বলেছেন...

As The Vault Dweller points out, when a woman decides to embark upon the babymaking quest, as opposed to other things, can have a significant effect on her chances of finishing up childless.

Only about 3% of woemen are infertile in their early 20s. Roughly 8% are infertile at 30. So about one woman in twenty loses her chance if she doesn't get to it in her 20s. By 35 another woman in 20 misses the boat, and by 40 one woman in three is infertile. After that it's pretty much a full collapse. With rapidly increasing miscarriage rates on top.

The good news is that a clear majority of women can still have children in the second half of their 30s. But the bad news is that a sizeable minority cannot. And most of them cannot becasue they have missed the boat by delaying things. As noted above, only 3% are infertile in their college years.

So when did the unfortunate Jennifer Aniston start trying to have a baby ? That's her business, of course, but if she didn't start trying till she was past 35, then she was taking a gamble, which she lost. That's very sad. But if it's true then what she should be using her privileged position on a soapbox to do is to tell young women - if you want children, get going in your 20s. The earlier the better.

Senate Republicans block legislation to codify IVF access (The Hill)

"Legislation to establish a national right to in vitro fertilization (IVF) was blocked by Senate Republicans on Thursday, amid a push by Democrats to put the GOP on defense over reproductive rights ahead of the November elections.

The Right to IVF Act, sponsored by Democratic Sens. Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), Patty Murray (Wash.) and Cory Booker (N.J.), is a package of four bills that would both establish a nationwide right to IVF and other assisted reproductive technology, as well as lower the costs of IVF treatment to make it more accessible.

The vote Thursday is the latest in a series set up by Senate Democratic leadership about codifying reproductive rights.

Democrats want to drive a wedge between Republicans and put them on the record opposing those efforts, especially as the GOP struggles with how to message its stance on reproductive rights in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Creating a nationwide right to IVF means this:

"The bill seeks to make IVF treatment more affordable by mandating coverage for fertility treatments under employer-sponsored insurance and certain public insurance plans. It would also expand coverage of fertility treatments, including IVF, under US military service members and veterans’ health care." (CNN)

When Barack Obama said:

"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
How was it different from J.D. Vance saying these things?

“a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

“Look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC—the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children.”

I think they're basically the same: They are appealing to their base. Obama knew he was never going to get the bitter clinger vote, just as Vance knows he isn't getting the single cat lady vote. Lot's of people acting all hurt over this, but let's face it, you were never going to vote for him, no matter what he said.

Added: Let's assume these quotes weren't mistakes in an unguarded moment, because then they mean nothing: Everybody says stupid things from time to time. Which of these could be more likely to appeal to swing voters? I think Vance's win by a lot, here's why. Married women with kids are the quintessential swing vote. They're slightly Republican, but only slightly. Their votes can be won or lost and they're a huge demographic. On the other side, is there a big swing demographic of people who are anti-religion and anti-gun? I don't think so. I think they're massively Democratic voters and not really winnable or losable.

Added: Two other major differences: Obama was the candidate for president and Vance is vying for VP. Obama made his comments on the campaign trail and Vance made his comments three years before being chosen as Trump's VP.

Here’s the reality.

The national debt is crushing. Soon Social Security and Medicare will be gone.

If you’re old and don’t have kids or close family who are younger and like you then you are going to die without help unless you are rich.

This is the history of humans.

Rachel will be fine unless her caretakers take all her money and leave her to die. Her Friends will not help her.

Brad dumped her to have kids. That’s life

"They seem to be the same old hens who are the first to cluck whenever a man is seen in the company of a woman they consider too young for him. "Love is love" according to their pious left wing dogma, unless it's a 35 year old man who loves a 23 year old woman (like my dad and mom.)"

There is a 13 year age difference between my wife and I, and when we met she matched the identity of a woman other women would "consider to young for me". Add to that equation my wife being a naturalized foreigner (Brazil) and I could tell you stories of times some women were visibly irked by the combo.

So much of this bellicosity is really just lots of women trying to control male sexuality, and more importantly who they choose to get with. They will never admit that but 90% of feminism is head games working to lower men's own sexual market value to make them politically and approachably safe for women that otherwise 'couldn't get him'.

I know many conservative women who did not or could not have children. Or lost them. Vance needs to cut that shit.

I know a lot of pro-choice mothers. One took a job in an abortion clinic. For one day. She sorted baby arms, legs, organs, and heads in trays to make sure all the parts were out.

She was driven insane.

I think, at minimum, every pro-choice voter and politician needs to spend a day doing this. Prove that you believe in it. Every one of you. Otherwise, also cut that shit.

Vance is opposed to a smallish fraction of the country, unmarried, childless women, ruling over the much larger fraction who get married and have kids. Not that they should be excluded from power, but that they shouldn't have outsized influence--which they do have in the Democratic party.

No, it's 100% correct. There are only two sexes, period. That you can arrive at the sex of, say, male with a karotype of XXY or XXXY or even XX is irrelevant to how many sexes there are. Sex is part of your phenotype. And there are only two of them in any species.

"It's clever to take an insult and turn it around like that." Actually, that's not exactly it.

This is not a particularly good example but traditional values and morality are not in the Democrat playbook. Here's a better example: "Look at me. I think it's okay to kill an unborn baby right up to the moment of birth!" Or, "Look at me. I abetted a Hamas jihadist in defacing statues and burning an American flag!

Depending on the generation these are badges of honor for Democrats.

As for Harris, she considers herself a mom. She really could have gone either way, having married a man who had children of 15 and 20, the year they wed and their natural mom was divorced, not deceased. She could have just referred to them as "my husband's kids", but she embraced "Momala". Sincere or not, it shows that Democrats are not entirely anti-natalist, even if the single childless women demographic is hugely Democrat.

"Vance needs to cut that shit."

Vance needed to rephrase that shit. He told the truth, but he did it wrong. He wasn't subtle. He wasn't tactful enough to damn them with faint praise. There's ways to dog whistle a backhand and create pecking orders within your target demographic without isolating the whole demographic. He's 39.

The target he was aiming at - the tanit-worshipping, commiserating and spiteful DNC catlady electorate - deserves to be insulted for how they're trying to control the lives of others, whether they have children or not. Their visible envy and spite out of all proportion to their demographic power should be reproved, by everyone.

It's clever to take an insult and turn it around like that. I'm trying to think of other examples of that. There's "nasty woman." And "suffragette."

The most frequently used example would have to be "fake news". So common in daily discourse that I suspect a lot of people forget where it came from.

Originally it was the media calling candidate Trump statements "fake news"

He turned it around so completely that at some famous annual dinner at the now defunct nauseum, Bob Woodward had to deny it.

"Mr president, the media are not fake news"

RideSpaceMountain : So much of this bellicosity is really just lots of women trying to control male sexuality, and more importantly who they choose to get with.

I don't think that's quite right. The bellicosity is based on resentment that in the opinion of such women, society is structured unfairly between the sexes. Which to some extent it is. But the guilty party is not the patriarchy, but Mother Nature.

Who has arranged that it is difficult for a woman to pursue a career on a timescale consistent with also pursuing a family. Men do not face this problem. The consequences of a woman putting career first up to say age 30, and only then embarking on the hunt for a suitable mate, and children are not limited to shrivelling eggs and galloping infertility. The problem is also that evolution has baked in different drivers of sexual attraction in men and women. Men favor youth, health, good looks and absence of skankiness in a female mate. They don't care so much about status. Whereas women favor status in a male mate. And status means status equal to or higher than their own.

So you have a stack of able women with good careers, embarking on serious mate-hunting in their 30s. When they have achieved high status for themselves thereby cutting down the stock of equal or higher status men to mate with. And when they are five or ten years past the peak of their own attactiveness as a mate. So they find their pursuit of career has blinded them to the fact that they've screwed up their family options. To justify this to themselves, they conclude, or pretend to conclude, that the family thing doesn't matter.

Mother Nature doesn't play this trick on less able women. Most working women, like most working men, work because they need the money, not because they're pursuing a vocation. Thus they have no difficulty in finding mates they rate highly enough to marry, while they're still young.

So the catlady problem is concentrated among women with the ability to succeeed in business careers or academia, who have ignored all the warnings that unlike the men they are competing with in their careers, they are missing the family boat. Because Mother Nature has arranged it so. The bitch.

RideSpaceMountain বলেছেন...

@Lee Moore

"Many women will never forgive God for making them women." I can't remember who said that, but it is very true, and you're right about some aspects of their discontent being from forces beyond their control, but I disagree that it's all of it or even most of it.

In pathological psychology people with insecurities cope with their lack of control by attempting to control whatever they can even more, and if they're reasonably intelligent their ability to manipulate becomes the pathway for them to accomplish this. The reason for the coping mechanism might be environmental, but the actual coping is about controlling someone else, and many of these women are intimidated by men, their lack of the right kind of attention from the 'right kind' of man, and their inferiority to other women.

As George Carlin famously said, "if you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten", and these women use head games and sociopathy to demoralize other women about their possibilities and moralize to men about their choices.

I'll put it maybe a different way, 'they are trying to control everyone's sexuality, and who anybody but them gets to be with'. They are intimidated by the sexual potential of others, and it oozes from them like venom.

Gospace বলেছেন...

Ah, the demoncRAT compromise on display. You have to vote for this bill giving women a "Right to IVF" along with all kinds of other liberal crap or we're going to accuse you of opposing IVF!

There are other reasons besides age that factor into what women can and can't get pregnant naturally. Although age is a huge one. Had a neighbor in CA about the same age as my wife trying desperately hard to get pregnant. She also rigidly controlled her weight. Women without enough body fat don't get pregnant. She and hubby went on a month long vacation back home where no one fed her her restricted diet. She gained 10 pounds of unwanted weight- then got pregnant. My 29 year old daughter wasn't getting pregnant the old fashioned way. Neither she or my wife wanted to listen to my advice that she gain a few pounds and keep trying. She got pregnant with IVF assistance. Not to be critical but my 36 year old newlywed daughter-in-law doesn't have a low body fat problem. Grandchild #10 is on it's way.

And- how is IVF a matter of national concern? Does there really need to be a law enshrining it as a right? People already have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Any attempt to ban IVF would clearly be unconstitutional under the 10th amendment. Unlike abortion IVF does not in any way terminate a living human being.

Should IVF be subsidized by the government or be mandated in insurance coverage? No. My insurance does cover it. My daughters and husband's insurance covered only a tiny portion.

The right to pursue happiness doesn't include the right to be subsidized doing so.
